About the Author Dennis Skinner is the son of a miner sacked after the 1926 General Strike. Skinner, to the distress of his mother, and despite a Grammar School education, followed his dad down the pit. He was a Clay Cross and Derbyshire councillor before winning Bolsover for Labour in 1970, a seat he's held ever since. A former chairman of Labour, current member of the party's ruling National Executive Committee, Skinner's Parliamentary heckles and interventions are legendary. He was expelled so often from the Commons that suspension became an occupational hazard.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Great Book by a Great Man By M. Khoury What a fantastic book by a remarkable man. In an age of cynicism about politicians worldwide, Dennis stands out as a man of principle in a sea of back-biting lightweights too afraid to take a stand on issues that affect us most. His record as an MP is one of dedication to the working class and to the weakest members of society, all while living by the code that you say what you mean and mean what you say. His book, though, is much more than a tome on the values he represents. It is, how else to say it, a really good book, fun to read, informative, and fascinating. Sailing Close to the Wind is an excellent read that keeps your interest throughout, and you can hear Dennis's voice as he regales the reader with stories of Margaret Thatcher, life as a child during World War II, and other people and events throughout his years in the public eye and before. I recommend this book without reservation not only for readers in Great Britain, but also for those here in the US who are looking for a straight-forward, interesting book by this one-of-a-kind man who is a loyal friend to the most neglected members of society on both sides of the Atlantic. As an aside, if you want to have some fun, you must watch videos of Dennis during Prime Minister's Questions. There are too many classic moments to list.

By FictionFan Now in his eighties and still an active Labour Member of (the UK) Parliament, it seems to me as if Dennis Skinner has been around forever. Certainly he's been there since Parliament was televised, sitting in his usual seat beside the passage and making his famous quips at the opposition speakers...and sometimes those from his own party too. He claims that he didn't want to write this book of memoirs, but has finally given in to the requests of many people who have enjoyed his public speaking. Certainly the book's progress to publication seems to have been a difficult one - it has been delayed and delayed till it reached the stage that I wondered whether it would ever actually appear. At first, Skinner was shown as the sole author, then for a while the pre-order details said that it was to be co-written by Kevin Maguire, a left-wing journalist - but this finished version has reverted back to being credited to Skinner alone.All of which might help to explain why the book is, quite frankly, a bit messy. It's a cross between a rather patchy memoir and a statement of Skinner's political convictions, with occasional musings on other subjects, such as his love for London parks. That's not to say it's uninteresting - it is. Well, I'll narrow that down a little - it's interesting if you happen to be a left-wing UK political nerd who remembers the miners' strike and gets nostalgic over the thought of those halcyon days when we marched through the streets of wherever we happened to be at the time, shouting 'Maggie! Maggie! Maggie! Out! Out! Out!' Skinner is an unreconstructed socialist and proud of it. Following his father into the mines, he is of 'good working-class stock' (which was in fact the title the book was listed as at one stage of its production), and still sees himself very much as a class warrior. His hatred for the Conservatives is visceral and often expressed in terms not unlike a small boy calling nasty names. On the other hand, he is strangely unforthcoming about the changes in the Labour party over the decades - he surely must have hated and despised the New Labour 'project', but he keeps that pretty much under wraps, while making it clear he thinks it's well past time for Labour to get back to its roots.The thing is that politics has moved on so far from the seventies and eighties (whether for better or worse is for each person to decide for him/herself) and Skinner's views now come over as so out-dated, as does his manner of expressing them. (It may - or may not - have been acceptable to call a woman politician 'darling' in the seventies, but not so much today.) I would have agreed with him politically about 80% of the time in the Thatcher era, but those days, and the society that existed then, are gone, and won't be coming back. I felt at points as if I had accidentally stepped into a time-machine. Too much of the book is spent on him recounting his best insults - many of them were quite funny at the time (and many others were just childish), but I did start wondering if the tax-payers were paying for an MP or a comedian. However I felt that was more to do with the uneven structure of the book, than a real reflection on Skinner's career. He doesn't really say much about any of the committees he served on (I assume there were some) and the details he gives of the political highpoints of his career are too few and far between. He does go quite deeply into the miners' strike, obviously with a very strong bias towards the miners, and that was interesting. But the book is too heavily weighted to the Thatcher era - he glosses over the last Labour administration and then gets into his stride again with a series of childish personal insults about the current batch of Tories. (It always amuses me how both sides think the other side behaves badly - and it amused me how hoity-toity Skinner, the arch-insulter, got when Cameron hurled a couple in his direction. Wouldn't it be great to have a few adults in politics for a change?)Overall, I found this in parts interesting, in parts annoying, and as a whole, too unstructured to be completely satisfying. I can't imagine it appealing to many people outwith the Old Labour tradition, but for them I'm sure it will be an essential read, as it was for me. If for no other reason than that it gives us the chance to do the Time Warp again...

By Bruce Reginald Stanley Lee great book by a great man who stuck to his princibles and beleifs. a man who thought of the people not the money, a man who was honest through and through. he refused to react against the Tories for years when they baited him for going to Russia many times, yet when the right person Thatcher stood and accussed him of the same crime he asked her as the person who should know as she was the leader of Britain how did he get there as he has never had a passport, he waited years for that and really made it count. i was at Durham Miners Gala when Neil Kinnock leader of labour whenhe did a similar thing and he and the people let Kinnock know what they thought about him.Skinner was from the masses and never forgot them, a clever man and an honest man.Bruce Lee New Zealand.

About the Author

Gregory Ian Bain, PhD, MBBS, FRACS, FA(Ortho)A, is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopaedics & Trauma and Associate Professor in the Discipline of Anatomy and Pathology at the University of Adelaide, Australia. He is also Senior Visiting Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Adelaide Hospital and the Modbury Hospital, South Australia. Dr. Bain is a Fellow of the Australian Orthopaedic Association and a past president of the Shoulder and Elbow Society of Australia. He has undertaken much research work and in 2009 received the Australian Orthopaedic Association Research Award for outstanding orthopaedic research that has gained international recognition. Dr. Bain is Deputy Editor of the Journal of Wrist Surgery and a longstanding member of the editorial boards for Journal of Techniques of Hand and Upper Limb Surgery and the World Journal of Orthopaedics. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and is co-editor of the Springer book Elbow Arthroscopy (LA Pederzini, GI Bain, MR Safran eds. ISAKOS. Springer, 2013).

Hiroyuki Sugaya, MD, PhD, is Chairman and Director of the Shoulder and Elbow Center, Funabashi Orthopaedic Hospital, Funabashi, Chiba, Japan. Prior to taking up this position in April 2013, he was Director of the Shoulder and Elbow Service at Funabashi Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Center for more than 10 years. Dr. Sugaya is an Executive Board Member and Chair of the International Committee of the Japan Shoulder Society and is also a member of the ISAKOS Upper Extremity Committee. Dr. Sugaya’s principal clinical interests are the treatment of shoulder and elbow injuries, arthroscopic surgery for the shoulder and elbow, and shoulder arthroplasty. He is Assistant Editor of the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and an editorial board member for the Journal of Clinical Sports Medicine (Japanese) and the Japanese Journal of Orthopaedic Surgical Technique. He has authored 34 English-language articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Eiji Itoi, MD, PhD, is Professor and Chairman of Tohoku University School of Medicine, Sendai Japan, prior to which he was Professor and Chairman at Akita University School of Medicine. Dr. Etoi has served as President of the Japan Shoulder Society and in 2013 was President of the 12th International Congress of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery (ICSES). He is current Chair of the ISAKOS Upper Extremity Committee. Dr. Itoi has served on the editorial boards of various leading journals (including the American Journal of Sports Medicine and the Journal of Musculoskeletal Research) and is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and a Deputy Editor of the Journal of Orthopaedic Science. Dr. Itoi has won numerous awards and has frequently appeared in Who's Who in the World. He has been the recipient of many research grants and is the lead or co-author of more than 500 original articles and more than 80 review articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Giovanni Di Giacomo, MD, graduated from University of “La Sapienza”, Rome, in 1988 and obtained his specialty degree in Orthopaedics and Traumatology in 1993. Since 1996 he has been Chief of the Shoulder Arthroscopy Department at Concordia Hospital for Special Surgery, Rome. He has been a tournament doctor for the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) WTA since 1995 and a trainer in numerous workshops, seminars, and basic and advanced courses on shoulder arthroscopy. Dr. Di Giacomo is a member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Society of Arthroscopy (SIA), a member of the Upper Extremities Committee at ISAKOS, and an International Affiliate Member of American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). His research has been published in internationally recognized journals and he is the author of several books, including the Springer publications Shoulder Instability - Alternative Surgical Techniques (2011) and Atlas of Functional Shoulder Anatomy (2008). He is the inventor of the “Wedged Profile Plate” for the Latarjet procedure develop by Arthrex Inc.

We all tend to throw away our money (I know I find it easy to spend it on frivolous things). This book gives you ideas how to save money responsibly. There's some great tips on how to pinch a few pennies from our day-to-day lives. There's also lots of ideas on places to save our money (savings accounts, high-interest or high-yield savings accounts, CDs, etc.) The book guides you in setting a savings goal and how to manage your money wisely. I found the book interesting and very helpful. After reading it, I had lots of good ideas to help me start saving money and to also use what money I have more wisely.

By Richard Alan Bunch Review of Jack Brush’s Citizens of the Broken Compass: Ethical and Religious Disorientation in the Age of Technology This volume is an invitation, an invitation to thoughtfully consider some of the world wide issues that face us in our time. Here Professor Dr. Jack Brush, in a fair and balanced appraisal, considers topics for dialogue or even debate such as varieties of atheism (theoretical, practical, and religious), same-sex marriage, why Darwin is still a topic of debate and is it possible to be a scientist who is also justifiably religious, when does war become murder and what are the differences between a holy war, a just war, and an honorable war. Dr. Brush also distinguishes understandings between the scientific, the literary, and the historical when it comes to such topics as the Virgin birth. Is such a birth even possible? And how are we to understand it? Next, Brush deftly covers the differences between an abstract understanding of God (Einstein) and anthropomorphic understandings of God as in a religious text such as the Bible. He even takes into consideration Fritjof Capra’s Tao of Physics and how people need a scientific understanding of the world and a profound religious awareness to address current problems such as those in ecology. About the Author Charlotte Albina “Lottie” Aikens (1868-1949) born in Canada and a graduate of Ontario's Stratford Hospital, was a widely known nursing authority. An Army nurse in the Spanish-American War, Miss Aikens was an educator, supervisor of nurses, and director of Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC. She wrote several textbooks on nursing, nursing education and hospital administration and helped set up Detroit’s home nursing program. Lois Angelo, a clinical specialist in psychiatric-mental health nursing, has taught for over 25 years in BSN and ADN programs. In 2009, she received Sister Callista Roy's first theorist theme award. Lois is the care manager of the emergency department at Newton Wellesley Hospital in MA, and is a recent contributor to a variety of nursing textbooks.

It's amazing how many things are still just as they were so long ago!I recommend it. A quick read but also something to keep around as a handbook/guide.

About the Author

Mederic (“Med”) Daigneault is the senior director of private fund services at National Regulatory Services (NRS). He works closely with compliance officers to identify their firms’ regulatory obligations, conflicts of interest, and other risks in the development and implementation of comprehensive compliance programs.

He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Wesleyan University and earned his law degree at Boston College Law School. He practiced law as a corporate and securities lawyer before joining NRS in 2004.

Daigneault has assisted hundreds of investment advisers, including scores of private fund managers, in fulfilling their regulatory obligations. He is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and topical seminars sponsored by a wide variety of financial industry associations, vendors, and regulators. He has contributed to and has been sought for comment by leading industry publications regarding complex compliance issues. He lives in Connecticut with his wife and twin daughters.

A compliance guide which is a great pick-me-up and must read for anyone in the Private Fund space By Chaya Rao, Chief Compliance Officer The title of the book says it all! Mederic has nicely captured the essence of the Advisers Act and the "core" compliance requirements with its associated risks faced by private fund advisers. The book is for all times and relevant for those fresh and entering the compliance profession as well as those already immersed in it. For the novice, it is a great ready reckoner as it gives an overview of all that is of utmost importance in carrying out their compliance duties. For the experienced, it is a great reminder.....a refresher of the very foundation on which compliance was built, which can be overlooked due to other pressing and demanding areas in compliance that has grabbed one's attention over the past few years. The book is written well, easy on the eye and mind, is laid out well with just the right amount of information and sufficient depth.It reinforces the sanctity and importance of compliance work. No matter what may come and go, the "core" principles is for all times and must become the core of every compliance professional. My favorite chapter is on Trading. Mederic has demystified this rather tough topic and on soft dollars as well. Anyone new to this industry should pick up this book. It will serve as a great starter!Overall, Mederic has done a wonderful job in capturing the essence of compliance rules and practice. An Urban Goddess also understands Inner Bliss and is peaceful with herself, she has found mental clarity & spirituality. When the time is right everything will fall into place. This book shows you how to keep your head up high and have your feet firmly planted on the ground. This is an amazing book and I advise every young female who has gone through heartbreak or emotional deprivations to read it. When the time is right you will find your soulmate. I also really enjoy the inspirational quote by Eleanor Roosevelt " Do one thing everyday that scares you". This teaches you to never give up on yourself and keep aiming for your dreams and make them a reality!! Buy this amazing, inspirational and cutting edge book that will have you flipping page by page, you won't want to stop reading until the end of the book.

Smith Having read many self-help and developmental books over numerous years, it gets to the point where most start sounding alike; same ideas repeated over and over again. Lessons for an Urban Goddess is unique in that it takes ageless wisdom and communicates it in the context of the technologically advanced times we are living in. This is a relationship text book of sorts for the real world.Have you ever read a book and felt that the author was talking about you? Well that is how I felt at times while reading this well written book. Laney Zukerman dispenses practical advice that resonates with a reader who is interested in gaining deeper perspective into relationships. Even more importantly, this book tackles communication strategies to deal with the multitude of different personality types and behaviors that are evident in virtually every relationship.Generally speaking, even though this book is ostensibly written for an “urban goddess”, those men who are interested in not being “blockheads” can succeed in actually learning to reverse-engineer into a partner’s mind. If you are a man who is confused and searching for answers in your relationship, then this is an excellent place to invest your time to listen and learn how to get results.The pacing of the writing style draws a reader in and causes one to not put the book down; you want to see what Laney Zukerman says next. I certainly, for now, will be looking forward to the next book from this author.
