About the Author James E. Whaley, RPh, MS, is currently an associate professor of health sciences andchemistry at Baker College of Owosso (Michigan) and coordinator of the Pharmacy TechnicianProgram, which is offered at nine Baker College campuses. He routinely teaches coursesin the Pharmacy Technician Program in addition to anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology,and general chemistry. Mr. Whaley has taught at Baker College of Owosso since 1995and was the first recipient of the college’s prestigious Teacher of the Year award. He has beenselected as a member of Who’s Who among College Teachers numerous times. Prior to comingto Baker, Mr. Whaley was twice ranked in the top 10 percent of instructors at the Universityof Illinois, where he was awarded a fellowship in cellular and molecular biology from theNational Institutes of Health. Mr. Whaley worked as a retail pharmacist before beginning hiscareer as an educator, and he has been a registered pharmacist since 1981.Kathryn A. It has already assumed dimensions, within the short period of its existence, hardly forty years, that our European brethren can not believe it, and a smile of incredulity comes to their lips when we speak of vineyards of several thousand acres, with a product of millions of gallons per annum.But, while fully cognizant of the importance of these large enterprises, it is not for their owners that this little volume is written specially. The millionaire who is able to plant and maintain a vineyard of several thousand acres, can and should provide the best and most scientific skill to manage his vineyard and his cellars; it will be the wisest and most economical course for him, he can afford to pay high salaries, and the most costly wineries, provided they are also practical, would be a good investment for him. W.Leadbeater I have read and I was truly inspired to read it further and further. As a nautral psychic, the author writes, in his natural way, about his own experiences in the physical and astral plane while using the 'clear sight'. Moreover, it shows it is possible for mostly anyone to acquire this ability and also shows the wonderful advantages of having this so-called gift. Finally, this practical yet complex book gives a few instructions which can be useful to people like us who wish to develop and perhaps start seeing as clear as its author does.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Beautifully and clearly explained By Linda Court As with all Leadbeater's work, Clairvoyance is exceptionally well-explained. He teases apart the various types and nuances and the average reader (like myself) can readily develop an understanding for the different types due to the numerous examples he uses. Leadbeater explains why a cautionary approach needs be had when taking note of clairvoyant experiences - how credible are they, and why might they not be credible? The book ends with a clear explanation of how to (and how not to) develop clairvoyance and like all matters relating to spiritual development along the Path, there are no magic shortcuts, just diligent application built on an expanding understanding of theosophy. Very well worth reading and retaining for reference but a basic understanding of theosophical material is an expectation that Leadbeater mentions more than once.

My shul gave every bar/bat mitzvah child a copy of the Hertz Siddur and his Book of Jewish Thoughts. My copy of the Siddur has wine stains on the kiddish page. I knew very little about the personal and professional life of Rabbi Hertz before I read this book.Chief Rabbi Hertz led British Jewry from 1913 until his death in 1946. During his tenure the world fought two world wars, Britain issued the Balfour Declaration, and there were internal pressures on the Jewish community to be less observant of halacha (i.e. more British) on one side and more like an Eastern European shtetl on the other.Rabbi Hertz was the rabbi of the United Synagogue, a group of synagogues equivalent of what we call modern Orthodox. Rabbi Victor Schonfeld was the rabbi of the very Orthodox Adath Yisraol synagogue. They disagreed on many community and religious issues. But their children married each other. Son-in-law Rabbi Solomon Schonfeld became one of Hertz’s partners and supporters.Taylor spends many pages dealing with the acrimonious relationship with the vice –president of the United Synagogue, Sir Robert Waley Cohen. They disagreed on issues such as the role of the chief rabbi in the community, religious observance, kashrut, and relationship with the British government. Waley Cohen was a wealthy businessman who worked tirelessly without pay for the United Synagogue; however, he was not shomer Shabbat. After Waley Cohen’s death in 1952 the contrasting philosophies of spiritualism and halacha were rarely discussed.This is an important book for understanding Rabbi Hertz and British Jewry in general. I learned a lot about how the British experience both contrasts and mirrors the American experience. I recommend this book for all libraries. It is a bit pricey for personal collections.Daniel D. The work is incomplete, but it is the first thorough statement of Nietzsche's mature philosophy and the masterpiece of his career. It received little attention during his lifetime but its influence since his death has been considerable, in the arts as well as philosophy. Written in the form of a prose narrative, Thus Spake Zarathustra offers the philosophy of its author through the voice of Zarathustra (based on the Persian prophet Zoroaster) who, after years of meditation, has come down from a mountain to offer his wisdom to the world. It is this work in which Nietzsche made his famous (and much misconstrued) statement that "God is dead" and in which he presented some of the most influential and well-known (and likewise misunderstood) ideas of his philosophy, including those of the Ubermensch ("overman" or "superman") and the "will to power." Though this is essentially a work of philosophy, it is also a masterpiece of literature. I was redirected here from the much more widely acclaimed Parkes translation. I don't know if this was a mistake or deliberate subterfuge. But FYI, here is what Wikipedia has to say about the various translations available (this entry accords with common scholarly opinion on the translations):English translations of Zarathustra differ according to the sentiments of each translators. The Thomas Common translation favors a classic English approach, in the style of Shakespeare or the King James Version of the Bible. Common's poetic interpretation of the text, which renders the title Thus Spake Zarathustra, received wide acclaim for its lambent portrayal. Common reasoned that because the original German was written in a pseudo-Luther-Biblical style, a pseudo-King-James-Biblical style would be fitting in the English translation.The Common translation, which improved on Alexander Tille's earlier attempt,[10] remained widely accepted until the more critical translations, titled Thus Spoke Zarathustra, separately by R.J. Hollingdale and Walter Kaufmann, which are considered to convey more accurately the German text than the Common version. Kaufmann's introduction to his own translation included a blistering critique of Common's version; he notes that in one instance, Common has taken the German "most evil" and rendered it "baddest", a particularly unfortunate error not merely for his having coined the term "baddest", but also because Nietzsche dedicated a third of The Genealogy of Morals to the difference between "bad" and "evil".[10] This and other errors led Kaufmann to wonder whether Common "had little German and less English".[10] The translations of Kaufmann and Hollingdale render the text in a far more familiar, less archaic, style of language, than that of Common.Clancy Martin's 2005 translation opens with criticism and praise for these three seminal translators, Common, Hollingdale, and Kaufmann. He notes that the German text available to Common was considerably flawed, and that the German text from which Hollingdale and Kaufmann worked was itself untrue to Nietzsche's own work in some ways. Martin criticizes Kaufmann for changing punctuation, altering literal and philosophical meanings, and dampening some of Nietzsche's more controversial metaphors.[11] Kaufmann's version, which has become the most widely available, features a translator's note suggesting that Nietzsche's text would have benefited from an editor; Martin suggests that Kaufmann "took it upon himself to become his [Nietzsche's] editor".[11]Graham Parkes describes his own 2005 translation as trying "above all to convey the musicality of the text (which was not a priority for Walter Kaufmann or R.J. Hollingdale, authors of the best English translations so far)."[12]

20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Group dynamics and their consequences By Jennifer F Armstrong Nietzsche is above all a psychological thinker at his most profound. Sometimes, he extends his psychology into political theory, sometimes in a way that seems to give psychological insight to political movements. More often than not, his psychology cannot be generalized into political statements, although Nietzsche wants to do this.In his book, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, he is at his best since he is a psychologist rather than a social critic. (Where he dabbles too much into issues of politics and gender, he is inclined to err.)Nietzsche's Zarathustra is a prophet for a secular era. It's very interesting how much the ideas in the book parallel those later discovered by Wilfred Bion, especially in terms of the psychology of group dynamics. Nietzsche had insights into the ways that groups unconsciously coordinate their members to reinforce conformity and compliance. There is no place for a self-reliant individual where there is a "herd". Creativity is even less respected by the "herd", because it disrupts the unconscious mechanisms of herd organisation. Without needing to have any intellectual grasp of a reality outside of the herd, those who partake of group dynamics are still capable of annihilating anyone who thinks and acts differently from the group. The attacks by the herd against the one who stands alone and the counter-struggle for survival have psychological origins at a subliminal level.Nietzsche makes visible these otherwise hidden phenomena: he shows that generally those who stand alone are destroyed, that nobody has to say anything for these attacks to begin to occur. They happen automatically without overt provocation. It's group psychological dynamics at work.Nietzsche's solution to those who are are likely to be attacked for their qualities of independence is that they should prepare for this to happen. They should also throw all their weight into the creative side of their characters, and forget about conforming. If you have intellectual qualities, or creative qualities that distinguish you from the herd (not in your own mind, but in theirs), you may as well invest in these totally, even if it means willing your own destruction -- because the greater your ability, the more likely you are to cause disquiet in those who have chosen to relinquish their independence for the sake of being protected by the group.

By Rebecca First and foremost: this is not a review of the literary quality of Nietzsche's work, but rather of this particular publication.I've read this book several times- as I imagine is true of many of you, at various noteworthy phases of my life where it took on new and different meanings. As a result, I've read at least three distinct versions of this work, including the original German (which is a second language to me).To begin with, this is the first that included a truly comprehensive foreword regarding Nietzsche's relationship to his works along a timeline- someone coming upon "Zarathustra" as a first Nietzsche read, or as a student, will find a lot of very helpful contextualization before they even begin reading the text itself.Moving on to the text itself, I regard it as a much-needed modern interpretation of "Zarathustra." As much as Nietzsche's goal may well have been to parody religious and mystical trappings, the outdated language of the German-English translation is to many distracting and off-putting. This translation preserves the spirit of the work in modern, straightforward English without any liberties taken with the cultural nuances of the German or the overall storytelling style that was characteristic of Nietzsche at this point in his career.Overall, the best "Zarathustra" you can read. The Kindle edition is quite nicely formatted, too.

If you are a thinking person, this is an extremely useful book for you. II think it might be most useful for persons who have political, social, moral views about things of whatever persuasion,, but are uncertain how reasonable they are. The book is full of short pieces of factual discourse, whose truth you will want to investigate, as well as insights that may open your eyes, and, yes, progressive polemics for you to reflect upon. It can be useful without requiring a huge amount of time to read. Read just a couple of pieces at a time. I can also imagine some of the pieces scattered among the pages of some newsletters of local community and political organization or appearing in various venues of social media. With so much enthusiasm and so little thought flying around in our media, this volume is an important remedy. Share this book with your friends. The result, I promise, will be more enlightened discussions and, ultimately, a better society. Read and think about this book!!

This book served as a true wake up call for how I was eating and has helped launch me on a program to recapture my health. Through this book I learned that some of the "good things" I was eating weren't good at all and in fact down-right harmful. I took the author's advice and ordered certain tests from my doctor and learned some risk factors I have since corrected. I strongly recommend this if you are ready to take charge of your life and health and want to understand the underlying dangers of some of the stuff we put into our bodies. My husband normalized his sugar levels and his cholesterol is perfect. Bye-bye Lipitor! We each lost 20 pounds, not dieting, but eating clean whole food! This is a must read book!! Thank you Dr. Hyman for taking the stance to support true nutrition and health to create quality of life.

I have been doing some research on diabetes and this book was the perfect answer for me. By breaking down the original book,this author made this topic easy to understand in about half an hour for me.., and the 6 week action plan was laid out nicely. I got exactly what I needed from this book.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Great health guide for battling fatigue By Tiffany Lane Looks like Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome is becoming commonplace. I have been searching high and low for remedies for my chronic fatigue syndrome coupled with my flagging metabolism and imbalanced hormones. It always baffled me to no end as to why I was always literally exhausted and drowsy at work. Now, that I've found this health guide, I can put my fears to rest and try to use natural remedies to alleviate my symptoms instead of relying on quick fixes.

Because of my natural inclination to stay up late, this was always a struggle. It did not last long before my immune system went down, I gained some weight, felt much more stressed, and I was struggling with very low energy levels. My sleeping patterns were also very irregular even after I started working different shifts, and on my off days as well.There were often times were I just felt the lack of energy or will to do anything. Then it came to my attention that my adrenal glands were probably no longer functioning properly. I was lucky that I was subscribed to Carmen Reeves email newsletter, because I stumbled upon this book of hers and I decided to read it.This book really helped me understand what adrenal glands are, how they work as part of something called HPA axis, were multiple glands are involved in regulating the metabolism, energy levels, mood and stress. I especially liked how the symptoms are explained in Chapter 4, and why it's hard trough a conventional health care to diagnose the Adrenal Fatigue Syndrome. After that the book explains in depth how you can help your adrenal glands and your body recover naturally through healthy diet and exercise. It explains the recovery process and what to expect. Even some delicious recipes at the end are added, which I haven't tried yet.Overall, this is a great book to read if you have any of the symptoms such as me and want to live a healthier lifestyle. Self-educating is always a good thing, and knowing all this stuff will make a positive impact on your overall health as well. Recommended!

About the Author

JACK MURPHY is an eight-year Army Special Operations veteran who served as a sniper and team leader in 3rd Ranger Battalion and as a senior weapons sergeant on a military free fall team in 5th Special Forces Group.

Growing up in New York, Jack enlisted in the U.S. Army at age nineteen. Completing Infantry Basic Training, Airborne School, and the Ranger Indoctrination Program, he was assigned to 3rd Ranger Battalion. As a Ranger, he served as an anti-tank gunner, sniper, and team leader, and he graduated from Ranger School and Sniper School.

After several deployments to Afghanistan and Iraq, he attended the Special Forces Assessment and Selection course and was selected as a special forces weapons sergeant. Over a year was spent training in the Special Forces Qualification Course, including further weapons training, SERE School, language training, and more.

Assigned as the senior weapons sergeant on a military free fall team in 5th Special Forces Group, Murphy was again sent to numerous schools and training courses before being deployed to Iraq. Acting as the senior trainer and adviser to an Iraqi SWAT team, his Special Forces team conducted Direct Action and other missions across northern Iraq.

After leaving the military in 2010, he is now working towards a degree in political science at Columbia University.

Murphy is the author of Reflexive Fire, Target Deck, and the PROMIS series. As an author and managing editor for SOFREP.com, he has written numerous nonfiction articles about weapons, tactics, special operations, terrorism, and counter-terrorism. He has appeared in documentaries, on national television, and on syndicated radio as it relates to military current affairs.

Brandon Webb is a former U.S. Navy SEAL; his last assignment with the SEALs was Course Manager for the elite SEAL Sniper Course, where he was instrumental in developing new curricula that trained some of the most accomplished snipers of the twenty-first century. Webb has received numerous distinguished service awards, including the Presidential Unit Citation and the Navy Commendation Medal with a “V” for “Valor,” for his platoon’s deployment to Afghanistan following the September 11 attacks. He is editor for Military.com’s blog Kit Up, SOFREP’s Editor in Chief, and a frequent national media commentator on snipers and related Special Operations Forces military issues.PETER NEALEN stepped on the yellow footprints at MCRD San Diego in 2003. A year and a half later, he began training to be a Reconnaissance Marine. After graduating the Basic Reconnaissance Course, he deployed twice to Iraq as a Recon Marine with Bravo Co, 1st Recon Bn, before moving on to what was to become the reconstituted Force Recon Company, I MEF. By the time he finished his active service, he had qualified as a Combatant Diver, Navy/Marine Corps Parachutist, Marine Scout/Sniper, Scout/Sniper Team Leader, and Combat Tracker. He is now a Tactical Tracking Instructor, a freelance writer and contributor for SOFREP.com, and the author of the thrillers Task Force Desperate and Hunting in the Shadows.

By c langridge This book is an enormously valuable contribution to the growing body of information on the nature of Islamic violence, written by men who "have skin in the game" - the editors of SOFREP. They spend some time on the history of the IS organization, its main players, what our intelligence reveals about their aims and ambitions, and then lay out realistic, practical and practicable objectives for dealing with this enemy before it becomes any stronger. A short, valuable and very interesting listen.
