About the Author

Jane A. Soxman, DDS, is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry and a member of the American College of Dentists. She is a seminar instructor in the general practice dental residency at Allegheny General Hospital Division of Dental Medicine and general practice dental residency educational consultant at the Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Health Care System. She serves as Pediatrics Advisor on the Advisory Board, column contributor and manuscript reviewer for General Dentistry journal and maintains a private practice limited to pediatrics in Allison Park, Pennsylvania.

Great Descriptions, Interesting Internalizations, Epic Ending Reveal By Rachel Barnard “Because I knew that the small stuff is what destroys a person. Only with Angel, nothing was ever small. Even the littlest things were mountains in her mind. She would sweat everything and the more her troubles piled up, the more I felt the need to drive them away because just watching Angel try to deal with stress was painful.” – Avery (Kindle Locations 3011-3014).Angel Patel is in jail for something that her best friend Avery did, even if she’s indirectly at fault. It has been six years and Angel has slowly come to terms with being behind bars, because she blames herself for what happened. During another one of her case reviews, the story and the fascinating twist will come to light that may even surprise Angel herself.Angel was in love with the singer of Analog Controller. He was older than her, but they were meant for each other. Angel’s life was never easy before falling in love and still has its bumps in the road. Growing up in foster homes and knowing the ugly truth of how she got there causes Angel to reach out and she grasps hold of Avery. They become friends and protectors of one another, but Avery will eventually be the bad seed that leads to both of their current situations: incarceration.The author’s descriptions, though they were narrated in the author’s playback as information to the reader and not live action, were very well articulated and quite vivid. For example, “The whole place smelled like the smoke machine was set to kill—a fog of cat litter and ammonia that burned my retinas.” (Kindle Locations 522-523). I really enjoyed the writer’s way of describing the world, even if it wasn’t coming live, similar to the setup in if I stay by Gayle Forman.Since most of the action is told in flashback/playback format, much of the focus of the narration is on internalizations and thoughts and regrets and remorse, the characters thinking back to the “events.” Even so, most of the story is centered on the characters themselves more so than the events that happened and the descriptions of the events. The story is made up of Angel and Avery, with Jake and a few others thrown in. It is centered on these two girls and their intertwining stories. Rivera also employs perspective switches between Avery and Angel, separated by chapter and it’s neat to get both point of views in the story.Interestingly enough, though both gals are in jail, you want to sympathize with one and blame the other, you just don’t know which one is guilty yet. As the story progresses and the girls reveal more about themselves and what happened, you feel both more sorry for them and you like them less for what they did and how they reacted.The story gets a bit hot and steamy at points so be warned.Everything was elongated and took its time. The ending was filled with high tension but smoothly brought out in multiple spurts to finish with all questions answered and everything about Angel concluded. The only mystery: JakeIf you liked “if I stay” by Gayle Foreman and the dramatic buildup without too much present day action, then you’ll love September Rain.Disclaimer: I was given a free copy of this story in exchange for my honest review.

The plot is masterfully crafted full of suspense, emotion and plot twists. The story is set in the world of Avery and Angel, two troubled teenagers haunted by the traumatic events of their lives. These two best friends only have each other until Angel meets her first love Jake, a gorgeous, sweet rising star musician. Angel and Jake's relationship promises love and a new path in life for Angel. However, her relationship with Avery begins to drift and as their intense bond is threatened, Avery reveals a dark and dangerous side. This story placed me squarely in the worlds of high-school, foster homes, and the typical teenage experience. While I'm tempted to elaborate on the plot because I'm still (two days later) blown away, I'll hold back. I loved this book and plan on reading all of A.R. Rivera's books.

She must convince the panel that it was her one-time friend, now sworn enemy, Avery Campbell, who is actually the guilty party.In September Rain by A.R. Rivera, the reader is given a look inside Angel’s tortured mind as she relives her relationship with Jake, the first person she has ever loved, and how Avery in a jealous rage killed him. Rivera’s deft touch with the language makes this a riveting read as she shows Angel’s reactions to her surroundings and her encounters with Avery in jail. So skillful is the author in the way she puts the story together, the ending will hit you like a haymaker thrown in the dark—I’m a fan of whodunits, but this ending caught me completely by surprise.A book that will leave you breathless.

The War of Independence By Diane With the perspective of someone only 100 years removed from the Revolutionary War, John Fiske carries one along on the tumultuous ride of our forefathers. His narrative is at once informative, thought-provoking and attention-grabbing. It reads much like a work of fiction, compelling one to want to find out how it ends. Many of the facts he shares were never introduced in the public school system. In fact, it was a revelation to me that, not only were many members of the British Parliment in favor of American independence, but the British people benefitted from our struggle, as well. Another interesting angle was the illumination of Washington's military genious. I have recommended this book to my British son-in-law, in hopes he will no longer think of the colonists as self-serving brigands, whose rebellion had much more behind it than a mere desire to avoid taxes.

The author does a fantastic job of explaining why the revolution happened. I had no clue that two generations earlier, the American colonists in MA were more free. With that knowledge, the revolution makes much more sense. Also, the idea that the revolution was not Americans vs. Brits, but a war of ideas I had never heard.The author clearly states why Washington was so needed. And the plotting against him.The author also gives a great list of books to try.Picked up for free - 2,694 locations so not long at all. Definitely grab if interested in history at all.

An entertaining and insightful 19th century look at the Revolution By Gary Hoggatt As a fan of American Revolutionary history, 19th century writing, and free books, when I saw John Fiske's The War of Independence free for Kindle, I was immediately intrigued. Published in 1889, the 100th anniversary of George Washington becoming the first president and, as Fiske puts it, closing out the Revolutionary era, The War of Independence is a brisk, entertaining introductory read with surprising depth in areas that are often ignored and a writing style that has all the flavor of the late 19th century.Fiske begins his approach by explaining the different relationships with the British crown each colony had before the Revolution. This goes a long way in revealing why certain colonies were more revolutionary than others. He gives a good summary of the various military and economic stresses in the colonial/crown relationship before the Revolution sparked, such as the French and Indian War and the various acts and taxes enacted by Parliament.One of the other strengths of this book is its attention to the British politics driving their approach to the rebellion. The assorted factions vying for dominance between the King and the different Parliamentary parties goes a long way in explaining the pre-Revolution Parliamentary acts that went over so poorly and the different strategies pursued by the British during the war itself. Fiske does a fine job explaining the different British players and how their motivations affected British policy.Fiske does not get too into the actual military movements of the war. He does discuss the major battles, but he does not get into the details of any of them. For an introductory survey, this is a fair approach, and there's no shortage of entire books about the major battles, so it doesn't bother me, but it is worth noting.Fiske meant this volume as an introductory history for students. That leaves it pretty accessible even today, and his energy and pace help keep the story moving. It's still a 19th century work, though, so it's written at a higher level than one might expect today. As an analogy, consider that Robert Louis Stevenson's 1883 Treasure Island is a "boy's adventure" book of that same era, and compare it to today's YA books. Fiske's student volume bears a similar relationship to today's student non-fiction.Anyone interested in an exciting and revealing history of the Revolutionary War would do well to check out Fiske's The War of Independence. Fiske does an excellent job of telling an entertaining story, and the writing style is full of 19th century flavor while still being accessible. It's a well worth reading, and you can't beat the price.

Bilko The reason I did not give this a five star is because of some slight marks on some of the pages due to copying from, perhaps an original copy. The contents of the book is great. The combination of Mr. Manton's short quotes and the matchless short commentary by the incomparable C.H. Spurgeon makes this a great gift. I am sending this book as gifts to several friends.

The author writes in a manner that makes for an easy read. I was so satisfied with the book that I actually called the author via telephone and spoke to her. She spoke to me at length and thanked me for the call. If you are interested in getting into the zone for whatever endeavor you seek, this is the book for you.

I took sport psychology in college and it has helped me tremendously in business and life. This book is like that class but at a more detailed and practical approach. I especially like how he talks about repairing your house, starting with an inspection of the roof and listening for gasses, after a disaster. Working without such a brief inspection could be life-threatening.

All of a sudden she makes a fist, extends the pinkie on one side and the thumb on the other, and wiggles the fist with its extended digits. You are mystified. What do you do? The answer is simple: You pull out the _Field Guide to Gestures: How to Identify and Interpret Virtually Every Gesture Known to Man_ (Quirk Books) by Nancy Armstrong and Melissa Wagner. After all, it is pocket sized and full of pictures, and you always have it with you. You find the photo of the gesture, but you ignore the similar one with the fist elevated and the thumb pointed to the open mouth ("Let's Drink") or the one where the thumb is near the ear and the pinkie is near the mouth ("Call me"). No, the gesture is the "Hang Loose"; your partner in conversation is using a sign associated with Hawaiian surfers, but actually traced to Spanish explorers. The gesture derives from "Let's Drink", but as given without the "bottle" gesture, it has no implications of recreational drug use, just "take it easy". If you are in Japan, however, the gesture might mean "six." There is more information available on this gesture, and on over a hundred others in this funny and interesting book. It doesn't matter that you know most of them already; included here are pointing, nodding, hugging, rolling the eyes, and so on. You can find out the history of the gesture, where it might be misunderstood, and exactly how to make it. You will be surprised at how many gestures you already use and take for granted. For a sample, look at just a few of the gestures that can be made with the hand in a simple pointing configuration. The index finger extended from the fist is universally understood to mean "look over there". Pointing upwards, it means "one". Elevated and wagged it means "No, no, no..." Slashed across the throat it is an utmost gesture of disapproval. Inserted in and out of the fingers of the other hand, it means, well, you know. Tapping the finger on the side of the nose means "We are sharing a secret." Put to pursed lips, it is "Shhhhh!" even without the sound. Put to the side of the head and rotated it means "crazy". There is a special subtlety to this particular gesture in Japan. It means "crazy" when rotated counterclockwise, but "vain" when clockwise. This distinction, however, the authors note, is fading. Amusingly, as with other field guides, there is a disclaimer at the front of the book to say that it can't list the millions of gestures and meanings, and stressing that it therefore cannot guarantee full reliability. Of particular interest to the naughty will be the large section dealing with gestures of disrespect. If you follow the explicit "1-2-3" directions here, you can perform "The Moon" at someone, for instance. Hand signals saying about the same thing are definitely not omitted from this guide.For a reference book, I found _Field Guide to Gestures_ to be great fun. Thumbs up.

Useful and Funny Guide By Westley If you often find yourself scratching your head, shrugging, or furrowing your eyebrows in confusion because of the non-verbal gestures of others, then this book was written expressly for you! 108 gestures are described, illustrated via drawings, and explained in this handy book. The book is well-organized and gestures are divided into common-sense categories: arrival (handshake), departure (waving), approval (high five), disapproval (finger wag), mating (hair flip), offensive and profane (chin flick), just for emphasis (finger snap), and "no words needed" (crossing fingers).Although most of the gestures are likely to be familiar to most people, some obscure gestures are included as well (e.g., the fig). In addition to this basic information, the authors provide interesting facts about the origins and variations of gestures. For example, making a "W" with your finger to mean "whatever" was popularized by the 1995 movie, "Clueless." Likewise, they note that the thumbing of the nose has more names than any other gesture, including "pull a snook," "japenese fan," and "pull bacon."The authors also discuss the meanings of the gestures in various cultures. For example, in parts of Greece, nodding means "no" and shaking the head means "yes." Likewise, making horns with you hand can mean that your a rock fan in the U.S., or signify a cuckold in Mediterranean countries!Fortunately, the authors approach the subject firmly tongue-in-cheek, and I found myself laughing frequently. Each gesture is also illustrated with a color plate, some of which are hilarious, especially the profane ones that are illustrated by an older woman! A terrific, well-researched little book that is most highly recommended.

About the Author Jim Hacking has practiced law in the greater St. Louis area since 1997. For the past seven years, Jim’s practice has been devoted almost exclusively to immigration law. By Gabriel Silva Man, I wish I have read this book on my freshman year of college!What I most liked about the book is that Hacking is really straight forward. He explains how it works and what would be the most efficient path to follow to stay here. And all based on examples of his clients that succeed doing what Hacking calls the "10 key steps to follow to better your chances of staying in the U.S"I would recommend all the International Students to read this book! Specially if you just got in the United States and have plans on staying here..Straight forward, easy reading, great content!

I love the way the author shares her experiences, her thoughts, and her hopes and fears. It causes me to reflect on my own experiences, thoughts, hopes, and fears. This book is masterfully captivating in the way it draws the reader in and imparts understanding. It inspires me to be grateful for what I've been through and to praise God for His intervention in my life. Be prepared to have a fresh encounter with God when you read this!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. I am glad I did. By Steven L Messer I have known the Author since we "dated" at age 16. Initially I was not going to read this book, because of our past, but I am glad I did. The book is well written, and it is easy to go to the places she describes (maybe too easy for some of them). Her description of the garden and the oak tree and little boy was almost predictable and I told myself I would not let it get to me, but it did. Even now as I write this I have tears in my eyes and the screen has gone blurry, but it is good. Thankfully we know her life gets better with time and we find that she has not lost her faith in God nor hope that things will continue to get better. We remember what we knew, that no matter what is done to us, or what we do, we are God's children and He loves us unconditionally, just as we love our children - all of them.I encourage you to take your trip through this story, you won't regret it.

Kathi digs deep down to reveal her deepest thoughts, pain and, yes, HOPE! A hope that she quickly shares with everyone she encounters, offering of herself and exposing the fears and doubts she experienced, so others can see the hope for themselves. I've known Kathi for quite a while now and remember so clearly when she shared her story with me and how we shed tears together. Tears, that I am sure were bittersweet, as she could never change what happened in her past, but mingled with the joy that comes from knowing that she is a forever changed daughter of the Most High and that her sweet children are safe in His arms. Kathi's main goal is to be Christ's hand extended to reach a hurting world with love and compassion. Love the book and love Kathi!!!
