This book provided all the information I needed to be better educated regarding hyperthyroidism when the doctor asks about specific symptoms. ‘The Hyperthyroidism Handbook’ describes what exactly hyperthyroidism is, the symptoms, and possible treatment options. This is the best resource I've found when it comes to hyperthyroidism and I would recommend this book to anyone dealing with this disease.

Not as strong as shelf life pediatrics or obgyn, but has additional outline in the back for quick review. If you are studying for the IM shelf, this is a decent short resource for the first week of the rotation as it hits on some integral points. The questions are too easy / straight forward and the scope too narrow to rely on for comprehensive shelf prep, however. It fits in white coat pocket and can provide entertainment on a slow service, but do not substitute for IM essentials / MKSAP or UWorld.

Lets face it, you don't have much time to do anything outside of the hospital anyways and studying is definitely not on the list of fun things to do. When you're faced with this situation, you need a resource that is comprehensive, reliable, and quick. THIS IS IT! I used this book throughout the clerkship and read the chapters one by one. A case here and chapter there. Took the test timed then went through the high yield information before the exam. This was perfect. It was a great supplement to my learning and it got me the score I needed to shine! These guys created an amazing book. I wish I knew about this for my other clerkships. Good luck everyone!

It was a summer of new terminology: skate, gangion, gurdy. A kid trying to fit into a man’s world, Adams threw himself into the job the way a boy throws himself into anything new: eagerly, clumsily, and with a whole lot of good intentions but not much ability. There is no way to stop reading before you find out what happens to the Grant, a halibut schooner skippered by two generations of the author's family.Anyone who has watched the Seattle fleet of halibut schooners migrate every year up to the Alaska fishing grounds and marveled at their elegance and durability, will appreciate the shame the author feels in that opening chapter.In the first few pages of Four Thousand Hooks, we learn the author, barely 16-years-old, has hit a log on his wheel watch. The boat is sinking and the author may have to live the rest of his life with the memory of letting down the crew, losing his uncle's source of livelihood and sinking one of the most magnificent fishing boats ever built.Before we find out what happens, we get a good idea of what's it like to break in on a halibut schooner. Once she leaves the dock, the Grant becomes its own isolated world with its own tough, moral traditions and standards--a dramatic transition for a 16-year-old boy.The ending of this good read is even more amazing than the beginning. In a nice touch at the very end, we are brought back full circle to the model boat the author's grandfather gave him just before the old man went into a nursing home

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I was there! By Dr. W. Lloyd Jerome I knew absolutely nothing about the life of a deep-sea fisherman before I read this book. I've never even seen "the deadliest catch". I did tend to lump the job into the same category as coal-mining in terms of its attractiveness and sheer hard work. So when I read "Four Thousand Hooks" I was coming to it from the perspective of an absolute newcomer, and wanted to learn something of the life, as well as looking for a good story.Well, I got both. This is a captivating, fluidly-written and humorous book with a great tale to tell. I was, despite reading the book on a hot an humid day in the sub-tropics, transported to the cold, exhausting and relentless challenge that the writer went through. He starts as a child, out of his depth, with everything to learn. By the end, only weeks later, he is an adult, and a fisherman too. In the process, I learnt more than I ever could from documentaries or films, seeing fishing through the eyes of a seasoned mariner with a clear memory and wonderful descriptive voice.Thank you Mr Adams, for a wonderful story, well and simply told. You are a great writer, and I'm looking forward to your next book!

This is in the 70's. Things change and much of this is just not there anymore. This may be the only author who will ever write truly of this life. And it is his true story. And he captures the voice of his fifteen year old self and tells that story grandly.Oh. They have to abandon ship.I believe people call this sort of a book a page-turner. I claim this book will appeal to many different people. And I suspect it will never become unread and forgotten.Give it to your kids and read it yourself.I wrote the above about 70% into the book. I was reading about the young Adams reflecting on the adult insights he had found. His remarks made me wish to hang up my clothes! I was reminded of Gretchen Rubin's "Secrets of Adulthood". Anything that might get me to consider growing up is impressive. :-) I have now finished the book. There is a spirital component towards the end and I though of Melville and Homer and others. Note the author got a "D" in eighth grade English and was given to understand he could not write.

Most of us know the basics of where scotch whisky comes from but little of the detail behind it all. The opening chapters can be a little dry but provide and excellent narration of what the process was in the 1800's both in Scotland and Ireland. The middle section with all the distillery visits livens up a bit and is an excellent source to contrast and compare to the writings of Alfred Barnard in 'The Whisky Distilleries of the United Kingdom'. The included etchings are also terrific, especially in the article on Glenlivet from the Illustrated London News. Each article has its own one-page introduction that explains the background of each. Great for whisky history buffs!

Putting a Name on Ideas Unnameable By Michael Holmes Nitobe Sensei did an incredible job of putting into words concepts that are very difficult for all to understand, not only foreigners (non-Japanese.) He also did it as a Christian scholar in a non-Christian land during times of great change in Japanese society. It is a wonderful cross-cultural and cross-theological comparison between Christian and non-Christian belief systems. There's a saying about being able to explain things that are Zen. "If you can explain it, it isn't Zen," if I may paraphrase. Zen and Bushido are inextricably linked and Mr. Nitobe managed to put it into some sort of framework that we could easily understand. Not all things will make sense to the first time reader. When you read it again and again, the things that are true for you, you will clearly understand. As with many discussions of Zen and/or Bushido, it has to become a part of you to be understandable. This doesn't mean you have to pick up a sword or take up calligraphy, it means that you have to see the truth of it in yourself, no matter what you do or where you are. There are universal truths here. Even when you understand, you may not be able to put into words your understanding. That is the time when this book will become most indispensible.

Fundamental Cornerstone on the Driving Force of Japan By William Simon Nitobe's book is an excellent read for anyone who wants a comprehensive look at the pulse of what drives the Japanese to produce and achieve in war and economics. His writing style is clean and practical rather than sophisticated or complicated. He emphasizes the virtues and concepts that make up the Bushido ethnic.This book is a superb companion piece to Ruth Benedict's sociological analysis on Japanese culture (The Chrysanthemum and the Sword, printed near or after the Second World War). I strongly encourage anyone interested in the formative aspects of Japanese thought to read this book.

Ricketts I picked up a copy of this book a few months ago in part because I had just been employed by a Japanese company and I felt it was in my best interest to deepen my understanding of Bushido as it is still an important part of Japanese culture and more specifically corporate culture. Inazo Nitobe's treatment of Bushido is unfortunately shallow. He innumerates a number of "virtues" that are important in Bushido but does not dig very deeply into them. After reading about half of the book I feel that I do not have a deeper understanding of some of the peculiar quirks of Japanese culture.If one is looking to deepen their understanding of Bushido I would suggest Sir George Sansom's three volume set "A History of Japan", as it is yet the standard in Japanese historical studies. Also, "Training the Samurai Mind" is a wonderful collection of translated primary documents written by samurai who lived primarily during the Edo period. Also, Miyamoto Musashi's "Book of Five Rings" is another useful book for those interested in samurai and Bushido.If one is simply interested in depending their understanding of Japanese culture I suggest undertaking a study of Confucianism, Buddhism, Shinto, and of course Sansom's books. Nitobe's book is unfortunately a giant waste of time.

However, it's heavy reading and a bit dated so many time I'll have to read through a paragraph multiple times in order to get the intended meaning of it. This is made worse by the fact that the OCR software that was used to scan in the book is imperfect... so many times it's difficult to tell if Locke is just expressing something in a way that is confusing to me, or if it's confusing because one of the words is wrong, or both.

Mr. Stookey, 83 years old, is found lying face up on the floor next to his bed. The diagnosis: He has suffered from a severe stroke, the right size of his body from head to toe is paralyzed, and he is unable to speak or swallow. With no signs of improvement, the family is faced with a decision - to move Mr. Stookey to a nursing home or bring him home to die by withholding food and water.Do Go Gentle is intriguing and mildly disturbing. Many questions come to mind such as: What other solutions could have been made? Did the son (also the author of the book) do his best in accurately upholding his father's wishes based on the little information his father provided? Or did the son assume his father's wishes and interpret "clues" to justify his decisions? What were these so-called clues? Could they have been interpreted differently? Were Mr. and Mrs. Stookey and the daughter, Lori, in full agreement with the son's "plan"? or did they simply go along with what was already decided? What does the story really reveal?Although recounting real events, this book reads like fiction -- captivating and suspenseful. Why did Mrs. Stookey have a blank look when the nurse asked for Mr. Stookey's advanced directive? Why did Mrs. Stookey, the son, Chris, and the daughter, Lori, not know Mr. Stookey's emergency arrangements and yet . . . . how does the ten-year family doctor whom the son never met previously, presume to explicitly articulate Mr. Stookey's wishes? What really was the "Hemlock file" and why didn't the son share this file earlier on? Lastly, who exactly is Mr. Stookey and why is his life story, in and of itself, so inspirational?I highly recommend Do Go Gentle for anyone who has a loved one. I also recommend this book as a primary source and required reading for college courses dealing with humanities and ethics.Throughout the book, the son reveals love and admiration for his father. My favorite quote: 'I must have been three or four years old . . . I'm holding onto [my dad's] head and we're both smiling at the camera. We look happy.' - Chris Stookey
