The Cosby Cohort: Blessings and Burdens of Growing Up Black Middle Class (Perspectives on a Multiracial America), by Cherise A. Harris

Review While the Cosby kids on television always seemed happy and well-adjusted, the cohort of middle-class black youth across the country that was watching the Cosby family were having a harder time of it. Harris offers the voices of African Americans who look back at their childhoods and see their aspirations for greater success, their alienation from blackness, and the difficulties of navigating the two pressures. The Cosby Cohort powerfully discredits the myth of a monolithic black experience and raises the continuing uncertainties around black sociopolitical unity in the context of increasing racial residential integration and uneven socioeconomic success. It is a revealing and moving account of forging new black identities. (Mary Pattillo, author of Black on the Block: The Politics of Race and Class in the City)Through captivating interview excerpts and a sophisticated analysis that shows great depth and sensitivity, Harris sheds new light on the often overlooked complexities of growing up in the Black middle class. The Cosby Cohort is groundbreaking and is essential reading for anyone interested in the growing heterogeneity of the African American community and the implications of the increasing class diversity for intra-racial relations, group cohesion, and Black identity development. This book will no doubt become an instant classic. (Nikki Khanna, University of Vermont, author of Biracial in America)A significant contribution. A deeply important analysis on equally important questions. In The Cosby Cohort, Cherise A. Harris weaves a poignant and heartbreaking tale of the costs of systemic racism in the United States. (David L. Brunsma, Virginia Tech)Harris offers an interesting insight into the life experiences of 'second generation middle class blacks.' Based on interviews with adult African American men and women who had grown up during the 1980s and 1990s with parents who were the first to achieve middle-class status, the book explores the ways in which this precarious status influenced child-rearing strategies and socialization. She dubbed her informants the 'Cosby Cohort' because of both the era in which they were raised and the fact that The Cosby Show represented the same group she was interested in interviewing. Many informants compared the lessons transmitted in The Cosby Show to their own experiences growing up, where educational achievement and speaking standard English, among other things, were highly emphasized. Harris poses the question of what was gained and what was lost. Though everyone she studied had achieved professional success, many had struggled against the claim that they were 'acting white' and thus felt isolated from both the black and white communities; they were culturally and socially adrift. Harris's book offers insights into the complexities of living in this cultural and racial space. Summing Up: Recommended. All levels/libraries. (CHOICE)The Cosby Cohort examines the now-grown children who were raised in the black middle class. This probing book studies how their parents established their middle class position, how they interact with white America, the pressures placed upon them by their parents, how they connect with African Americans of other social classes, and more. Even though these young African Americans grew up watching The Cosby Show, as the book reveals, their stories reveal a much more complex reality than portrayed by the show.

About the Author Cherise Harris is associate professor of sociology at Connecticut College. She has published articles in a number of journals, including Race, Gender, and Class, and Teaching Sociology. is the coeditor of the book Getting Real about Race: Hoodies, Mascots, Model Minorities, and Other Conversations.

It was eye-opening and great for those of us who teach undergraduate courses on race relations, racial identity, and issues surrounding social class. It's well-written and a smooth read and I couldn't put it down. Drawing on the image of the fictional Cosby family (which btw was a must watch in our house every week growing up!), Harris shows how the real experiences of those who grew up in the black middle class at this time were more complex and challenging than what was presented to Cosby audiences. Highly recommend!

Galik I suspect that at some time in their life, most people are called upon to accompany a loved one through the twilight, to the Universal journey's end. How much more challenging that task must be when the road continues on for years, while their loved one stares back, desperate for help no one can give. Or possibly worse, stares back with no comprehension, their shared memories having slipped away.Annie Schlesinger has documented her role as caregiver throughout her husband's five-year journey in WALKING THE TIGHTROPE. I applaud her scrupulous honesty in not only describing her strengths, but also those moments and days of self-doubt, anger and discouragement. Her book is made up of short essays or observations that read like poetry. Oh, not that it's poetic, merely judicious in its selection and use of words. In the end her book is a testament that love can survive even one of life's cruelest trials. But it ain't easy.Kudos to the author for her candor and willingness to share herself. I can't imagine that any one who reads this won't feel the same.

And as soon as I did, I passed it on to others to read. There's a lot of sadness in the world, but there's a lot of love and support, too.

Excerpt from Science in the KitchenThe interest in scientific cookery, particularly in cookery as related to health, has manifestly increased in this country with the last decade, as is evidenced by the success for instruction in cookery in various parts of the United States. While those in charge of these schools have presented to their pupils excellent opportunities for the acquirement of dexterity in the preparation of toothsome and tempting viands, but little attention has been paid to the science of dietetics, or what might be termed the hygiene of cookery.A little less than ten years ago the Sanitarium at Battle Creek, Mich., established an experimental kitchen and a school of cookery under the supervision of Mrs. Dr. Kellogg, since which time, researches in the various lines of cookery and dietetics have been in constant progress in the experimental kitchen, and regular sessions of the school of cookery have been held. The school has gradually gained in popularity, and the demand for instruction has become so great that classes are in session during almost the entire year.During this time, Mrs. Kellogg has had constant oversight of the cuisine of both the Sanitarium and the Sanitarium Hospital, preparing bills of fare for the general and diet tables, and supplying constantly new methods and original recipes to meet the changing and growing demands of an institution numbering always from 500 to 700 inmates. These large opportunities for observation, research, and experience, have gradually developed a system of cookery, the leading features of which are so entirely novel and so much in advance of the methods heretofore in use, that it may be justly styled, A New System of Cookery. It is a singular and lamentable fact, the evil consequences of which are wide-spread, that the preparation of food, although involving both chemical and physical processes, has been less advanced by the results of modern researches and discoveries in chemistry and physics, than any either department of human industry. Iron-mining, glass-making, even the homely art of brick-making, and many of the operations of the farm and the dairy, have been advantageously modified by the results of the fruitful labors of modern scientific investigators. But the art of cookery is at least a century behind in the march of scientific progress. The mistress of the kitchen is still groping her way amid the uncertainties of medieval methods, and daily bemoaning the sad results of the "rule of thumb."About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Family kitchen adventures By ERIC M JOHNSON We have never said we were 'cooking a meal', but have always described it as an adventure in kitchen science. Rather than insisting that, "no, you must always cook this way", we've had some hilarious fun experimenting. This book has added to our ideas, and we'd recommend it for other "like open-minded and adventurous" souls braving the joys and terrors of the kitchen arena!

The opinions of the time are quite apparent ie those who eat chile peppers are more inclined to drink alcohol since water can not quench the thirst the hot peppers create. All in all it is an interesting read.

By Mike V I gave it some stars because of the value for historians. The description in the kindle store and/or the first page should include the year that it was originally published.
