The US Constitution was written for the benefit of the common man and woman, so they could pursue life and liberty without the permission of the state. They are the shoulders every American stands on, and are the fountain of American Exceptionalism. They are the ones who first begin the trek up the hill, passing off the Constitutional blueprint to the next generation and the next, until their children replace the elites who eventually pass into history. America has always renewed itself like Christianity. So, this book is a celebration of the common man and women and their shoulders.

On July 20, 2012, twelve people were killed and fifty-eight wounded at a mass shooting in a movie theater in Colorado. In 1999, thirteen kids at Columbine High School were murdered by their peers. In 2012, twenty children and seven adults were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary. Thirty-two were killed at Virginia Tech. Twelve killed at the Washington Navy Yard. In May 2014, after posting a YouTube video of ‘retribution” and lamenting a life of “loneliness, rejection, and unfulfilled desires,” a lone gunman killed six and wounded seven in Isla Vista. All of these acts of violence were committed by young men between the ages of eighteen and thirty.Mass violence committed by young people is now an epidemic. In the first fourteen school days of 2014, there were seven school shootings, compared to twenty-eight school shootings in all of 2013. The reasons behind this escalating violence, and the cultural forces that have impugned a generation, is the subject of the important new book The Spiral Notebook.New York Times-bestselling author Stephen Singular has often examined violence in America in his critically-acclaimed books. Here he has teamed with his wife Joyce for their most important work yet — one that investigates why America keeps producing twenty-something mass killers. Their reporting has produced the most comprehensive look at the Aurora shooting yet and draws upon the one group left out of the discussion of violence in America: the twenty-somethings themselves. While following the legal proceedings in the Aurora shooting, The Spiral Notebook is full of interviews with Generation Z, a group dogged by big pharma and anti-depressants and ADHD drugs, by a doomsday/apocalyptic mentality present since birth, and by an entertainment industry that has turned violence into parlor games.Provocative and eye-opening, The Spiral Notebook is a glimpse into the forces that are shaping the future of American youth, an entire generation bathed in the violence committed by their peers.

The Spiral Notebook: The Aurora Theater Shooter and the Epidemic of Mass Violence Committed by American Youth, by Stephen Singular, Joyce Singular

Review ''The Singulars offer a harrowing look at the crime and the courtroom drama. They explore the complex legal battles, particularly over the issue of Holmes' sanity and a spiral notebook that might hold the key to determining his state of mind… This is a compelling look at gun control, mental-health treatment, and the underlying social issues that contribute to rising violence, especially that committed by young men, in our nation.'' --—Booklist Starred Review''A disturbing yet fascinating treatise…What makes this book special is that for every theory they present, the Singulars reference not only experts in psychology, sociology, crime, and other fields but also twenty-somethings…These acts may never be fully understood, but this work certainly helps the process along. Tragic, gripping, and authentic, this book deserves a wide audience.'' --—Kirkus Starred Review''A harrowing look at the crime and the courtroom drama…Address[es] the broader debate about whether publicizing Holmes' diary or the videotapes made by the Columbine shooters glorifies the killers or offers valuable insights into their behavior…This is a compelling look at gun control, mental-health treatment, and the underlying social issues that contribute to rising violence, especially that committed by young men, in our nation.'' --Booklist (starred review)''Unable to explore Holmes' psychological history, the authors instead focus on sociological phenomena contributing to 'the epidemic of mass violence committed by American youth'…Violent video games, ready availability of firearms, and a militaristic culture all contribute to the escalation in mass murders.'' --Library Journal''The Singulars looked at a number of factors that could potentially unwrap the complexity of young male shootings, particularly the issue of young males experiencing a crisis of masculinity in the twenty-first century.'' --Vice magazine

About the Author Stephen Singular has published twenty books about high profile crimes and their impact on society. His articles have appeared in New York Magazine, Psychology Today, Inside Sports, The New York Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, and American Photo.Joyce Singular is a researcher and collaborator on a number of titles with her husband, adding a female perspective on the nature of crime. They don’t have any background for this and many don’t have any grounding in morality or spirituality. A lot of males of my generation have been raised without fathers. They try to act as if this doesn’t bother or affect them, but it does. They’re insecure about it, but never talk about that. They don’t have male role models who can show them how to behave not just physically, but emotionally. Or their fathers are so caught up in their work that they never take the time to do this. How do you deal with anger or fear when it comes up inside of you? How do you manage yourself when something deeply upsets or hurts you? If you don’t have a parent, especially one of your own gender, to look to for this kind of guidance, it makes it doubly hard to grow up. In the absence of these role models, what do you have? Action characters in video games and movies.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. The Spiral Notebook By Brendan Moody This is an odd hybrid: half a conventional true crime account of the Aurora theater shooting, half a reflection on the causes of mass shootings more generally. The former is solid, unexceptionable work of its type, hampered only by the facts that the trial is ongoing and that the title document, written by James Holmes and possibly revealing his psychological state, remains unavailable to the general public. There's a tetchy quality to the authors' discussion of the delays and secrecy surrounding the trial. A cynic might attribute this to frustration that they've been following the case for years and have only gotten half a book out of it, but that would be unfair. The Singulars want a speedy resolution, I think, because they imagine that the completion of the trial and the revelation of the notebook's contents will explain the Aurora shooting, and provide answers to the larger question of why such things happen. But I'm not sure that's true, and that disagreement cuts to the heart of my issues with this well-intentioned, thoughtful book. Two members of the Singular family are credited as authors of The Spiral Notebook, but the writers' son Eric is also a major influence. In the aftermath of the Aurora shooting, the family engaged in a conversation about how contemporary society has shaped and warped people of Eric's generation. Let's be clear: it's great that they had this dialogue, and it's great that it gave the family a greater sense that they understood and appreciated each other. But the degree to which Eric's personal influences and opinions have shaped this book's treatment of an entire generation is a problem. The meaning of alternative media to "millenials" is a valuable subject, but why talk about Vice in particular, except that it's what Eric happens to know? I'm aware that a lot of guys think, like Eric, that Fight Club is a big deal, but then a lot of us don't. A breathless and initially baffling late chapter on the intriguing but tentative possible benefits of yoga and mindfulness because clearer when we learn that Eric Singular has taken up the practice. Scattered quotes from interviews with others in his age group give an impression of a wider focus, but one suspects they've been carefully chosen to reflect the things the authors have already decided are important. One of the many commendable aspects of The Spiral Notebook is that its social critique is wide-ranging. Gun control, mental health, bullying, foreign policy, economic stability: there's barely an aspect of modern American life that the Singulars don't take issue with. But trying to tackle all of that in half of a 318-page book means that there isn't much room for argumentation or nuance. Apart from scattered citation of statistics about the rise of mass violence and the increase in heavy use of psychoactive drugs, the authors tend to assert rather than argue, which will have many readers nodding at certain points, shaking their head at others, and rarely being persuaded to look at the subject in a new way. Personally, I found myself most frustrated by the authors' perception of my own generation as uniquely disillusioned and out of touch with the beliefs of the wider society. Young people must always confront and cope with the ways in which the values on which they were reared conflict with and complicate adult life, and I really don't think, despite a brief, hand-waving effort to explain how today's counter-culture kids are different from those of the 60s and the 70s, that the frustrations and protest movements of today are much distinct from those of the past. The real question, though, is to what extent a wide-ranging discontent can explain a disproportionately visible but small-scale phenomenon like mass violence. There may be a current "epidemic" by comparison to previous decades, but the absolute number of people committing acts of mass violence is still miniscule. To what extent can we assume that these deeply troubled individuals are different in degree rather than kind from their conflicted but not violent contemporaries, that they are products of a sort of perfect storm of common social failings rather than of distinctive biological or environmental circumstance? The issues under discussion in this book are important, but their importance doesn't stand or fall on their possible contribution to mass violence. Bullying is a social problem even if the idea (echoed here) that it was a significant factor in the Columbine shooting has been convincingly debunked. Part of the reason our society can't make any progress on major questions of our time is that we only talk about them after extreme, headline-generating cases. We talk about guns and mental health after mass shootings, about bullying after tragic suicides, about bigotry after a celebrity says something stupid or careless. But gun violence hurts many more people than mass shooting victims, and bullying scars even the vast majorities who don't commit suicide. In some ways the social commentary of this book might be more powerful if it were entirely divorced from the question of mass violence. To return, then, to the spiral notebook. The Singulars seem to believe, or to hope, that because Holmes was smarter than some mass shooters, and because he was studying the workings of the mind, his notebook will lay bare not only his only motivations but the logic (as it were) of mass shootings more generally. But every mass shooter is different. There can be no Rosetta Stone for their minds, any more than Eric Singular can speak for his generation. The best thing about The Spiral Notebook is its warm-hearted optimism, its emphasis on the importance of community, acknowledgement, and understanding for the general welfare. But part of understanding is acceptance of complexity, recognition that some dilemmas remain inexplicable or insoluble and that a hunger for simple and satisfying answers can exacerbate the problems it's meant to solve. This is a valuable book for those looking for an introduction to the social and political topics that surround mass violence, but its limitations make it a place to begin rather than a one-stop guide.

By SundayAtDusk The The Spiral Notebook: The Aurora Theater Shooter and the Epidemic of Mass Violence Committed by American Youth is a highly readable book, but does it offer any new insights in mass violence committed by young men? It covers topics that have been addressed over and over again--violence in video games and movies, availability of guns and ammunition, bullying, drugs prescribed by doctors and psychiatrists, obsessions with superheroes and post apocalyptic stories, reading limited to comic books or online sources, etc. It concentrated a little on drinking, probably not anywhere near as much as it should have. That's true of marijuana usage, too, if it was even mentioned in the book. Also, organized religion, or the lack there of, was oddly hardly mentioned. To make this book different from the rest on the topic, authors Stephen and Joyce Singular used their own twenty-something son, Eric, as the main spokesperson for his generation. I'm also wondering if they did that to show other parents how they didn't really know what their son was thinking, until he started talking to them about the topics in this book. Thus, they could understand how parents of murderous young men could be truly shocked when they got a call from the police or press. The quotes from Eric and others from his generation in the book are interesting, but nothing new. In fact, many sound exactly like the sentiments expressed by other twenty-something individuals of past generations, such as those during the 1960s. No, life isn't like it was back in the 1960s, but the desire of some young people to change the world, to make it better, is the same; just as the complaint that parents cannot possibly understand their children's generation. The main murderer concentrated on in The Spiral Notebook: The Aurora Theater Shooter and the Epidemic of Mass Violence Committed by American Youth is of course James Holmes, who killed 12 people and wounded 70 in a Colorado theater that was showing a Batman movie in 2012. His trial is still going on today, as I write this review, and his spiral notebook is finally being read in court. Hence, the Singular's book has nothing from the notebook in it, so it is extremely odd that they would name their book after that then unknown-to-the-public notebook. James Holmes probably isn't the best twenty-something killer to look at either. He is one unusual person, who actually makes one think of the maxim that the line between genius and insanity is thin. Thus, why he did what he did might have little to do with why other men in his generation kill. All these young men made the same decision, however--the decision to kill. Personally, my interest in why they kill is limited, since I don't find such killers to be anything but total failures in living their current lifetime and overcoming suffering they should have overcome, as opposed to seeing their suffering as so special that they had the right to make others suffer.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Had The Potential To Be Great, But Missed On Several Levels By Frederick S. Goethel The Colorado theater massacre was one of the worst mass shootings in history, until that point in time, and lessons learned from the events and the shooter had the potential to reveal what goes through the mind of a mass murderer and what we can do to start to reduce the number of these incidents in the future. The information presented about the actually shooting, and the shooter were excellent and provided interesting information about the crime. The case, however, is under a gag order from the court, so the amount of information and the number of sources was limited. That hampered the efforts to discuss the shootings to the level they deserved. The information about why this is happening is, in my opinion, lacking. Interviewing people of the generation that is usually involved in these shooting revealed a broad spread of ideas, but many of them lacked credible substance. I can't really get to enthused about the idea that they have "lived with war and violence their whole lives" or that there they are under tremendous strain to perform well. I grww up in the sixties. We went from being worried about being vaporized by nuclear weapons every day to the Vietnam war on the nightly news and we lived in a constant state of war for a decade. Yet my generation isn't involved in mass shootings.I do think that the student who pointed to easy access to guns and to violent video games and movies are on to something. The violence portrayed in these venues has no cost associated with it. While I grew up with the Roadrunner getting run over all the time, it wasn't real. The video games portray real violence to real people with no consequences. In the end, it isn't the kids fault for these. The parents need to limit exposure to these games instead of using them as electronic baby sitters. Our daughter was exposed to them, but we never allowed them in our house. We wanted to promote a culture of reading and activity…not sitting around playing games of fantasy on TV.In the long run, the biggest failure of this book was to write and issue it before the trail is settled. The trail is currently ongoing, and a lot more information would have been available had the authors simply waited for the trail to take place. The premise of the book surrounds the spiral notebook, yet no one has even seen the contents. The authors should have waited to get as much information as possible before going to press. It would have made for a much more complete book.

Night Drawings and Meditations is a beautiful collection of fifty-eight deeply thoughtful passages, as in the following, which like all the meditations, is beautifully illustrated in full-color with equally thoughtful borders, to enhance the meditation’s mood and energy: “The ripples of our every conscious movement are what others who follow must swim in. Beauty touches us like water and air. LOVE ADDS BUOYANCY.” Created over a period of years, the fifty-eight poetic passages and images came to Hutchinson during nighttime meditations, and have universal meanings that reflect divine beauty and wisdom. Hutchinson here offers the collection to others who are on their own spiritual journey. Night Drawings and Meditations continues Hutchinson’s outpouring of spiritual books, which include her illustrated version of Rabindranath Tagore’s poems, Fireflies; her own illustrated philosophical poems, Songs of Symmetry; her One Hundred Color Meditations on the Sacred Healing Buddha; and her account of her spiritual journey to a mountain in India, My Palitana.

This book contains proven steps and strategies on how to incorporate the basic elements of Zen Buddhism into your life and reap the benefits that are bound to follow. Through Zen, you will be able to let go of those thoughts that are plaguing you, and reach a complete and utter peace of mind. Because the principles of Zen Buddhism affect the mind the personal intellect can have a hard time grasping its concept. Therefore, the pages of this book are meant for informational purposes, not as instructions. This book attempts to provide: the tools necessary to begin the study of the mind, and with the help of Zazen, see into one’s own nature. Many people will tell you that it is just a matter of sitting without goals, but the truth is far from it. This so called ‘sitting’ is an entire journey of self-discovery, of an intimate, spiritual self-development. During which time you train your mind to focus better and unveil your life’s purpose. Zen Buddhism invites you to transform yourself spiritually and live in harmony with the world and the people around you. While many other religions can say the same, Zen Buddhism always strives for the purification of the mind. It urges you to face yourself, to face everything you like and dislike about who you are and what you do. Buddhism also challenges you to change the fundamental precepts of the life you have been taught so far, regarding materialism, ambition, pride, greed and revenge. Rather, it pushes you towards a general goodness of being. Wisdom, empathy, charity, tolerance and discipline are encouraged to grow. The results of this spiritual cultivation are numerous. Most importantly, you will begin a journey that all humans strive for in this world: the attainment of a meaningful and joyful life, where you are focused and aware of every single moment.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Inaccurate and Full of Numerous Issues By Lisa Shea I ran a feudal Japan newsletter for over ten years and have loved the study of yoga, meditation, and Buddhism for far longer than that. So I was intrigued to see what this short summary of material might contain. If a book is this short my hope is that it'll be clear, insightful, meaningful, and well written. After all, the author didn't have hundreds of pages to handle, like most books out there. This one is barely 23 pages. And two of those are the dense copyright page content.Unfortunately we start right off with sentences that are clearly in need of editing help:"While it is impoosible to learn (and for that matter, teach) Zen Buddhism as an intellectual discipline one learns from books, it is still possible to get acquainted iwth its principles, beliefs and practices to the point where one can use them as tools for self-improvement."Who edited this and let that get through? It's not that I grabbed the one sentence that had an issue. The entire book is like this. There are typos, grammatical errors, word mis-use and sentence construction issues. Mis-capitalizations. Sentences randomly change tense or sense-matching partway through.OK, so the book needs immense help with editing. How about the content?Sure, Zen Buddhism invites you to "live in harmony with the world and people around you." I'm sure most religions and ways of life will claim this. But "avoiding evil, focusing on doing good" - what?? A key aspect of Buddhism in general and Zen Buddhism in particular is that this kind of dualistic thought is wrong! This from a book which states "This document is geared towards providing exact and reliable information."The book states that "Zen ... refers to Zen meditation or Zazen, which is always done in a seated position." I can't even go into how many different ways this is wrong. And then we're told that all there is to Zen Buddhism is to sit and not think. That's it, no further instructions.A large part of this book is about Buddhism in general, not about Zen in particular. So as short as this book is, it's not even addressing its key focus well. It instead gives us generic information about the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path which, again, isn't written well.Zen Buddhism absolutely needs a short, concise book which helps its readers learn more about what it's about. Unfortunately this book here is poorly written, contains inaccuracies, and most of it isn't even about Zen Buddhism. I'm concerned about people who read this and now believe they understand what Zen Buddhism is about. Not recommended.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A small book with a Buddhist feel but lacking in specifics By Allen Smalling As an overview, it is not bad. As a promise ("A simple and easy Buddhism guide so you can find peace and happiness") the first, simple-and-easy half is fulfilled but the latter, find-inner-peace-and-happiness part, is woefully overstated. Still, there is some benefit in understanding that most schools of Buddhism, unlike the monolithic monotheisms of the West, has more to do with mindset than pounding dogma. The low price of this paperback and in particular the zero price of the Kindle download makes it hard to resist. Just don't expect too much.

The latest volume in this esteemed series features special sections devoted to investigating the topic of transgender children and to revisiting Berta Bornstein’s seminal classic, the "Frankie" case. Other contributions include clinical case illustrations that illuminate how child analysis tutors psychoanalytic technique for adult patients, as well as reflections on the frequently neglected topic of post-termination in child analysis. A section highlighting applied psychoanalysis includes a probing discussion of the role of sports in the development of boys’ superego formation and a reading of the character of Achilles in The Iliad from the perspective of sibling narratives and non-linear growth.

I love my kindle but prefer it for books that I'm just going to read through--something I don't do with my cookbooks. Cookbooks are meant to be used again and again, making the kindle format difficult for me. It takes a special cookbook for me to make the effort. This is one I'll make it for. The recipes are good traditional Thanksgiving fare, and that's exactly what I was looking for. This book earned its five stars.

Our birth mother may allow us to sit on her lap for a couple of years, but Mother Nature patiently bears our weight for our entire lives. She sings us to sleep, feeds us and caresses us. Just as children are obligated to their birth mother, we should all feel an obligation and responsibility towards Mother Nature. If we forget this responsibility, it is equal to forgetting our own self"This book is a wonderful reminder to love, appreciate and connect with nature, I couldn't put it down!

Read this book and rediscover your true connection and dependence upon Nature and her love for you!

Joyful And Beautiful Mother Nature By Yogini “Shouldn’t we express our gratitude to Mother Earth, who patiently provides her lap for us to run, jump and play upon? Shouldn’t we be grateful to the birds who sing for us, the flowers that blossom for us, the trees that provide shade for us and the rivers that flow for us?” It’s time we remember our connection with nature. We are so busy with our lives, we rarely stop to think of the beauty and sustenance that Mother Nature provides for us. These beautiful quotes on nature will perhaps open your eyes and make you notice all the beauty that surrounds us.

There is much we can learn from Stevenson's disturbing account of mistakes, duplicities and blunders that have led directly to the rise of ISIS and the catastrophic events that now engulf the Middle East.' - From the Foreword by Patrick J. Kennedy Struan Stevenson served as a Conservative MEP for Scotland from 1999 to 2014. During those years he became an active supporter of the People's Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI-MeK), despite the fact that they were at the time listed as a terrorist organisation in the UK, the European Union and the United States. The PMOI, the only effective democratic opposition to the brutal regime of Iran, have been savagely hunted and persecuted by the Mullahs both within Iran and wherever they have sought refuge, in particular Iraq. Working with them in their campaign for regime change in Iran, Struan has fought tirelessly, both in the European Parliament and elsewhere, to expose the fallacy of the West's appeasement policy towards the Iranian theocracy. Tehran spent a great deal of time and resources aimed at keeping the PMOI on international terrorist blacklists through the manipulation of political leaders in Iraq and elsewhere and a black propaganda campaign, which Struan decided actively to expose. In 2009 he was elected President of the European Parliament's Delegation for Relations with Iraq and used that position to intensify his attacks on Tehran's meddling in Iraq, while giving a voice to its beleaguered people. Self-Sacrifice: Life with the Iranian Mojahedin is an account of those years, and of the extraordinary struggle and huge personal self-sacrifice of the members of this movement.

A very well-written and detailed humanitarian-political story for anyone who is interested to learn the realities behind the complex situation of the Middle-East with the rise of ISIS/Daesh as well as the democratic alternative presented by progressive muslims and great sacrifices made by the Iranian Mojahedin a.k.a. PMOI/MEK

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Self-Sacrifice for a Noble Cause By A Professor Self-Sacrifice is part documentary and part a brief study of the Iranian Mojahedin (also known as the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran or PMOI, or Mojahedin-e Khalq Iran or MEK). As the title implies, it is a story of the unconditional self-sacrifice of the PMOI members for the liberation of their country from the clutches of the ruling religious fascism. The author, MP Straun Stevenson, provides an extraordinary account of the lives of a number of the PMOI members. Drawn from more than 15 years of observations, involvement with, as well as extensive interviews with a few but very diverse members of the PMOI at various locations (some in Camp Liberty in Iraq, some in a refugee camp in Tirana, Albania, and others who are in exile elsewhere in Europe), the stories, however painful and heartbreaking, paint a very brave and courageous image of these individuals and their hopes and inspirations for a free and democratic Iran. The stories are very vivid and crisp, some with excruciating details. The book is extraordinary for several reasons. First, it provides reasonably detailed but untold accounts of the horrendous atrocities of the evil Iranian regime as experienced by the formerly imprisoned and tortured political prisoners who had spent years in the Iranian regime dungeons. These include painful experiences of medieval torture, rape, and witnessing the execution of very young and teenage students. Through these stories, one can appreciate and better understand the PMOI's dedication and its willingness to pay the ultimate price for the freedom of its country. We hear from individuals e.g., Mohammad Shafaei, whose entire family (except one sister) including father, mother, two brothers, and a sister and her husband were tortured to death by the savage Iranian Revolutionary Guards. Still others provide an even more tragic account of their lives and what led them to join the PMOI as the only plausible and viable mean for bringing about change in Iran.Second, it is about the PMOI and its determination to free Iran, and I must add, against all odds. A truly independent organization, as observed by many, the PMOI only depends on the absolutely heroic and self-sacrifice efforts of its leadership, its members, and its many dedicated followers, to fight a cruel regime characterized as the most active state sponsor of international terrorism. The author briefly surveys the different fronts where the PMOI has fought the Iranian regime, including the PMOI's remarkable and continuing efforts in revealing the Iranian regime's secret nuclear weapon projects.Third, the book indirectly provides a more defensible direction for the policy makers to better evaluate alternatives for an effective Iran regime change policy. There is no doubt that as long as the ruthless religious fascism continues its unwanted rule in Iran, there will be no prospects for peace, freedom or democracy there and the regional conflicts (e.g., in Syria, in Iraq, and in Yemen) will only deepen and escalate. The Iranian regime must go in order to achieve a level of stability in the middle east. And the Mojahedin, with their remarkable organisation, with the courageous membership who are willing to sacrifice all they have for a free Iran, and their large and impressive support base inside and outside Iran, represent the best alternative. As such, this book is a really a must-read book for government officials, congressional members, policy-makers and their staff, and political science students interested in Iran and the middle east studies.

Dr. Joel Paris's Overdiagnosis in Psychiatry takes a much-needed look at the dangerous epidemic of unnecessary or incorrect treatments. The last 30 years of psychiatry have seen the development of a system of classification aimed at establishing greater scientific credibility. Unfortunately, the current categories are based entirely on signs and symptoms rather than on causes, which remain unknown. This has inevitably made diagnosis imprecise and uncertain. The result is that well-meaning professionals can have problems separating psychopathology from normality, can be unduly influenced by diagnostic fads, and can ultimately wind up prescribing treatments that do more harm than good. Paris examines prominent examples of overused diagnoses including major depressive disorder, ADHD, bipolar-II disorder, autism spectrum disorders, and PTSD.

Overdiagnosis in Psychiatry: How Modern Psychiatry Lost Its Way While Creating a Diagnosis for Almost All of Life's Misfortunes, by Joel Paris

Review "Dr. Paris is a psychiatrist who knows his onions and so can make you weep. He weeps at the failure to recognize strengths in people rather than weaknesses, and after reading his book we should all gain from one of its key sentences 'it would probably be better to define mental health, not as happiness, but as resilience in the face of adversity'." - Peter Tyrer, Professor of Community Psychiatry, Centre for Mental Health, Imperial College, London

"Most discussions of diagnosis focus on problems with missed diagnoses or misdiagnosis. Dr. Paris does the field a great favor by focusing on the problem of overdiagnosis, and showing how it is as great a problem as underdiagnosis." - Mark Zimmerman, Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Brown Medical School, Providence, RI

"Too much medicine can be bad for your health- over-diagnosis and over-treatment are now serious public health problems. Dr Paris has provided an important pebble in the David vs Goliath battle to contain the medical-industrial complex." - Allen Frances, Professor Emeritus and former Chair Duke University and author of Saving Normal

"Dr. Joel Paris has written a wonderfully provocative book that will irritate some readers and delight others. With opinions based on his many years working in the trenches, Dr. Paris points out the problems of overdiagnosis, misdiagnose, and diagnostic epidemics that have been fueled in part by overenthusiasm for the DSM. Written in an accessible style, this book is bound to become a classic in the field." - Donald W. Black, MD, Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, Iowa City, IA

"Dr. Joel Paris's book is the one book you must read to understand why psychiatry, in the midst of the most optimistic period in its history, is stumbling badly due to its disregard of the most basic medical distinction of all, the distinction between normality and pathology." - Jerome C. Wakefield, PhD, DSW, Professor of Social Work, and Professor of Psychiatry (Professor of the Conceptual Foundations of Psychiatry), New York University, New York, NY

"I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in psychiatry and, in particular, concerned about the pathologizing of normality. " -- Brett C. Plyler, M.D., Doody's

About the Author Joel Paris was born in New York City, but has spent most of his life in Canada. Dr. Paris' research interest is in borderline personality disorder. Dr. Paris has 193 peer-reviewed articles, and is the author of 17 books and 40 book chapters. Dr. Paris is an educator who has has won awards for his teaching.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. PLEASE READ THIS BOOK NOW! Mandatory reading for every modern practicing psychiatrist. By K. Garcia Dear Joel,I cannot thank you enough for writing this book. As a psychiatrist, the current system makes performing thoughtful, conscientious psychiatry nearly impossible. Your well-researched volume describes the dysfunctional situation quite well! The art of interacting with the patient and appreciating not just the verbal content, but the body language, what the patient attends to, how they interpret the interviewers open ended questions, their choice of words, and also what is not said.... has been lost. Instead, we are experiencing the misguided equivalent of transforming psychiatry into something akin to the Wong-Baker FACES® Pain Rating Scale: the overly happy face gets the mood stabilizer, the sad face gets the antidepressant, the odd face gets the antipsychotic, and the angry face gets the cocktail in a syringe. Some nuances of meaning for your consideration: Like another book from 2007 titled "Doing Psychiatry Wrong" by Rene Muller, the idea that the problem relates to 'biological psychiatry' should be clarified to appreciate that talk therapy is a biological intervention! Competent talk therapy for the appropriate patient is the most circuit-specific intervention within our psychotherapeutic armamentarium. The central issue is the faulty model of what it means to be human.I would say that overdiagnosis is not the issue. A accurate assessment with a reasonable response of clarity and support is what is required. Perhaps the root of stigma is not overdiagnosis, but that someone imagines there is really a line between sickness and health. Whether one is talking about the heart, lungs, kidneys, quadraceps...function is best described as part of a spectrum. If someone is building a bridge, one must engineer the supports to handle the load. The idea here is that supports which are too robust or insufficient would be problematic. LIkewise, thinking of a deaf person as disordered would get you quite a defensive response from that community. It is best to match the individual capacity to withstand stress to the tasks they can handle, while certainly intervening to prevent the declination of capacity while optimizing function where we can. A mental health assessment should be part of a yearly screening if psychiatry could accept nature taking it's course. All human beings fall on a spectrum with regards to their adaptive capacity and, in times of excessive stress, their baseline adaptive capacity may falter. If someone is sitting in front of a psychiatrist, they are either troubled about something or someone is troubled about them. There is likely an issue to be recognized and appropriately addressed, even if that requires listening and simple reassurance. It may not be a personality disorder, but perhaps personality disorder features. It may not be a morbid depression, but something may be triggering some anxiety and despondence. As with any complex system, the less one mettles with the systems build in balancing mechanisms the better. Sometimes a sympathetic and encouraging soul is all it takes to promote the individual's cognitive integration processes. The only thing wrong with that soul being a psychiatrist is if that psychiatrist feels compelled to relieve their own stress by insisting on a medications intervention when none is require just because they lack the time to care in the way that really matters. Something ingested effecting a person's brain chemistry which not necessary, it is an unnecessary risk. I see nothing wrong with labels or descriptors which accurately portray an individual's condition, even if they reflect something benign. It is not the label that is the problem as long as it derives from a well grounded model of human experience and triggers an appropriate intervention.Society is unrealistic in its expectations of the psychiatrist. It holds the psychiatrist accountable for not being able to predict the future or read minds, such as when someone attempts suicide when it is impossible to predict with certainty what will happen after the individual leaves that office. Yet, the psychiatrist must respect the individuals autonomy or self-determination, even when many patients are indulging in risky behavior. There is a bind here as many of our patients are not forthcoming, many misunderstand or distort their reports, while many others are misleading. The quality of the relationship, understanding of human nature, generally, and, more specifically, what motivates the individual specifically is our leverage. Yet, as long as a concrete token of our intervening, such as prescribing a pill, is the main legitimate indication of our conscientiousness, unnecessary medications will be prescribed.I was surprised at your arguments within the personality disorders chapter not discussing what I consider the central features which distinguish any affective disorder with a personality disorder; particularly bipolar disorder compared to borderline personality disorder. The basis of distinction, in my clinical experience, has to do with (1) the dynamic quality of the interaction between mood and the environment and, (2) the appreciation of the patient's worldview or source of meaning. When one appreciates the patient's worldview, one understands what motivates and disappoints them. This allows one to recognize the individual's triggers and to appreciate the relationship between environmental events and how it moderates their moods characteristically at a shorter time-course than if the individual were suffering from a primary mood issue. On the unit, when the borderline patients do not get their way, they act out. Often when they are enticed by someone of the opposite sex or suddenly wish to be discharged, their depressive symptoms resolve. Mood disorders are governed more by neuromodulatory processes that are not as responsive to the environment. Personality disorders represent limited strategies based on an impoverished model of how the world works. More adaptive Individuals are capable, at various times as the situation requires, of acting avoidant, antisocial, narcissistic, and the full gamut of strategies. (Strategy here not simply being some intellectual, declarative understanding, but their responsiveness to stressors derived from both conscious and unconscious processes.)Having worked in two major NYC Health & Hospital institutions the shocking trend is currently to label the majority of patients from the ER as schizoaffective disorder and then prescribe a combination of Risperdal and Depakote or their equivalent. Certainly this mindless indiscriminant treatment is expeditious and dangerous. It actually fosters a co-dependence between the institution and the patients, many of which suffer from some combination of personality disorder, some secondary affective disorder with comorbid substance use. The co-dependence results from the patients never having their true problem identified or resolved, while the institution believes it is acting as a benevolent caregiver for a chronically ill patient who could not be better helped! It is delusional, but a delusion that serves both entities as both parties essentially agree not to work towards change and the band plays on. Physicians have so much mandatory paperwork to respond to every quality assurance initiative that they cannot see the patient who is right in front of them. If the patient says they are hallucinating, then the psychiatrists writes down the patient is hallucinating. If the patient says they are paranoid, the psychiatrist writes down the patient is paranoid. It does not matter that the patient is sitting with his chair leaning backwards and speaking in a relaxed manner, describing all the details of their presentation motivated to convince the doctor of their psychosis (when there is none). So although you make an argument for standardization, I would counter that what is really needed is mastery. An expert can get to the answer in ways that depend on intuition. Certainly that intuition must be subsequently supported by additional data from observations and interactions. But I believe a relaxed, conversational style of interview which undermines the patient's performance and results in greater candor, while still focusing on essentials allows for collecting the highest quality data. Just consider how you or anyone would feel asked a bunch of standardized questions as opposed to having an open discussion about life with someone who appears concerned and genuinely interested with you as a person. In summary, I believe that the problem lies with the model being applied to the assessment and management of the human condition. I am in complete agreement with many of your points and believe you have done an outstanding job of documenting this disturbing trend. There are many contributing factors which are reinforcing these practices: psychiatrists lacking the training to perform competent interviews or to perform psychodynamic psychotherapy, the insistence on completeness without quality or understanding motivated excessively by medicolegal ends, the definition of treatment being the prescription of a pill or the quick fix, the lack of time available to care for patients secondary to a reduction of funding for psychiatry in general, the general depersonalization of medicine under misguided belief that the relationship does not matter, the misunderstanding of free will that leads to individuals diagnosed with a personality disorder to interpret this as saying that all their poor choices must be their fault, the system of secondary gain for certain diagnostic categories along with the standardized predictable DSM questions which allow certain patients to tailor their responses towards certain conclusions, and several more concerns.I'm hoping books like yours have an impact, but typically change is motivated by significant positive reinforcement (i.e. profit) or significant negative reinforcement (i.e. malpractice, loss of licensure). Currently, both of these are working strenuously against your books argument despite your moral and intellectual high ground.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Disturbing yet hilarious By tehuti_88 I'm not sure what this e-book is doing in the LGBT category (where I found it); my only guess is because of some of the rather kinky-sounding dishes offered within. There is "lost in translation," and then there is...whatever is going on with these menu items. One really has to wonder how translations can go so very wrong, in ways that are rather disturbing yet also rather hilarious. The book is quite short (my only complaint about it, and I imagine this is only because it must take quite a while, and a lot of browsing of menus, to come up with the selections offered), so I can't sit here and give numerous examples of what to expect inside without giving the entire thing away; plus I'm afraid Amazon might censor my review! But seriously, who could resist the grilled deep sea squiggles, or how about some soup with homemade dread? Homemade dread! Mmm tasty!
