THE DECISION TO LOSE WEIGHT You stand in front of the mirror and understand that the person on the outside doesn't reflect who you are on the inside. You've made the decision that the weight has to come off. Now what do you do? The decision to lose weight isn't an easy one. Perhaps something has happened that has put the fear of God in you and made the health risks of being overweight all too real. Maybe your doctor has warned you of a specific health risk. Maybe someone made an unkind comment about your appearance, one they didn't think you overheard or didn't care if you did (yes, people can be intentionally cruel to others). Perhaps a friend was only trying to help when they expressed concern that you are eating yourself into an early grave. Whatever the reason, this time you are committed to taking this whole thing seriously. It was about a week or two before I started my diet plan that I began thinking about getting on a plan and really doing it. It was one of those moments when I really started to think that I may be ready to start yet another diet. I thought about it for a while, and that's when I knew it was for real this time. I've been on too many diets in my lifetime, so I know how it is to go on a diet only to last a few days then fall off. It's a tough choice, especially if your reasons for doing it aren't the right ones. The reasons to lose weight can come from a variety of sources: your health, the way your clothes fit, the way others perceive you, and especially the way you perceive yourself. Whatever the reason is that caused you to make the decision to shed those extra pounds, the one thing you should know is that I am talking to you about a long-term, lifetime commitment. You have to be in it for this long haul. What are the wrong reasons for wanting to lose weight? You wouldn't think any existed, but the fact is that if you are doing this just to prove a point or to please someone else you probably aren't going to keep the weight off if you do lose it. The desire to lose weight must be coupled with a longing to improve your overall health, mentally, physically, and spiritually. It's not just enough, ladies, to want to wear that slinky, sexy dress to your high school reunion and make your former teenage honey regret he ever took up with the head cheerleader. It's not enough, guys, to want to look hunky instead of chunky for the babes on your surfside vacation. You can certainly achieve that goal, unless you think you're going to drop 100 pounds by this weekend. It's just not enough to want only that. You have to look beyond the high school reunion; beyond the vacation. You have to have a plan for what happens when the reunion is behind you and the holiday pictures are clogging down your computer. If you don't, the chances of falling back into your old habits as soon as that short-term goal is reached are pretty high and you will be right back where you started... or worse. One major reason you are here is that your health is at risk, even if you feel fine right now. The fact is that those extra pounds you are hauling around put you at risk for Type-2 diabetes, hypertension and cardiovascular problems, stroke, many kinds of cancer, the chance of fatty liver damage, and the chance of developing or aggravating arthritis. Additionally, being overweight will increase your chances of getting deep vein thrombosis. You are literally eating yourself into an early grave. Life is too short as it is to do all the things we want to do. Why cut more years off when you don't have to do so? Another factor that may have brought you to this point is that you just can't bear to look in the mirror anymore. It depresses you; you want to cry because you can't stand the way you look. Even more heartbreaking is the way you feel. You have no energy; you don't take joy in anything anymore. Your life revolves around food. You are depressed and maybe even lonely because you are locking yourself away from the worl
