Food is gradually becoming a force of change in the health world. As chronic disease rates and health costs rise, populations are increasingly looking towards food as an affordable alternative form of treatment. Functional food, a revolutionary category of food that is taking the world by storm, is popular across the world. However, certain setbacks, such as the lack of a consistent definition across nations and low food education among the public, have held functional food back from high market accessibility. The Functional Food Center (FFC) has been studying functional food for nearly 20 years, and in our third textbook edition, we delve into greater detail regarding topics in functional food science. Specifically, we cover topics such as: the definition of functional food, functional food components, health benefits, chronic diseases, global markets, and sensory evaluation. In addition to these main sections, we discuss sub-topics, such as: modern scientific technology, the relationship between functional food science and medicine, and finally, how food claims are regulated across the world. Accessible to medical doctors, researchers, dietitians, public health professionals, students, and the public, this textbook is meant to enlighten any and all interested in alternative sources of health. Some scientists predict that food will be the future of healthcare and wellness. We agree, and think that functional food is the first glimpse into that future. Using the insight and knowledge of over 3,000 scientific references, we have created a guide to modern functional food science. Edited by Danik M. Martirosyan, PhD, President of Functional Food Center (Dallas, TX, USA), this textbook is the result of a collaboration between 54 scientists, 44 universities, and international medical and food organizations. We would like to extend our warmest gratitude to each and every contributor of this book for having shared their articles with us. Our contributors are experts in their fields and are based in a variety of countries, including: Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, China, Denmark, Russia, India, Hong Kong, Hungaria, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brazil, Poland, Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Thailand, Belarus, the USA and more. Our diversity of backgrounds adds richness to this book and to all of our other publications at the FFC. Danik M. Martirosyan, PhD, President, Functional Food Institute, Dallas, TX, USA

Excerpt from Miss. Beecher's Domestic Receipt-Book: Designed as a Supplement to Her Treatise on Domestic EconomyThe following objects are aimed at in this work:First, to furnish an original collection of receipts, which shall embrace a great variety of simple and well-cooked dishes, designed for every-day comfort and enjoyment.Second, to include in the collection only such receipts as have been tested by superior housekeepers, and warranted to be the best. It is not a book made up in any department by copying from other books, but entirely from the experience of the best practical housekeepers.Third, to express every receipt in language which is short, simple, and perspicuous, and yet to give all directions so minutely as that the book can be kept in the kitchen, and be used by any domestic who can read, as a guide in every one of her employments in the kitchen.Fourth, to furnish such directions in regard to small dinner-parties and evening company as will enable any young housekeeper to perform her part, on such occasions, with ease, comfort, and success.Fifth, to present a good supply of the rich and elegant dishes demanded at entertainments, and yet to set forth a large variety of what is both healthful and good, in connexion with warnings and suggestions which it is hoped may avail to promote a more healthful fashion in regard both to entertainments and to daily table supplies. No book of this kind will sell without receipts for the rich articles which custom requires, and in furnishing them, the writer has aimed to follow the example of Providence, which scatters profusely both good and ill, and combines therewith the caution alike of experience, revelation, and conscience, "choose ye that which is good, that ye and your seed may live."About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Vintage cocktail recipes for the modern bartending enthusiast!

Compiled by the mysterious and mightily talented Frank Meier, who could be found behind the bar at the Paris Ritz in his trademark white jacket from 1921 to 1947, The Artistry of Mixing Drinks is a one-of-a-kind drink book. Nearly as famous for his sharp wit as he was for his delicious and well-balanced cocktails, Meier honed his skills working for Harry Craddock in New York before moving to the Paris Ritz where he mixed drinks for such icons as Franklin Roosevelt, Noël Coward, Hemingway, and Cole Porter.

Filled with decades of hard-earned mixological wisdom, The Artistry of Mixing Drinks reflects the seriousness with which Frank Meier executed his craft. It contains over 300 cocktail and mixed drink recipes, many of which were concocted by the author himself, as well as a chapter with sandwich recipes (and drink pairings), a chapter on wines and how to serve them, useful measurement conversion charts, and a chapter on how to properly clean and maintain bar supplies.

In Meier's own words, to be a bartender is to be "a chemist, a physiologist, and a psychologist" all at once. To this end, he addresses several topics of interest to any respectable, globe-trotting polymath. These areas include prescriptions for illnesses, first aid instructions in case of drowning, sunstroke, poisonous snake bites, and other calamities; wind pressure charts; basic physics and geometry formulas; and a brief history of horse racing.

A truly comprehensive guide for the sophisticated drinker, this high-quality reprint of The Artistry of Mixing Drinks is a refreshing dose of Golden-age wisdom for the modern cocktail lover.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Summary of Washington and Adams Presidencies By Scrapple8 ‘Washington and his Colleagues: A Chronicle of the Rise and Fall of Federalism’ by Henry Jones Ford is the 14th volume of the Chronicles of America Series edited by Allen Johnson. This short (138 pages) text explains the Washington and Adams Administrations of the Early American Republic. The first two chapters focus on the etiquette of the office of the president, his deportment, and some of his early decisions to set the tone of the office. One early debate in Congress resolved around the responsibility of dismissing cabinet officers. Madison drafted a Bill of Rights – here, considered an inducement to convince Rhode Island and North Carolina to join the Union. The Bill of Rights owes its genesis just as much to the race for a Congressional seat in Virginia between James Madison and James Monroe. Madison’s pledge for a Bill of Rights during that race made the implementation of one a matter of personal honor.Chapters 3-7 each involve one topic of particular relevance to the Washington Administration:• Hamilton’s plan for Public Credit• Frontier and Indian affairs• Piracy of the Barbary States• The French Revolution in America, including Citizen Genet• The Jay Treaty with EnglandSmall issues are also embedded within each chapter. For example, Chapter IV is primarily about affairs on the frontier, but there is a section on Washington’s Northern and Southern state tours to promote national unity. Pinckney’s treaty with Spain is fit into Chapter 6, which is a chapter primarily about American affairs with France, including the Genet affair.Differences in policy emerged as the early republic tried to establish itself in America. The people with those differences emerged into political parties, Federalists and Republicans. Chapter 8 contains a discussion of the emergence of two parties. Ironically, the book does not mention the famous fight in Congress between Roger Griswold of CT and Matthew Lyon of VT that has been memorialized in a widely-circulated political cartoon. Nor does the chronicle draw special attention to the political newspapers that led the public debate between political parties. Philip Freneau and the National Gazette are mentioned, but John Fenno’s Gazette of the U.S. was an important voice for the Federalists.Chapter 9 crams the entire Adams Administration into one chapter of 18 pages, but the main events of the four years are captured: the XYZ Affair, the quasi war, the Alien and Sedition Acts and the Virginia and Kentucky Resolutions. The Sedition Act did not help the Federalists much, but the social implications of recruiting American aristocrats and creditors to the cause of Federalist to the exclusion of the burgeoning commercial class and Southern planters, who still harbored aristocratic pretensions but were still debtors, were as much a cause of the Jefferson Revolution of 1800 as any political event during the reign of Adams. This Chronicle leans toward the Federalists in its tenor, being critical of the Republican leader Thomas Jefferson and gushing with praise for the Federalist Alexander Hamilton. This observation is not meant to imply that you should or should not read the chronicle for its political tendencies. After all, these comments are few and far between. This chronicle focuses on telling the history of the era, not making a commentary about it.This Chronicle may not be the best vehicle to use in order to learn the material. My personal preference is to use the first seven chapters of Empire of Liberty by Gordon Wood. However, this chronicle can be helpful in remembering the major names, dates, and events of the Era of Federalism. Reading Wood’s book once was a daunting task, but this chronicle is short enough to read and re-read.This Chronicle is available for free on Project Gutenberg. In the e-book, the volume has an awkwardly constructed Table of Contents. You may also be confused by the following sentence on page 121: ‘This feature of McHenry's recommendations could not be curried out Pickering soon informed Hamilton that the old animosities were still so active "in some breasts" that the plan of cooperation was impracticable.’ This run-on sentence is actually two sentences – there should be a period after out. I also believe the author meant to say that the recommendations could not be carried out.

The 1918 Yale UP edition, which may be seen online, is 266 pp. Nonetheless, this is an admirably concise history of the US from 1789 to 1800.The author's style is crisp and reads well today. It is only dated in a certain confidence about Hamilton's rightness which even the most ardent Hamiltonian of our day would tone down for public consumption. Here is an example:... No one has ever contended that Hamilton was prompted by an economic motive in giving up his law practice to accept public office. He did so against the remonstrances of his friends, whose predictions that what he would get out of it for himself would be calumny, persecution, and loss of fortune, were all fully verified; but he possessed a nature which found its happiness in bringing high ideals to grand fulfillment, and in applying his powers to that object he let everything else go. Hamilton's career is one of the greatest of those facts that baffle attempts to reduce history to an exhibition of the play of economic forces.Again, although the book is concise, I don't think it misses much. I particularly liked re-encountering Washington's epic rant to his cabinet:Knox exhibited a print entitled the funeral of George W——n, in which the President was placed on a guillotine. "The President was much inflamed; got into one of those passions when he cannot command himself; ran much on the personal abuse which had been bestowed upon him; defied any man on earth to produce one single act of his since he had been in the Government which was not done from the purest motives; that he had never repented but once the having slipped the moment of resigning his office, and that was every moment since; that by God he had rather be in his grave than in his present situation; that he had rather be on his farm than to be made emperor of the world; and that they were charging him with wanting to be king; that that rascal Freneau sent him three of his papers every day, as if he thought he would become the distributor of his papers; that he could see in this nothing but an impudent design to insult him." [To which Ford appends helpfully:] Freneau was one of Jefferson's subordinates in the State Department, combining with his duties there the editorship of a newspaper engaged in spreading the calumny that the Administration was leaning toward monarchy through the influence of Hamilton and his friends, who despised republicanism, hated France, and loved England.I want to use one more quote to illustrate Ford's style, which is head and shoulders above the genteel schoolmarmish style which makes so many old history books unreadable today. Note how one understated fact suddenly opens a panorama into the next century:The usual address to Congress was delivered by Washington on December 7, 1796, shortly after the opening of the second session of the Fourth Congress. The occasion was connected in the public mind with his recent valedictory, and Congress was ready to vote a reply of particularly cordial tenor. Giles stood to his guns to the last, speaking and voting against complimentary resolutions. "He hoped gentlemen would compliment the President privately, as individuals; at the same time, he hoped such adulation would never pervade the House." He held that "the Administration has been neither wise nor firm," and he acknowledged that he was "one of those who do not think so much of the President as some others do." On this issue Madison forsook him, and Giles was voted down, 67 to 12. Among the eleven who stood by Giles was a new member who made his first appearance that session—Andrew Jackson of Tennessee.I have decided to try some other books in the series:Jefferson and His Colleagues; a chronicle of the Virginia dynastyThe Reign of Andrew Jackson A Chronicle of the Frontier in PoliticsCan they possibly be as good?

The realm of emotion is one of those areas where Buddhism and Western psychology are often thought to be at odds: Are emotions to be valued, examined, worked with as signs leading us to deeper self-knowledge? Or are they something to be ignored and avoided as soon as we recognize them?

Rob Preece feels that neither of those extremes is correct. He charts a path through the emotions as they relate to Buddhist practice, showing that though emotions are indeed "skandhas" (elements that make up the illusory self) according to the Buddhist teaching, there is a good deal to be learned from these skandhas, and paying attention to their content contributes not only to psychological health but to deep insight into the nature of reality. He draws on his own experiences with emotions and meditation, through his training in both Tibetan Buddhism and psychotherapy, to show how working with emotions can be a complement to meditation practice.

Integrating Ancient Buddhism into Modern Psychology By Book Drawn As Buddhism develops in the west, many believe wider acceptance will be through a connection with modern western psychology. This book makes and elaborates on the case for that connection. The author, Rob Preece is a western psychotherapist who also practices Buddhism. He looks at feelings through the eyes of Jung and Freud and through Tibetan Buddhist. Judging from his writing, his practice remains primarily centered in western practices, but he supplements it with Buddhist teachings and meditations such as the mindfulness of breathing, Mahamudra, and Tonglen. This book illustrates the connection by relating many of the author’s personal experiences as a mental health care provider. Many of the principles of Buddhism are smoothly integrated into this skillfully written book. For those seeking a basic foundation in the use of Buddhism with western psychology this book will prove a very readable introduction and jumping off point. For the same readers it will likely prove itself a gateway to further studies.

Welcome to the Realm of Mind CONTROL!

Would you like to control someone’s thoughts? Have you ever wondered why people join and stay in cults? Do you believe that you can never be a victim of mind control? Are you still struggling to understand the concept of mind control?

If you can say ‘yes’ to any one of these questions, then "Mind Control: Persuasion, Manipulation and Human Psychology - Explained" the book for you. Mind control is defined as the successful control of the thoughts and actions of another without his or her consent. In this book, you will learn several techniques to help you master the art of mind control. You will also learn how to identify the methods that people use to bring others under their control so that they can take advantage of them in some way. The book begins by giving you a history of mind control so that it can be better understood day. This rich history goes back to the early 1400’s and details the origin of attempting to control human behavior using various methods. From violent exorcisms to control without any physical contact, mind control has been used as a means of control and altering behavior for centuries. The next aspect that follows is a real understanding of mind control, including definitions and scenarios. The difference between positive mind control and negative mind controlled are clearly elaborated and explained. This is important to understand as most mind control techniques that are used to do veer towards the negative, perhaps explaining why there is a mystery and a touch of fear association with mind control. This book then explains how people can manipulate through mind control, by altering their beliefs and creating confusion. In addition, they also use control to suppress personalities and abuse authority. Manipulation is such an important part of mind control. It entails looking at how someone can pull the wool over your eyes, so that you see what does not exist, and change your rational thinking to irrational behavior. Once you are able to identify the subtle things that are done under mind control to be successful, you will be able to avoid properly being a pawn for someone to misuse. Some interesting points of note in this book include how the government has used mind control to manage the people and the military, as well as how mind control works in a cult setting. These help one to understand how they can be under mind control as part of the masses. By the time you have completed this book, you will be able to comfortably explain what mind control is, discuss its applications and discern some ways to identify it so as to avoid being placed under mind control. You will also be able to practice some mind control techniques that promote positive mind control so that you can use this type of control for something useful, to transform and improve your life as it is. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. interesting! By bunnygirl I find psychology very interesting. This book goes into detail just how mind control works. I didn't realize how many different ways there was in controlling the mind, some of it experimental. Mind control isn't necessarily an evil thing even though many people have used it for bad things. Even a simple advertisement on television utilizes it, making us want to buy their product. Neilsen's book also includes the history of mind control, and even goes through some of the popular myths about it. I learned a lot from reading this book!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. interesting By RebeccaSue There's a lot of interesting information about mind control in here that I did not know. Lots of facts about how to control and deceive others too which I found odd and distasteful. I suppose there are some people who would want to learn to control and manipulate but I dont view this as a positive thing. The information and book was well-written, no moral center.

Info is good but riddled with typos By Amazon Customer This information is really useful to help you avoid getting scammed into a cult or recognizing when someone you love is slipping into the control of one. If typos are corrected would give a higher rating.

I own a cake pop business and have read a lot of cake pop books but this is the best by far! They don't miss one detail. One of the most informative cake pop books I've read.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Cake pops made easy! By Ann Kelly I absolutely love this book. It makes cake-popping for new "poppers" incredibly easy. These designs are perfect for a day of baking with your child, and they will love creating and decorating the adorable designs! There is a whole section devoted to techniques and what to do if you mess up. The recipes are amazing, fresh, and tasty. The pops themselves are perfect for any occasion, big or small. The Art of Cake Pops artfully and tastefully walks us through step-by-step to make the world's most amazing, tiny, delectable treats. The designs are superb. They're adorable and simple. The author gives amazing detail. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking to try cake pops. Even if you're afraid you'll make mistakes, this book has a failsafe option for it!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Cute ideas, but could use more instructional pics By Tara A. LeGates Being a pastry chef myself I bought the book mainly for ideas/inspiration, so in that respect it's a great book and I will have no problem using the ideas in the book as a jumping off point for my own designs (I already use my own recipes, so I can't really comment on that portion of the book).Looking at this book from the perspective of a beginner cake-popper, more step-by-step instructional pics might be called for. The written instructions are very thorough, but for many who are just learning, step-by-step picture tutorials are where it's at. This is a good book, but there are many others just as good that have more thorough illustrations, those would be a better choice for the beginning decorator. If you are an experienced decorator looking for inspiration, and can easily follow written over visual directions, then this could be a great book for you.

As the demands of modern life begin to affect the availability of convenient GP appointments, there is a need to move away from some of the rigid and traditional opening hours of Primary Care Surgeries. The Out Of Hours service has therefore become a significant player in the quest to improve patents' access to primary care services. The author outlines the various ways of achieving patient contact, discusses the systems already in place for dealing with patient care outside the normal working hours of Primary Care Doctors and challenges all clinicians to work towards the promotion of patient safety. Where possible, he has deliberately avoided medical jargon so that the layperson can have direct access to the information.

Pot Luck: Why Marijuana is Today’s Medicine is an exploration of the benefits of Marijuana for the treatment of a variety of illnesses and conditions. It features the stories of real (named) American patients and doctors. It tells of their struggle and success in an often, difficult political, legal, and cultural setting. As America slow-marches inevitably toward legalization, it Is patients like these who are driving the progress. Yet, marijuana remains illegal in half of our states, denying patients with cancer, Parkinson’s, PTSD, seizures, anxiety, and most important, pain relief. The authors, Richard W. Lewis and Mikhail J. Artamonov, M.D. write in a spirited, accessible, and optimistic manner, much like the patients they describe.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Highly recommend for all By Catherine Chao This book is more similar to "Why Hire Jennifer?" than you would think at first glance; Lewis' branding perspective on atypical cases carries on in his thorough yet straightforward analysis of the bad rap that marijuana has developed over the years. As someone who started reading knowing little about the debate of the legalization of marijuana (medical or recreational), this book is best described as friendly to all who are curious about the subject and want to learn about it swiftly and painlessly. The information is conveyed in a non-intimidating way and Lewis drives his points with only necessary details - you will find just enough information to gain a solid foundation of marijuana and its potential for medical purposes. Lewis provides breaks between his own narration, to provide stories of people who have already discovered the healing abilities of marijuana and now have a personal stake in their support for legalization, whether it be for a quadriplegic son or for a husband with a "Parkinson's 'mask' he's been assigned to wear." He goes into the science, describing types of strains and endocannabinoids, as well as the history of how powerful figures came to influence marijuana's negative image. We get the full picture of what marijuana actually is and what it is wrongly perceived to be.Lewis introduces to readers a new definition of "pot luck" that has taken hold. It is not just a table of food or a meal with your friends, but rather it is about how people have struck gold in an unconventional manner through marijuana. It is about how patients, as Lewis wrote "who are just looking for a normal day," found it possible to achieve.

It is quite emblematic of Lewis tone: casual, but succinctly informative. He is the same mastermind behind the Absolut Vodka advertising campaign, which he also published a book about if you're interested. On to the review.I barely knew anything about marijuana besides that there was an ongoing debate about its legalization. After reading the book, I now have a basic understanding of everything from marijuana's history to its multiple strains and uses.I was really able to see how "a branding guy" and a physiatrist came together to create this book - there was ample scientific information as well as an exploration and explanation into why marijuana has become an eyebrow-raising means of medical treatment. The personal stories incorporated every now and not only struck chords of sympathy, they begged the reader to continue onwards. The order was at times slightly confusing to me, but it only encouraged me to keep reading so that I could piece things together.I particularly liked the example of Robby and how February 2015 marked him a year free of seizures thanks to the aid of medical marijuana. Perhaps because he is a child the story was more endearing, but it also exemplified how current and pressing the issues are. The "What's Next?" bit at the end was also an organized, effective culmination of the ideas expressed in the books and the steps that must be taken.I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about medical marijuana. Even if you know nothing about it, and maybe especially if you know nothing about it, this book is a great start. It's packed with information that's relevant to the debates going on today.

On the afternoon of 8 April 1802, in the remote southern ocean, two explorers had a remarkable chance encounter. Englishman Matthew Flinders and Frenchman Nicolas Baudin had been sent by their governments on the same quest: to explore the uncharted coast of the great south land and find out whether the west and east coasts, four thousand kilometres apart, were part of the same island. And so began the race to compile the definitive map of Australia. These men's journeys were the culmination of two hundred years of exploration of the region by the Dutch - most famously Abel Tasman - the Portuguese, the Spanish and by Englishmen such as the colourful pirate William Dampier and, of course, James Cook. The three-year voyages of Baudin and Flinders would see them endure terrible hardships in the spirit of discovery. They suffered scurvy and heat exhaustion, and Flinders was shipwrecked and imprisoned - always knowing he was competing with the French to produce the first map of this mysterious continent. Written from diaries and other first-hand accounts, this is the thrilling story of men whose drawings recorded countless previously unknown species and turned mythical creatures into real ones, and whose skill and determination enabled Terra Australis Incognita to become Australia.

Excellent story of the European discovery of Australia By Colin Pettit What a wonderful story that delves into the lives of those intrepid souls that set out on the mammoth task to sail and map the coastline of Australia. This was an extraordinarily difficult task and many lives were lost before the new found knowledge was able to be carried back to Europe. Even war between England & France did not prevent the free exchange of knowledge about New Holland between these rivals.I see parallels in this story with contemporary efforts to land humans on the Moon, with a major difference being that the Moon, to date, has not been colonised.Successful Australian coastline navigators had the challenge of disease, shipwreck, and the limits of technology to deal with and those that were able to manage these challenges were rewarded handsomely with grants of land in the new colony or commercial success as an author. This book has deepened my knowledge of the European discovery of Australia and I found the story of Flinders missing some major East Coast rivers on his first journey north of Port Jackson to be particularly poignant. I'm sure he would have been mightily embarrassed once they were found.Another story I found fascinating was the prediction, by experienced sailors, of the existence of Bass Strait due to tidal movements in the area. Once confirmed this provided ships a faster route to Port Jackson.I haven't finished this engaging story as yet (I'm about 40% through) however, I can tell this will be a book I will refer to for the rest of my life. It is fascinating.Congratulations to David Hill, he has thoroughly researched and authored a book which has all the elements of high adventure, scientific discovery and sheer guts. All that was needed to settle the harsh and unforgiving land of Australia.

By Jennifer Cameron-Smith .. two explorers had a chance encounter.'Those two explorers were Frenchman Nicolas Tomas Baudin, on `Le Geographe', and Englishman Matthew Flinders on `Investigator'. Baudin and Flinders had been sent by their respective governments to explore the uncharted coastal areas of Australia. They had also been requested to ascertain whether the west and east coast of Australia were separated by sea, or were part of a single land mass. While the stated focus of this book is on the `race between the English and the French to complete the map of Australia', a number of the early chapters cover the story of the European discovery (by the Dutch, English, French, Portugese and Spanish) of Australia through planned expeditions and accidental journeys. While this information - as well as a chapter on the early British settlement of Australia - provide a useful summary, it is not all directly relevant to `The Great Race'.Nicolas Baudin's was primarily a scientific expedition, and his two ships (Le Geographe and Le Naturaliste) set sail with a scientific team of 23. Despite a number of drawbacks and challenges including the death of Baudin in 1803, the French ultimately published the first complete coastal map of Australia in 1811. Matthew Flinders published his version three years later and, because of the British victory at Waterloo, it is Flinders's achievements many of us think of first.`I call the whole island Australia or Terra Australis.' (Matthew Flinders- 1804)Matthew Flinders was first shipwrecked and later imprisoned on The Isle de France (Mauritius) for over six years. By the time he returned to England, he had not seen his wife for more than nine years. If you are unfamiliar with the story of the European discovery of Australia, this would be a useful introduction. Mr Hill has included an excellent bibliography for those who want to read further. I learned quite a bit about Baudin's expedition from this book, and the account of Matthew Flinders (and Trim the cat) reinforced Flinders's position as one of the 19th century explorers I most admire.Jennifer Cameron-Smith

Fascinating subject but in need of a good editor By marko uk Fascinating subject but in need of a good editor, this is too long, often bewildering and geographically vague or inaccurate, (Weipa is not on the eastern coast of Australia's Cape York peninsula but the western one. Which hardly inspires confidence at the beginning of a book on exploration and mapping.)Places such as Adventure Bay pop up with no real context or reason and are never heard of again. Or are not given their modern names or easier identifiers (such as might be achieved by telling us that "Bay of Inlets" is modern Shoalwater Bay) . Flinders and Bass sail off from Sydney in search of a possible strait (later given Bass's name) between Australia and Tasmania and are suddenly inexplicably we realise in Tasmania (a sentence saying why they didn't just follow the mainland coast round through the strait would doubtless have made much clear.) Some people are described as "taking" a boat when it is important to understand (though it never becomes totally clear) that they are stealing it. Episodes get repeated in a sometimes confusing chronology. There is massive pointless sloppiness. Spencer Gulf is said to be named in 1802 after Princess Diana's "great grandfather" the 2nd Earl Spencer. Some schoolboy spottable mistake here surely, given that Diana's birth was then another 159 years in the future (so yes, her great grandfather turns out to be "only" the 6th Earl, so the 2nd Earl had a lot more "greats" to his name than that). Does this matter? Probably not (so why include her in the first place?) but obvious blunders like this do make you wonder about the rest of the book.Tedious often seemingly endlessly rambling pages are padded (the only word) with the preparations in Europe for voyages and for even less obvious reasons the backgrounds and private lives of all concerned. I have given up a third of the way through. Maybe it gets better, but I've tired of hoping so. Reduce its length, add a few linking and explanatory thoughts and clarify the geography would be my advice. Plus easier to read maps, at least in the Kindle edition. And then you'll have a pretty good book.PS. I later went back to this book after writing the above and things picked up shortly after in the matter of describing the mapping of Australia. I have accordingly increased the star rating from two to three. But the infuriating sloppiness in the book's own cartography persists. There is, for instance, a major episode in which Flinders gets wrecked with two ships. Where? Good basic question. The book scarcely gives a clue. It is clearly off the East Coast of Australia, but where, and at what distance from the shore (since no mention is made of the shore)? The nearest to any precision comes only at the end of this long episode when mention is made of it being on Wreck Reef. But where on earth is that? Nothing here tells us, neither is it, nor any clue as to the wreck's location, shown on the book's maps (which turn out to be somewhat clearer on my laptop than on my Kindle).10 minutes' Googling suggests that it is Porpoise Cay in the Wreck Reefs some 230 nautical miles off the present day town of Gladstone. But there is nothing in the book that tells you this. Nothing. I find it breath-taking, insulting even, that the location is regarded as not worth pinpointing for the benefit of those who have bought a book on the mapping of Australia.
