Since the early 1990s, refugee crises in the Balkans, Central Africa, the Middle East, and West Africa have led to the international spread of civil war. In Central Africa alone, more than three million people have died in wars fueled, at least in part, by internationally supported refugee populations. The recurring pattern of violent refugee crises prompts the following questions: Under what conditions do refugee crises lead to the spread of civil war across borders? How can refugee relief organizations respond when militants use humanitarian assistance as a tool of war? What government actions can prevent or reduce conflict?

To understand the role of refugees in the spread of conflict, Sarah Kenyon Lischer systematically compares violent and nonviolent crises involving Afghan, Bosnian, and Rwandan refugees. Lischer argues against the conventional socioeconomic explanations for refugee-related violence—abysmal living conditions, proximity to the homeland, and the presence of large numbers of bored young men. Lischer instead focuses on the often-ignored political context of the refugee crisis. She suggests that three factors are crucial: the level of the refugees' political cohesion before exile, the ability and willingness of the host state to prevent military activity, and the contribution, by aid agencies and outside parties, of resources that exacerbate conflict.

Lischer's political explanation leads to policy prescriptions that are sure to be controversial: using private security forces in refugee camps or closing certain camps altogether. With no end in sight to the brutal wars that create refugee crises, Dangerous Sanctuaries is vital reading for anyone concerned with how refugee flows affect the dynamics of conflicts around the world.

Review

"A thought-provoking analysis that should stimulate analysts and policymakers to rethink their approaches to the problems associated with providing support to people fleeing conflict. . . . Dangerous Sanctuaries goes beyond the universal, offering an explanation for the cases that seem to fall outside of the predictions of the economic model, and therefore offers us a richer, more nuanced picture of the mechanisms of conflict. This is a valuable contribution to the literatures on civil war and on humanitarian intervention and should assist practitioners and analysts in understanding the complex dynamics of refugee-related violence and humanitarian assistance."―SAIS Review

"This book offers insights into the causes of violence among refugee communities that will certainly shape academic and policy debates for years to come. Academics focusing on refugee studies and policy practitioners in the field will find Dangerous Sanctuaries to be a worthwhile read."―Journal of Peace Research

"In this well-constructed and well-argued book, Sarah Kenyon Lischer challenges naïve and uncritical views of refugees and assistance to refugees. She contends that refugees can spread civil war and that humanitarian air can become a tool of war. . . . Her book is a stimulating, careful, and important contribution to the literature on civil wars, the international dimensions of civil wars, and humanitarianism. The author's framework and analyses will be useful to scholars and practitioners alike."―Political Science Quarterly

"In Dangerous Sanctuaries, Sarah Kenyon Lischer addresses an exceedingly interesting and under-attended topic and does so in a well-informed, balanced, and thoughtful manner."―Michael Teitelbaum, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation

"Sarah Kenyon Lischer takes a vexing problem, violence and refugee crises, and provides a clear, compelling analysis of what can be done about it. Dangerous Sanctuaries is a model of policy relevant research."―Stephen John Stedman, Senior Fellow, Center for International Security and Cooperation, Stanford University

4 of 10 people found the following review helpful. Right on target By Seth J. Frantzman Refugees are violent. This is a fact of history, but it is not always a fact. In the case of the Palestinians, the Hutus in Congo and the Bosnians, the refugees were either already terrorists when they fled or became them once in the camps. Violence was the national anthem of the camps in the COngo, which were made up of people who just got done murdering 800,000 Tutsis, for the Palestiniasn refugeedom and the politics of that led to 50 years of terror that hasn't ended, with Afghans the same led to the Taliban and in Bosnia were it not for soem efforts to disarm them, the same would have happaned. The truth is refugee policy by the UN and the 'international community' has not only failed the refugees, but has also caused untold violence and perhaps contributed to racism, hatred, genocide and fascism and worse. But there have been refugee crises that were solved, peacefully. The German refugees in 1945 fleeing East Prussia didnt become terrorists despite the Nazi background of them, and the Sikh and Hindu refugees from Pakistan in 1948 didnt all become terrorists. Why? Because, as shown here, in some places there were succesful policies to disarm, prevent violence and obsorb refugees. This book dares to show that it is not poverty that makes refugees violent but political and organizational factors. This is true and it has been shown to be true.An important study.Seth J. Frantzman

Every day millions of people struggle with psychological and emotional problems. The Stressed Sex sets out to answer a simple, but crucial, question: are rates of psychological disorder different for men and women? The implications - for individuals and society alike - are far-reaching, and to date, this important issue has been largely ignored in all the debates raging about gender differences. Now Daniel Freeman and Jason Freeman present a ground-breaking combination of epidemiological analysis and evidence-based science to get to the bottom of what's really going on. They discover which mental health problems are more common in men, and which are seen most often in women. And, in a finding that is sure to provoke lively debate, they reveal that, in any given year, women experience higher rates of psychological disorder than men. Why might this be the case? The Stressed Sex explains current scientific thinking on the possible reasons - and considers what might be done to address the imbalance.

The Stressed Sex: Uncovering the Truth About Men, Women, and Mental Health, by Daniel Freeman, Jason Freeman

From Publishers Weekly Oxford University clinical psychologist Daniel Freeman and self-help author Jason Freeman (the two coauthored Anxiety) discuss the differing rates of mental illness and mental disorders between the sexes to explore how gender affects mental health. Citing a range of epidemiological studies conducted globally over the last 20 years, the authors show how genetics and environment work in tandem to create mental disorders. Women, who are much more likely than men to struggle with depression and anxiety, face unique environmental challenges: they are more likely to suffer triggering events like sexual abuse and domestic violence, and many wage lifelong battles against the strictures of traditional gender roles. Men, on the other hand, are more prone to substance-abuse problems, a trend the authors also chalk up to a combination of genetic and situational factors. The Freemans also discuss some less common problems, including eating disorders (which skew mostly female) and autism (an overwhelmingly male condition). The authors acknowledge that there are many flaws in the available research, and they recommend long-term studies that would follow participants over the course of their lives in order to link... social influences to an individual's life history, genetic make-up, biology, and psychological processes. Freeman's book is well-reasoned, thoroughly researched, and worthy of attention. (Aug.)

Wagner Mental illness affects millions of people every day, but it seems to disproportionally affect women. Here the authors set out to discover if that is really true. They examine the most comprehensive surveys of mental health available but find, unfortunately, that the evidence is not at all conclusive. There seem to be some mental disorders that mainly affect males (substance abuses, such as alcoholism and drug use, and autism), and others that mainly affect women (depression and eating disorders), but the authors try to tease from the data support that one sex suffers more overall. Some of the questions surrounding the data are, are certain disorders underreported ( i.e., do men just not report mental illness, due to social stigmas, for example), or are the parameters of some disorders poorly defined, or are there problems with the questions used in the studies? The literature on mental health is surprisingly scant, and even less exists about disparities based on gender.||This book is highly readable and an enjoyable look at the current state of understanding of mental illness in men versus women. It is easily accessible to the lay reader, or anyone with an interest in current trends in mental health research. Although it cannot reach any firm conclusions, it lays out a lot of good questions and at least begins the conversation.I received a copy from the San Francisco Book Review in exchange for an honest review. The opinions are my own.

As a former Chairman of the Admissions Committee of the Regional Campus of the University of Miami School of Medicine and as a longtime member of the Admissions Committee of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine in Boca Raton, Florida, Gary Rose, MD, FACS, recognizes the skills, characteristics, and attitudes expected of a successful med school applicant. Now, he shares his insights in The Medical School Coach.

Make no mistake: this is not a "how to" book. Such books already exist—and, frankly, they do little more than explain what forms to fill out and what courses to take, while providing summaries of medical school statistics. That's not what Rose offers.

Instead, the experienced physician and admissions committee member provides much more valuable information: how to acquire and develop the attributes, characteristics, and frame of consciousness that make the difference between good and great candidates for medical school. Not coincidentally, the qualities that make admissions committees sit up and take notice are also those that characterize the best physicians.

Written for today's upcoming medical school applicants, this fascinating and informative guidebook is short, cogent, and to the point. Students can read any chapter, in or out of sequence, and come away with an invaluable lesson in becoming the best possible medical school candidate—and the best possible human being.

Ebook PDF Online The Hopkins Touch: Harry Hopkins and the Forging of the Alliance to Defeat Hitler, by David L. Roll

The Hopkins Touch offers the first portrait in over two decades of the most powerful man in Roosevelt's administration. In this impressive biography, David Roll shows how Harry Hopkins, an Iowa-born social worker who had been an integral part of the New Deal's implementation, became the linchpin in FDR's--and America's--relationships with Churchill and Stalin, and spoke with an authority second only to the president's. Hopkins could take the political risks his boss could not, and proved crucial to maintaining personal relations among the Big Three. Beloved by some--such as Churchill, who believed that Hopkins "always went to the root of the matter"--and trusted by most--including the paranoid Stalin--there were nevertheless those who resented the influence of "the White House Rasputin." Based on newly available sources, The Hopkins Touch is an absorbing, substantial work that offers a fresh perspective on the World War II era and the Allied leaders, through the life of the man who kept them on point until the war was won.

The Hopkins Touch deserves its place aside Robert Sherwood's Roosevelt and Hopkins and Jon Meacham's Franklin and Winston." --Chris Matthews, host of "Hardball with Chris Matthews" on MSNBC

"It is refreshing to read an account of a time when commitment to the national interest, personal depth in history, vision, loyalty and discretion were the watchwords. Such is the portrait of Harry Hopkins, Franklin Roosevelt's closest confidante and trusted surrogate, drawn by David Roll in this absorbing update of Robert Sherwood's defining work. Drawing on material never before available, Roll revisits Hopkins roots, his intimate relationship with the president, how deeply he was revered by Prime Minister Churchill, and trusted by Joseph Stalin--all in one of the best researched, and well-written biographical works I've ever read. The Hopkins Touch deserves a place in the American political history stacks of every library in America--and also on your night stand."--Robert (Bud) McFarlane, National Security Adviser to Ronald Reagan

"Mr. Roll's use of previously unavailable materials enables him to present a far more comprehensive story. It's a must-read for anyone interested in the period. A truly magisterial biography."-- The Washington Times

"David Roll has captured the essence of one of the most important non-governmental figures in American history. Crisply written, meticulously researched, The Hopkins Touch is a pleasure to read."--Jean Edward Smith, author of FDR, and Eisenhower in War and Peace

"A masterful portrait of one of the most fascinating political figures this country has ever produced. David Roll has vividly captured the infinite complexities and extraordinary influence of FDR aide Harry Hopkins -- part playboy, part reformer-- whose peerless diplomatic efforts in World War II helped cement the Anglo-American alliance and pave the way for the Allies' victory."--Lynne Olson, author of Citizens of London: The Americans Who Stood with Britain in its Finest, Darkest Hour

"That FDR created the world in which we live is a commonplace; as David Roll demonstrates in this highly readable book it was a world created by FDR and Harry Hopkins. The material on Hopkins' maneuvering the U.S. to the North African invasion in the fall of 1942 is by itself imaginative and persuasive. I wish that I'd had Roll's book at my elbow when I was writing about those years."--Warren Kimball, editor of Churchill and Roosevelt, the Complete Correspondence

"If Franklin D. Roosevelt had an alter ego, it was the brilliant and cunning Harry Hopkins. David Roll does a marvelous job of documenting the heroic importance of Hopkins during the Second World War. Hopkins emerges as one of America's indispensable patriots. This is a surefooted and brilliantly researched biography that deserves a wide readership." --Douglas Brinkley, author of Cronkite and The Wilderness Warrior

"Sharply observed, gracefully written, David Roll's portrait of FDR's closest adviser offers us an intimate look at the wise, brave, and humane exercise of power. If only other presidents were blessed with advisers like Harry Hopkins!"--Evan Thomas, author of Ike's Bluff: President Eisenhower's Secret Struggle to Save the World

"In 1940, Britain stood alone; it's survival in doubt. As the US edged closer to war, Harry Hopkins became FDR's confidant on geopolitical issues. In creating the 'grand alliance' his role was crucial. In this splendid, well-researched biography, David Roll has portrayed the decisive actions taken by this 'grey eminence.'" --James Schlesinger, former Secretary of Defense to Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford

"In this important new book, David Roll brings Hopkins out of the shadows and casts a bright and unblinking light on the central--even essential--role that Harry Hopkins played in forging and maintaining the alliance that won the Second World War."--Craig L. Symonds, author of The Battle of Midway

"This delightful book-a genuine page turner-portrays the relationship between FDR and Hopkins in a balanced manner while maintaining the reader's interest with insights into the important players of World War II. Scholars and general readers interested in the era will thoroughly enjoy it. An essential purchase."-- Library Journal

"A compelling portrait of a World War II hero whose victories took place far from the battlefield." -- Kirkus

One reason is that so many things could have turned out differently at so many key points of the struggle. Another is that personalities really mattered. One personality whose story merits this excellent book is Harry Hopkins. Hopkins was a social worker (and founder of the National Association of Social Workers) who rose to prominence during the New Deal, ultimately becoming Franklin Roosevelt's right-hand man, alter-ego, and go-to guy for all the most difficult problems. (Think of Robert Kennedy's many roles during his brother's presidency.)It was natural that Harry Hopkins would end up as the liaison among the big three: FDR, Churchill, and Stalin. All three trusted him. All three valued his "touch": his ability to get to the root of the issue, his ability to defuse tensions, and his ability to handle three world-class egos.Readers of this book will need to have a cursory knowledge of some of the main events of the war:* Britain's desperation after the fall of France in 1940.* The power of isolationism in the U.S. prior to Pearl Harbor.* The scale of the sacrifice of Soviet lives to defeat the German army with little assistance from the Western allies.* The desperation with which the U.S. wanted the Soviets to enter the war against Japan.Important historical questions form a compelling backdrop to the story:* What moral responsibility did the Western allies have to sacrifice soldiers in order to draw off German strength from the Eastern front during the Soviets' darkest hours?* What moral responsibility did the Western allies have for the imposition of Stalinist dictatorships throughout eastern Europe after the war?Of course, Churchill nearly steals the show in any story of the war. He becomes a somewhat pathetic figure as he realizes that Britain will NOT be one of the dominant post-war powers. Nevertheless, the man had a way with words and a genuine affection for Hopkins and Roosevelt. (Incidentally, how is it that he could consume so much alcohol and manage to outlive FDR, Hopkins, and Stalin?)But it is Hopkins' story from beginning to end. I can't help but admire a man who repeatedly jeopardized his health (every overseas trip was life-threatening) for the good of the world. He seems to have been greedy for nothing but the opportunity to use his "touch" in the background to forge and maintain the alliance that defeated Hitler.Other books of interest, especially regarding the end of the war:When Presidents Lie: A History of Official Deception and Its ConsequencesThe Decision to Use the Atomic Bomb

Bristol My American history classes covered the founding of our country in great detail but never quite made it up to the Great Depression and World War II; thus there are gaps in my knowledge that I occasionally try to fill in by reading. "The Hopkins Touch," by David Roll tells the story of a man who was instrumental in shaping history from the Great Depression up until the start of the Cold War; who hobnobbed with world leaders like Winston Churchill and Joseph Stalin, but whose programs also benefited hundreds of ordinary Americans affected by the economic crisis of the times.Born in 1890 in Iowa, Harry Hopkins was the fifth child of a harness maker with a penchant for gambling and a deeply religious mother who believed in service to others. Though a lackadaisical student while in college, Hopkins became inspired by two professors, eventually deciding to go into social work as a result. The skills and experience he acquired proved invaluable during the Great Depression, when he was named head of Temporary Emergency Relief Administration, then later the Works Progress Administration by President Franklin Roosevelt. This marked the beginning of a fourteen year relationship. Plagued by poor health, marital troubles and opposition by conservative critics, Hopkins would nevertheless provide invaluable aid to the President as a diplomat, critic and friend, putting his stamp on history, though usually behind the scenes. Believing that a wartime alliance with Great Britain and Russia that provided economic cooperation with the US would result in victory, he helped shape policies that brought just that about, including implementing a lend-lease program for Great Britain, giving the country access to badly needed weapons to defend themselves against the Germans.Although Roll clearly admires his subject, he does not shy away from discussing the less saintly aspects of Hopkins (he had his wife investigated by the FBI at one point), even portraying Roosevelt as a complex man who often dissembled to achieve his goals. In the acknowledgements, Roll quoted one source he came across while seeking a publisher who said that Hopkins, as a subject, "is not generally recognizable." Overall, "The Hopkins Touch" does an excellent job in portraying Hopkins as a multi-dimensional and influential historial figure and bringing him into sharper focus for those who may not be aware of all he achieved.

In many of those pictures it's possible to see the same gaunt figure somewhere in the background. That figure is Harry Hopkins. In some accounts he's a walk-on, a Roosevelt aide and little else. In others he's a Svengali: an Anglophile, a Red. In reality, Hopkins was perhaps the most effective and noteworthy public servant this country has ever produced. The product of a humble Iowa background, Hopkins became known as an effective social worker. He not only helped to found the WPA, but he became its first director. He was intently focused on the goals he wished to achieve (the 'root of the matter' as Churchill later said), moving aside secondary distractions until those goals were reached. His ability to read other people was legendary, as was his ability to make friends of implacable foes. Hopkins came often to the attention of Roosevelt, eventually becoming his most trusted advisor. He rarely had an official title and was barely paid--if at all--for his work. Given a small bedroom in the White House, Hopkins was rarely out of arm's reach of the President. When Roosevelt asked Hopkins to turn that legendary focus to waging war, Hopkins turned on a dime. Social work disappeared completely: labor was replaced by industry. Thus far, Hopkins' description might be applied to any up-and-comer. But the story is much more interesting. In this most public part of his career, Hopkins endured health deprivations that would have stopped the work of most. Stomach cancer in early middle age had required the removal of most of his stomach, with that surgery causing complications of its own. Hopkins lived in a state of perpetual malnourishment. That White House bedroom became an office, with Hopkins in pajamas holding meetings and conducting business late into the night. Every trip abroad--and there were many--was followed by weeks in hospital, countless transfusions and prescribed diets (which were generally ignored). Yet Hopkins was always eager to fight the fire, to smooth the transaction, to bring restive leaders together. It is of course a reasonable goal of any historian to understand the motives of the characters that make up that history. As with any human, we can never know what was at Hopkins' very core. It certainly wasn't money--he never made much and was essentially broke when he died. The power he accumulated was always in the service of Roosevelt (and one final mission for Truman) and it appears he kept those goals in mind above all else. But it's fair to say he often understood the goals of world leaders better than they understood themselves. He flattered. He misdirected and occasionally lied. He caroused if necessary. He met one-on-one when needed and avoided those meetings when they would have been counterproductive. But he was always the man that national leaders--whether British, American or Soviet--wanted at the table. Even when national goals were widely divergent, he was the man they all trusted. His poor health was known by all. They knew what they were asking him to sacrifice when they put him on yet another flight to Moscow. Or London. Or Tehran. In the end there was nothing left to give. Hopkins survived the war by only months. For me, the most important part of this much-appreciated book was the way it conveyed the flux, the dynamism and fluidity of war strategy. It's easy to list the events (Hitler invades Poland, Pearl Harbor, North Africa, Normandy), but it's much harder to convey how those decisions hung by a thread. If Harry Hopkins hadn't been there to sooth feelings, to cajole, to tease or offer blunt assessment, things would certainly have gone in different directions. We can argue about particular decisions--that's part of the enjoyment of history. But it's like arguing about whether Ty Cobb could have hit Pedro Martinez. We are left with what was. Harry Hopkins, the indispensable man, was at the center of it.

A Gentle Guide to Improving Your Work Environment By William M Choat I have been interested in the Buddhist way of life and religion for years and have tried to find ways to work Buddhist traits into my daily life more and more. I do find time to meditate and contemplate life, breathe and relax, and do many other meditative activities throughout my hours at home. However, I have rarely tried to incorporate these concepts into my hours at work. I do have a few messages taped in my desk drawers and on my computer monitor which provide gentle reminders as I meet with adversity at work, but reading this book has provided many other useful ideas.Such ideas as the Five Slogans, using on-the-job compassion, providing help to all beings, being generous (both in deed and thought), protection from fear, and exercising patience are ways in which I was able to almost immediately improve my existence at work.Another monumental concept the author stressed is the use of the five slogans for empathy and compassion (chapter 12). A few of these slogans involve transforming mishaps into the path of bodhi, meeting the unexpected with meditation, changing your attitude, and being grateful to everyone. One of the great aspects of this book is that one does not need to be a perfectly practicing Buddhist to begin using many ideas presented; this book is a great way to slowly let Buddhist mannerisms evolve into the daily work life of almost anyone. By reading this book you'll learn not to condemn current behaviors or mannerisms, just increase productivity and happiness at work by taking a step-by-step learning process to develop confidence and let go of any ego which prevents progress.I found this book to be an invaluable source for new ideas of incorporating Buddhist ideas and mannerisms into my work life. This book is well written and well organized. Many thanks to the publisher and netgalley.com for making this book available for preview.

If you have read, literally, anything about Buddhism, this book has nothing to offer you. The author disjointedly glazes over Buddhist philosophy while occasionally, and awkwardly, throwing in a sentence or two after pages of rambling in an effort to tie what he is saying back to work. In that sense, it also has nothing to offer anyone who is trying to find a better philosophy for dealing with the modern workplace. The author comes across as strangely interested in himself despite his ostensible message of focusing less on the self as part of an enlightened existence. He bizarrely injects politics several times, including a crack at George Bush (no, you aren't mistaken--this book was published in 2014), and several episodes of fawning over Barack Obama. The author claims to be a student of Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, which is hard to believe having read some of Rinpoche's work and finding nothing in common between the two. Rinpoche is enlightened, passionate, and convincing; Rinzler is self-aggrandizing, patronizing, and shallow. If you want to know more about mindfulness, Rinpoche is a great place to start. 'Running with the Mind of Meditation' is an excellent overview of incorporating Buddhist philosophy into daily life.Bottom line: unless you're into the idea of a Brooklynite yuppie preaching Buddhism as a fashion statement, I wouldn't give this offering a second thought.

Setting Straight the Vegan Propaganda, Once and For All!

Are you a vegan who’s considering eating animal foods again, but you’re afraid of the consequences? After months or years or even decades on a vegan diet, you’ve probably heard all the arguments: that animal products cause heart disease and osteoporosis, that animal agriculture is ruining the earth, that saturated fat will give you heart disease and meat will rot in your gut. But what if all those arguments were wrong? In his compelling new book, author Joey Lott goes through the arguments one by one, taking them apart at the roots. Everything from health to environmentalism to ethics is covered, and you’ll be left wondering why the vegan movement ever gained traction in the first place.

Learn What Humans Are Really Meant to Eat

For hundreds of thousands of years, humans have relied on animals for food. In addition, there has never been a totally vegan society. So can it really be true that humans are not designed to eat meat, as so many vegan advocates claim? Lott examines this in depth, revealing the truth about what humans are designed to eat. Hint: we’re not actually herbivores, which is why you don’t see many people—vegan or not—standing outside, chewing on grass all day!

Take Your Part in the Cycle of Life

After 17 years as a vegan, Lott knows all about the fear, shame, and guilt that can go along with wanting to quit being vegan. But having come out the other side, wiser and healthier, he shares his perspectives on life and what it really means to “do no harm.” With compassion and plain old good sense, this book will appeal to both your emotions and your intellect. As Lott points out, “we might seek to take our place in the cycle of life rather than trying to step outside of it,” which is precisely what veganism attempts to do. If you’re questioning your vegan diet but still aren’t sure if eating animal products is for you, this book will clear up a lot of your reservations. Download it on Kindle today.

About the Author

"The secret to happiness is to let go of everything - see through every assumption."

Beginning at a young age Joey Lott experienced intensifying anxiety. For several decades he lived with restrictive eating disorders, obsessions, compulsions, and an inescapable fear. By the time he was 30 years old he was physically sick, emotionally volatile, and mentally obsessed with keeping any and all unwanted thoughts and experiences at bay.

At this time Lott was living on a futon mattress in a tiny cabin in the woods. He was so sick that he could barely move. He was deeply depressed and hopeless. All this despite doing all the "right" things such as years of meditation, yoga, various "perfect" diets, clean air, and pure water.

Just when things were at their most dire, a crack appeared in the conceptual world that had formerly been mistaken for reality. By peering into this crack and underneath all the assumptions that had been unquestioned up to that moment, Lott began a great undoing. The revelation of this undoing is that reality is utterly simple, ever-present, seamless, and indivisible.

Lott's books provide a glimpse into the seamless, simple, and joyous nature of reality, offering a glimpse through the crack in conceptual worlds. Whether writing about the ultimate non-dual nature of reality, eating disorders, stress, disease, or any other subject, he offers the invitation to look at things differently, leaving behind the old, out-grown, painful limitations we have used to bind ourselves in suffering. And then, he welcomes you home to the effortless simplicity of yourself as you are.

Not sure where to begin? Pick up a copy of Lott's most popular book, You're Trying Too Hard, which strips away all the concepts that keep us searching for a greater, more spiritual, more peaceful life or self.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. How did this get published? Zero facts, poor writing. Will make you want to go / stay vegan. By S.K. Wow. This is the worst ploy to try to sucker people out of money I've seen in a while. This guy doesn't even try to make his arguments seem credible. Even if he'd done his research and knew what he was talking about, I wouldn't be able to slog through the clunky, plodding writing again. If you're going to sell your soul to the meat and dairy industries, at least hire an editor and cite actual facts and science.

Read this, or any of his books, you will see that, apparently, he has really put himself through the ringer. Nearly killed himself with all of the extreme measures he's exacted on his mind and body over something like 20 years of trying to find health and happiness. And there's a lot that can be learned from someone like this, especially someone like Mr. Lott, who is humble and transparent enough to share the raw details, and a clear, concise, approachable writing style to boot. Seems like he does not shy away from taking a very specific, generally contrarian, stance on topics in which people are very passionate about (i.e. Veganism) I'm actually (pleasantly) surprised that he doesn't have more vegan extremists posting bogus reviews on here just to flame him. In short, if you want real advice from someone that has been through some very tough sh*t in his life, and has tackled it with some very outside-the-box thinking skills and an obvious passion for the subjects he writes about, then Joey's books will be a breath of fresh air.

4 of 6 people found the following review helpful. WASTE OF MONEY By Jen This guy is a hack. His facts have little or no basis. The book avoids all of the fundamentals and values of a vegan. If you are questioning your veganism, this book will only REINFORCE your veganism. Don't waste your money on this trash. This guy is just someone who wants to say what he has to say I guess, but it's idiotic.
