The key is that the study of religion uniquely qualifies him to comprehend the influence of myth in daily life, both from a historical perspective as well as from identifying logical fallacies.So while this is first and foremost a review of the book, I do chuckle at some of the “low star” reviews as the writers of those often use the very logical fallacies that Levinovitz brings to light in his book.The book was both highly informative and entertaining. Levinovitz walks readers through the history of a number of food myths: gluten is the obvious one, but also fat, sugars HFCS, MSG, salt, and others. He documents the history of “how we got here” and relates much of it to ancient practices and human’s unique needs to bond as a community and fashion a story around our behavior.At root, Levinovitz addresses three issues: 1) there are a thousand ways to eat in a healthy manner, and while you are more than welcome to eat as you see fit, don’t kid yourself that yours is the one true way; 2) the biological processes of the body are highly complex and inter-related and therefore, to deconstruct certain items or nutrients to individual impacts is wrong-headed; 3) science is nuanced, yet for reasons of public palatability, the media and so-called experts often oversell a position.On that last point I’d like to be clear to readers of this review. Due to the title, some may think that Levinovitz does not believe in such a thing as celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity – nothing could be further from the truth. The issue Levinovitz addresses is not that gluten isn’t an issue for some people but rather that the wholesale fear-mongering of gluten for the general population is misguided. I liken it to peanut allergies: because some people are allergic to peanuts doesn’t mean that the general population should avoid them or that there would be any health benefit to avoiding them.Finally, the two chapters “The UNpacked Diet” and “The UNpacked Diet, Unpacked” are absolute gems of writing! I strongly suggest that everyone read these two chapters, most importantly with the footnotes, to see an incredibly clever way to lay bare the issues. These two chapters alone are well worth the price of admission.

64 of 70 people found the following review helpful. Respectful, Informative Book By Jenny S Don't trust the reviews from people who either explicitly state or clearly have not read the book. Dr. Levinovitz's goal is not to tell you that you're dumb or that your symptoms are fake. His goal is to help you stop feeling scared/worried about the types of food that are regular staples of our diets. This book walks you through the history of food fads and provides explanations for why we all latch onto these food fads from a mythological point of view.This book did a great job of making me feel less nervous about enjoying the occasional dessert after dinner (is that much sugar going to cause me to be addicted to it? Am I going to gain a ton of weight? As it turns out, no.) I can now easily identify tropes and logical fallacies made in food fad arguments.I have two criticisms of the book: first, I don't think the author gives enough credit toward vegetarians/vegans for -ethical- arguments regarding their diets. He rightfully critiques the health-based arguments against the consumption of meat, but there are people out there who don't believe in any of that nonsense yet still refrain from eating animal products. I understand that the focus of the book is on people's health claims, but putting in a paragraph or two about that would help prevent alienating some of his audience. Second, I felt that his closing argument---eat what you want in moderation---wasn't as well supported as it could have been. He seems to make an appeal to common sense, which is exactly what he criticized all throughout the book. He explains that research generally supports that decreasing caloric intake and increasing exercise results in weight loss, but that isn't quite the same claim. Is there really no medical literature on the all-calories-are-equal hypothesis? I think the book would have benefited from a closer examination and discussion of this hypothesis.Dr. Levinovitz is very respectful in his critiques of food fads and their supporters, recognizing when the motivations behind developing a food fad are based in genuine concern for patients' maladies. But the pathway to hell is paved with good intentions, and they do not necessarily make for good science. So if you're open to having your assumptions regarding food challenged and are interested in the history of food fads, this is a great book for you. If you're dead set on maintaining your fad diet against all arguments and evidence to the contrary, pass this one up without giving Dr. Levinovitz unfairly bad book reviews.

By Suzi Elizabeth People who are authorities themselves, on the topic of diets and health, condone (and are referenced in) this book because Alan supports his well-reasoned arguments with research and valid arguments from authority. So arguing that this book has no merit because of Alan's educational background is absolutely absurd. This "fallacious authority" argument would only be relevant if he did not consult and cite experts (in addition to valid research) for the topics covered within this book.Also, using anecdotal evidence (e.g. "I feel so much better") and appealing to popularity (e.g. "Millions of people. . .") does not make for a good argument whatsoever. In addition to this, one reviewer is actually using a conspiracy to argue against Alan's book. Yes, this reviewer says that MDs don't learn about nutrition because they would "rather push pills" on their patients. Is the dreaded 'Big Pharma' behind that? MDs treat the whole person and this often includes talking about nutrition. MDs do care about their patients you know; they are there to help you be healthy.One reviewer writes, "Why is this author raining on our parade?" Maybe it is because he cares about misinformation and general junk science being spread throughout our culture. People who don't want to be challenged with facts, so they can live in a fantasy world of magic diets, should just shut their ears and eyes. I, for one, would rather not remain ignorant to science even if it makes me uncomfortable. It is true, many people treat a diet or alternative health "lifestyle" as a religion. A faith-based religion: one that is immune to criticism even in the face of contrary science. As P. C. Hodgell wrote, "That which can be destroyed by the truth, should be."
