Do African men and women think about and act out their ethnicity in different ways? Most studies of ethnicity in Africa consider men’s experiences, but rarely have scholars examined whether women have the same idea of what it means to be, for example, Igbo or Tswana or Kikuyu. Or, studies have invoked the adage “women have no tribe” to indicate a woman’s loss of ethnicity as she marries into her husband’s community. This volume engages directly the issue of women’s ethnicity and makes stimulating contributions to debates about how and why women’s movements have a unifying role in African political organization and peace movements.             Drawing on extensive field research in many different regions of Africa, the contributors demonstrate in their essays that women do make choices about the forms of ethnicity they embrace, creating alternatives to male-centered definitions—in some cases rejecting a specific ethnic identity in favor of an interethnic alliance, in others reinterpreting the meaning of ethnicity within gendered domains, and in others performing ethnic power in gendered ways. Their analysis helps explain why African women may be more likely to champion interethnic political movements while men often promote an ethnicity based on martial masculinity. Bringing together anthropologists, historians, linguists, and political scientists, Gendering Ethnicity in African Women’s Lives offers a diverse and timely look at a neglected but important topic.

Review “An important, original, and timely anthology bringing a feminist scholarly perspective to the workings of ethnicity and women’s lives in Africa.”—Victoria Bernal, University of California, Irvine“This volume fills a long-overdue need for a book-length treatment of the nexus of gender and ethnicity.”—Monica Udvardy, University of Kentucky“For the historian, these musings on sources, memory, and historiographic silences provide a highly stimulating invitation to rethink our approach to the history of identity in Africa. A very fine historically nuanced collection.”—Barbara M. Cooper, Rutgers University“A critical contribution to our understanding of the creation and practice of ethnicity in African societies.”—Elizabeth Schmidt, Loyola University Maryland“By insisting that gender is central to our understanding of ethnicity, and interrogating the past with a focus on gendered ethnicity, this collection makes an important contribution to the field of African studies. . . . The insights contained in this book are of significance to scholars not only of Africa, but of other regions of the world as well.”—African Studies Review

Highly recommended for gaining insight into the nuances of identity By Kathleen Sheldon This important collection sheds light on the role of ethnicity and women in a range of African societies in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, suggesting how to understand issues of memory, identity, politics, and colonialism from the point of view of women. Topics as disparate as religion, war, leadership, and marriage are discussed, and the societies under investigation range from such well-known groups as the Zulu in South Africa and the Hutu and Tutsi in Rwanda, to less studied communities in Tanzania, Mozambique, and Nigeria. Highly recommended for gaining insight into the nuances of identity, history, and gender.

In The Way I Hear It, Gael Hannan explodes one myth after another in a witty and insightful journey into life with hearing loss at every age. Blending personal stories with practical strategies, Gael shines a light onto a world of communication challenges: a marriage proposal without hearing aids in, pillow talk and other relationships, raising a child, going to the movies, dining out, ordering at the drive-thru, in the classroom, on the job and hearing technology. With the publication of The Way I Hear It, we can add compelling author to the mix.I have long enjoyed reading Gael's blog posts at HearingHealthMatters.org because of her honesty infused with humor. She takes her writing one step further with an entertaining and researched look at the life of a person with hearing loss. As someone who has lived with hearing loss most of her life, Gael purports that there are no quick fixes to her situation, no one technology or communication method that will magically make all her hearing scenarios easy. What her book does outline is how individuals living with hearing loss can not only accept what they can and cannot hear, but how they can thrive as an advocate for their accessibility needs. She lists "10 Good Reasons to Wear Hearing Aids," and reveals how this technology has enhanced her life. Gael also includes information about cochlear implants while confessing that she personally is considered "too high-functioning" with hearing aids to be a candidate for them. The book details many funny and sad realities of what Gael can and cannot hear, including not being able to carry on conversations in a dark room while being knowledgable of speechreading (the ability to read lips). One section ends with Gael's poetic narrative, "If I Were a Hearing Person" where she cleverly fantasizes what life would be like without hearing loss. She mentions a number of support organizations that have enriched her life and others, including the Hearing Loss Association of America, Association of Late-Deafened Adults, and the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association (Gael lives in Canada).Toward the latter half of the book, Gael tackles everyday hearing situations or attitudes that may challenge those of us who cannot hear. She asks readers to take the "No Bluff Pledge": a commitment to not pretending to hear everything. Probably her most compelling quote is this: "Of all the barriers we face, the barriers of attitude are the most difficult to either identify or eliminate: ignorance, fear, inferiority, denial, and stigma." POW!Finally, the book encourages use of hearing technology and developing a good working relationship with an audiologist. Why? Because a knowledgable and proactive hearing care professional can help one find the most benefit from hearing aids, cochlear implants, or assistive listening technology. For individuals faced with the reality of hearing loss, such as myself, they will find insight, humor, and pages of inspiration within The Way I Hear It.

I don't have hearing loss but I have a friend who is hard of hearing. This book helped me to be a better friend--I had so many 'aha' moments while reading. And I laughed out loud a lot too. This book is a great blend of insightful, touching and funny.

It's like Gael knew me. I laughed so hard in places since I go through many of the frustrations and challenges she humorously describes.Gael also has a lot of helpful information. I think I will seek out an HL association again as I realize I've spent the last few years in a bit of denial and, I hate to admit, a great deal of bluffing. Big sigh. Thank you Gael! Blessings to you and the great work you're doing.

The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a perspective on apraxia that considers a link between the pathology of apraxia and normal motor skill. In addition, it is the intention of the authors to provide information that is theoretically interesting as well as clinically applicable. The book is a collection of papers by various authors working in the area of apraxia, almost exclusively with limb aparaxia specifically. Beginning with Hugo Liepman's work of the late 19th century, a cognitive neuropsychological model of limb apraxia is reviewed, the use of new technologies that are informative about the mechanisms of limb praxis are discussed, and issues related to research as well as clinical assessment/management of the disorder are provided. While acquired limb apraxia is the focus of the book, there are also chapters on handedness, developmental apraxia of speech, and disorders of handwriting.

"Self-evident truths" was a profound concept used by the drafters of the American Declaration of Independence to insist on their rights and freedom from oppressive government. How did this Enlightenment notion of self-evident human rights come to be used in this historic document and what is its true meaning? In The Declaration of Independence and God, Owen Anderson traces the concept of a self-evident creator through America's legal history. Starting from the Declaration of Independence, Anderson considers both challenges to belief in God from thinkers like Thomas Paine and American Darwinists, as well as modifications to the concept of God by theologians like Charles Finney and Paul Tillich. Combining history, philosophy, and law in a unique focus, this book opens exciting new avenues for the study of America's legal history.

The Declaration of Independence and God: Self-Evident Truths in American Law, by Owen Anderson

Review "This volume deepens our understanding of the foundations of our basic beliefs by analyzing the metaphysical and ethical foundations of the Declaration of Independence. Scholars and citizens alike will benefit from this subtle inquiry into the philosophical and theological underpinnings of that text. One might have thought there was nothing new and persuasive to say about the Declaration, but Anderson's excellent volume proves that wrong." G. Alan Tarr, Board of Governors Professor of Political Science, Rutgers University, New Jersey"Anderson's book is a fast-paced, enthralling tour through the history of American religious thought from the Puritans to the present day, with the varying understandings of the preamble to the Declaration of Independence as the unifying thread. Anderson skillfully ties together the fundamental questions in epistemology ('we hold these truths to be self-evident'), metaphysics ('created equal'), political theory ('inalienable rights'), and ethics ('the pursuit of happiness'), as seen through the lens of America's evolving theological consensus." Robert Koons, Professor of Philosophy, University of Texas, Austin"Owen Anderson's The Declaration of Independence and God weaves a fine narrative. Political thinkers, philosophers and theologians such as Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Paul Tillich, Charles Finney and John Cobb, to name only a few, are highlighted as he guides readers through key patterns of American thought in its intertwined religious and legal history. Anderson illuminates how philosophical assumptions, in particular skepticism, have informed the Supreme Court as it has decided major cases involving religious liberty and abortion. Throughout the book he uses the language of the Declaration of Independence, 'America's creed' as he calls it, to investigate its metaphysics and ethics and unpack the meaning of 'God' and 'self-evident'. One of the book's provocative contributions is to chart a course between Christian and secular interpretations of the Declaration by considering seriously the common Enlightenment ground of natural religion from which it springs." Paul Kerry, Associate Visiting Research Fellow, Rothermere American Institute, University of Oxford and Associate Professor of History, Brigham Young University, Utah

About the Author Owen Anderson is an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Arizona State University. His books include The Natural Moral Law: The Good After Modernity (2013) and The Clarity of God's Existence (2008), which study the ethics of belief in God, how God can be known, and the knowledge of God as the highest good.

Humphrey Especially in this time of Presidential political debate (Feb. 2016) I highly recommend this book. When hearing candidate's make promises and statements, it makes one wonder what their foundational belief's or worldview's really are. What is their most basic understanding of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence? Dr. Anderson's book clearly asks what is "self-evident." If something is self-evident to a human it should be self-evident also to the candidates that want to represent us as a nation. To build "Unity" in a nation divided would be a very worthwhile approach for our future Commander in Chief. Please read this book for your own understanding and growth as a citizen and as a human. Even if the nation cannot seem to see what is clear, you as the reader will be able to see where modern western thought has failed.Dr. Anderson is a thoughtful scholar who has examined his and others presuppositions, please do yourself a favor and read this book.

Chronic pain includes many types of conditions from a variety of causes. This book is designed to help those suffering from chronic pain learn to better manage pain so they can get on with living a satisfying, fulfilling life. This resource stresses four concepts: each person with chronic pain is unique, and there is no one treatment or approach that is right for everybody; there are many things people with chronic pain can do to feel better and become more active and involved in life; with knowledge and experimentation, each individual is the best judge of which self-management tools and techniques are best for him or her; and, the responsibility for managing chronic pain on a daily basis rests with the individual and no one else. Acknowledging that overcoming chronic pain is a daily challenge, this workbook provides readers with the tools to overcome that test. A Moving Easy Program CD, which offers a set of easy-to-follow exercises that can be performed at home, is also included.

I was a little surprised at the high levels of fruit in the recipes as I don't think this would be good for diabetics.
