If you think hearing loss is just a condition of old age—think again. In The Way I Hear It, Gael Hannan explodes one myth after another in a witty and insightful journey into life with hearing loss at every age. Blending personal stories with practical strategies, Gael shines a light onto a world of communication challenges: a marriage proposal without hearing aids in, pillow talk and other relationships, raising a child, going to the movies, dining out, ordering at the drive-thru, in the classroom, on the job and hearing technology. Part memoir, part survival guide, The Way I Hear It offers tips for effective communication, poetic reflections, and heart-warming stories from people she has met in her workshops and at conferences throughout North America. Gael’s humorous stories are backed by hearing loss research, and she offers advice on how to bridge the gap between consumer and professional in order to get the best possible hearing health care. The Way I Hear It is a book for people with hearing loss—but also for their families, friends and the professionals who serve them. Gael Hannan shares not only the daily frustrations, but also a strong message of hope and optimism for living successfully with hearing loss.

An Entertaining Look at Hearing Loss By Shanna Groves Hearing loss community activist, poet, performer and blogger: These are a few words to describe Gael Hannan. With the publication of The Way I Hear It, we can add compelling author to the mix.I have long enjoyed reading Gael's blog posts at HearingHealthMatters.org because of her honesty infused with humor. She takes her writing one step further with an entertaining and researched look at the life of a person with hearing loss. As someone who has lived with hearing loss most of her life, Gael purports that there are no quick fixes to her situation, no one technology or communication method that will magically make all her hearing scenarios easy. What her book does outline is how individuals living with hearing loss can not only accept what they can and cannot hear, but how they can thrive as an advocate for their accessibility needs. She lists "10 Good Reasons to Wear Hearing Aids," and reveals how this technology has enhanced her life. Gael also includes information about cochlear implants while confessing that she personally is considered "too high-functioning" with hearing aids to be a candidate for them. The book details many funny and sad realities of what Gael can and cannot hear, including not being able to carry on conversations in a dark room while being knowledgable of speechreading (the ability to read lips). One section ends with Gael's poetic narrative, "If I Were a Hearing Person" where she cleverly fantasizes what life would be like without hearing loss. She mentions a number of support organizations that have enriched her life and others, including the Hearing Loss Association of America, Association of Late-Deafened Adults, and the Canadian Hard of Hearing Association (Gael lives in Canada).Toward the latter half of the book, Gael tackles everyday hearing situations or attitudes that may challenge those of us who cannot hear. She asks readers to take the "No Bluff Pledge": a commitment to not pretending to hear everything. Probably her most compelling quote is this: "Of all the barriers we face, the barriers of attitude are the most difficult to either identify or eliminate: ignorance, fear, inferiority, denial, and stigma." POW!Finally, the book encourages use of hearing technology and developing a good working relationship with an audiologist. Why? Because a knowledgable and proactive hearing care professional can help one find the most benefit from hearing aids, cochlear implants, or assistive listening technology. For individuals faced with the reality of hearing loss, such as myself, they will find insight, humor, and pages of inspiration within The Way I Hear It.

I don't have hearing loss but I have a friend who is hard of hearing. This book helped me to be a better friend--I had so many 'aha' moments while reading. And I laughed out loud a lot too. This book is a great blend of insightful, touching and funny.

It's like Gael knew me. I laughed so hard in places since I go through many of the frustrations and challenges she humorously describes.Gael also has a lot of helpful information. I think I will seek out an HL association again as I realize I've spent the last few years in a bit of denial and, I hate to admit, a great deal of bluffing. Big sigh. Thank you Gael! Blessings to you and the great work you're doing.
