Accept and dissolve By Jerry Katz One afternoon 1998, I was walking along Santa Monica Boulevard in Santa Monica and I saw a table set-up on the sidewalk outside a small bookstore. One title featured a color photograph of a man who I'd never seen before, but who I could at once see was a communicator of the nature of reality. That day I picked up a copy of Sunyata: The Life & Sayings of a Rare-born Mystic. The book introduced me to a person who -- how do I describe it? -- who was stress-free. Easy to be with. Quiet. Harbouring nothing. Separate from nothing. Strong in his knowing and presence and in his confessions about what is true; strong in his pointing out of "egojies," but always seeing/knowing/being or "awaring" the Self that is the reality of egojies.Though I know Sunyata only through books and through brief discussions with Betty Camhi, who is the book's editor and who was a friend of Sunyata, I feel close to him, if that's possible. I can understand what editor Betty Camhi says in the Preface to Dancing with the Void: "After listening over a period of several years to ... questions and answers, I found myself becoming less interested in the verbal exchange and more interested in the silence and radiance that was emanating from this 'rare born mystic.' He had a healing presence."But that's not the book I'm reviewing.I'm reviewing Dancing with the Void, which is another book by Sunyata and co-edited by Betty Camhi, who co-edited the first book. This book is longer and better organized, but not necessarily a better or lesser introduction to the nature of Sunyata himself. In this book, as in the first one, you experience the silence of Sunyata. The silence comes through in the photographs (what first draw me to him) and his words. This book includes a biography by one of the editors, and several chapters telling of the people Sunyata personally knew: Tagore, Gandhi, Nehru, Ramana Maharshi, and others. Nearly half the book is biographical or autobiographical. The rest of the book consists of chapters on other people and topics: Albert Schweitzer, Milarepa, Kabir, Carl Jung, Gautama Buddha, Mysticism, Suffering, Awakening. The topics of sex, music, art, and death are covered within various chapters.Throughout this book, on every page, there is the simple utterance of truth. The people and the various topics are very interesting, but secondary. In the spirituality racket it doesn't matter what we talk about because all topics are like the wide end of a funnel, expansive and open to all kinds of discussion, but very soon narrowing to the point at hand, which is the realization of "this." There is a series of such funnels in this book and the topics are certainly there to be enjoyed, studied, contemplated, experienced, savored.Sunyata, Emmanuel Sorensen, was born in Denmark in 1890. He lived most of his life in India, where he felt most at home, and in the 1970's was invited by the Alan Watts Society to live in the United States. The following exchange reveals and tells much about Sunyata. They are taken from a taped recording of his talk of June 2, 1982.Question: Why are you here?Sunyata: Because the Alan Watts Society financed me here.Question: Why did you do that? What would you teach?Sunyata: I told them I had nothing to teach and they said, "That's why we wanty you." Aha! How nice! So I am the Silence behind all this noise.Question: Did you want to come to America?S: I had no wish to go anywhere. The body wask 84 and perfectly fulfilled, content that I would go to heaven rather than America. Utter constrast. It had to happen. I accepted it. I knew it could be done because they had financed Lama Govinda several times here. Bob Shapiro wrote saying, "Reality wise, Sunyaji doesn't need to do anything." That's why I'm here -- to do nothing.Q: How did you get on in India?S: My utter simplicity was an asset there. And my adaptability. I could be at home anywhere.Q: How did you come to choose India to live?S: I didn't choose India. India chose me. Tagore invited me to "come to India to teach Silence." And now I come here to America to do nothing. Look at that. Poetic. Tagore felt that Silence. That Silence is a kind of reality to me. It was there in my childhood. It's not the Silence of sound but really the Silence of desire, willfulness, craving, fear....Q: How did you come to this Silence?S: I was born so. And that was what the great sage in South India [Ramana Maharshi] said of me -- "a rare-born mystic." I didn't know what "mystic" was. I mean, what Ramana Maharshi meant by it. I built my hut in the Himalayas and lived there in solitude. No language to express it. Then the language grew up in letters to friends.Though the chapters in the book do not actually take the form of letters, one chapter is presented as a letter. The title of the chapter is Suffering. It consists of a long letter from Daniel, a patient in the mental ward of an army hospital. Daniel had been in communication with Sunyata, uses Sunyata's terminology, and understands Sunyata's statements of truth, but the suffering is great. Daniel writes to Sunyata:"I am in a state of anxiety -- my anguish unbearable. It is not mental depression, but just anxiety, fearful and blinkered, perhaps. Breath is choked, a heavy weight lies on the heart, the pain is both physical and mental. What is the meaning of this overwhelming pain? Why? Wherefore? How to escape it? How to live through it?..."Surely, suffering is the characteristic of human life. But in a hospital, in a prison and in a mental home, this suffering is starkly uncovered and undisguised and strikes one right in the face."These are long letters. In part, Sunyata replies: "Weep and cry -- Dan, accept and dissolve. Let the due suffering overwhelm ego and ego-ridden mind. You will emerge. You are invincible. Sin, Karma, Self, God, etc., are all words, words, words, concepts and abstractions, until they happen to us and often painfully. The sin is ignorance, unawareness, blinkers and ego blindness, so don't harbor, develop or nourish a sin-complex or guilt complex. Karma, prenatal, pre-ego and ego-made, must be accepted as a fact in living. It can be atoned -- and we need not accumulate any more prarabdha. By our attitude and integral awareness, it is accepted, atoned and transcended. So let's drop our cumbersome conceit of agency, says Wuji."Dancing with the Void is a gift of healing, wholeness, reality, silence. There is a side story told in Betty Camhi's preface. This book would never have been born if it were not for a nearly impossible meeting between Betty and the man who was entrusted with writings that became this book. That meeting was apparently mediated or grace-given by Ammachi. Betty's preface ornaments this book with a light entirely its own, one which makes us laugh at the non-separateness simplicity of everything. Perhaps like Betty's meeting, a meeting with Sunyata is inevitable.Jerry Katz

16 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Experience samadi while reading! By Lawrence L. Shippen Reading the book, "Dancing with the Void" was a rare experience! Although it is clearly written and not over-long, it took me rather a long time to get through the book because reading it allowed me to touch the mind of Sunyata, and I kept going into samadi. Sometimes several times per page. Sunyata, it seems, is truely a "rare-born mystic" and the clear and respectful editing by Camhi and Rai allows one to experience his presence in a most dynamic way.I would encourage anyone interested in the inner life to experience this wonderful book -- and through it the mind of Sunyata.

About the Author Mary Swartz Rose (October 31, 1874 – February 1, 1941) was an influential American laboratory scientist and educator in the fields of nutrition and dietetics. A prominent American nutritionist during the first half of the 20th century at Columbia University Teachers College in New York City, Rose authored several influential textbooks, the Laboratory Handbook for Dietetics, first published in 1912, and three editions of The Foundations of Nutrition, as well as books for the general public, such as Feeding the Family in 1916. Rose co-founded the American Institute of Nutrition and served as its fifth president in 1937-1938.

All that we canpossibly spare is needed in Europe for starving little ones. Inany shortage slogan must be "children first." (loc 80-83)"Everyday Foods in War Time" is an interesting little tract written for World War I moms.I found it particularly interesting not only because it tells us about what the then-current thinking was on scientific nutrition and 'vitamines', but also because of what it shows us about home life at that time: what the average family was likely to have for their meals.The author is, for example, a huge fan of milk, which she advises everyone partake in. Milk being the 'perfect food'. But in lieu of milk being needed by the starving babies of Europe, she suggests vegetables and grains, even bananas.Those of us who enjoy looking into the past will enjoy this book. There is a great deal of information of all sorts, as well as terms that are spelled differently, and which have different meanings. [The author uses "Spring Fever" for example to mean a sort of illness, and not as we currently do, to imply that someone feels the urge to kick up their heels.]Excellent edition. I am not a nutritionist so I don't know how well her advice holds up to scientific scrutiny but I will say she offers good advice on grains and reducing our dependence upon wheat as well as other advice on milk, meats, etc.I enjoyed it!

By Bay Bridge Sue Another great insight into the WW1 food mentality and how to stretch foods to keep the boys over there fed while keeping energy and stamina up here. While some scientific nutritionists may scoff at this book, it was written to keep people alive and active and working during a time of shortages... and remember, it's recipies like these that people lived on. So before somoene says "Oh, that would never work"... it DID work.

Many of the cases, I had never heard of previously.The reason I gave this book 4 stars out of 5 is because I am sure there are more cases such as these that the author could have included, but didn't.Had he done so, I would have given this a complete 5 star rating. None the less though, it is a very good book, and a book I would highly recommend to throw, who are interested in cases such as these.

It details one woman's experiences before, during and after surgery. She includes information about pre-surgery dieting and prep for surgery, as well as post-surgery diets, and lots of recipes. I think that is probably one of the toughest parts about weight loss surgery - figuring out what you can eat after it is done.I think the most beneficial part for prospective surgery candidates is the personal experiences that the author relates. You get a sense of what to expect in terms of pain, the difficulties of the diet, and potential frustrations or complications that can arise around the surgery. The author is based in the UK and got the surgery in France, so the experience might be a little different if you are based in another part of the world, but in all, a good, personal guide to the weight loss surgery world.

Takes the fear out of it By western lover If you are considering having weight loss surgery then this book is a must-read to inform you about what to expect along the way. The author shares her own journey in a step by step diarized format, right from the pre-operative diet through to the aftercare and how she was feeling each day. In doing so she takes the fear factor out of what lies ahead and it is quite reassuring. She definitely tells it like it is but it also makes it all feel very doable. One of the scariest things is not knowing how you are going to feel, or how long you will feel a certain way and also what foods are better than others, how much, or how little. This book outlines all of that in a simple, easy format which is full of good advice and even has recipes. If you are thinking about undergoing this kind of surgery then definitely read this book.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. good research tool By Susan-128 Before I read this book, I thought that having a gastric band fitted was a very simple procedure with minimum risk and side effects and that after fitting, the patient would lose weight very quickly, just like magic……It turns out that I was very wrong and this book has served as a great education to me. I am not in the market for having a gastric band fitted but I would imagine that many people who are thinking about it would probably share my original and naïve views.I like that there is a personal diary of the authors first-hand account of the post operation days also.Over all, this is a good book and I would recommend this as a good research tool for anyone who is even thinking about undergoing the procedure.

By Elisa "Ebola" pulls no punches - this is an unvarnished look at the plausible factors that made the outbreak an epidemic, and nearly a pandemic. It reports what we know (not much), and what we do not yet know (quite a lot). This book provides a complete picture of viral biology, epidemiology, drug screening, and immunology. It delves into the politics of Ebola and public health policy. This area includes some real surprises, like the CDC director's testimony that there were no mutations in the virus. I found the insider's view fascinating, especially the revelation that the White House held a conference call to tell scientists what to tell the public, and then the CDC gave bad info about the mutations, as well. Anyone with high school biology can read the book and understand it. Everyone interested in what mistakes to avoid for the next outbreak should read this book. A pleasant read about a painful topic.

Ebola, an evolving story — a great book that will keep you glued till the end By Vivek Jamwal It talks about the virus from a nicely and appropriately referenced medical point of view, without boring the reader with unnecessary scientific or biologic detail that may interest only a couple of readers. Then it gives a much broader overview of the epidemics, looking with a very transparent and neutral opinion on everything that surrounds the virus itself, from its political and economic consequences, to how the various international health institutions reacted to the virus outbreak. The book also helps give the reader a general overview on Africa itself, that goes very far from the usual stereotyped "poor children dying every day of malnutrition" that TV usually depicts.It is clear that the author went to great lengths to offer a well-documented, deeply researched overview about the virus and all its social and clinical consequences. I also found very interesting how he debunked several myths that bounced around the epidemic, showing how much or "informed" society still relies on word of mouth disinformation, and how blissful ignorance still reigns in our "civilized world". The numerous insights and reviews on all the data about the virus leave the reader with a lot more questions that still need to be answered, and I always like when a bookleaves me space to think and further investigate to satisfy my curiosity. All in all I definitely recommend this book, both to more informed people like scientist who want a general overview on the smallest detail on Ebola, as well to common people who just want to entertain themselves with a properly informed reading.

By Jijnasu Forever Without any reliance on overly religious constructs, Bays provides a collection of exercises that will force a reader to reevaluate one's degree of engagement with oneself and the surroundings and improve one's mindfulness - the ability to be engaged without being critical or judgmental. (Review based on a review copy via NetGalley and adapted from my blog)Not surprisingly, the core message is similar to other Eastern thoughts - for example, Krishnamurti's "being engaged, but not attached". What Bays is able to accomplish in this book is to interpret rigorous philosophy, frame it using psychological studies and provide an actionable exercise with clear instructions on what to observe and anticipated impacts. In that sense, this book is deceptively simple - it can come across as an oversimplification of the mindfulness discipline but after practicing 4 exercises chosen from the book, its profoundness in simplicity is remarkable.Bays provides a series of 52 exercises (one for each week) for improving one's mindfulness. Each chapter provides a short description of the exercise itself, the philosophical underpinnings, observations from those who practiced that exercise, and a 'deeper' interpretation ("what does this exercise really mean?"). The succinctness of each chapter is matched only by its simplicity. A reader will be tempted to be working on more than one exercise at a time...I think it is worthwhile to spend an entire week devoted to just one exercise - thereby achieving a degree of patience training as a bonus. For those more inclined to Eastern philosophy, pairing the exercise with a daily thought exercise based on Krishnamurthi's Book of Life is a good way to structure one's experiment with the exercises.The exercises are not necessarily organized by any themes (perhaps intentionally), Whether they are in the form of breathing exercises (where the similarities with the Pranayama (yoga) is striking, though one shouldn't be surprised) or exercises associated with eating, or those geared towards increasing our field of vision and sensation.. each exercise provides a very subtle nudge for behavior modification - all, with the intent to increase awareness. These exercises are not very abstract either. For example, the very first one that aims to increase our awareness of our less dominant hand is quite fun to try out (in fact with Wii Sports and other games, this is an exercise which can actually use technology to observe one's behavior without any bias - the disparities in scores using my right and left hands decreased in a week's time... but, the exercise achieved its purpose - increase awareness of how for-granted I took the other hand...). Most exercises are structured in a way where one can easily quantify the impact.Whether you are a novice to the mindfulness discipline or looking to enhance your meditation aptitude, or discover new ideas to improve one's awareness, this book will not disappoint. It is not intended to be an introduction to mindfulness - but an intermediate level practice guide for someone familiar with the concepts. On the other hand, Bays is also likely to inspire a reader to be more curious on the discipline. For the price of a few lattes, this book can potentially change the way you relate to yourself and your surroundings. One can't assign a value for that opportunity. A must read. (5*)

A Worthwhile Mindfulness Guide By Don I write mindfulness books myself, and what I love about this book is that I can open it up anywhere and find a valuable mindfulness practice. Each chapter is short and to the point, which suits the material. There's a lot more in each chapter then meets the eye--meaning that you could easily devote entire week to each subject. Actually, Chozen Bays' own monastery uses each of the practices included here one week at a time. I like reading one a day as a centering practice. This book is for those who are new to mindfulness, as well as for those with an ongoing practice. Highly recommended!

I started "the leaving no trace project" that project alone got me on track. Everyone needs to read this book. It is more than a self help book, it truly can change your life one little step at a time. All you need to do is get on the path, stay on it, and never look back. I would highly recommend this book especially for senior citizens who are trying to decide whether to stay in their own homes or go into "assisted living." My advice: get rid of the clutter, take one baby step at a time, downsize everything, maybe get a like minded room mate and stay in your own humble little abode. I hope they all manage to get a small plastic toy from the cereal box is based on a man who was to spend 42 years of his working life working in prisons, both in the United Kingdom and in Western Australia. During his career he was to face a prison riot, the aftermath of two subsequent prison riots, dealing with deaths in custody and having to deal with prisoners on a daily basis, some of whom had committed the most heinous crimes. He also had to deal with continual nepotism and cronyism by some elements of management that saw family and friends given employment opportunities without making any application or the positions being advertised so others would not have an opportunity to apply. Working as a Prison Officer, the author was busy with the day-to-day running of the prison and it was only as he moved up through the ranks and into an administrative role did he find that there was an ethic by some who believed in the motto: ‘Do as I tell you and not what I do.’ To question these unethical practices would have one ‘blacklisted’ and any future applications for promotion etc. would be met with failure. This book is not about the present but of past practices, although in saying that the author wonders if anyone has done anything about dealing with the nepotism and cronyism that was so openly evident. Some may criticise what the author has written but he would ask why? He believes that most below the position of management would agree in some respects and it would be the management that would be critical… and if that is the case, the saying is correct: ‘The truth can sometimes hurt.’

About the Author Gareth Morris was born in the mining village of Senghenydd in South Wales. He was the youngest of seven surviving siblings and saw the hardships of the 1950s in the mining community during that time. They talk of 'the good old days', but Gareth remembers that was far from the truth. Holidays or luxuries were only things you could dream of, but what the village did have was a community spirit. Gareth left school in June 1963, aged 15, and started work in a local engineering company. During his time in the engineering company Gareth was able to complete an apprenticeship as a fabricator welder. He stayed there until 1971 when he left to join the Prison Service. Joining the Prison Service was the start of a journey that saw him spend the next 42 years working in the prison environment. Although leaving school with a basic education, Gareth was to strive to learn and be as best as he could in whatever he set out to achieve. In 1981 Gareth emigrated to Australia to join the Prison Service in Western Australia. During his working experience in Western Australia Gareth was to achieve a great deal, with some of his Operational Compliance reports being submitted to the State Parliament of Western Australia. Gareth went on to achieve the distinction of being the only external person to attend the Western Australia Police Academy, successfully completing the Prosecution Officer's course, which led him to prosecute prison-related offences in open court. He also became a member of the Prison Officers' Appeal Tribunal that sat in the District Court. In 1997 Gareth's wife of 26 years was to pass away due to complications as a result of breast cancer.

By Bill Miller A very interesting read.Experiencing the Prison system as a staff member I can honestly say that Gareth has got it just right.This book is entertaining and captures the atmosphere of what it's like behind those secure walls.I can't wait for more like this.This is a great book to have on the bedside table if you want to get a glimpse of the mixed up system from the perspective of an insider.Well done Gareth.
