The Prajnaparamita ("perfection of wisdom") sutras are one of the great legacies of Mahayana Buddhism, giving eloquent expression to some of that school's central concerns: the perception of shunyata, the essential emptiness of all phenomena; and the ideal of the bodhisattva, one who postpones his or her own enlightenment in order to work for the salvation of all beings.

The Prajnaparamita literature consists of a number of texts composed in Buddhist India between 100 BCE and 100 CE. Originally written in Sanskrit, but surviving today mostly in their Chinese versions, the texts are concerned with the experience of profound insight that cannot be conveyed by concepts or in intellectual terms. The material remains important today in Mahayana Buddhism and Zen.

Key selections from the Prajnaparamita literature are presented here, along with Thomas Cleary's illuminating commentary, as a means of demonstrating the intrinsic limitations of discursive thought, and of pointing to the profound wisdom that lies beyond it.

     Included are selections from:

  • The Scripture on Perfect Insight Awakening to Essence
  • The Essentials of the Great Scripture on Perfect Insight
  • Treatise on the Great Scripture on Perfect Insight
  • The Scripture on Perfect Insight for Benevolent Rulers
  • Key Teachings on the Great Scripture of Perfect Insight
  • The Questions of Suvikrantavikramin

Zen and the Art of Insight, by Thomas Cleary

From Kirkus Reviews Prolific translator Cleary (The Essential Confucius, not reviewed, etc.) has gathered together excerpts from the Prajnaparamita sutras, which come to us from Mahayana Buddhism. These selections are not for the fainthearted. Drawn from The Scripture on Perfect Insight Awakening to Essence, The Essentials of the Great Scripture on Perfect Insight, Key Teachings on the Great Scripture of Perfect Insight, The Questions of Suvikrantavikramin, and other works, they address the question of perfect insight. The often arcane selections are made intelligible to the uninitiated by Clearys useful introduction and commentaries, but, refreshingly, Clearly does not water down the writings or package the teachings so that any dilettante can painlessly digest them. On the contrary, he writes that those stuck in a stage of spiritual development where they still need dogma and rules will find the gnostic insight of Buddhism . . . imperceptible and effectively unavailable. The original sources concur: Perfect insight, we learn, is like a bonfire,/Ungraspable from the four directions. So just what is this perfect insight? Another passage puts it succinctly: It is the practice of rising above all worlds. Proceed with caution: Like the rabbis who cautioned anyone under 40 not to study Kabbalah, some Buddhist teachers have warned that people may be harmed by hearing about perfect insight before theyre ready. -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. This series of prajna paramita writings from a number of Indian Buddhist sutras opened my mind to the "substance" of Emptiness and has informed, yet again, my on-going Zen practice. I have been reading Cleary's collected works for nearly two decades and have not exhausted ANY of these important translations. For the Zen practitioner, Cleary is not just indispensable, he is required reading!

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Get out of jail free By Norman Bearrentine [[VIDEOID:mo32Y0393IING0V]]Walter Lippmann famously said, "First we look, then we name, and only then do we see." This is an accurate description of the ordinary condition of human perception: what we see is limited by the names we have for things, by the categories of language. But language, even the language of science, is to reality as a map is to geography, and as useful as maps are, they don't come close to exhausting the infinite detail of reality.Cleary's Zen and the Art of Insight is about learning to appreciate the reality beyond words, and in doing so, to put the world as we conceptualize it into perspective. We are so habitually immersed in language that we don't see how it restricts our thinking and perception, and this book is about getting outside language in order to see those restrictions. As long as we are unaware that there is a greater world beyond the walls of our prison, we are unaware that we are, in fact, imprisoned.Once we see beyond the walls, we are free to come and go as we please--the prison is only a prison because of ignorance. With insight, conceptual thinking becomes a useful tool instead of a rigid enclosure.Cleary translates classical teachings on the art of insight and then comments on his translations, describing various exercises "intended to effect a shift of attention from the conceptual to the intuitive mode."(p. xi-xii) These exercises include contemplation of impermanence, interdependence, emptiness, nonoccurrence, ungraspability, and the three natures of things; which lead to nonattachment, noninvolvement, and nongrasping. (This listing may not be exhaustive.) Further insights result:"The ordinary perceptions and notions of things on which we act are conditioned by thought, imagination, mental pictures, and mental talk. All of these inner activities that influence our perception and behavior are also conditioned by other factors, both inherited and acquired. Therefore a temporary cessation of the stream of conditioned thought, imagination, envisioning, and description is employed to give the mind room to perceive things more directly. Terms such as gone and vanished refer to this practice of halting or stopping the flow of habit; they do not mean to suggest that insightful people can no longer think, imagine, envision, or speak."(p.22)In "Afterword; Warnings on the Label," Cleary advises that these teachings are not for everyone:"...the list of contraindications--people with mentalities for which the teachings are not recommended--also provides a framework for preliminary self-examination, through which one may approach insight by way of psychological housecleaning."(p. 150)Most of the Afterword is included in "Look Inside!" so you can check to see if your particular mentality is among those for whom this book is not recommended.(The video is illustrative of ideas found in the book, rather than a direct commentary.)

On Liberty, originally intended as a short essay. The work, published in 1859, applies Mill's ethical system of utilitarianism to society and the state. Mill attempts to establish standards for the relationship between authority and liberty. He emphasizes the importance of individuality which he conceived as a prerequisite to the higher pleasures—the summum bonum of Utilitarianism. Furthermore, Mill criticized the errors of past attempts to defend individuality where, for example, democratic ideals resulted in the "tyranny of the majority". Among the standards established in this work are Mill's three basic liberties of individuals, his three legitimate objections to government intervention, and his two maxims regarding the relationship of the individual to society "which together form the entire doctrine of [Mill's] Essay." On Liberty was a greatly influential and well received work, although it did not go without criticism. Some attacked it for its apparent discontinuity with Utilitarianism, while others criticized its vagueness. The ideas presented in On Liberty have remained the basis of much liberal political thought. It has remained in print continuously since its initial publication.

On Liberty, by John Stuart Mill

From the Back Cover

Discussed and debated from time immemorial, the concept of personal liberty went without codification until the 1859 publication of "On Liberty." John Stuart Mill's complete and resolute dedication to the cause of freedom inspired this treatise, an enduring work through which the concept remains well known and studied. The British economist, philosopher, and ethical theorist's argument does not focus on "the so-called Liberty of the Will but Civil, or Social Liberty: the nature and limits of the power which can be legitimately exercised by society over the individual." Mill asks and answers provocative questions relating to the boundaries of social authority and individual sovereignty. In powerful and persuasive prose, he declares that there is "one very simple principle" regarding the use of coercion in society one may only coerce others either to defend oneself or to defend others from harm. The new edition offers students of political science and philosophy, in an inexpensive volume, one of the most influential studies on the nature of individual liberty and its role in a democratic society."

About the Author John Stuart Mill (20 May 1806 – 8 May 1873) was a British philosopher, political economist and civil servant. He was an influential contributor to social theory, political theory and political economy. He has been called "the most influential English-speaking philosopher of the nineteenth century". Mill's conception of liberty justified the freedom of the individual in opposition to unlimited state control. Mill expresses his view on freedom by illustrating how an individual's amelioration of personal quality and self-improvement is the sole source of true freedom. Only when an individual is able to attain such a beneficial standard of one's self, whilst in the absence of rendering external onerosity upon others, in their own journey to procure a higher calibre of self-worth, can true freedom prevail. Mill's attitude toward freedom and individual accomplishment through self-improvement has inspired many. By establishing an appreciable level of worthiness concerned with one's ability to fulfill personal standards of notability and merit, Mill was able to provide many with a principal example of how they should achieve such particular values. He was a proponent of utilitarianism, an ethical theory developed by Jeremy Bentham. He worked on the theory of the scientific method. Mill was also a Member of Parliament and an important figure in liberal political philosophy.

Alcat John Stuart Mill (1806-1873) was interested in the nature of Civil Liberty, and the limits to the power that a Government can legitimately exercise upon its citizens. He believed that some worrying tendencies could be observed in the England society of his time, and tried to warn others about them. The author basically explains his ideas regarding the preservation of individual liberties, not only due to the fact that they are rights owed to everyone, but also because they benefit society as a whole. For example, when he says that liberty of thought and of discussion must be preserved, he tells us that "Wrong opinions and practices gradually yield to fact and argument: but fact and arguments, to produce any effect on the mind, must be brought before it". How can mistaken beliefs or actions be proven wrong, if dissent is forbidden?. The loss for society is clear: "If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth; if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error".In order to preserve the liberties included in the concept of Civil Liberty, the author points out that there must be limits to the action of the Government. He says that "The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others". Any other reason is simply not good enough. Thus, Stuart Mill highlights the rights of the individual, but also the limit to those rights: the well-being of others."On Liberty" is not too long, and I think you are highly likely to enjoy it, if you can get past the first few pages. The problem is that even though the ideas in this book are quite modern, the language is somehow dated. But then, we must remember that "On Liberty" was written a long time ago...Notwithstanding that, do your best to read the first pages, and you will realize that after a while it will be much easier. This book is well-worth the effort you need to make at the beginning, because it is even more relevant today than when it was first published, in 1859.Are individual rights important?. Why?. Do they have a limit?. You will found the answer for these questions, and much more, in "On Liberty". What else can I say?. I believe this is a book that will help you to reflect on many important issues... I certainly can't think of a better reason to read it. All in all, recommended :)Belen Alcat

Liberty based on utilitarianism rather than human rights By Derek Jones This Kindle edition has an introduction written more than a century ago that offers no insight into Mill's essay and deals almost entirely with the relationship between Mill and Harriet Taylor. It is therefore primarily of general rather than academic interest."On Liberty" is one of the most important books on political thought of the nineteenth century. Fortunately for the 21st century reader it is also one of the most accessible. Mill was a libertarian who chose not to base his defence of liberty on natural rights but on his own revised version of utilitarianism:"I regard utility as the ultimate appeal on all ethical questions...grounded on the permanent interests of man as a progressive being."This enables Mill to argue that freedom is needed if man is to be able to explore all the avenues of human development that allow the human race to progress. Total freedom is impossible so what determines the legitimate boundaries of freedom? Mill distinguishes between self-regarding and other-regarding actions. The former should never be interfered with and the latter subject to limitation only if they harm the legitimate rights of others. For Mill free thought is a self-regarding action which should not be curtailed, and free thought is virtually useless without free speech. Mill then proceeds to add a utilitarian argument in favour of free speech: if an opinion is silenced then mankind is necessarily the loser whether the opinion is true or false. He advances a number of arguments to support this, concluding with the claim that a climate of freedom is essential for "great thinkers" and "it is as much, and even more indispensable to enable average human beings to attain the mental stature they are capable of." He has no truck with paternalists seeking to guide people's thoughts in the "right" direction. He was equally hostile to the idea that people had the right not to be offended; hence he opposed the blasphemy law. The single case Mill gives of an acceptable limitation of free speech is the case of corn-dealers and an excited mob. An opinion expressed in a newspaper that corn-dealers are "starvers of the poor" is legitimate, but the same view stated to an angry mob outside the corn-dealer's home may be limited if it "is a positive instigation to a mischievous act."Mill concedes that actions cannot be as free as speech and seeks to establish the proper limits of freedom of action. Mill proposes that "the sole end for which mankind are warranted...in interfering with the liberty of action of any of their number is self-protection." Because he rejects paternalism he opposes all interference with self-regarding actions. Mill would not have prevented people from taking drugs and he would have led the opposition to seat belt legislation. Mill even rejects state interference with liberty for the sake of crime prevention, e.g. poisons can be used for criminal purposes. Mill was willing to accept a register of their sale but not the banning of them. Mill believes we must not interfere with the "rights"of others but these are narrowly circumscribed and Mill makes it clear that "rights" are not the same as "interests". Hence cut-throat laissez-faire is legitimate. As for moral decency arguments Mill does say that sexual intercourse in public is unacceptable, and though fornication and gambling are acceptable he is in two minds about whether pimps and casino-owners should be allowed to operate. Mill says it is a difficult case that is on the borderline, but adds that in general we must resist attempts to limit behaviour for "moral" reasons because any such action is likely to be the thin end of the wedge.Though Mill is a very determined anti-paternalist he makes three exceptions: children, primitive societies and the disabled. Children must be guided until they reach maturity and they must be given compulsory education - something not given legislative force when he wrote. As for primitive societies, we must resist the notion that Mill was a typical Victorian believing in the "white man's burden" or inherent differences between races. He simply observed the reality of the world in the mid-nineteenth century but made it very clear any intervention in backward societies must be temporary with the aim to bring about self-government as soon as possible.Hence Mill was a much more determined libertarian than most modern writers on the subject. There is just one example where, at first sight, Mill may seem reactionary to modern readers. He wished to restrict the right to have children to those who could prove that they could support them. However, those who today wish others to be allowed to procreate at will do so on the grounds of human rights. Mill based his theories on utilitarianism, and not on rights. There was no welfare state when Mill wrote "On Liberty" and he was concerned with the well-being of children born to people without the means to support them.In view of the alleged growing restrictions on freedom in many democratic countries this is a book well worth reading. In particular I like Mill's argument that every restriction on freedom is the thin end of the wedge, providing a justification for further restrictions.

On Liberty: More Relevant Than Ever By Len Hart In his classic essay "On Liberty", John Stuart Mill deals with the issue of "civil liberties" -not the metaphysical issue of "free will". While most attacks on civil liberties have historically occurred from the right within the context of a tyrannical or an aristocratic rule, Mill deals with threats against liberty from within the institutions of democracy itself. The issue is especially relevant at a time when widespread domestic wiretapping and surveillance violates the Fourth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The aim of early libertarians was to limit the power of the ruler over those governed; Mill, however, identifies a need to limit the power of elected governments and officials as well. Mill is not merely addressing the issue of "who should rule?", he seeks to establish limits on the power that government may exercise over minorities and individuals. His work is more relevant now than ever. While "government of the people" is an ideal to be aspired to, Mill argues that such an ideal is often not the case in fact. He argues that those exerting the power of the government -elected officials, bureaucrats, the judiciary -often develop their own interests. They are sometimes influenced by those constituencies in ways that are at odds with the interests and liberties of individuals or other groups.Mill makes no distinction between a tyranny of one and a tyranny of many. A tyrannical majority running roughshod over the rights of individuals and minorities is no less a tyrant because it is a majority, because it is elected, or because it is elected by a majority. While society may not tolerate criminal behavior, for example, society may not legitimately interfere with or suppress all non-conforming behaviors indiscriminately or because a majority may not approve. What then are the powers that society may legitimately exercise over the individual? Mill answers:"The only purpose for which power can be rightly exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others."-J.S. Mill, On LibertyJames Madison -called the "Father of the Constitution" -may have anticipated Mill's ideas in his draft of the Bill of Rights -the first ten amendments to the Constitution. Implicit in the Bill of Rights is the recognition that the power of the state is a blunt instrument. Abused, it can oppress and repress individuals and minority groups alike. The Bill of Rights addresses this issue by guaranteeing "due process of law", limiting state power over individuals and groups, guaranteeing that groups and individuals may speak freely, worship freely. The Fourth Amendment specifically is a promise that our government made to us in its very founding:"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."-Fourth Amendment, Bill of Rights, U.S. ConstitutionLet's make something abundantly clear: there are no "inherent powers", "Implicit" authorizations" that would, in any way, overturn, limit, or repeal the Fourth Amendment. Many politicians are not only wrong about that, they may have deliberately lied about it. Moreover, Congress may not overrule the Fourth Amendment with statutory law. Constitutional Law is supreme and provisions in the Bill of Right are valid until amended as set out in the Constitution itself. Widespread domestic surveillance is illegal whatever is done by Congress ex post facto -and until the Constitution is amended, it will remain illegal. At last, ex post facto laws, themselves, are expressly forbidden by the Constitution.Mill is all the more remarkable for his insight into issues that remain contemporary. In every literate criticism of "special interest groups", PAC's, the gun lobby, the tobacco lobby, the Military/Industrial Complex, one sees the lasting influence of John Mill.On Liberty is essential reading for anyone interested in law, the principles of government, political science, political philosophy, indeed, freedom itself. It is also essential reading for anyone interested in learning about the intellectual underpinnings of Anglo-American civil liberties.

Warlords are individuals who control small territories within weak states, using a combination of force and patronage. In this book, Kimberly Marten shows why and how warlords undermine state sovereignty. Unlike the feudal lords of a previous era, warlords today are not state-builders. Instead they collude with cost-conscious, corrupt, or frightened state officials to flout and undermine state capacity. They thrive on illegality, relying on private militias for support, and often provoke violent resentment from those who are cut out of their networks. Some act as middlemen for competing states, helping to hollow out their own states from within. Countries ranging from the United States to Russia have repeatedly chosen to ally with warlords, but Marten argues that to do so is a dangerous proposition.

Drawing on interviews, documents, local press reports, and in-depth historical analysis, Marten examines warlordism in the Pakistani tribal areas during the twentieth century, in post-Soviet Georgia and the Russian republic of Chechnya, and among Sunni militias in the U.S.-supported Anbar Awakening and Sons of Iraq programs. In each case state leaders (some domestic and others foreign) created, tolerated, actively supported, undermined, or overthrew warlords and their militias. Marten draws lessons from these experiences to generate new arguments about the relationship between states, sovereignty, "local power brokers," and stability and security in the modern world.

Warlords: Strong-arm Brokers in Weak States (Cornell Studies in Security Affairs), by Kimberly Marten

Review

"How can we understand the important phenomenon of modern-day warlords, often associated with state failure and transborder criminality even as state leaders frequently rely upon them as a source of order or peace in the most difficult of conditions? Kimberly Marten's Warlords blazes a new trail in answering this question. . . . This engagingly written book makes a number of major arguments, . . . [that are] pioneering in the study of warlordism, likely framing a debate for years to come on a subject about which there is as yet relatively little theory."―Henry E. Hale, H-Diplo/ISSF Roundtable Reviews

"I highly recommend Warlords: Strong-Arm Brokers in Weak States for anyone studying international relations or those working in foreign policy positions in the Department of State when faced with a developing or already entrenched warlord situation. The book is relevant considering today's worldwide economic concerns and weak states’ limited capacity to control their own people and territory."―LTC David T. Seigel, Military Review (March-April 2013)

"A virtue of Marten's principal-agent framework is that it allows the reader to identify the state in bas-relief, the backdrop against which the warlord moves . . . for North American teachers looking to introduce the North Caucasus with a lively seminary discussion, I recommend assigning chapter 5, Marten’s biography of Ramzan Kadyrov―the archetype of the charismatic, media-savvy (p. 133), self-aware, celebrity gangster. He has money, weapons, sociopaths on speed-dial, political protection from great powers, and a twitter feed @RKadyrov."―Jesse Driscoll, Political Science Quarterly (Summer 2013)

"Marten's book is a useful and informative one. Her analysis is persuasive for the four cases she examines, and her observations are pertinent. Although warlordism is sometimes a necessary evil, a national government should eliminate the warlord as soon as possible. A warlord is dependent upon patronage, and therefore, he is vulnerable to having his network of supporters undermined. Ethnic or sectarian tension may make this more difficult, but a popular national leader operating without effective opposition is in a strong position to act. In any case, removing a warlord requires that the national government possess specific information about the network of patronage and be willing to suborn the important members of that network. Marten has presented a great deal of information and analysis in only 262 pages. I recommend her book unreservedly."―Kevin McMullen, Infantry (2013)

"In Warlords, Marten provides a wonderfully nuanced description of the relationship between states and warlords. Warlords are individuals who require some level of state support and protection, but ultimately undermine state capacity by controlling small pieces of territory using a combination of force and patronage. In four substantive chapters, Marten gracefully outlines the trajectory of warlordism as a function of state construction in Pakistan, Georgia, Chechnya, and Iraq. Marten displays great depth of knowledge, and her description is rife with anecdotes, insider information, and humor, making it authoritative and enjoyable to read."―Stacey L. Hunt, International Studies Review (2013)

"Kimberly Marten has made a major theoretical and policy-relevant contribution to the field's understanding of these illusive and dangerous actors. Also, readers not only will better understand how they come to and maintain their power, but also will be equipped with a new framework for analyzing the challenges and choices confronting weak states in their efforts at consolidating modern, legal rational authority and accommodating the demands for security and economic development."― Jack J. Porter, Comparative Political Studies (April 2013)

"This is an important book. Indeed, it is destined to become key reading for anyone with interests in failed and fragile states, warlords, and armed groups that contest state authority―problems that unfortunately affect many polities today. Kimberly Marten's knowledge of a broad range of cases in the Southern Caucasus, East Africa, Iraq, and Afghanistan reveals a deep knowledge of the cases at hand, as well as theoretical mastery. Policymakers and scholars alike will greatly benefit from her insights."―Hendrik Spruyt, Northwestern University, author of Ending Empire

By olga This is a very objective study of the effectiveness of warlordism as a form of government, based on case studies from Chechnya to Afghanistan. the book may not be engaging if this subject does not interest you, but is well researched and well-written, IMO. The author correctly foreshadows that this kind of "mediaval" social contract may be becoming more rather than less common in its modern form. Book helped me out to have insight in some grad school classes on transnational issues.

By DrManejwala Pohl's latest work is a must-read for anyone struggling with chronic pain or anyone charged with helping people with chronic pain. It’s written in easy-to-understand language but not “dumbed down.” I found the section “Understanding” to be a scientifically accurate survey of what chronic pain really is and isn’t. In particular, the chapters on the role of emotions in pain and the difference between dependence and addiction were very helpful. Dr. Pohl knows of what he speaks—he served on the American Society of Addiction Medicine committee that recently re-defined addiction. The action chapters were very practical and specific. For example, most people know that mindfulness and exercise help chronic pain. But Pohl goes further to discuss specific exercises (mental and physical) that can help. I was also struck by a very compassionate exploration of the relationship between chronic pain and guilt…a powerful connection and cycle that can be so heartbreaking. And the bit on “secondary gain” poses tough questions that would make anyone who suffers sit up and take note. The book wraps up with deeper explorations into meaning, purpose and spirituality and their relationship to pain recovery. Those who are familiar with his previous books will find similar themes here but the science is updated and the relationship between the research and the recommendations are even tighter. It’s a quick read, but also will serve as a reference to return to repeatedly especially for those committed to practicing the actions necessary to manage their condition.

I normally avoid self-help books, but hoped that Dr. Pohl's wisdom, knowledge and compassion would come through the pages. It has. This is an important book which addresses many facets of a growing epidemic. It imparts the strength and understanding which is needed by those battling this lonely disease.

If the research is as shoddy as the copy editing, then run far, far away from this book. Better to set this one aside and get your hands on a copy of The Pain Cure.

Review "...a comprehensive guide to expedition planning and clinical field management in a host of hostile environments...whether you are a leather-skinned expedition leader, or simply considering travelling to unusual territory, a copy of this book, tucked into the to of your rucksack, will be one piece of extra weight you'll be glad you opted for." --British Journal of Hospital Medicine March 2009"The book describes so many risks from plants and fungi, animals, food, water and poor hygiene that it is a wonder than anyone travels at all." --Nursing Standard Nov 08

About the Author Dr Chris Johnson overwintered in Antarctica and completed a research degree in environmental physiology at a time when both travel and communications were far more tenuous than nowadays. This stimulated a lifelong interest in both travel and medicine in remote areas, and his journeys include regular trips to Scandinavia, Iceland, Greenland and northern Canada, whilst his Caribbean-born wife demands visits to other, hotter, climes. Working as a consultant anaesthetist in Bristol he has specialised in head & neck anaesthesia, is a keen medical educator, and has been involved in the development of appraisal processes and their associated information systems Dr Sarah R. Anderson is a Consultant in Communicable Disease Control and works in London. She has a long affiliation with expeditioning; her expedition experience includes the outback of Australia, the arctic north of Norway, a variety of trips to African and the mountains of Nepal. While at University she led an expedition to Uganda and was President of the Cambridge University Explorers' and Travellers' Club. Sarah is a UK Summer Mountain Leader and medical adviser to the Royal Geographical Society's Medical Cell; she co-edited the first edition of the OHEWM, and was co-author of Expedition Health and Safety - a risk assessment (JRSM 2000; 93:557-562). In 2001 Sarah acted as the medical officer to the RGS - Shoals of Capricorn Programme. She has a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene and has worked in hospitals in Uganda, Zimbabwe and South Africa, and as a flying doctor in Kenya with AMREF.
