Translated with an Introduction and Notes by Alexander Jacob. With Appended Essays By Mark Twain, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Henry Ford, Martin Luther. This classic study of the Jews, written when Rosenberg was only twenty-six years old, is based on an astonishingly wide range of historical sources and marked by the clearest understanding of the essential spiritual and intellectual differences between the Jews and the Europeans.Tracing the history of the Jews in Europe from the Middle Ages to the Russian Revolution, it reveals the frighteningly ruthless manner in which the Jews, always a state within any state, gradually succeeded in destroying all the European empires in their aim of establishing a Zionist world-republic.In the final analysis, the real danger of such a world-republic (which continues today under the guise of globalism) is seen to be that, by violently undermining the spiritual cultural foundations of the European states, it subjects the European peoples to a despotism whose intellectual aridity and obscenity are plainly revealed in the Talmud.

The Track of the Jew through the Ages, by Alfred Rosenberg, Mark Twain, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Henry Ford, Martin Luther

About the Author Alfred Rosenberg (1893–1946) was an early and intellectually influential member of the Nazi Party. Born in what was then Russia (now part of Estonia) of Baltic Germans, his family fled the Russian Revolution during which time he became strongly anti-Semitic because of the preponderant Jewish role in that uprising and resultant Red Terror. He was appointed editor of the Nazi Party’s newspaper in 1923, and was elected to the Reichstag in 1930 and in 1933 was appointed head of the Nazi Party's foreign political office. Following the invasion of the USSR, Rosenberg was appointed head of the Reich Ministry for the Occupied Eastern Territories, a position he held until his arrest in 1945 by the Allies. He was executed in 1945.

He meticulously traces Jewzism and its alien legacy past to present. Dovetails well with V. K. Clark's "World Freemasonry Unveiled" and "Albion & Zion United: the brizi-jewzi world menace". 5 stars!

19 of 23 people found the following review helpful. Rosenberg Remains Relevant By Carl Robinson This book is really a sum of several great authors who are aware of the Jewish Question, including Mark Twain. The book is centered on the writings of the Nazi writer Alfred Rosenberg, himself a Baltic German who was very aware of his German heritage (as most frontier people are) and very aware of the Jewish Role in the Bolshevik Revolution. Rosenberg was hanged for his writings at the end of the Second World War in a spasm of victor's justice but as the later articles in the book show, Rosenberg was not unique in his circumspect towards Jews. Indeed his recommendations about how to deal with the Jew-German conflict are pretty benign. They include not allowing Jews into important Government or financial positions, keeping them out of the areas where culture is formed-such as the theater, and not allowing foreign Jews into Germany, and supporting the Zionist project in Palestine. There is no talk of ovens, trains, camps, etc.Rosenberg's book is organized to present the track of the Jew in several parts:1. He categorizes Jewish predatory financial schemes in antiquity and the middle ages. Rosenberg argues that Jews were deliberately migrating from Israel in ancient times to get involved in money lending and other crooked practices from the very beginning of their history. After reading this one sees the Bible differently. One must really ask if Abraham left Mesopotamia with a mind to get involved in usury and other schemes in Canaan in the same way as Rosenberg describes elsewhere. Of course, Jewish financial schemes continue on today and in 2008 and 2009 they again came to the fore.2. Rosenberg argues that Jews, along with Freemasons, contributed to the French Revolution and the associated disasters between 1793 and 1815. This is the weakest part of the book. Rosenberg equates Jewish movements with an essentially Indo-European enlightenment movement. For a better reading of the subject of the French model of Revolution vs. the English model I suggest the Book God and Gold by Walter Russell Mead. There were a great many British Freemasons with Wellington at Waterloo. Additionally, Robespierre and Napoleon were not Jews and were pursuing their own interests with Jews as a lower ally. Of course, from the point of view of the victims of the French Revolution, distinctions between Freemasons, Jews, anti-clerical fanatics, and anti-Royalists will be difficult to discern.3. Rosenberg is on firmer ground when he discusses the Jewish role in Revolutionary Russia. In fact, Rosenberg says little new here that any other writer of the time said in the thirty year gap from the fall of the Czar to the start of the Cold War. He concludes his book with the recommendations mentioned above. This book continues on with other writers on the subject. Unfortunately, this part of the kindle book is less well edited, there are passages which have been cut and pasted in the wrong place, marring Mark Twain's excellent essay on the Jewish Question and there are many typos. In sum, this is a good book on the subject and an important read for all Americans. No country or people on Earth save Palestine suffer from the yoke of Jewish financial, cultural, and political control than the Americans. Since the 1960s, when the last of the WASP ascendency of America was brushed aside during the domestic conflicts related to the Vietnam War Americans have lost economic, demographic, and political control of their country. Indeed the Middle East mess we keep getting involved in has heavy Jewish direction. The middle class in America is plundered and each generation feels itself poorer than the last. The borders remain open. Despite the flaws described, Rosenberg's work remains relevant.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. It takes an open mind... By Basil J. Gilger An interesting and well documented history of a controversial subject. If you can keep an open mind and set aside your preconceptions, you may find it a fascinating read. If not, it may be an infuriating read for you.Although many of the things discussed were totally contrary to current teachings, they were well written and well reasoned. They did stimulate thought and provoked intellectual questioning.

For over three decades, medical researchers have been extolling the many health

benefits of a fatty acid called omega-3. Within omega-3 are three essential fatty acids:

EPA, DHA, and ALA. These substances are called “essential” because they are

absolutely necessary for the proper function of the body. And the range of tasks they

perform is truly staggering: They protect against heart attacks, they lower blood

pressure and cholesterol, they reduce arthritis and premenstrual pain, they improve

memory and stave off depression, and they fight wrinkles and skin disorders. They are

found in plant foods, such as seeds and nuts, and in cold water fish, such as salmon,

but new research shows that there is a more potent and absorbable source of omega-3

that may offer greater protection. Written by best-selling author Dennis Goodman, MD,

The Thrill of Krill

is the first book to provide a clear understanding of why krill oil is a

must for everyone interested in restoring and maintaining optimum health.

Krill are tiny shrimp-like creatures found in the ocean. To a great extent, they make up

the diet of most sea life, from whales and seals to squids and fish. Krill oil is to marine

life what fish oil is to human life―except that krill oil is far superior to fish oil. Studies

show that while fish oil is slow to be absorbed by the human body, krill oil is quickly

absorbed into the bloodstream. In

The Thrill of Krill,

Dr. Goodman explores the latest

research on krill, details the individual health benefits krill oil provides, and explains the

differences between available krill oils. Also included is a resource section that will

enable you to learn more about krill.

With so many nutritional supplements on store shelves, it’s hard to know which one

can make a real difference to your health. Backed by scientific research,

The Thrill of

Krill

introduces an exciting and amazingly powerful source of omega-3s that can

change your life for the better.

Review

". . . the first book to discuss why krill oil is a superior supplement. More than a discussion of krill oil's benefits, it goes on to discuss how nutritional fats work in general, why krill oil's unique structure allows the human body to more readily use it, and how to improve health and treat a range of common health conditions . . . a powerful survey recommended for any general-interest reader."

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Easy to read, but no page #s on Kindle version By Amy Jacobson I bought the Kindle version, which doesn't have actual page numbers. That is very inconvenient for me since I need page numbers when using the text as a reference. :( Other than that, I like the book a lot. It's easy to read, keeps my interest nicely, and doesn't ramble on & on about one subject like many textbooks tend to do. There are a lot of references to Florence Nightingale, including her history and contributions to holistic nursing, which I find refreshing; it's a nice way to tie in alternative therapies to traditional therapies.

Understand the role of epidemiology in clinical medicine for the best patient outcomes possible

For nearly a quarter of a century, Medical Epidemiology has been the go-to text for understanding the principles and concepts of epidemiology and the relationship between population-based science and efficient patient care. It delivers the most current information on patterns of disease occurrence and risk factors – all clearly linked to clinical practice through the use of Health Scenarios in every chapter.

This edition of Medical Epidemiology has been completely rewritten to reflect the transformative changes in the manner in which epidemiologic methods are being utilized in today’s healthcare as well as the major shifts that have occurred at the policy level.

New chapters have been added on many timely topics, including global health, social determinants of health, health inequalities, comparative effectiveness, quality of care, variations in care, and implementation science. Increased information about evaluating, summarizing, and using evidence for improved patient care and outcomes gives this edition an even greater clinical focus.

Tired of the pace and noise of life near London and longing for a better place to raise their young children, Mary J. MacLeod (known to all as Julia) and her husband encountered their dream while vacationing on a remote island in the Scottish Hebrides. Enthralled by its windswept beauty, they soon were the proud owners of a near-derelict croft house—a farmer’s stone cottage—on “a small acre” of land. Mary assumed duties as the island’s district nurse. Call the Nurse is her account of the first enchanted years she and her family spent there, coming to know its folk as both patients and friends.Gaelic fortitude meets a nurse’s compassion in these wonderful true stories from rural Scotland. The remarkable debut of an author now in her eighties, Call the Nurse is a treasure of sweet nostalgia.Skyhorse Publishing, along with our Arcade, Good Books, Sports Publishing, and Yucca imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs. Our list includes biographies on well-known historical figures like Benjamin Franklin, Nelson Mandela, and Alexander Graham Bell, as well as villains from history, such as Heinrich Himmler, John Wayne Gacy, and O. J. Simpson. We have also published survivor stories of World War II, memoirs about overcoming adversity, first-hand tales of adventure, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Call the Nurse: True Stories of a Country Nurse on a Scottish Isle, by Mary J MacLeod

From Booklist Being a nurse can be challenging at the best of times, but being a nurse on a remote Scottish island is something else altogether. In this charming memoir, MacLeod recounts her adventures as a nurse in the Hebrides in the 1970s. With MacLeod as a trusty guide, readers are welcomed into the island inhabitants’ crofts with their smoky peat fires. The book feels like a letter from a friend who has an eye for travel writing (despite employing clichéd phrases like “Little did I know” and overusing exclamation points). With a nurse’s no-nonsense manner, MacLeod relays tales of adventure, finding humor and humanity in her experiences but rarely revealing more of herself than necessary. She ably describes the quirks and generosity of the islanders as they face a series of emergencies and celebrate happy occasions. Instead of an overall narrative, this book reads, as the introduction attests, more like looking through a photo album, with a gloss of nostalgia that readers will enjoy. For James Herriot fans, without the animals. --Bridget Thoreson

Review “Julia MacLeod shares unique and enchanting experiences as a nurse in rural Scotland. Her stories will ring true with every nurse—or anyone—who has ever cared for a family or a community, whether in Scotland or America. Call the Nurse is a delightful read.” -- LeAnn Thieman, author Chicken Soup for the Nurse's Soul“Cozy and chatty . . . A lovely account of ordinary people thriving in an extraordinary landscape.”—Kirkus Reviews“The book feels like a letter from a friend who has an eye for travel writing. . . . With a nurse’s no-nonsense manner, MacLeod relays tales of adventure, finding humor and humanity in her experiences. . . . For James Herriot fans, without the animals.”—Booklist“MacLeod proves to be an engaging narrative writer who uses humor and vernacular to her advantage. Should be of interest not only to medical professionals but to all readers who want to escape to a slower way of life.”—Library Journal“This lively and heartening memoir evokes both the hardships and the humour of island life.” —The Scotsman"This charming, bracing reminiscence of life on a remote Hebridean island captures a vanishing world filled with memorable stories and characters. . . . Mary J. MacLeod makes you care, moves you, amuses you, shocks you, teaches you: This is a surprising, satisfying memoir."—Floyd Skloot, author of In the Shadow of Memory and The Wink of the Zenith: The Shaping of a Writer’s Life“Call the Midwife gave [us] . . . the nursing profession in 1950s London. Now, a retired district nurse [gives us] the heartwarming and humorous—yet often shocking—events on a remote Scottish island.”—Sunday Post, UK"A charming tale, packed full with reminiscences, rather in the manner of the recent hit TV series, Call the Midwife. . . . Her tales of joy, trouble, drama, and comedy are warm and humorous, telling of a bygone era."—Westcountry Life, Western Morning News, UK“Julia MacLeod has written a book which encapsulates Hebridean life during some decades past . . . with a sensitivity that reflects her nursing career.”—Lady Claire Macdonald of Macdonald, from her foreword

About the Author Mary J. MacLeod qualified as a nurse in England and has lived in Aden (now Yemen), the United States, Sweden, and Saudi Arabia as well as her husband George’s native Scotland. She is now the author of three books and lives in Ascot in Berkshire, England.

Henderson The Hebrides, which are two groups of islands lying just off the west coast of mainland Scotland, provide the setting for this charming collection of anecdotal experiences of a country nurse during the 1970s. Throughout the book, MacLeod is so intent on preserving the privacy of the islanders that she refers to the "wild, exposed" island which she and her family made their home by the name "Papavray," so don't try looking it up on any map--you definitely won't find it. Despite her use of such a pseudonym, however, her experiences are made not one whit less real to us, her readers, who readily come to feel part of her innermost circle of friends, so welcome and beguiling is her approach. The delicacy and vibrancy of MacLeod's text resonates with the warmth and passion of the Hebridean islanders among whom she worked. Anyone who has ever lived close to the sea, and who has savored its salt tang on their lips, cannot help but become enthralled by the sensuous wonders of the landscape that she describes in such vivid and glowing terms. Almost at once, one feels close to her, and becomes intimately concerned with her own concerns, as she cycles her way around the island from one patient to another. Her description of the surrounding environs is close to mythical in the poetic cadence of her speech, fringing in its mysteriousness on much loved passages of Daphne du Maurier: "The sky had cleared and the winding road was bright in the moonlight, while the dark waters of small lochs sparkled among the reeds."The appeal of the islands and island life permeates the text, from where MacLeod explains how she, her husband and sundry children decided to abandon the hectic pace in the south of England, together with all its stresses and daily pressures, to become "middle-aged dropouts," living on Papavray, to where they become so enmeshed with island life that they themselves start to seem an integral part of the rural landscape. Despite having to, at first, conduct negotiations for land "through a fog of half-understood cultural differences," they soon warm to the generous hospitality of the island folk, with the latter finding MacLeod's husband's electrical skills and her own nursing ones ever more indispensable. Somewhat akin to James Herriot's experiences in the Yorkshire Dales, the author recounts her experiences with the locals in tones of mixed a/bemusement and respect for their endurance and adaptability to the relatively harsh environment in which they live. The series of adventures upon which the MacLeod family embarks are recounted lovingly and with consummate ease, much of it being in direct speech, so that one feels as though one were there, experiencing the scenes unfolding before one. The pace of Call the Nurse flows smoothly and eloquently through the pages, with the reader becoming ever more engrossed with the ebb and flow of island life. No matter how jaundiced a view of people you might usually, you will not fail to be drawn into admiring the close-knit functioning of human interrelationships in the relative backwater of Papavray and to come to view others around you in a kinder light, aware, but at least a smidgeon more tolerant, of their foibles and failings--such a humanizing effect does this book have on one. Thoroughly recommended for both old and young, next time you have a break and wish to escape the rat race for just a short while, do try reading Call the Nurse--you won't be disappointed.

That is what Mary J MacLeod has done with `Call the Nurse', and her memories of living life as a nurse on a remote Scottish island more than 40 years ago make for a fascinating read.In 1969 Mrs MacLeod and her husband George lived in the south of England. But they had become disillusioned with their way life and all its pressures. They wanted to live a life less cluttered and frantic. They followed their dream and relocated with their young family to one of the remotest parts of the British Isles - the Hebridean islands off of Scotland's northwest coast. It was a world apart from the life they knew. On the island Papavray (the island's true identity is concealed to protect the privacy of those mentioned in the book) indoor toilets were still a luxury, while television was viewed with suspicion and even terror by some of the older residents.Nurse Mrs MacLeod soon became entwined in the lives of the island people, getting to know their stories, their troubles, their joys - and a few secrets - as she and her family found themselves increasingly touched by the warmth of the remote community.By the end of the book, the author refers to the many characters she met half-a-lifetime ago as `the dear, unique people who still live on that remote, rocky island'.In 'Call the Nurse' (published in the UK as `The Island Nurse') Mrs MacLeod takes us on a journey that captures the nuances of island life. It is a touching memoir that traces many stories across the seasons of a year, from births and marriages, to tragedies and deaths. Keeping chapters short and fast-moving, Mrs MacLeod crams a remarkable number of vignettes and incidents into 300-odd pages. In one chapter a window has to be removed to allow a bed-bound patient to be transported to a hospital, while there is a sinister reason behind a mysterious night-time rendezvous at a remote section of shore. There are intricate portraits of her neighbours, and description of the hardships of island life. The author herself experiences some of those trials, including having the steering column of her car break on a remote mountain pass. She returns to her abandoned vehicle hours later to find a concerned islander has fashioned a temporary repair using sticky plasters that holds together until she gets her car home. She joins the crofters one day sheep shearing high on the hillsides, where chatter, stories and jokes are shared, and sandwiches and Thermos drinks are consumed. As the bright afternoon turns to early evening Mrs MacLeod dallies, ensuring she is the last to leave the high vantage point. It gives her the opportunity to observe the village and the crofts far below. She writes: "Gradually, as the peace of the evening settled over the glen, I began to see little plumes of blue smoke rise from the chimneys as folk lit their fires. I listened - even distant voices had stilled, the hill was quiet once more, and I was left in the silent clamour of remembered noise."The author writes in a style that makes you feel you are right there, listening to the conversations as they happen and seeing the events unfold. When Mrs MacLeod turns her thoughts to her surroundings, she shows a talent for descriptive and evocative turns of phrase. The sea is "silver in owl-haunted moonlight", while later in the year, as the evenings draw in, she drives along the island's narrow, uneven roads "between small lochans with the brown peaty water winking at us in the failing light".A dozen or so islanders meet at a tiny croft for a ceilidh of drinking, unsophisticated entertainment, poems, songs, stories, jokes and reminiscing about "times gone by and people long dead'. Mrs MacLeod notes that once the small croft is full of people, and with a big peat fire generating heat in the fireplace, it soon becomes unbearably hot. "It seemed to me that ceilidhs were not ceilidhs unless everyone was perspiring freely by the end of the evening," she writes.Filled with stories that reflect the day-to-day lives of people far removed from the bustle of mainland towns and cities, Mrs MacLeod has impressively reflected the humour, warmth and culture that holds together these distant communities.

Preble I will have to admit that this is not usually the type of book that I would read but, having said that, I am glad I did. The story take place on one of the Out Hebrides Islands off the Atlantic coast of Scotland in the 1970's and follows the trials and tribulations of a district nurse and her patients. The nurse is not a "native" to the island so she has a bit of getting used to the way things work on the island. The story is an amazing look back at history, and a place that is frozen in time. The residents of this island eek out a living the way it had been done for generations before them by farming and fishing. Most of what they need is available on the island but on occasion, and these are some of the funniest stories in the book, they have to go "off island" to get what they need.My guess would be that the experiences she had "tending to her patients" would be similar to what rural nurses and doctors would have experienced in the United States a generation ago. Sometimes we forget that not everyone has the same access to medical care as those of us who are fortunate to live near a large city. There are many stories of folks needing to go to hospital either by ambulance or by air, and the difficulties that are associated with that. Life is not simple for any of the folks on the islands. The story follows the life of a district nurse and her family, who moves to the island from Southern England and take up residence in a Croft. The author does a fabulous job of telling her story, and there was times, that I could smell the peat fire burning in the distance or feel the cold wind as it was blowing over the island. She has the ability to make you laugh out loud at times and to also weep at the loss of one of her patients.Mary J MacLeod paints a picture of island life that is anything but romantic on one had but beautiful on another. She tells the story of the simple island folk who are always there, any time of the day or night, for each other and willing to do, whatever has to be done, to get things accomplished. This ranges from helping a bull cow that is stuck in the rocks on the beach to plowing the mountain roads in the dead of winter. Everyone gladly helps everyone without any expectation for pay back. I guess this is what was called the simpler times. If you are at all interested in Scotland, the Islands, nursing, or the simple life, or if you just enjoy a good story, this is the book for you. Do yourself a favor and read this book, you will not regret it.

In recent years, events in the Islamic world have captured the attention of the West to an unprecedented degree. However, much of the media coverage of events like the Islamic revolution in Iran has merely reinforced current prejudices and misconceptions about Islam.

This collection of essays, by specialists in a variety of disciplines, gives an impressionistic overview of contemporary Islam. Different areas of Islamic life are singled out for special attention; these include the problem of relations between Islam and the West, the role of the Sufi orders and the revival of religious fundamentalism, Islam and the feminine, Islamic economics and Islamic architecture. Geographically, the essays cover a wide area, ranging over Sudan, Turkey, Iran, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Each discussion should appeal to the layman and specialist alike and collectively they bring together a comprehensive range of material not often covered in one volume. Above all, they cut across the stereotypes of Islam found in the popular media, to reveal facets of a complex, living tradition often unsuspected in the West.

Behavioral Momentum Theory is concerned with the persistence or resistance to change of learned behavior in relation to its history of reinforcement. The theory is sometimes invoked in relation to reinforcement-based treatments of behavioral problems in applied and clinical settings. This book describes the development of the theory in basic research with pigeons and its metaphoric origin in Newton’s second law of motion. Readers are introduced to foundational concepts in behavioral research, the methods employed in research on resistance to change, and some basic quantitative techniques that are used to analyze data and develop theoretical accounts. In each chapter, the procedures and results of basic research conducted with pigeons and other animals are related to findings with human participants in comparable procedures; a final chapter concentrates on clinical applications. Much of the material presented here will be familiar to researchers in the experimental and quantitative analysis of behavior; I hope this retrospective summary of my work will prompt them to revisit unresolved questions and explore alternative interpretations. But this book is written primarily to provide some research and conceptual background for dedicated professionals and their students who are applying behavioral analyses to socially significant problems. If it helps them to implement effective, durable treatments, this book will have served its purpose.

For English-speaking readers, this book serves as an introduction to an important French intellectual whose work, especially on the issues of antisemitism and anti-Zionism, runs counter to the hostility shown toward Jews by some representatives of contemporary critical theory. It presents for the first time in English five essays by Éric Marty, previously published in France, with a new preface by the author addressed to his American readers. The focus of these essays is the debate in France and elsewhere in Europe concerning the "Jew." The first essay on Jean Genet, one of postwar France’s most important literary figures, investigates the nature of Genet’s virulent antisemitism and hatred of Israel and its significance for an understanding of contemporary phenomena. The curious reappearance of St. Paul in theological and political discourse is discussed in another essay, which describes and analyses the interest that secular writers of the far left have shown in Paul’s "universalism" placed over and against Jewish or Israeli particularism. The remaining essays are more polemical in nature and confront the anti-Israeli attacks by Alain Badiou and Gilles Deleuze.

New York Times, Wired, Atlantic Monthly, Discover bestselling author Steven Kotler has written extensively about those pivotal moments when science fiction became science fact…and fundamentally reshaped the world. Now he gathers the best of his best, updated and expanded upon, to guide readers on a mind-bending tour of the far frontier, and how these advances are radically transforming our lives. From the ways science and technology are fundamentally altering our bodies and our world (the world’s first bionic soldier, the future of evolution) to those explosive collisions between science and culture (life extension and bioweapons), we’re crossing moral and ethical lines we’ve never faced before.

As Kotler writes, “Life is tricky sport—and that's the emotional core of this story, the real reason we can’t put Pandora back in the box. When you strip everything else away, technology is nothing more than the promise of an easier tomorrow. It’s the promise of hope. And how do you stop hope?”

Join Kotler in this fascinating exploration of our incredible next: a deep dive into those future technologies happening now—and what it means to be a part of this brave new world.

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. The Future Is Here: An Introduction   It was early spring of 1997, about five years into my career as a journalist, a day of dark skies and cold rain. Peter Diamandis and I had gotten together for the very first time at a rundown diner on the outskirts of Chinatown, San Francisco. The diner was long and narrow, and we were seated toward the rear of the room. I was sitting with my back to the building’s far corner, Peter with his back to the rest of the restaurant. And the rest of the restaurant was staring at him. For twenty minutes, Peter had been getting more and more excited while telling me about his  newly  launched  endeavor: the XPRIZE, a ten-million-dollar competition for the first team to build a private spaceship capable of taking three people into space twice in two weeks. Already, the Sharpie had come out. There were charts on napkins, graphs on placemats, a healthy rearrangement of condiments—the ketchup marking the end of the troposphere, the mustard the beginning of the mesosphere. About the time he got loud about how some maverick innovator working out of a garage somewhere was going to “take down NASA,” people began to stare. Peter couldn’t see them; I could. Twenty folks in the restaurant, all looking at him like he was stark raving mad. And I remember this: I remember thinking they were wrong. It’s hard to put my finger on why. Part of it was a strange hunch. Journalists tend to be cynical by nature and disbelieving by necessity. The job requires a fairly healthy bullshit detector, and that was the thing—mine wasn’t going off. More of it was that I had just come from a month in the Black Rock Desert, outside of Gerlach, Nevada, watching Craig Breedlove try to drive a car through the sound barrier. Breedlove’s effort was terrestrial-bound rocket science, for sure. The Spirit of America, his vehicle, was pretty much a miniature Saturn V—40 feet long, 8 feet wide, 6 feet high, and powered by a turbojet engine that burned, well, rocket fuel. During those long days in the desert, I spent a lot of time talking to aerospace engineers. They all made one thing clear: Driving a car through the sound barrier was a lot harder than sending a rocket ship into low-earth orbit. In fact, when I asked Breed- love’s crew chief, former Air Force pilot turned aerospace engineer Dezso Molnar—who we’ll meet again later as the inventor of the world’s first flying motorcycle—what he was going to work on when all this was over, he said, “I want to do something easy, something relaxing. I think I’m going to build a spaceship.” He wasn’t kidding. Plus, Breedlove’s effort was exactly the kind of big-budget project you would expect an agency like NASA to get behind. Except there was no budget. And no NASA. The Spirit of America had a crew of seven working out of an oversized tool shed. And while they never did break the sound barrier, they got really close—670 mph (700 was the barrier)—and then ran out of cash. They were literally one sponsorship check away from making history. So, that day in the diner—despite Peter’s exuberance, despite the fact that, back then, the XPRIZE had no major sponsors and no money in the bank, and despite the fact that NASA had called his idea utterly impossible and the entire aerospace industry had agreed—from where I was sitting, some maverick opening the space frontier didn’t seem too outlandish. Of course, today, with the XPRIZE won, with the private space industry worth more than a billion dollars, and with Richard Branson’s SpaceShipTwo slated to begin taking paying customers into low-earth orbit over the next twelve months, none of this may seem incredibly shocking. But it was. In 1997, space was off-limits to anyone but big government. This much was gospel. Yet, I left that diner absolutely certain that sometime in the next decade, the far frontier would open for business. I also left the diner a little gobsmacked. In less time than it took to drink a cup of coffee, a paradigm had shattered—science fiction had become science fact. On the way home, I started to wonder about other paradigms. After all, if private spaceships were possible, what about all the other sci-fi mainstays? What about bionics? Robotics? Flying cars? Artificial life? Life extension? Asteroid mining? What about those more ephemeral topics: the future of human evolution, the possibilities of downloadable consciousness? I made a long list—and that list defined large parts of the next two decades of my career.Tomorrowland is the result of that journey. The pieces in this book come from an assortment of major publications—the New York Times, Wired, Atlantic Monthly, to name a few—and all were penned between 2000 and 2014. They are all investigations into those moments when science fiction became science fact and the massively disruptive impact these moments have on culture. Because of the blitzkrieg rate of change in today’s world, few of these stories appear exactly as they ran. Instead, I’ve updated the science and technology so—unless the tale is historical in nature—the information contained in this book is as current as possible. Furthermore, to help make better sense of things, I’ve also broken these stories into three categories. The first grouping—The Future In Here—is about us, an examination of the ways science and technology are fundamentally altering you and me. Here we’ll explore artificial senses (the world’s first artificial vision implant), bionic limbs (the world’s  first  bionic  soldier), and evolution’s future (say good-bye to Homo sapiens), among other seismic shifts in what it means to be human. The second section—The Future Out There—is about the ways science and technology are radically reshaping our world. Here we’ll cover everything from on-world paradigm shifts, like the birth of the world’s first genetically engineered insect, to off-world paradigm shifts, like the birth of the asteroid mining industry. Finally, in The Future Uncertain, we’ll examine the gray areas, those explosive collisions between science and culture—for example, the use of steroids for life extension or the use of synthetic biology for the creation of bioweapons—where lines are being crossed and controversy reigns, and no one is certain what tomorrow brings. This last bit is no small thing. All of the technologies described in this book are disruptive technologies, though not as we traditionally define the word. Typically, disruptive technologies are those that displace an existing technology and disrupt an existing market, but the breakthroughs described herein do more than dismantle value chains—they destroy longstanding beliefs. You will, for example, come across an article about William Dobelle, inventor of the world’s first artificial vision implant. Dobelle was extremely paranoid about talking to the press. This isn’t that uncommon, but it’s usually about protecting intellectual property. That wasn’t Dobelle’s problem. When I asked him about his reticence, his answer surprised me: “Jesus cured blindness. People don’t like it when mortals perform miracles.” It was an offhand comment, but one that stayed with me. Consider the enormous influence that our spiritual traditions exert in today’s world. Think about the blood that has been spilled in the name of religion in just these past hundred years. Think about the ongoing hubbub surrounding the—shall we say—“philosophical question” of millions of years of evolution, versus the more economic six-day approach. Now, think about what’s coming. Right now, researchers are storming heaven from every direction. In “Extreme States,” we’ll see how things like trance states, out-of-body experiences, and cosmic unity—all core mystical experiences that underpin our spiritual traditions—are now understood as the product of measurable biology. The hard science has been done; the disruptive technologies are what come next. So forget about science putting something as flimsy as “philosophical” pressure on religion—pretty soon the direct experience of the numinous is going to be available via video game. And that’s just the beginning of the storm. How many spiritual traditions rely on the premise of the hereafter to steer morality? Yet, as you’ll see in “The Genius Who Sticks Around Forever,” we are already poking at the possibility of downloadable consciousness—the idea that we can store self in silicon, loading consciousness onto a chip and loading that chip onto a computer, allowing us to hang on to our personalities forever—so what happens to morality in the face of immortality?

I am not a scientist and while I am at least familiar with most of the concepts approached in the book, I am far from well-read on these things; so I looked forward to getting informed on some important technological advances happening, and I was particularly intrigued by the idea of the author comparing these advances to what was predicted about them in science fiction books from decades past.I *did* learn a lot. About the scientific development - and challenges therein - of everything from flying cars to artificial vision implants, from psychedelic medicine to stem cell research, bionic limbs to genetically engineered creatures, etc. Kotler writes in a way that's both intelligent yet approachable - such that I believe professionals in these fields could be interested in his writings, yet lay people can understand them. He's witty at times yet utterly serious when such a tone is called for. I enjoyed his writing style, just as I did the content of the book.If I have a qualm it's that I wish he had done more with comparing science fiction predictions of yesterday with science facts of today. He does some of this here and there, but not enough of it and never with much detail. Because of the book's subtitle, I expected and hoped for a lot of specific examples of where old science fiction plotlines have become realities in today's world.Really, though, that's my only quibble and the problem I had there wasn't enough to keep me from thoroughly enjoying the book. I recommend it to anyone who feels they would be interested in an engaging look at where we are in our society today, with a variety of technological advances.

Edelman When I was a child, it looked like the future was almost here. Things that were once only found in science fiction books were becoming real. Men were flying rocket belts across stadiums and rocket ships into space. Giant electronic brains were being built. Nuclear power was revolutionizing the grid. New drugs were said to be cures for mental illness. The President promised we'd go to the moon before the end of the decade. Soon, I thought, we'd all be taking our personal jet packs and autogyros to the local spaceport, where we'd ride a rocket to a space station and spend our holidays exploring the solar system... Jump ahead to 2015: Diseases are still the bane of human kind, nuclear power gave us TMI and Chernobyl, and we're still stuck in low Earth orbit, and no one's set foot on the moon in 43 years. What happened? What happened,, says Steven Kotler, is that we have come a very long way since then. It's just that we took a slightly different route. Private space flight is a reality. Prosthetics are becoming more and more sophisticated, so that thee day of the Six Million Dollar Man is closer than we may think. People are seriously talking about mining asteroids. And nuclear power is due for a renaissance, with new designs that are self-limiting, generate almost zero waste, and would have been here decades ago if not for some very mistaken policies. The idea that we're now living in the world that science fiction predicted is the theme that holds together the essays in Tomorrowland, although for many of the pieces it's perhaps a bit of a stretch. The book consists of a series of magazine articles written over a period of close to two decades, covering stories at the leading edge, and sometimes the bizarre fringe, of science, medicine, and technology. None are terribly long, and consequently the science concerned tends to be somewhat glossed over; this is not a book that will fascinate those looking for deep explanations of the underlying physics of, say, brain chemistry or fission reactions in a thorium reactor. And Kotler's breezy writing style- think "Wired" magazine- can be perhaps a bit off-putting to those expecting a more somber discussion. But I think the more casual reader with an interest in science and technology will find it interesting reading throughout.

A weak example of a strong genre By Brian Connors Basically a bathroom reader of interesting science, I'd like this book more if it seemed a bit less credible and "this is gonna blow your mind" contrarian about some things. Some of this stuff -- environmentalists changing their minds about nuclear energy, for example -- isn't exactly obscure or mindblowing once you understand the reasons; the chapter on steroids, on the other hand, seems credulous and poorly written and is likely to give a lot of people the idea that OTC steroid use is just fine. The article on mind-uploading and the singularity borders on gee-whiz gibberish. Kotler strikes me as the embodiment of everything scientists hate about science journalism -- 90% correct, 10% completely off the rails, and it's hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.I normally like books like this. I thought I'd love this one. But as a longtime skeptic, this one leaves me lukewarm at best. If you must read it, double-check everything.
