Academic treatise By JAMES WAYNE JOHNSON Consuls and Res Publica is a collection of academic papers on the subject of the highest office in the Roman Republic. It explains how the office evolved and impacted the people whom elected them. It is well written and thoroughly researched, but not aimed at a general audience. Each chapter is authored by a different academic, as such each chapter stands on its own. However, the layout is well edited and flows logically. The consulate has been surprisingly ignored, in large part, so if you are an avid reader of the Roman Republic, this book is not a rehash of something you've already read. I would recommend this book to those who already have a comprehensive understanding of the Roman Republic, and a keen interest in the highest political office. If you know what the Cursus Honorum is, and can name the offices, this book might be for you...

McCarthy I'm a relatively new lawyer in PA who works as a general practitioner, so it can be difficult at times to keep track of every available claim and defense, especially for Pennsylvania-specific concepts such as the gist of the action doctrine or the Dragonetti Act.This book is extremely helpful and an absolute essential for anyone that has felt this same way. It is well organized, and acts as a checklist of sorts that not only sets forth the elements of each cause of action (as well as many defenses), but even provides the statute of limitations for each claim and provides the most recent or comprehensive case law to provide a starting-point for your own research. There are a few causes of action in here that many attorneys besides myself may not even realize are an option to raise, depending on the context. I have only had this book a short amount of time and it has already benefited me greatly in several cases. The employment discrimination and defenses sections are particularly good.I'm giving the book 5 stars because it really is just an easy-to-read and invaluable resource, but that doesn't mean it's perfect. First, it's a tad pricy--one would expect a voluminous tome for something over $250, but it's actually pretty thin. Which isn't a complaint as to its size. But the price is a little much--there should be an option to just purchase the book, and not the eBook.Second, there are a few causes of action that appear to be missing, unless I overlooked them: the book covers most of the UCC, but omits articles 7,8 and 9; the corporate opportunity doctrine is missing from the corporate section; name change petitions would be nice to include in the family law section; false light, the dog bite statute, and common law malicious prosecution for criminal cases are absent from the torts section; the wills and trusts section could be expanded on quite a bit, both with regards to actions against a trustee and with regards to intestate estates; and judicial estoppel is not mentioned in defenses.These are all minor quibbles, but if the authors aim to be comprehensive, they may want to consider including some of the above, particularly the torts and judicial estoppel. All in all, this is a great resource I would recommend to any attorney in Pennsylvania.

The idea of the separation of powers is still popular in much political and constitutional discourse, though its meaning for the modern state remains unclear and contested. This book develops a new, comprehensive, and systematic account of the principle. It then applies this new concept to legal problems of different national constitutional orders, the law of the European Union, and international institutional law. It connects an argument from normative political theory with phenomena taken from comparative constitutional law. The book argues that the conflict between individual liberty and democratic self-determination that is characteristic of modern constitutionalism is proceduralized through the establishment of different governmental branches. A close analysis of the relation between individual and collective autonomy on the one hand and the ways lawmaking through public institutions can be established on the other hand helps us identify criteria for determining how legislative, administrative, and judicial lawmaking can be distinguished and should be organized. These criteria define a common ground in the confusing variety of western constitutional traditions and their diverse use of the notion of separated powers. They also enable us to establish a normative framework that throws a fresh perspective on problems of constitutional law in different constitutional systems: constitutional judicial review of legislation, limits of legislative delegation, parliamentary control of the executive, and standing. Linking arguments from comparative constitutional law and international law, the book then uses this framework to offer a new perspective on the debate on constitutionalism beyond the state. The concept permits certain institutional insights of the constitutional experiences within states to be applied at the international level without falling into any form of methodological nationalism.

Sutter This is a dense and stimulating book about constitutional theory, written from a comparative point of view. Discussing not only national contexts but also the EU and general public international law arenas, it’s a rare examination of the meaning and purpose of splitting the powers of government among legislative, executive, and judiciary branches. The author (CM) is a leading German constitutional scholar who spent time studying and teaching in the US; this is an original work in quite clear English that elaborates on a couple of earlier works he had published in German. Even though most of the examples relate to a European or North American context, I found a lot to inform my thinking about the constitutional situation in Japan, where I live and teach.Despite the “checks and balances” narrative most Americans learn in school, that’s only one possible form for the separation of powers. As CM shows in Chap. 1, France, England, the US and Germany each exemplify a different style of separation. The theme that underlies them all is the tension between individual and democratic (collective) self-determination. Only a system that facilitates and guarantees both, says CM, can enjoy legitimacy. The judiciary tends mostly to protect individual freedom (since its main function is to consider cases involving individuals), a properly-functioning legislature exemplifies democratic freedom, and the task of the executive is to link the two. For CM the true rationale for the separation of powers “is not the repression and facilitation of political power, but rather the organization of a model of law-making in which individual and democratic matters of self-determination gain equal recognition” (@109).The discussion of legitimacy is approached from a general and philosophical perspective in Chap. 2, then applied in Chap. 3 to certain national-scale issues (including the regulation of administrative bureaucracy, dubbed by some other writers as the “fourth branch”), and then in Chap. 4 to the specific institutions of the EU, to issues of federalism generally, and also to public international law regimes such as the UN and WTO. A final chapter offers a brief and sometimes withering assessment of some other concepts, such as “governance,” that are floating around in the modern discourse about separation of powers.Note that the book focuses on systems that are considered to be democracies: it doesn’t discuss states such as China, the Soviet Union, most modern Middle Eastern states or military governments in Asia, even though most of those countries have constitutions that pay at least lip service to a three-branch structure; and despite the cover, Brazil is mentioned only once, in passing. Some of CM’s arguments, such as his concern about the democratic deficit when a dedicated constitutional court is very active in protecting the basic rights of individuals (@134-139), seemed shaped in response to the German situation — on the contrary, I think such a court might be a very welcome thing to have in Japan, for example. But CM emphasizes that he’s not proposing a “one-size-fits-all model” (@139), so the occasional German spin doesn’t reduce the usefulness of the book as a source of ideas for readers elsewhere.As mentioned above, CM’s argument is extremely dense, and I think impossible for most readers (myself included) to fully absorb on a first pass. While his writing style uses little jargon and usually avoids twisted syntax, it consists mostly of declarations made with confident certitude, one after another after another, without solicitous pauses for the reader who may have fallen off the pace — something like the first time I tried cross-country skiing, with a friend’s family who’d each been practicing the sport since childhood. Chapter 2, the most abstractly philosophical, was especially difficult for me to focus on, but it started to make more sense when I went back to it after having read the rest of the book.The book has a bibliography as well as true footnotes, not endnotes. (Though the tone of these usually matches the serious tone of the main text, I did enjoy one footnote's reference to "the continuously imprecise" 'State of Exception' by G. Agamben.) That it’s already two years since the book’s original publication without a single Amazon review nor, to the best of my knowledge, any comment in a US law journal or law prof blog is a testimony to the parochial mentality of the US legal academy, which is given to churning out books about “liberal democracies” (plural) based entirely on the jurisprudence of the US Supreme Court. I believe this book’s ideas and arguments are important, and deserve to be widely read and discussed. Suffice it to say: I’ve got books in almost every significant area of my home and office, but I’ve made a slot for this one on a shelf within arm’s reach of my desk.

About the Author

Daniel Limmer (Author). Dan Limmer, EMT-P, has been involved in EMS for over 25 years. He remains active as a paramedic with Kennebunk Fire Rescue in Kennebunk, Maine, and the Kennebunkport EMS (KEMS) in Kennebunkport, Maine. A passionate educator, Dan teaches EMT and paramedic courses at the Southern Maine Community College in South Portland, Maine, and has taught at the George Washington University in Washington, DC and the Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, New York. He is a charter member of the National Association of EMS Educators and a member of the National Association of EMTs (NAEMT) for which he serves on the Advanced Medical Life Support Committee.

Dan was formerly involved in law enforcement, beginning as a dispatcher and retiring as a police officer in Colonie, New York, where he received three command recognition awards as well as the distinguished service award (Officer of the Year) in 1987. During his 20-year law enforcement career he served in the communications, patrol, juvenile, narcotics, and training units.

In addition to authoring several EMS journal articles, Dan is co-author of a number of EMS textbooks for Brady including First Responder: A Skills Approach, Essentials of Emergency Care, Advanced Medical Life Support, the military and fire service editions of Emergency Care, and others. He speaks frequently at regional, state, and national EMS conferences.

Michael F. O'Keefe (Author). Mike O'Keefe, MS, EMT-P, became the Vermont EMS State Training Coordinator in 1989. He has a Master's degree in biostatistics and was an EMT-Intermediate for 16 years before becoming a paramedic 10 years ago.

Mike was chosen to participate in the development of all four U.S. Department of Tranpsortation National Standard EMS Curricula (for First Responders, EMT-Basics, EMT-Intermediates, and EMT-Paramedics). He was also on the steering committee that developed the Geriatric Education for Emergency Medical Services (GEMS) course for the American Geriatrics Society and coauthored a chapter of the textbook for that course.

Mike is co-author of the Brady text Essentials of Emergency Care and is a contributing writer to the Brady text Paramedic Care: Principles & Practice. He is very interested in promoting EMS research, particularly in rural areas. Mike is active as a volunteer EMS provider in northwestern Vermont and is a speaker at EMS conferences.

Edward T. Dickinson (Medical Editor). Edward T. Dickinson, MD, NREMT-P, FACEP, is currently Assistant Professor and Director of EMS Field Operations in the Department of Emergency Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in Philadelphia. He is Medical Director of the Malvern Fire Company, the Berwyn Fire Company, and the Township of Haverford paramedics in Pennsylvania. He is a residency-trained, board-certified emergency medicine physician who is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

Dr. Dickinson began his career in emergency services in 1979 as a firefighter-EMT in upstate New York. He has remained active in fire service and EMS for the past 25 years. He frequently rides with EMS units and has maintained his certification as a National Registry EMT-Paramedic.

He has served as medical editor for numerous Brady EMT-B and First Responder texts and is the author of Fire Service Emergency Care, and co-author of Emergency Care, Fire Service Edition, and Emergency Incident Rehabilitation. He is co-editor of ALS Case Studies in Emergency Care.

I think it is very fair and give you good facts. All most angry at the book by the end. I am not even halfway through it yet and I have learned so much. If you are looking for a book with more information on pregnancy and prenatal care instead of labor.

The author has absolutely no clue what they are talking about. When talking about venues for giving birth there are other options that were left out, and she says giving birth in a hospital has the advantage of being sent to the ER if there is an emergency. What?? That is not how hospitals work. She also says "In other methods such as CS, you can be still asleep with the effects of anesthesia, and drugged so much that you won’t even be aware of your surroundings, much less the first cry of your baby". These days C-section are done with spinal anesthesia and you are completely aware, you always remember the first cry of your baby despite the numbing of your lower half. I didn't get much further than that due to the ignorance and horrible writing skills of the author. How does this book have 5 stars?? This book is a complete joke and I want my money back!! If you want a good book on natural childbirth read Ina May Gaskin's book.

Dominic My wife and I have discussed that a natural childbirth is what we were absolutely focused on achieving, so when I stumbled on this book, I had to get it for my wife.The author guides the reader through the many facets of a natural child birth including; the stages of labor, the birthing process as well as the advantages and disadvantages.My wife particularly found the chapter on Preparing For Motherhood interesting and helpful. Here the author discusses how to prepare ahead of time, highlights the important vaccinations after birth and even the benefits of having an optimistic attitude.A great guide book for soon to be moms!

By Amazon Customer It must be very frustrating for someone having a missing relative and no wonder after reading this book it results amazing to me thinking that someone can actually disappear without a trace, I think it's a little creepy and sad at the same time, also I must admit that this book is very well told, the truth is these cases transmit much despair and intrigue, not knowing if one day can be resolved and found these people... I guess with some images or pictures of the missing might become a little more personal stories and create a more emotional link with the reader, but still think it's an excellent book, there are many cases documented, so there are many hours of suspense and good reading. 5 stars.

Good reading By Amazon Customer In the world in which we live there are 7 billion people, it seems very frightening that someone close to you disappear from one moment to another, it is interesting as how the clues are discovered and testimonies of witnesses appear, gradually you can develop a case, there are some cases very intriguing, since the disappearance of the Lindbergh these stories have become more popular than ever. Excellent reading, very good to read them to the children and avoid getting into trouble on the street.

Stunning, enjoyable and great collection of missing people By Agustin Quesada Sometimes we don't think how much people disappear everyday but it is very alarming numbers of people, who disappear for any reason, some of them turn up murdered, some willingly escaped their current lives, some kut run from theis problems and got another life. The families of people who have disappeared are constantly hoping that the public care enough if they happen to see them on the street. Really stunning reading, great work, I liked a lot this collection, and keep it for myself.

By Ava Tan This is a wonderful book with a detailed explanation of what is going on with your blood sugar, what you can do about it, and what "normal" is. This book tells you the best ways to manage and take control of your blood sugar. The book starts of with a really good description of what normal blood sugar is and how normal people metabolize food. I’ve never seen a better description in plain language that you can understand.

I was aware when I was still young bout this condition and I see Diabetes as an expensive maintenance and I instilled in my mind that I don't want to have this condition. After reading this book I was fully informed about blood sugar, what is insulin, what is glucose, symptoms/signs, proper diet and exercise to avoid this, and the difference of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia. I am quite alarmed if I have problems with my blood sugar because of my diabetic relatives, that is why when I saw this book I bought this right away and I'm glad I did so that I now have full knowledge, with the help of this book, and planning to share this with my relatives, especially the recipes which would be a great help.

A male in the nursing profession is always in the minority. For William Knight, his status as a male nurse opened the door to persecution he never expected. Prejudice, false accusations, and wrongful termination eventually led him to doubt the entire medical establishment, from his fellow nurses to renowned doctors to hospital administration. Through years of workplace tribulation, however, Knight never doubted the supremacy of patient rights and his own responsibility to stand up for those under his care.

Knight found his way into nursing in a roundabout way. An unfortunate brush with the legal system ended a promising career in transportation and had Knight looking for new options. He entered nursing with great intentions and a desire to serve, but reality quickly dashed his hopes for a fulfilling professional life. He witnessed heartbreaking negligence on the part of his colleagues, but when he stood up for helpless patients, backstabbing and rumormongering derailed him. As Knight struggled to rectify his own good intentions with the deceit around him, his dedication to the helpless only increased.

A Significant Advance in Singularity Scholarship By Ted Goertzel This volume is a significant advance in scholarship about the likelihood and nature of a forthcoming technological singularity. It hits the sweet spot between short-term trend extrapolation and Sci-Fi speculation to deconstruct and analyze the arguments for a tipping point or discontinuity in information technology that will transform the world as we know it.Many of the arguments here can be found in other places, but the collection is much more than the sum of its parts. It imposes a dialectical logic on the discussion whereby every essay is responded to with one or more critical essays. The introductory essay, which can be read free on amazon.com, raises a very well thought out set of questions that will define debate on the singularity for years to come. The essays that follow provide thoughtful, comprehensive and insightful answers to the questions.The skeptics are given more than ample opportunity to develop their arguments, which are then subjected to serious criticism. The criticisms are telling: many of the skeptics demolish straw men. They go to great pains to demonstrate that no one can "prove" the singularity with mathematical or logical certainty, something which none of the authors in the volume assert. Much of the skepticism is addressed to Ray Kurzweil's more popular work, rather than to the more careful state-of-the-art futurism in this volume. The skeptics are actually more "fideistic" (arguing from faith) than the scientists (I won't call them "believers") who do their best to assess the likelihood and nature of a singularity.The skeptics are perhaps most convincing on the issue of timing. But even here, the criticism applies more to Kurzweil's The Singularity is Near than to the essays in this book which have absorbed and incorporated the criticisms of Kurzweil. These essays admit what we don't know, but have the courage to make the most of what we do. They accept the challenge of predicting likely turning-points in the medium-term future of information technology, and of suggesting what we can do to prepare for them.
