Voros Economic globalization and the effects of communicating with electronic speed enables ethnic minorities making themselves visible and heard all over the world. Yet, research in minority education is scarce at best. With the recent waves of migrants settling in host countries and becoming sizable minorities there, education of minority children has become an increasingly relevant issue within the European Union.This book presents a good survey of the European minority language landscape and strategies for languages survival. After these it focuses on the status of the Hungarian language in Romania. The subject does not lend itself to easy simplifications and into reduction of well-defined categories. Because language is a major part of collective and national identity, -- in fact, in the Carpathian basin language is national identity -- losing the language is losing national identity.The case of the Hungarians in Romania shares more with populations who have found themselves a minority as a result of treaties and changing borders, (i.e. Sudeten Germans in the newly formed Czechoslovak Republic after WWI) not by virtue of migration. Hungarians in Romania are not migrants but a permanent population which has lived in the Carpathian Basin for over 1000 years; it was the reassignment of Transylvania to Romania as a result of the Treaty of Trianon (1920) which created their minority status. However, the educational problems that the Hungarian minority has experienced, does share similarities with that of migrant populations in other nations. Language maintenance, revitalization, and revival, research in stages of language shifts, and survey of minority language use in the electronic media are relevant issues discussed in this book.The book is written in a very readable style for anyone interested in minority education; it is beautifully produced, with colored maps included.
