Citizens of the Broken Compass is a collection of articles dealing with a range of topics from the theory of evolution to human rights. Intelligent yet accessible, it aims at promoting dialogue about the growing discrepancy between our technological achievements and our ethical sensitivities; proposing the ethical disorientation in society cannot be separated from the religious confusions stemming from a radical, fundamentalist view of Christianity.

Royster, Ph.D., Have This Mind: Supreme Happiness...and the Four Great Religions... Citizens of the Broken Compass by Jack Brush will sensitize the reader’s moral reflection on current issues, extend their understanding of current scientific frontiers, and clarify some of the widespread befuddled thinking about matters of contemporary religion and God. A careful reading will broaden and enhance one’s encounter with central and crucial issues in present-day America.Ten short chapters, each easily read in a single sitting, stimulate relevant reflection on ten contemporary issues. A culture-wide broken compass notwithstanding, citizens wanting information and engagement in the vital issues of today will find wise guidance here for relevant and effective argument and action. The following topics indicate something of the range, relevance, and immense value to be found in this profound book: retaining a healthy sense of self in the midst of ‘buy, buy, buy;’ how to think about changing views on marriage; ambiguities in murder and war; evolution in the natural and social worlds; science and religion, human rights; when individual and group interests diverge; and three especially insightful reflections on current issues in American religious life.Dr. Brush’s formal credentials for addressing these issues lie in his three earned degrees from Vanderbilt University (engineering, divinity, and philosophy) and a Ph.D. from the University of Zurich in Switzerland, where he continued as a professor of systematic theology. Equally important is the author’s stature as an informed citizen with a resolute sense of empathetic fairness.

By Richard Alan Bunch Review of Jack Brush’s Citizens of the Broken Compass: Ethical and Religious Disorientation in the Age of Technology This volume is an invitation, an invitation to thoughtfully consider some of the world wide issues that face us in our time. Here Professor Dr. Jack Brush, in a fair and balanced appraisal, considers topics for dialogue or even debate such as varieties of atheism (theoretical, practical, and religious), same-sex marriage, why Darwin is still a topic of debate and is it possible to be a scientist who is also justifiably religious, when does war become murder and what are the differences between a holy war, a just war, and an honorable war. Dr. Brush also distinguishes understandings between the scientific, the literary, and the historical when it comes to such topics as the Virgin birth. Is such a birth even possible? And how are we to understand it? Next, Brush deftly covers the differences between an abstract understanding of God (Einstein) and anthropomorphic understandings of God as in a religious text such as the Bible. He even takes into consideration Fritjof Capra’s Tao of Physics and how people need a scientific understanding of the world and a profound religious awareness to address current problems such as those in ecology. In addition, this invitation to dialogue considers why natural law (and the moral complicity of individuals) is so important and the issue of human rights, the good of the individual, and the common good. This volume brings together Dr. Brush’s impressively broad background in science, philosophy, and theology to this work. This slender volume encompasses issues that affect us all and, if your situation allows, this is definitely a book, especially if you were to buy one or for an entire class, you would find offers a memorable survey that will both enlighten and inspire.

Although I had some trouble understanding the concept of time as eternity, I enjoyed the challenge of viewing time in a new way. This book calls out for group discussion!
