Review

“This book takes a refreshing and original approach to an understanding of nephrology. The authors set out to use a Q&A framework to identify a handful of key messages and teaching points around 6 subdivisions of the field. … this is an excellent and refreshing text which would fit well on the shelf of any jobbing clinician, be that person practising in specialty medicine or in primary care.” (Dr. Roger Greenwood, Amazon.com, August, 2015)

“This excellent new textbook provides medical students and junior doctors with a valuable resource to allow them to gain an understanding of the key topics in renal medicine. … I would highly recommend this textbook to medical students, junior doctors or renal nurses and also as a useful teaching resource for educators.” (Samira Bell, Amazon.com, July, 2015)

“Mark Findlay and Christopher Isles have written a refreshingly concise primer in renal medicine. It is easy to read and logically organised, and it uses real-world cases to raise and answer clinically relevant questions. … Use this book and you will not go wrong. No longer can non-nephrologists claim that renal medicine is just too difficult. For those of us who teach, Findlay and Isles have set the bar high.” (Donal J. O’Donoghue, British Journal of Renal Medicine, Vol. 20 (3), 2015)

The authors set out to use a Q&A framework to identify a handful of key messages and teaching points around 6 subdivisions of the field. This works extremely well in that it forces the authors to pick out key management issues needed for medical practice while setting aside some of the rare and esoteric concepts of traditional nephrology texts which tend to be cluttered with deep physiology, vanishingly rare conditions and circumstances. While written to educate medical students and junior doctors it comes across to me as a very useful, user-friendly reference text for primary care physicians and for those of us in secondary care who can momentarily find themselves behind the curve of modern developments. The authors have managed to grasp the essentials of all 6 divisions. This is certainly achieved in ‘The Challenges of Renal Replacement Therapy in the Elderly’ by the skilful use of simple language and by contrasting the health challenges faced by the elderly with and without renal failure to clarify this heavily nuanced area of care. Similarly, complex subjects such as myeloma and HUS/TPP are dealt with in an expert way to produce the same result – an easily digested summary divided into 10 to 14 ‘questions’. The short chapter on cardio-renal failure is up-to-date, practical and dispels some of the myths and uneccessary complexities around this common, lethal and often unrecognised condition. The figures throughout this text are as simple as they can be, yet clear and informative with minimal redundancy of information. In summary, this is an excellent and refreshing text which would fit well on the shelf of any jobbing clinician, be that person practising in specialty medicine or in primary care.Dr Roger GreenwoodConsultant NephrologistEast and North Herts NHS TrustStevenage, UKJuly 2015

An excellent, concise nephrology resource By Dr Samira Bell This excellent new textbook provides medical students and junior doctors with a valuable resource to allow them to gain an understanding of the key topics in renal medicine. The chapters cover a wide range of important areas of nephrology and are structured in question and answer format. Simple diagrams and case reports are used effectively to provide clear and concise explanations throughout. Topics covered are relevant to everyday practice with up-to-date evidence and guidelines forming the basis of the content. Complex topics such as acid base disorders and glomerular diseases are explained clearly focussing on the important aspects.I would highly recommend this textbook to medical students, junior doctors or renal nurses and also as a useful teaching resource for educators.Samira Bell
