"Only for the most select and most balanced minds does it seem possible to guard the perceived picture of external reality against the distortion to which it is otherwise subjected in its transit through the psychic individuality of the one perceiving it." - Sigmund Freud

Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) is known around the world as the "Father of Psychoanalysis", and for good reason. If anything, Freud's first patient was himself. A sufferer of psychosomatic symptoms, Freud diagnosed himself as having a repressed antagonism against his father. From there, Freud began to build on his now famous concepts of the unconscious, infantile sexuality and repression. And of course, there's his famous theory on the structure of the mind, which has made Id and Ego a commonly used part of the English lexicon.

In addition to all but creating a new field of science, Freud also contributed to entire industries. One of the first to try to analyze dreams, Freud's work has led patients in search of psychological explanations for various physical and mental symptoms and phenomena. The Interpretation of Dreams is Sigmund Freud's best known work, focusing on his theory of the unconscious with respect to dream interpretation. To Freud, dreams represented the unconscious attempt to fulfill some sort of wish, either by resolving a conflict or bringing certain memories to the surface.

And as a practitioner for many years, Freud wrote voluminously about his theories during the early 20th century, and his work tied in to a countless number of aspects concerning life and the mind.

INTERESTING, VERY INTERESTING By Vickie Woodard I won't pretend to be an expert in psychology, though I did learn how to work with young teenagers and once stopped a fight by throwing a full glass of water on the two combatants. ( I was pregnant; it would have been stupid to get between them. Besides, I warned them I would throw water on them if they didn't stop.)Freud worked in the mental world, not the physical world. He is credited with being the Father of Psychoanalysis, and it all started by dissecting eels, looking for testicles. Yeah, I didn't believe that the first time I read it either, though I do believe testicles do influence the way some people think. This book will not only give you the history of Freud's family, but trace the way his thinking developed.Would you believe he actually used and endorsed the use of cocaine in his first years of practice? Well, as I understand it he wasn't alone. And it reminded me that thumb sucking was a sexual activity (according to Freud); that means my second child, who was born with a blister on her left thumb from sucking it in utero, was having a jolly old time in there (according to Freud). Yes, I know I said it twice. I somehow can't believe it.She sucked her thumb till she was 2, when we told her she couldn't come out of her room to play if she was sucking her thumb. She stopped immediately. She was the only one of my three children who didn't wear braces. But Freud also gave us the term Penis Envy. Several famous people have a few things to say about THAT.Several of Freud's terms were on the nose, still used today. All of his research is important, either because it proves or disproves something. The terms he invented: Ego, Id, Superego, Oedipus Complex : are still in use today. His best selling book is about dream therapy. Betcha I could walk into any bookstore and pick up a dozen different books on how to interpret dreams. His family was lucky to have people get them out of Hitler's Europe. His life ended almost as it began; I'll let you read about that- I hate spoiling endings. But if you're interested in the development of what was then a new science, this is the book for you. Don't read it all at once. Take your time with it. And remember that this man created something remarkable over a century ago, a science with no exact answer because of the human equation.

Good Introduction By Michael Lapelosa Sigmund Freud is known around the world as the "Father of Psychoanalysis," Freud introducted the concepts of the unconscious, infantile sexuality and repression, and the Id and Ego. The author points our that he created an entirely field of science, as well as dream analysis. he Interpretation of Dreams is Sigmund Freud's best known work, focusing on his theory of the unconscious with respect to dream interpretation. This book simplifies Freud's somewhat complex theories and makes them understandable to the layman.

Bummer because I thought I was getting somewhere. It's like the author set up the scene and then didn't tell the whole story. I'm dangling and now and I won't survive the, worst disaster!!! Suggest the author rename the book intro to prepping and add more detailed content.

What are you thinking? My copy is the 23rd printing! What does that tell you about it? It is unfortunate for today's officers that this series is out of print. This is part of a three book series. The other two are Tactics for Criminal Patrol and The Tactical Edge. These texts were referenced as a source for some of the training at the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy as of the winter of 2000. I'll grant you that the photos and stories are old, but no less important in the lessons they teach. This book was not meant to be a coffee table reader (graphic photos and text). It (and its two companion texts) were meant to keep cops alive. Well, so far I haven't died! This may not be the end all, be all of tactics manuals, but it is good. It survived in print for at least 19 years. The publisher went under sometime in the last decade. This is a classic in its field.

Engedal "A must for Law enforcement officers.,,This book deals with the positive tactics officers can employ on the street to effectively use thier own firearms to defeat those of assailants. Over 400 detailed reports of OIS's and over 50 agencies surveyed." Satisfaction ensured. No dust cover.. Thank you..

Worth a read, even if you're not a LEO By Patch I bought this book in the hopes that, as a concealed weapons holder, there might be some useful bits to learn. As expected, though, the book is heavily centered on techniques and procedures that I would never encounter. Nonetheless, the book is a fascinating read on why police officers behave the way that they do, with numerous examples of police officers who died when they let their judgment lapse. The downside is this book is very out of date. Published in 1980, the book could use an update that includes more modern procedures and weapons usage. Regardless, it's worth a read by anyone in the law enforcement field.

This is not a “read it and remember it” book. This is a manual with descriptions of how the way you exercise will affect the results you get. Expect to use this book as a reference for what will happen if you changed your routine slightly; or how to change your routine to get slightly different results. The first thing that struck me about this book is that there must be a good demand to warrant a “3rd edition”. After reading through it I can see the attraction in that this book contains verifiable facts, backed by comparative studies on the relevant target audience. No generalizations are made; the authors demonstrate with impressive statistics: which exercises work best (for whichever format you prefer--free weights, machines, or any alternative equipment), in which order you should do the exercises, how many reps/set work best, how many sets per session, how much time to rest between reps, when/how to breath during sets, how quickly/slowly to do your reps, how many times a week to workout, etc. Every “trivial” question I’ve always wanted to ask is answered here. Depending on how much time during the week you want to devote to exercising they give you a routine for it: a short routine for the most important muscle groups, and longer routines for a more ambitious program (including an Advanced Training chapter, if you’re really into strength training and want to know how you can push yourself a bit further and without overdoing it).For what it’s worth, what this book does not provide is a strong emotional incentive for working out. Other books I’ve read devote as much as half the book to “stoking you up” to pump iron; getting you excited and raring to go. The one chapter in this book on the benefits of strength training focuses on the proven physical and mental reasons for making the effort, with a longer list of benefits than I’ve ever seen before (I’ve never seen anyone talk about the studies showing that strength training helps fight cancer!) For my part, that’s all to the good—the quick emotional high just as quickly fades once you hit the weights. But it’s much more difficult to ignore the 73 medical studies (including bar charts showing the quantitative results of some of the studies) that demonstrate exactly what you can expect from your efforts. Here’s a brief sample of the kinds of studies that are used to justify this book: “The impact of resistance exercise on the cognitive function of the elderly;” “Comparison of two versus three days per week of variable resistance training during 10 and 18 week programs;” “Strength training for treatment of osteoarthritis of the knee;” “Strength-training research: sets and repetitions”.The exercises themselves are indexed at the front of the book by muscle group/type of exercise/page number. The individual exercises are described with no more than one exercise per page (or 2-pages if necessary) with graphic illustrations of how to position yourself for the exercise and how to perform the exercise (how to do the first part of the muscle movement—whether it’s up, down, forward, backward—and then how to do the return half of the muscle movement). This takes 110 pages of the book.Other chapters deal with specific exercises for specific sports: swimming, running, cycling, skiing, golfing, etc. And, of course, there’s a chapter on nutrition. The “take-away” for me is that I’ve lost my fear of “wasting my time with no results.” I now KNOW that if I do even the minimal routines recommended here I’m guaranteed results. And the "bottom line" has been affirmed: for results, you need to push the muscles to "failure".

Great for older beginning strength trainers By James Pyles I’ve had a chance to go through the book "Strength Training Past 50, 3rd edition" by Wayne Westcott and Thomas R. Baechle (I picked up a copy in the New Books section of my local public library the other day). I’m a pretty fast reader, and the elementary nature of the book, plus the plethora of illustrative photos it contains makes it really easy to shoot through. However if you are new to strength training and need to learn the details, you might want to give this a slower read.To start off with, the front of the book contains a really handy exercise finder chart of exactly what each machine, free weight, alternate equipment exercises work on your body, including whether they’re single or multi-joint.Chapter 1 gives a good introduction on the different benefits strength training provides for people over 50. This should be your motivation section.I won’t go into all the reasons you, the person past age 50, should do some form of strength training, but here’s one startling fact: By the time the average person reaches age 50, generally they will have lost 15 pounds of muscle and gained 45 pounds of fat. This is due to the natural (for a sedentary person) attrition of muscle mass plus the reduction in body metabolism as we age, so it’s not that you have to eat all that much more than when you were younger to get to this condition.Don’t worry. There’s hope. Here’s the short list of what strength training can do for an older person.1.Rebuild muscle2.Recharge metabolism3.Reduce fat4.Reduce resting blood pressure5.Improve blood lipid profiles6.Enhance postcoronary performance7.Resist diabetes8.Increase bone density9.Decrease physical discomfort10.Enhance mental health11.Revitalize muscle cells12.Reverse physical frailty13.Combat cancerYou’ll have to read the book to get the details, but I’ve covered a few of these topics in previous blog posts. The next chapter gets the beginner started with an assessment of readiness for strength training, including different exercises you can do which should tell you where you are in terms of physical abilities relative to exercise. I should stress here that consulting with your doctor or other medical professional is a really good idea before starting any workout program. The book is very accessible for the newbie and covers how to get started, which exercises to begin with, training frequency, exercise sets and loads, rest, and progression. It then outlines the basics of equipment, with details on different free weights, weight machines, and alternative equipment, including their cost should you desire to put your own home gym together (some of this stuff can be really pricey). There’s a chapter on the basics of technique including lifting fundamentals. The book offers lots of step-by-step instructions and plenty of photos of older people (no young bodies in skimpy clothing…I was pleased) to illustrate machine exercises “how-tos” for all the common machines in the gym.The following chapter does the same with free weights,I paid particular attention to the page on barbell back squat instructions. Very basic. Nowhere near as detailed as Starrett in his "Becoming a Supple Leopard" tome, but this is a book for beginners and each exercise is covered to the same depth with just the essential starter techniques presented. That said, the pages contain pretty much every lift with free weights you could imagine, at least from what I could tell in a brief run through. This part is the core of the book, and also offers the same level of detail for alternative exercises with exercise balls, resistance bands, and body weight.Afterward, you get into a chapter listing the details of different workout routines, applying all that was presented in the previous chapters for different weights (free, machine, alternative). First is a chapter on basic routines, and then the next is on advanced programs. The following chapter provides outlines on which workouts help you train for specific sports including running, cycling, tennis, skiing, and golf if you’re so inclined. The final chapter is on nutrition and confirms (my wife is dubious about this) that people over 50 should increase their protein intake. For folks in their 60s to gain muscle mass, according to the authors, we need to ingest about 1.5 grams per kg of body weight because we don’t process protein (amino acids) as effectively as when we were younger. They don’t go crazy in their advice. The average recommended protein intake for my age group (60-69), not taking body weight into account, is 90 grams (75 for women in the same age group).Lots and lots of medical research citations with references pages at the conclusion of the book. This makes sense because the authors, Wayne Westcott and Thomas Baechle, come with rather impressive resumes (Google them to read about their qualifications).Yes, this is a book on strength training, so I didn’t expect, nor did I find any reference to the role of cardio. That could mean the authors don’t find it necessary, since strength training is supposed to jack up your metabolism, or that it’s just not relevant in a book focused on resistance exercises.I also found no index, which was disappointing. If I wanted to see if there were pages on a particular detail (cardio, for instance), an index would have been quite convenient.Bottom line: If you are someone age 50 or older who wants to know why strength training is really important to you and what do to about it but you don’t know where to begin, this book covers everything you’ll need to know to make informed decisions and construct a training program that’s right for you. As you advance, you’ll probably want to consult more detailed and specified resources, but the Westcott and Baechle book will definitely get you started. The authors do have a short section on selecting a personal trainer if you want to go that way, and there’s plenty of information on either joining a gym or making one at home, so you can either select something “guided” or go completely DIY (do-it-yourself).

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Get Lifting! By Mike The newest edition of Strength Training past 50 has been updated with twenty more exercises (83 versus 63 in the 2nd edition). Also many new professional references have been added to reflect current research. Both authors are well-known experts in the exercise and weightlifting fields. Westcott, a fitness director for the YMCA and strength training consultant, has authored or co-authored twenty fitness books and more than 300 professional articles. Baechle is an Exercise Science professor & chairperson for Creighton University, Executive Director of the National Strength & Conditioning Association and a United States Weightlifting Coach. The Exercise Finder tables in the beginning of the book make it easy to locate which body part you want to work on, which exercise to do (using machines, free weights or alternative equipment) and a page number to go to for more information. Assessment activities and rankings are included in chapter 2 so you can get a current baseline of fitness and know what to aim for.Other chapters include; applying the principles of training, learning basic exercise techniques, specific machine and free-weight exercises, basic and advanced training programs and sport-specific programs. The photographs are clear, black & white and include men and women performing the exercises. Exercise techniques are simple yet complete. Athletes, whether novice, intermediate or advanced will find useful information in this book. The workout plans in the later chapters are worth the price alone, though the rest of the book is filled with great information.

Pain Medicine approaches the management of common chronic pain conditions using a unique interdisciplinary approach focusing on multiple facets of patients' clinical presentations. The comprehensive discussions in each chapter are centered on a vignette that mimics a fairly typical case presentation. In addition to detailed classical descriptions of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, prognosis, and confounding psychosocial factors of each disease entity, the text provides various interdisciplinary management approaches. The case-based approach illustrates key clinical points and demonstrates how practitioners from a variety of disciplines can work together to deliver optimal patient care. The ACGME criteria for fellowship training in Pain Medicine calls for an interdisciplinary approach, with required training and exposure to the fields of Anesthesiology, Neurology, Psychiatry, and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation. As this trend is occurring in private pain clinics and practices as well as in academic institutions, there is a need for a volume which integrates the approaches of the various disciplines into a coherent whole to guide clinicians and trainees in the interdisciplinary management of pain. With each chapter authored by respected experts in the key specialties involved with pain management, Pain Medicine is a highly applicable clinical reference for practitioners, an excellent anchor text for fellows and residents in training, and a thorough review for initial board certification as well as maintenance of certification exams.

Review "This is an attempt to fill a gap in case-based pain management. Similar types of books are available in other fields of medicine, but this a first in the field of pain. The chapters are well written, the approach to the disease process is outlined in a very systematic way, and management strategies are logically presented. It's a nice refresher course in pain medicine that would be a nice addition to anyone's library." -- Doody's

"The adventures in pain medicine are written with a consistent style devoid of errors. They lead the reader along a logical path through the diagnostic process to a satisfactory conclusion. I found the volume engaging, educational, and entertaining... It is an easy volume to navigate... The opinions are balanced, and usually with good supporting evidence... Is this, a textbook, reference volume, or just a darn good read? I think it is all of the above. It certainly achieves its goal of presenting interdisciplinary information on common pain syndromes in an engaging and clinically relevant format. Every pain practitioner who reads this volume will achieve insights that are not usually presented in conventional texts and then will be able to provide a more comprehensive approach to day-to-day clinical problems." --Pain Medicine

The Tantras of Vajrasattva’s Magnificent Sky, also known as the Unfailing Royal Insignia, come to us in manuscript traditions, books copied through the centuries, from Tibet and Bhutan. The texts are translations attributed to Vairochana, a famous translator of the eighth century, a Tibetan who went to India in search of the literature on instantaneous enlightenment, found it, and brought it back to Tibet. The original Indian texts have been lost in time. Vairochana’s translations fill many volumes, but he is most famous for translating the Ngagyur Nga (snga ‘gyur lnga): The Five Early Translations. These are The Cuckoo of Awareness, Shaking off the Grand Search, The Soaring of the Magnificent Garuda, Meditating on the Bodhicitta, and the Unfailing Royal Insignia: The Magnificent Sky. I have already translated and published Vairochana’s own teachings on these five Tantras. The teachings on the Magnificent Sky are said to be oceanic in proportion. What we have, in terms of surviving manuscript traditions, is fifteen individual titles. Basically, there are three Root Tantras, five Embellished Tantras, two Tantras associated with the Heart of Secrets, the Guhyagarbha, and a set of fifty-five verses that are found under various titles, and which constitute chapter 30 of the Kun byed rGyal po. I have already published a translation of one Root Tantra in this set: The Unborn. There remain two Root Tantras: Effulgent Vajra Light and Vajrasattva’s Magnificent Sky. Both are translated here. The Embellished Tantras are: The Unwritten, For the King, For the Brahmins, For the Yogins, and for the Yoginis. The first three of these are translated in the book you now hold. The two Tantras connected to the Guhyagarbha will be published in an upcoming volume. How do these teachings fit into the Buddhist tradition? Generally speaking, the vast array of the Buddha’s teachings is divided up in many different ways, depending on the objectives of different schools and individuals. We often hear of the division between the Hinayana and the Mahayana, where a concern for personal liberation characterizes the first and an enlightened attitude based on great compassion for all sentient beings characterizes the latter. We hear of a division between the approach of the Sutras and the approach of the Tantras, where the first represents the practical approach of a gradual search for enlightenment through the development of generosity, rules, patience, perseverance, meditation, and wisdom, while the approach of the Tantras is usually based on a deity yoga in which special methods are employed in the hope of rapid enlightenment. The Tantras of the Magnificent Sky belong to a special class of Tantra, the Great Perfection, which does not employ deity yoga, rejects practices of visualization, and recommends instantaneous enlightenment. For those who follow the Ancient Traditions of Tibetan Buddhism, the Nyingma, this is the highest and most profound Buddhist teaching. The schools of Buddhism in Tibet that are known as the New Schools, or Sarma, did not recognize the instantaneous approach as a true Buddhist teaching. The primary difference in opinion is that the New Schools insist that our progress toward enlightenment is a gradual process, while the Great Perfection teaches that enlightenment is instantaneous. We might say that while all the other pathways offered by Buddhism teach about becoming enlightened, the Great Perfection teaches about being enlightened. The Tantras of the Magnificent Sky are profound expressions of this approach.

Secret Sky: The Ancient Tantras on Vajrasattva's Magnificent Sky, by Christopher Wilkinson

About the Author Christopher Wilkinson began his career in Buddhist literature at the age of fifteen, taking refuge vows from his guru Dezhung Rinpoche. In that same year he began formal study of Tibetan language at the University of Washington under Geshe Ngawang Nornang and Turrell Wylie. He became a Buddhist monk, for three years, at the age of eighteen, living in the home of Dezhung Rinpoche while he continued his studies at the University of Washington. He graduated in 1980 with a B.A. degree in Asian Languages and Literature and another B.A. degree in Comparative Religion (College Honors, Magna Cum Laude, Phi Beta Kappa). After a two year tour of Buddhist pilgrimage sites throughout Asia he worked in refugee resettlement programs for five years in Seattle, Washington. He then proceeded to the University of Calgary for an M.A. in Buddhist Studies where he wrote a groundbreaking thesis on the Yangti transmission of the Great Perfection tradition titled “Clear Meaning: Studies on a Thirteenth Century rDzog chen Tantra.” He proceeded to work on a critical edition of the Sanskrit text of the 20,000 line Perfection of Wisdom in Berkeley, California, followed by an intensive study of Burmese language in Hawaii. In 1990 he began three years’ service as a visiting professor in English Literature in Sulawesi, Indonesia, exploring the remnants of the ancient Sri Vijaya Empire there. He worked as a research fellow for the Shelly and Donald Rubin Foundation for several years, playing a part in the early development of the Rubin Museum of Art. In the years that followed he became a Research Fellow at the Centre de Recherches sur les Civilisations de l'Asie Orientale, Collège de France, and taught at the University of Calgary as an Adjunct Professor for five years. He has published several volumes of translations of Tibetan literature, and is currently engaged in further translations of classic Buddhist literature.
