INTERESTING, VERY INTERESTING By Vickie Woodard I won't pretend to be an expert in psychology, though I did learn how to work with young teenagers and once stopped a fight by throwing a full glass of water on the two combatants. ( I was pregnant; it would have been stupid to get between them. Besides, I warned them I would throw water on them if they didn't stop.)Freud worked in the mental world, not the physical world. He is credited with being the Father of Psychoanalysis, and it all started by dissecting eels, looking for testicles. Yeah, I didn't believe that the first time I read it either, though I do believe testicles do influence the way some people think.This book will not only give you the history of Freud's family, but trace the way his thinking developed.Would you believe he actually used and endorsed the use of cocaine in his first years of practice? Well, as I understand it he wasn't alone.And it reminded me that thumb sucking was a sexual activity (according to Freud); that means my second child, who was born with a blister on her left thumb from sucking it in utero, was having a jolly old time in there (according to Freud). Yes, I know I said it twice. I somehow can't believe it.She sucked her thumb till she was 2, when we told her she couldn't come out of her room to play if she was sucking her thumb. She stopped immediately. She was the only one of my three children who didn't wear braces.But Freud also gave us the term Penis Envy. Several famous people have a few things to say about THAT.Several of Freud's terms were on the nose, still used today. All of his research is important, either because it proves or disproves something. The terms he invented: Ego, Id, Superego, Oedipus Complex : are still in use today. His best selling book is about dream therapy. Betcha I could walk into any bookstore and pick up a dozen different books on how to interpret dreams.His family was lucky to have people get them out of Hitler's Europe. His life ended almost as it began; I'll let you read about that- I hate spoiling endings.But if you're interested in the development of what was then a new science, this is the book for you. Don't read it all at once. Take your time with it. And remember that this man created something remarkable over a century ago, a science with no exact answer because of the human equation.

Good Introduction By Michael Lapelosa Sigmund Freud is known around the world as the "Father of Psychoanalysis," Freud introducted the concepts of the unconscious, infantile sexuality and repression, and the Id and Ego. The author points our that he created an entirely field of science, as well as dream analysis. he Interpretation of Dreams is Sigmund Freud's best known work, focusing on his theory of the unconscious with respect to dream interpretation. This book simplifies Freud's somewhat complex theories and makes them understandable to the layman.
