Excerpt from Life of Roger Brooke Taney: Chief Justice of the United States Supreme CourtThe presence of four men in Maryland secured in that State the success of the sympathizers with the Union in 1861. Three of these men were politicians and lawyers: John Pendleton Kennedy, Reverdy Johnson, and Henry Winter Davis. The fourth was a jurist - Roger Brooke Taney. The life of Kennedy was written by Tuckerman and needs not to be written again. Those of Johnson and Davis it has been the privilege of the author of this work to write. The life of Taney has been written by Samuel Tyler and was published in 1872. That portly volume is invaluable to every student of Taney's life, both because the author was a friend of the chief justice and gathered information which would otherwise have been lost and because the book contains a very valuable autobiography of Taney's early years. Yet the book was styled by a contemporary reviewer, as a "panegyric rather than a biography," was written uncritically, is nearly fifty years old, did not include the information now to be gained from Taney's correspondence with President Jackson, and involved no full discussion of the subject's place as a jurist. A states right justice By Jean “Life of Roger Brooke Taney: Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court” by Bernard Christian Steiner was published in 1922. I read this as an e-book and I found a formatting error quite annoying. The footnotes are scattered throughout the page and the numerical numbers of the index are large size in the text. I am unsure how they put the book into digital format whether by scanning or transcribing but it does make reading the book difficult. The writing style is old fashion and I think some of the sentences were a direct quote from even much older biographies or documents and the style even more old fashion.Roger Brook Taney (1877-1864) was the fifth Chief Justice of the Supreme Court (1836-1864) He was the eleventh United States Attorney General (1831-1833) and was also Secretary of the Treasury from 1833 -1834. Taney was a Jacksonian Democrat; he was a believer in State-Rights but also of the Union. Taney was slaveholder who manumitted his slaves. Taney was the first Catholic appointed to the Supreme Court. Taney was born in Maryland the second son of seven children. According to tradition of the time the plantation would go to the eldest son. Therefore Taney father told him to get an education to be able to support himself. Taney graduated from Dickinson College. He read the law and was admitted to the bar in 1799. He quickly became one of Maryland’s most promising lawyers. Taney’s law partner was Francis Scott Keyes, and he married Keyes sister. He was elected a State Senator in 1815 serving until 1821. He was elected Attorney General of Maryland but resigned in 1831 to become acting U. S. Secretary of war. He was then appointed as Attorney General of the United States by President Jackson. As A.G. he supported South Carolina’s law prohibiting Free Blacks from entering the State. When he became Secretary of the Treasury he ordered an end to the deposit of Federal money in the Second Bank of the United States, an act which killed the institution.As Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court he followed President Jackson’s philosophy of favoring the power of the State. This is the opposite of John Marshall who had supported a broad role for the federal government in areas of economic regulation. The Taney Court presided over the case of slaves who had taken the Spanish Schooner Amistad. The attorney representing the slaves was John Quincy Adams. Adams won. In Prigg v Pennsylvania 1842 the Taney Court imposed a positive duty on states to enforce federal fugitive slave laws. Taney argued constitutional guarantee of slave holders rights to ownership. The most famous case heard by the Taney Court was the Dred Scott v Sanford case (1857). Taney decision is considered to have indirectly been a cause of the Civil war. He declared the 1820 Missouri Compromise unconstitutional and the pro-slavery ruling that deemed blacks were not citizens of the United States nor could be.President Jackson appointed 6 justices to the Supreme Court and 18 Judges to the United States District Courts. In 1863 the number of Justices of the Supreme Court was increased to nine. In his role as Chief Justice Taney administered the Oath of Office to President Abraham Lincoln. According to the author at the end of Taney’s life he was despised by both the North and the South. He died October 13, 1864 at the age of 87. He had served 28 years as the 5th Chief Justice. Steiner points out that modern legal scholars have tended to state Taney was an outstanding jurist and a competent judicial administrator but the Dred Scott decision and his standing on slavery has tainted his legacy. There is a statue of Taney standing on the grounds of the Maryland State House. You can visit the “Taney Place” in Adelina, Calvert County Maryland. I watched the Little League World Series games from Williamsport Pa. (August 2014) and noted the team from Philadelphia was called Taney. They named the team from the street in front of the park they played baseball in. The street was named after Roger Taney. I also noted that most of the players were black and the team that knocked them out of running for the championship was an all black team from Chicago. I would also guess that most of the kids and their parents are citizens of the United States. I read this as an e-book via my Kindle app for my iPad.

It is SUPER healthy, loaded with filling fiber, absorb the flavor of everything, the texture kicks rear, and it is grainy and fun to eat. You can add it to everything. I seriously mean everything. I, myself, have even made potato-ish salads using quinoa instead. Delicious. Quinoa can substitute everything, from rice, to potatoes, I mean, everything. I loved this book because of the recipes and because it really can give you shortcuts for weightloss that I didn't think about before. I think it is worth reading and putting together in your recipe book. Quinoa is a wonderful (I'll say it again, wonderful) substitute to simple carbs, and this book is awesome!

By Jean Richards I remember the first time I tried quinoa, I was skeptical to even try it, but a friend told me how great it was and I ended up loving it. I love the way Ms. Perth has broken down the sections in 110 easy to read, easy to follow chapters. Great explanations are included with the sections. I never realized how packed full of vitamins and minerals quinoa was. The author gives great tips and suggestions on how to use quinoa and what it goes great with. She includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and snack suggestions, which I am saving and plan on doing with my own meals. She even includes face masks and hair treatments that you can do using quinoa.

While her text begins with reminiscences about her childhood in chattel bondage, at the heart of her work is the power struggle between black women domestic workers and their white female employers. The last half of the narrative relies heavily upon speeches, poems, and hymns written by others that stirred Annie's religious passions and increased her pride in her heritage, including a very powerful speech by Dr. P. Thomas Stanford.

Memories of Childhood's Slavery Days is not only one woman's quest from slavery to physical freedom but also her journey from a proscribed role to the creation of own free identity.

About the Author Annie L. Burton (born c. 1858) was an African-American memoirist. She was born into slavery on a plantation near Clayton, Alabama. Her date of death is uncertain. Her life's story is captured in her 1909 autobiography Memories of Childhood's Slavery Days. In her autobiography Burton relates that the end of slavery not only signaled a time for African Americans to start a new life, but also a time to redefine their lives. "Burton's Memories details not only one woman's quest from slavery to physical freedom but also her journey from a proscribed role to the creation of own free identity."

Compton Interesting look at a young slave girl that was freed at the end of the Civil War while still a child and before anything bad happened to her. The author gave an interesting narrative of slave children and white children playing together while very young.Her experiences after the Civil War ended, are as interesting as her experiences while it was going on.I recommend this little gem to anyone interested in that era of American History.
