Creeks and Southerners examines the families created by the hundreds of intermarriages between Creek Indian women and European American men in the southeastern United States during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Called “Indian countrymen” at the time, these intermarried white men moved into their wives’ villages in what is now Florida, Georgia, and Alabama. By doing so, they obtained new homes, familial obligations, occupations, and identities. At the same time, however, they maintained many of their ties to white American society and as a result entered the historical record in large numbers. Creeks and Southerners studies the ways in which many children of these relationships lived both as Creek Indians and white Southerners. By carefully altering their physical appearances, choosing appropriate clothing, learning multiple languages, embracing maternal and paternal kinsmen and kinswomen, and balancing their loyalties, the children of intermarriages found ways to bridge what seemed to be an unbridgeable divide. Many became prominent Creek political leaders and warriors, played central roles in the lucrative deerskin trade, built inns and taverns to cater to the needs of European American travelers, frequently moved between colonial American and Native communities, and served both European American and Creek officials as interpreters, assistants, and travel escorts. The fortunes of these bicultural children reflect the changing nature of Creek-white relations, which became less flexible and increasingly contentious throughout the nineteenth century as both Creeks and Americans accepted a more rigid biological concept of race, forcing their bicultural children to choose between identities.

Creeks and Southerners: Biculturalism on the Early American Frontier (Indians of the Southeast), by Andrew K. Frank

Review “While Frank skillfully contextualizes his story within Creek and colonial history, his focus is on the people who, like Cornell, were Creeks and white southerners. . . . Elegantly written, impeccably organized, and deeply researched in English and Spanish sources, Creeks and Southerners is a welcome addition to the booming field of pre-removal Creek history.”—Kathleen DuVal, Western Historical Quarterly (Kathleen DuVal Western Historical Quarterly 2006-12-19)"An interesting source for studying the effects of early biculturalism."—Denver Westerners Roundup (Doris R. Meredith Denver Westerners Roundup 2005-12-06)"Creeks and Southerners is a sophisticated, well-written account of Creek society in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.  Frank draws on . . . many fascinating frontier characters [relating them] to the larger forces forging a new social landscape around them."—Gregory A. Waselkov, Alabama Review (Gregory A. Waselkov Alabama Review 2006-05-08)"Creeks and Southerners provides useful insight into the formation of Creek identity.  It would be useful to historians studying European-Native American relations or Creek history. . . . Frank's story offers a good deal of insight into the various conflicts and increasing tensions that ended with forced Indian removal."—Jeremy Pressgrove, Southern Historian (Jeremy Pressgrove Southern Historian 2006-11-14)"Frank has significantly expanded our knowledge about how the endurance of clan and village life in one southeastern Indian society shaped intercultural relations over a long span of time."—Daniel H. Usner, Jr., American Historical Review (Daniel H. Usner, Jr. American Historical Review)“Serious studies of race and identity in the American South are forced to confront a highly charged and complex history that continues to haunt us today. As a new attempt to see through those dark waters, Andrew K. Frank’s Creeks and Southerners is a welcome and courageous work of scholarship. . . . [It] is a valuable effort to gain insight into a neglected area of southern scholarship.”—William L. Ramsey, Journal of American History (William L. Ramsey Journal of American History 2008-07-14)

Shubitz This is an important work that any serious student of American race and identity should have in their library. In Creeks and Southerners, Professor Frank examines the lives of "bicultural" Creeks – mostly the children of mixed marriages between Europeans and Creeks in Alabama and Georgia during the 18th century and the early 19th century. What is fascinating about Professor Frank’s work is his finding that these bicultural offspring grew up Creek and were fully accepted into Creek society. In this sense, these bicultural people provide great insight into Creek-European relations during the period. What is important about this is that Professor Frank shows that Creek conceptions of identity were not racial (as European notions were), but rather cultural and based on kinship. He shows that Creek identity was based on the way someone dressed or the language they spoke as well as the people they were related to. In this sense, it was possible for the child of a European father and Creek mother to be accepted as Creek by the Creek people. It was also possible for a European who adopted Creek culture to also be accepted as Creek by the Creek. This truly is an important work on race and identity, the history of the South, and American Indian history.Scott Shubitz

By Amazon Customer One of the most thoughtful and thorough research endeavors on Creeks and Creek Society I've encountered. From a genealogy perspective, (my field of research), I gained an entirely new perspective which shed light on many sketchy details and moments in time for me. I had drawn blanks about the whys of actions of characters in my stories, and this book helped to fill in some holes about the nature, character and lifestyles of mixed heritage individuals living in the South pre-civil war. Frank did an excellent job conveying the diversity and fluidity of the Creek culture within the boundaries (and sometimes outside) of a matrilineal society. Not only a scholarly inquiry, but an engaging read for those of us who have Creek Ancestry, or anyone who lacks insight into the complexity of Native existence.-An informative and enjoyable read.Jill Nelson, Adjunct History Professor, Middle Tennessee State University

Bhengori's Vegetarian Cookbook, by Mrs Rashida Dawood Juan

About the Author The author Rashida Dawood Gangat was born in a small rural town called Weenen in the province of Kwa-Zulu Natal in South Africa. She is a Muslim and as such was brought up on Guajarati Muslim food. The state of Gujarat is only one area in India. There is such a vast diversity of culture and cuisine in that great country that one has to write several hundred books in order to cover it all. Rashida later spent some time in India studying after completing school in South Africa. Here she was introduced to various types of dishes. Only by tasting everything, can one decide whether a dish was good or not. She also realised that the male palate was very different from that of the female. Returning to South Africa she met and married Kenneth Juan, a Catholic. From her mother-in-law she learnt how to cook western food: Christmas dinner and Easter fare etc. She has three sons and a daughter. When her children brought home their Hindu friends, another problem arose. Most of them were vegetarians. Although as a Guajarati, one prepared lentils, this was a different challenge. She now had to prepare food for a younger generation which was used to eating meat with vegetables. All three boys chose vegetarian partners. Hence this book was born. Rashida has been a member of the Federation of Woman’s Institute (W.I.) for more than 20 years and has won many prizes in the baking, jam and preserving section at the Royal Show, for the Estcourt group of the W.I. She was the Cookery Convener for several years in Estcourt - having cookery demonstrations in which she showcased her skills. She also taught ‘cooking for profit’ at Mimosadale School of Industries. Rashida says: “I have compiled a comprehensive recipe book for the younger working person. It is for this new generation person, who is both discerning and health conscious. It is for the person who wants to eat well, but does not have much time to prepare food. I have also looked at super market shelves to see exactly where to find a particular ingredient, to save time when shopping. This information is found in the ingredients section. A reader-friendly exploration of the science of emotion.

After years of neglect by both mainstream biology and psychology, the study of emotions has emerged as a central topic of scientific inquiry in the vibrant new discipline of affective neuroscience. Elizabeth Johnston and Leah Olson trace how work in this rapidly expanding field speaks to fundamental questions about the nature of emotion: What is the function of emotions? What is the role of the body in emotions? What are "feelings,” and how do they relate to emotions? Why are emotions so difficult to control? Is there an emotional brain? The authors tackle these questions and more in this "tasting menu" of cutting-edge emotion research. They build their story around the path-breaking 19th century works of biologist Charles Darwin and psychologist and philosopher William James. James's 1884 article "What Is an Emotion?" continues to guide contemporary debate about minds, brains, and emotions, while Darwin's treatise on "The Expression of Emotions in Animals and Humans" squarely located the study of emotions as a critical concern in biology. Throughout their study, Johnston and Olson focus on the key scientists whose work has shaped the field, zeroing in on the most brilliant threads in the emerging tapestry of affective neuroscience. Beginning with early work on the brain substrates of emotion by such workers such as James Papez and Paul MacLean, who helped define an emotional brain, they then examine the role of emotion in higher brain functions such as cognition and decision-making. They then investigate the complex interrelations of emotion and pleasure, introducing along the way the work of major researchers such as Antonio Damasio and Joseph LeDoux. In doing so, they braid diverse strands of inquiry into a lucid and concise introduction to this burgeoning field, and begin to answer some of the most compelling questions in the field today. How does the science of "normal" emotion inform our understanding of emotional disorders? To what extent can we regulate our emotions? When can we trust our emotions and when might they lead us astray? How do emotions affect our memories, and vice versa? How can we best describe the relationship between emotion and cognition? Johnston and Olson lay out the most salient questions of contemporary affective neuroscience in this study, expertly situating them in their biological, psychological, and philosophical contexts. They offer a compelling vision of an increasingly exciting and ambitious field for mental health professionals and the interested lay audience, as well as for undergraduate and graduate students. 13 illustrations

The Feeling Brain: The Biology and Psychology of Emotions, by Elizabeth Johnston DPhil, Leah Olson PhD

Review “This book offers a comprehensive, detailed and referenced, synthetic and analytic (rare enough to be noted) insight into emotional experience and its physiological substrate. . . . [T]he complexity and history of neurosciences and biological theories of emotions are told in a very accessible way.” (Metapsychology Online Reviews)“[A] marvelous and fascinating review of our feeling brain in a clear and understandable way. . . . [A] good resource for anyone interested in the neuroscience of emotions. . . . [W]ith its nuanced research, history, and case studies, it drew me in. . . . I took so many notes as I read and found so much valuable information in the book that I can hardly narrow it down.” (PsychCentral)“This wonderful, well-written book . . . is both a richly detailed history of the development of the study of emotions in neuroscience and psychology and a snapshot of contemporary research on emotions. . . . In addition to the depth and breadth of its coverage of the science of emotion, the book is distinguished by the strength of the authors’ narrative voice. They do not simply describe the science―they tell a fascinating and compelling story.” (CHOICE)“[T]he movie Inside Out translates into lay terms what . . . The Feeling Brain presents in much more technical detail. . . . [A]n extremely well researched, in-depth yet concise book for neuroscientists, neuropsychologists, and psychologists who want to know more about the neuroanatomy of emotions. It would also be of interest to any individuals looking for detailed information on the dynamics and understanding of emotions, cognition, and neural integration.” (Dr. Diane Brain Health)“In a comprehensive and accessible book, Drs. Johnston and Olson successfully weave together the diverse threads of emotion research. The result is a rich tapestry that conveys something profound: a more complete picture of what it means to feel. This book not only expanded my knowledge of emotion research. It changed how I teach affective neuroscience, but also, my awareness of those around me, particularly those with whom I share an emotional bond. ” (Dr. Nathan Spreng, Asst. Professor of Human Development, Cornell University)“In The Feeling Brain, Elizabeth Johnston and Leah Olson provide a well-written, engaging, and informative synthesis of one of the most exciting research areas in modern psychology and neuroscience. This timely volume will be essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the relationship between emotion and the brain. ” (Daniel L. Schacter, William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and author of The Seven Sins of Memory: How the Mind Forgets and Remembers)

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. What a smooth, clear, persuasive exposition! By Jacob E Sperber I have just read Johnston and Olson’s new work, The Feeling Brain: the Biology and Psychology of Emotions. Wow! What a smooth, clear, persuasive exposition of recent decades of ground-breaking neuroscience discoveries. Not a simple read, the effort invested pays off with such clarification and deepening of understanding. I love how the authors smoothly transition from focused paradigms to large evolutionary principles, summarizing the incisive brilliance of neuroscientists like Schultz, the Damasios, Berridge, and A. D. Craig, and relating them to Darwin and James.I have studied and taught neuroscience throughout my career and always try to stay current with new research. I have struggled to integrate the implications of new discoveries into an organized, updated understanding of the way the structure of brain gives rise to mind and behavior. This amazing volume delivers the complex, integrated model I have been seeking. Thanks to the authors' uniquely graceful pedagogy, my teaching on these topics is greatly improved. I will use this volume as a basic textbook in upcoming courses.

Excerpt from Food and Cookery for the Sick and Convalescent"Food is the only source of human power to work or to think."This work is designed to meet the demands made upon me by the numberless classes of trained nurses whom it has been my pleasure and privilege to instruct during my thirteen years of service as a teacher of cookery. It is earnestly hoped that, besides meeting this long felt need, it will do a still broader work in thousands of homes throughout the land, where it will be of inestimable help to the mothers upon whom so much of the welfare of the family depends. The opening chapters are equally valuable to those who care for the sick and those who see in correct feeding the way of preventing much of the illness about us.Emphasis has been laid on the importance of diet from infancy to old age. The classification, composition, nutritive value, and digestibility of foods have been carefully considered with the same constant purpose of being a help to those who arrange dietaries.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Food and Cookery for the Sick and Convalescent (Classic Reprint), by Fannie Merritt Farmer

About the Author Fannie Merritt Farmer (1857-1915) was an American authority on cookery, born in Boston. She received her early education in Medford, Massachusetts, and graduated from the Boston Cooking School, of which she was a director from 1892 to 1902. In the latter year she founded Miss Farmer's School of Cookery, Boston, with the purpose of instructing housewives and nurses in the art of cookery, rather than training prospective domestic science teachers. She edited The Boston Cooking School Cook Book (1896); 21 editions were published before her death. Out of this grew the Fannie Farmer Cookbook, still being published.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. practical and very useful By Edane I own the 1912 edition of this book and recommend it highly, in any edition, for anyone's cookery shelf. It can sit there quietly until you need to care for someone who is sick at home, then it becomes a gold mine of useful recipes and advice. I would also recommend Florence Nightingale, Notes on Nursing, for other practical sick care advice, A Soothing Broth, by Pat Willard, and the 1951 Red Cross Home Nursing book for its 'to the point' sensible advice and quaint but very useful illustrations. Newer editions of the Red Cross book are ok but the 1951 ed is my favorite for practical simple advice. Buy the Fannie Farmer book. Someday, when someone is ill, you'll be glad you have it. :-)
