Review

This book has become a classic in the field - sophisticated,  accessible and interesting.  It is of great use to students, teachers and practitioners of Health Psychology world wide.

(Leslie Swartz, Distinguished Professor of Psychology)

This is a remarkable book. It is exceptionally complete, thoughtful, and deep.  It avoids the superficial accounting of many texts and does not shy away from controversy. It is fully rooted in today’s science of health psychology.

(Stevan E. Hobfoll, Ph.D. Professor of Behavioral Sciences, Medicine, and Preventive Medicine)

A very nice introductory text that takes a biopsychosocial approach to health and illness, and recognizes the importance of culture, health literacy, and issues such as racism and health inequities/disparities that continue to impact disadvantaged communities.

(Cheryl L. Holt)

Like other textbooks, this book provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of health psychology. Unlike other books however, this one takes a holistic-systems approach to health, and uses the novel concept of the Health Onion to do so: The myriad determinants of health are presented as different layers – biological, familial, behavioral, neighborhood, social and cultural – that must be scientifically-examined and peeled away to understand health. Consequently, the book contains many valuable chapters that other textbooks lack, including chapters on macro-level influences (Chapter 2), social justice and social inequality (Chapter 3), and cultural factors (Chapter 4). Moreover, the examples provided to illustrate each layer of the influences on health are global ones, and include health and its psychology in Europe, the USA, Asia, Africa, and elsewhere. This unique approach helps students understand that the health of individuals is a part and product of the family, social-network, neighborhood, and society in which they are embedded. Hence, this revised edition provides an excellent overview of health and of the science of health psychology in their local and larger contexts.

(Hope Landrine)Just as the Journal of Health Psychology is not like any other journal in the field, this new edition of David Mark’s "Health Psychology” textbook is different from all the other textbooks in the field. It will broaden your perspectives as it educates your mind. (Kenneth A. Wallston)

The book aims to help the reader to become more aware of our astonishing skills of Systems Intelligence. It focuses on everyday systems like families, workplaces and communities. These systems are created through our thoughts, actions and connections with others. They are systems that shape our lives, but also offer the possibility of us changing them from within. We are always part of systems. We can act intelligently from within those systems.

Systems Intelligence extends the concepts of Emotional and Social Intelligence. Systems Intelligence is the innate yet learnable capacity through which we engage with the diverse systems in our lives.

The book presents the Eight Dimensions of Systems Intelligence. It looks at how we can better see and understand systems through developing our systems perception. It pushes the reader to not just see systems around them, but to realize that we can often feel systems at work via attunement. It explores how reflection reveals how systems shape our thought processes and how we can develop the way we think. It reveals the systemic effects of positive engagement with others. It shows how an attitude of spirited discovery helps improve existing systems or create new ways of doing things. It stresses the skills and preparedness required for effective responsiveness within systems. It promotes wise action that allows us to work holistically with systems, to adopt a long-term perspective when needed, and to manage destructive emotions. It underscores the importance of a positive attitude to consistently act in systems intelligent ways.

The reader can evaluate her strengths in Systems Intelligence by taking the SI-test at: www.systemsintelligence.aalto.fi/test

The concept of Systems Intelligence was introduced in 2004 by Professors Raimo P. Hämäläinen and Esa Saarinen of Aalto University in Helsinki.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Influencing and influenced by By Michael It seems so obvious – a baby picks it up intuitively, untaught, at birth. That is where this book begins. Being better better means displaying systems intelligence, defined by Saarinen and Hämäläinen in their 2004 paper as “intelligent behaviour in the context of complex systems involving interaction and feedback”. I recognise that I am part of a whole that both influences me and is influenced by me. Even as a baby I subconsciously recognise this. What this book does is to make this ability “more visible” (p.22). It does this by describing eight interrelated dimensions which “provide a framework through which we can enrich our possibilities for action” (p.22) and which will allow us to be “better at being better” (p.22).I approached systems intelligence as a student of organisational change. I was comparing the model of management-led change detailed by Lewin (1947), Kotter (1996) and others with the notion of emergent change promoted by Streatfield (2001), Stacey (2011) and others. I affirmed Stacey’s critique of management-led change: the control it suggests is an illusion. Stacey then goes on to suggest that organisations are not systems because systems are external to the people who form them. This claim did not ring true to me – and that is when I came across systems intelligence which, like Stacey and his school of thought, rejects management-led change, but, unlike Stacey and his friends, affirms that organisations are systems, stating that “even if a system appears to have a life of its own, it actually responds to the actions of its members just as they adapt their behaviour to the system” (p.22). The answer is not to reject systems but to interact with them intelligently.Systems intelligence draws on systems thinking, which recognises that the whole is more than its parts. Peter Senge (1990) more than any other applies systems thinking to organisations, stating that it is the discipline that fuses other disciplines together “into a coherent body of theory and practice” (p.12). Systems intelligence takes this one step further. Esa Saarinen was once asked to summarise his life desire in one word. His answer: “Influence.” (Jones & Hämäläinen, 2013, p.1). The systems in which we live are always in a state of flux, influenced and influencing, and as I engage with my surroundings systems intelligently I will influence. The eight dimensions of systems intelligence, as described in this book, are: realise how everything is connected (systems perception); develop the intuitive ability to sense and connect with systems (attunement); live with your eyes open (reflection); enjoy positive relationships with others (positive engagement); take risks and step out of the box (spirited discovery); “live the questions” (Rilke, quoted in Ladkin, 2010, p.1) (effective responsiveness); use a bit of common sense (wise action); live hope and give hope (positive attitude). The first two of these eight points are closely related to systems intelligence but then the flavour of the book becomes more like a self-help manual. Put the principles into practice and your life will be enriched and you will live a better life. As such, the book feels broader than simply “Living with Systems Intelligence”.Being better better is full of anecdotes and stories, rooting the principles in reality and making it an enjoyable read. Annika Varjonen’s illustrations brighten up the page and illuminate the text. The book concludes with the challenge to act, to get out of our small-minded armchairs and engage with the systems of which we are part. Gil Bailie’s spiritual mentor once said, “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and go do that, because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” (quoted in Eldredge, 2001, p.200) Following the principles elucidated in Being better better will help us come alive. Change starts with “the man in the mirror” (Jackson, 1988).ReferencesEldredge, J. (2001) Wild at Heart. Nashville: Thomas NelsonJackson, M. (1988) Man in the Mirror. Epic. Song written by S. Not only did it describe her fun, curious, adventurous life and spirit, it took me back in time through the various anecdotes from her childhood. It also highlighted the struggles she faced as a single, working mom during a time when opportunities for women were much more limited. The book has inspired me to share more of my history and stories with my children, and to make sure I play more and set an example of resilience and fun for my kids just as Helen has always done.

All consciousness must in the first instance present itself as a relation between two constituent parts, the person who is conscious, and the thing, whatever it may be, of which he is conscious. This contrast has been indicated, directly or indirectly, by various names--mind and matter; person and thing; subject and object; or, lastly, in the distinction, most convenient for philosophy, however uncouth in sound, between self and not self--the ego and the non-ego.

The American system is broken: our great nation has become corrupt, inefficient, and mired in ideological debate. The United States may be a global superpower, but every day we fail our own citizens. Our children don't learn what they need to in order to compete in the job market; our adults battle mental illness and addiction, and are imprisoned at staggering rates; and our elderly struggle for financial security and affordable healthcare. We are more often at war with other nations than not. We work harder and harder but seem to get less and less in return. Meanwhile, politicians, the media, and the super-rich hold our tremendous potential hostage by taking advantage of our democratic system, divisive politics, and unwillingness to compromise. Now more than ever, the country desperately needs a new vision to restore it to its former glory and launch it into the next century. Entrepreneur Matt Tabrizi shares such a vision in YFOG, a book that analyzes America's problems and offers a stimulating plan for solving them. Audaciously straightforward and refreshingly pragmatic, this book takes a problem-solving approach to a myriad of issues troubling our nation and lifts the curtain of power to expose those abusing the mechanisms of government and the very system of capitalism for their own gain. Based on the belief that economic success must be achieved along with social justice, Tabrizi's book lays out ways to bring real change to America and improve our lives and our children's, addressing topics such as illicit drugs, social security, cancer, education, healthcare, elections, and the economy. Only someone with the author's experience--as a businessman, an expert in operations, and an immigrant who found success, and a home, in America--could have written this clear-eyed, common-sense, and hopeful prescription for the truly great nation we can still become.

Yield For Oncoming Greatness: Capping Capitalism, by Mr. Matt N Tabrizi

From the Author We, the American people, are a family. We have over three hundred million members. One of every hundred of our family members is in prison. More than sixteen hundred of us die each day from cancer. Many of us take medications for depression, anxiety, or sleep disorders, or use illicit drugs. Most of us work hard and have strong ethics, yet we don't have much to show for it. Our family has divergent views, which could not be any further apart, on many issues, from piety to politics. We are happy, sad, depressed, angry, and often at war. Nevertheless, we are a family--one of the youngest, brightest, freest, strongest, noisiest, most innovative, most philanthropic families around! But at times we can best be described as broken. Our family suffers not because of a lack of resources, intelligence, or willpower, but because the capitalist track that has worked for so long is failing us. And that failure is because we have reached a point on the track that we neither anticipated nor prepared for. The bad news is that we are moving fast on this track, and the status quo will only make matters worse. The good news is that we can stop and even backtrack until we get it right. It would not be easy, but it is within our means. YFOG explores the roots of socioeconomic issues that have brought us here and offers sensible solutions for a better America.

Capitalism in Focus_ Refreshing and essential By Milan Kristoff Yield for Oncoming Greatness is an excellent book for those seeking to have an overview of the current challenges facing the United States as it struggles to maintain the essence of what made this nation great. The author Mr. Tabrizi manages to encompass an extensive list of concerns affecting the nation and elegantly brings them into focus along his views on possible solutions for the challenges ahead. The book does have space for more depth since the scope of the issues are vast and complex but the author succeeds in bringing such a variety of issues affecting Capitalism to both experts on the fields explored in the book and the casual reader.Refreshing, honest and optimistic about the future of a great nation; with a wealth of references that are essential to anyone interested in the well being of the United Sates and the understanding of its political economic system which has far reaching implications that go beyond one nation.

Great catalyst for thought and dialogue By steinhausmin Tabrizi has done an excellent job creating a platform from which to have intelligent conversations about the nature of the practical political future of the United States. Are the solutions he puts forward fully developed? No--but that's not the point. There are idea starters here, and with sufficient collaboration and dialogue from people from all ideological backgrounds fully fleshed-out solutions could be developed. There are things in here you will love. There are things in here you will hate and that will make you angry. But you cannot walk away from this book without thinking about the ideas that lie in its pages, and I promise you will find a catalyst for ongoing conversations with others--regardless of their political ilk. Perhaps what we need is input from first generation Americans like Tabrizi to help us all see our country's future in a much better light.

Tebeau I enjoyed Mr. Tabrizi’s book and agreed with many of his ideas on “how to fix the American system”. The author lays out ways to bring real change to America and improve our lives and the lives of our children. I found his book easy to read and I for one greatly appreciated his “overall lack of detail”. In my opinion too much detail can loose a reader, better to give a broad idea and go into detail when you have the reader's total interest in that particular subject, perhaps another book or on your website. Thank you Mr. Tabrizi for your insights and proposals to America's problems, instead of just complaining about them.

It is generally accepted in the West that Buddhism is a ‘peaceful’ religion. The Western public tends to assume that the doctrinal rejection of violence in Buddhism would make Buddhist pacifists, and often expects Buddhist societies or individual Asian Buddhists to conform to the modern Western standards of ‘peaceful’ behavior. This stereotype – which may well be termed ‘positive Orientalism,’ since it is based on assumption that an ‘Oriental’ religion would be more faithful to its original non-violent teachings than Western Christianity – has been periodically challenged by enthusiastic acquiescence by monastic Buddhism to the most brutal sorts of warfare.

This volume demolishes this stereotype, and produces instead a coherent, nuanced account on the modern Buddhist attitudes towards violence and warfare, which take into consideration both doctrinal logic of Buddhism and the socio-political situation in Asian Buddhist societies. The chapters in this book offer a deeper analysis of ‘Buddhist militarism’ and Buddhist attitudes towards violence than previous volumes, grounded in an awareness of Buddhist doctrines and the recent history of nationalism, as well as the role Buddhism plays in constructions of national identity. The international team of contributors includes scholars from Thailand, Japan, and Korea.

    Review

This well-researched volume will definitely raise awareness of academics, policy makers, and students. At the same time, it deserves a wide readership, especially among general readers concerned with the nexus of Buddhism and violence". - Kai Chen, College of Public Administration, Zhejiang University, China, Journal of Global Buddhism

Interesting essays on Buddhist violence By Jeri Although there are many different strains of Buddhism, the western world continues to believe that Buddhism is essentially nonviolent. This is simply factually wrong. It was not true historically, and it is not even true today. As recently as Dec 6, 2009 more than 1,000 Buddhists lugging clubs and swords savagely attacked a Catholic church in Crooswatta, Sri Lanka. As they fell on Father Lakshman, they shouted, "Cut him to pieces, kill him." Sri Lanka is plagued by nationalism and Christian groups are persecuted, frequently violently. Not that our media has noticed. This book is full of essays covering Buddhism and violence."Acceptance for a certain extent of state violence is plausible within ...Dhammaraja-Buddhism and the concept of Thainess" (p 47), is the provocative argument in "Military Temples and Saffron-Robed Soldiers".In "Canonical Ambiguity and Differential Practices" Frydenlund points out the complicated political and social reasons that have led monks to join in wars. "Pacifism among monks is rare. In many ways war was accepted as a regrettable part of life in the world" (p 107)".Perhaps the most intriguing entry is Auerback's exploration of the well known book, 'Zen at War" and the general nationalistic fervor shown by Zen Buddhists in Japan for war. Auerback investigates Zen and military chaplaincy in the diary of Soen. The variety within Buddhism is well expressed in 1977 by Kittivuddho, a leading Thai Buddhist monk, who announced that "killing Communists is not a sin" (p 177).Nor is he merely a modern aberration. Before Christ was born, monks fought a war with Buddha's relic as a banner. And "throughout Chinese Buddhist history, monks were...seen involved in military conflict and war. In 515, a monk called Faqing rallied behind him more than 50,000 Buddhists" (p 203) to fight with him against the Northern Wei dynasty.
