“A beautifully-written, poignant and brave tribute to a beloved brother with a devastating illness.”
- Aliza Israel, MD, FRCPC; Staff Psychiatrist, Women's College Hospital; Lecturer, University of Toronto From the foreword by Rabbi Nathaniel Helfgot: “Jennifer Tzivia MacLeod has written a searingly honest account of her younger brother Eli’s life and struggle with schizophrenia from his teenage years through his untimely death in 2014. “Ms. Macleod ushers us into the world of ‘crazy,’ as she terms it, and shares with us moments and snippets of both Eli’s life and chal-lenges and the interactions of a sister and other family members as they engage and deal with a sibling and son who lives with a serious and unrelenting mental illness.” Please wait until the ride has come to a full and complete stop: My brother's life with schizophrenia, by Jennifer Tzivia MacLeod- Amazon Sales Rank: #588719 in eBooks

A touching personal account of schizophrenia By Stephan Stuecklin Is there a junction where the beloved kid brother veers off the normal into insanity? How do I properly love and interact with an insane and therefore often unpleasant sibling? How should society handle insane people - lock them up, treat them, integrate them somehow? Why do our colloquialisms equate losing our cool with losing our mind, and what's with our tendency to deduce that unspeakably horrid crimes must be the product of insane minds (as opposed to sane evil minds)? Why do we know how to react to our friend's mother having breast cancer but not to our friend's brother losing his mind? How do redemption and forgiveness look like when dealing with mental illness? These - and more - are questions that Mrs. MacLeod has been forced to consider through her life with a schizophrenic brother. To some, she offers answers, to others, suggestions, and some of them have yet to find some resolution. Her book invites us along on the bumpy ride of terminal schizophrenia, one of the many forms of terminal mental illness out there, which all have in common that speaking about them is hard, if not taboo. In this book, Mrs. MacLeod breaks this taboo. Here, she tells the story of her brother's descent. She tells us how she reacted to his quirks, tics, and lack of hygiene; how he had bright and tender moments, and how he had others where he made life for those around him nearly unbearable; how he failed people and how they failed him. She tells us in matter-of-fact language, and, because much of the matter is reworked from her blog, short sentences and bite-sized paragraphs.Kinda like this one.Which, in a blog, serves its purpose well. In a book: not so much.At least, that's how I feel. But aside from that oddity, which is absent from the editorial material inserted later and which tends to have a more reflective tone anyway, clear prose, humble honesty, and wry humor make this book a rare bird: easy to read and hard to put down, despite the heavy subject matter and heartfelt and serious mission of the author.Note 1: If you can spare the cash, I'd buy the hardcopy. On kindle, it's just too annoying to try to jump back to the table of contents to check the structure - which is somewhat non-linear, but not nearly enough to make me think Mrs. MacLeod might be mirroring schizophrenia in the structure.Note 2: I received a free kindle copy in exchange for an honest review. This is it. Now go buy the book.

So personal and honest and real of ups and downs and ins and outs and challenges and rewards and amazingness and heartbreak of having a family member with a debilitating mental illness. Not just the generic "family member", but a dear brother. It sounds like the author and her brother were as close as any brother and sister could be from a young young age, and she shares her feelings of that love and pain and sadness and heartbreak with real vulnerability. Anyone who's family or life has been affected by their or another's mental health challenges would likely appreciate and feel touched by this book. One other point to say however is that I felt it would benefit from more editing. At the same time, it is raw and real, straight from the author's heart and touched my heart which is part of what I appreciated so much about it and why I gave it 5 stars.

It felt like I was reading pages directly from her personal journal. As someone who has a loved one in our family with mental illness, I can so relate and identify with the author's honesty in what she writes. Highly recommended read!!
