About the Author
Len Deighton was born in London in 1929. At the age of seventeen he became a photographer attached to the R.A.F. Special Investigations Branch. Following his discharge in 1949 he did a variety of jobs and in 1952 won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art. His writing career began with The Ipcress File which was a spectacular success and was made into a classic film starring Michael Caine.

Great book with practical advice By soulboy13 This book is a worthy addition to the cooking library.Unlike most recipe books, this one tells you why you should do certain things in recipes. For example, I never knew why one had to fold eggs in to certain cake mixtures. why couldn't I just give the whole thing a good beat to mix it well? The reason is adding air to the mixture.It covers all the basics of french cooking, such as making stocks to very useful charts on sauces -starting with the basic white sauce and its variations.I have learned a lot fomr this book, and am sure everyone will take away something useful from it.Highly recommended.

Simple and Effective By Janet Dykstra Great concept...teaching "kitchen challenged" people to cook French food (in the French manner) by the use of simple explanations and comic strips??!! This is a fun read, and should be required for anyone wanting to master the culinary arts. A hidden gem!

If you are a fan of Len Deighton and you also love to cook (or you love to read about food), this is for you: many people do not know that Len Deighton began his career working in kitchens to pay his way through art school. This beautifully illustrated guide was written to encourage men to cook more- do not be put off the title- and it makes you want to cook everything in the book! What Strunk and White did for helping people learn to write, Deighton's Cookstrips does for helping anyone interested in learning how to cook. His instructions are lucid and succinct. Deighton's wit and sense of humour are evident and he is a practical and generous teacher. Cookstrips's real genius lies in the fact that each recipe is done in only 3 panels, cartoon strip-style. Everything is pared down to the essentials. I read this book cover to cover and then began to mark pages of recipes I wanted to try (sauces, fruit desserts, fish)- this is definitely a desert-island cookbook for me. Cannot recommend it highly enough!
