Uber is changing the transportation industry forever and making us re-think black car service for everybody. With the touch of a button, the perfect vehicle arrives to whisk you to your dreams… but what do we really know about the driver? Borrowing from Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and a middle-aged On the Road, this book takes us on a journey through the corners of Detroit as this driver searches for meaning after a troubled past while the city recovers from the most significant municipal bankruptcy in U.S. history. From the pristine and decadent suburbs to the graffiti-tagged ruins, with industrial captains and strippers, I’m Light shows us the shine and the shadows as they unfold through the tinted windows of his Cadillac. Gerson discovers much about himself while carrying passengers through a city that is at once romantic and terrifying, with resurgent pockets of rebirth and dark stagnant corners you dare not traverse. Mix hopeful takes on this area’s position as a thriving worldwide commerce hub with touches of physics and humanity and you have a revealing drive on the mean streets all around Detroit. Buckle up, Baby.

Once you open these pages you are riding shotgun along with the author through the streets of downtown, metro Detroit, and the suburbs. Through his eyes you get a front row view to the city of Detroit making a comeback. As he navigates the city, driving it’s citizens and visitors - we’re passengers through his own emotional journey. Through his passenger stories and interactions you feel the tension between haves and have nots, race, religion and history. The emotional ride-along of the author’s life transitions and self discovery make it clear that both the process of diving and writing are both cathartic and therapeutic for him. As I read this it brought to mind,Cheryl Strayed’s book Wild - as she lays some demons of her past to rest, as she hikes 1,001 miles on the Pacific Crest Trail on her own journey of self discovery. So by driving or walking, motion and distance for these authors has the ability to have a positive impact on emotion. From a reader’s perspective I had a speed bump or two in the first chapter adjusting to language, but soon got pulled into the story and the ride smoothed out from there. Having grown up in metro Detroit I really enjoyed revisiting some old haunts along with the author, and learning about new ones that are now on my future to-do list. This is a thoroughly engaging story and I highly recommend you pick up a copy as it’s a compelling read that’s hard to put down. It’s full of love, humor, regret, physics, self-discovery, hope and a whole lot of Detroit driving!

Hope springs eternal in this fresh read about becoming an uber driver By OnlineShopaholic Gary Gerson offers readers an intimate look at his life and the lives of the many he has driven through the streets of Metro Detroit. This book reads quickly, but hits you deeply. For those of us from the wealthy suburbs of Detroit, the familiarity of the setting is especially poignant. For readers not from our metro area, come discover details that may surprise and amaze you about our left-behind town that still has some fight left in it. This ride is an absolute delight!
