Regina Holliday takes readers on an odyssey of abuse and empowerment in her memoir The Writing on the Wall. She recounts bright moments from her childhood with an innocent wonder that contrasts painfully with her years of abuse at the hands of an alcoholic father. Her determination to take a stand against injustice was formed at an early age. It served her well as an adult when she became the caregiver of her husband Frederick Allen Holliday II. He was hospitalized for tests in the spring of 2009. They began an eleven-week journey through five facilities in an attempt to get appropriate treatment for his advanced kidney cancer. After watching Fred suffer poor care coordination, a lack of access to data, and a series of medical errors, Regina was determined she would try to improve care for her husband as well as all the other patients who were abused in this way. She painted a series of murals to reform health care standards and became part of the national health care reform debate.

The Writing on the Wall, by Regina Holliday

About the Author Some people call Regina Holliday the Rosa Parks of health care. Ms. Holliday is an activist, artist, and speaker. Regina is also a mother and a widow; she speaks about the benefits of health information technology and timely data access for patients due to her family loss. In 2009, she painted a series of murals depicting the need for clarity and transparency in medical records. This advocacy mission was inspired by her late husband Frederick Allen Holliday II and his struggle to get appropriate care during 11 weeks of continuous hospitalization at 5 facilities. Her paintings became part of the national debate on health care reform and helped guide public policy. She also began an advocacy movement called “The Walking Gallery.” The Gallery consists of medical providers and advocates who wear patient story paintings on the backs of business suits. This "walking wall" is changing minds and opening hearts. Regina Holliday is a resident of Grantsville, Maryland. She travels internationally to speak and paint about patient rights.

She is an artist with original ideas, audacity, determination and work ethic. The Writing on the Wall lays bare her earliest memories to her current international work on behalf of patients in memory of her beloved late husband. I cried, laughed, read sections aloud to my husband. Her book is not only intensely personal and emotionally riveting, it is a primer on all that makes American health care so difficult to navigate, even in this era of the ACA, Health IT, patients rights, meaningful use, and all the other buzzwords. Regina lived through the challenges of her husband's cancer and untimely death while breadwinning and raising her two sons. Upon her husband's death she set forth on a mission, a mission to ensure the rest of us would gain meaningful and timely access to our medical records. Regina speaks, writes, paints, works with an authenticity born out of struggle. Her book stands with tomes like "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls and "Angela's Ashes" by Frank McCourt. Regina challenges her audience to fully participate in LIFE. I highly recommend this book for patients, advocates, caregivers. I recommend it for public policy makers, health care professionals, and Health IT professionals.

It isn't just about patient's right - it is a very good read about a woman's journey. Yes, she is changing all of our lives as I type this, she is very literally bettering the world, but this book is her story. When you read this book you feel anguish and relief, you will feel powerless and empowered, you will feel sorrow and joy, but most of all you will be different than you were before you read this book. You will be different than before you knew Regina Holliday as she takes you on a roller-coaster of life. She uses different pieces of her soul to share with all of us the lessons she has learned. She teaches us about "horizons" and seeing the world with different eyes. She teaches us about safety in numbers. She teaches us that we need each other even if we can stand alone. The world needs more people like this brave and courageous woman who lost the love she was finally granted. This book will break you. It will remake you. Everyone should read this book.As I read passages to my husband, tears filled his eyes. This is not something that is easily done. This book moves people. This book is profound. This book should be in every school, hospital, and waiting room.

By Joseph Lavelle Be prepared to be inspired by Regina's story and passion to improve Healthcare. She is inspiring the masses of Healthcare IT professionals that have lived for years with barriers and boundaries to challenge them, knock them down, and create a health system designed around the patient! She is "changing minds" and "opening hearts" and this book is simply one more "portal" in that effort. I highly recommend that you read this great book, join The Walking Gallery, and help change Healthcare!
