Shannon Love, a seemingly happy woman, through unforeseen circumstances, falls into a critical psychotic state, while living in Beijing, China. Enchanted by a voice in her head, she becomes suspicious of humanity--most of all Charles, her husband, believing he wishes her dead. Shannon's hallucination, along with relentless delusions, send her into a state of terror, landing her in a Chinese psychiatric hospital, as the only foreigner. Then, after sinking deeper into madness, she must be evacuated to the U.S. for intense treatment. Meanwhile, her husband, with his undying love, holds firm to his matrimonial vow "for better or for worse," and never gives up on his wife--even through the turmoil of a relapse. Shannon eventually returns to him as her sane self but concedes that she may have never broken free, if not for his eternal devotion.

Shannon has an amazing ability to write about her life, and her episodes of psychosis, with a clarity that is unseen in most books." -Aram Sohigian, MA, Google Books "A book ANYONE should read...Shannon's world living with her mental illness.  Mrs. Love does a great job explaining her psychosis, her thought patterns, and her treatments." -Niki's Book Review   "I recommend this book to anyone curious enough to see how people with psychosis and delusions look at and deal with life. To say it was an "eye opener" would be an understatement." -Leila Tualla, Leila Tualla Books"I was hooked through the whole book and often I identified (as someonewith Bipolar) with her story." -Kathleen, SMS Nonfiction Book Reviews"An extraordinary and unique work by an extraordinary and unique author, Twisting My Kaleidoscope is very highly recommended for community and academic library collections." -MidwestBook Review"In an absorbing narrative she recalls the memory of her days of storm-her days of clinical therapy...it is a journey of life for Love where she will[see] life from a different perspective-a new angle that will give her more strength to conquer her difficult days." -Jayasree, Jayasree's A New Dimension in Review"This book offers a critical analysis of the myth of mental illness, but also, more generally, the grammar of everyday life, of the world as it is and life in its articulation in roles based on the logic of closed identity ready to sacrifice other things, to expunge the other roles associated with sexual identity, membership, and functionality." -Kalyan Panja, Bootica"Twisting My Kaleidoscope will draw you in. If not from a place of fear, then question. If not from fear or question, then sheer honesty and bravery." -Life Breath Present "In this book, the author opens up her soul and shares with the world her journey into psychosis and how it affected her family."-Argiletum "She takes the reader inside her world, inside her mind as she documents every feeling, thought, frustration, good and bad day, clinical visits, the affect this illness has not only on her, but her family, friends, and brings the reader full circle as she reflects back on what her life has been like for the past two years living with psychosis, and ultimately where she sees her life later down the road." -Morgan Amos, Create. Many writers have authored books of mental illness – usually rather wild tales of men or women whose dissociative synapses create a creature no one understands much less want as an associate. And then there are books that discuss the various aspects of mental illness – dry, technical, and though informative, not accessible.Such is most assuredly not the case with Shannon Love – this is her own story, a story about a women who lived through psychosis and came out an author who writes about her personal experience with mental illness in a manner that brings us into her circle and leaves us wanting more. As she states ‘I married my childhood sweetheart and joined him in a life of travel and adventure. His job, combined with our enterprising natures, established us in a nomadic lifestyle that we enjoyed thoroughly. Within our first ten years of marriage, our family grew from two members to five. Refusing to slow down, our kids simply adapted, assembling into each of the five states in which we resided, as well as our years abroad, when we lived in Spain, Angola, and China. Then--as life sometimes does--it placed a detour directly in my path. Unsympathetic to my location or circumstances, Mother Nature tinkered with my neurotransmitters while we were living in Beijing, and thus, fate sent me to a new destination --the world of psychosis, a place far more alien than any I had yet visited. Hijacked by happenstance, I was pulled out of my sane world and transported to a bizarre planet filled with hallucinations and delusions.’The title of her book is well chosen and Shannon illustrates her vision with colorful twists of what we each can see as we gaze through a kaleidoscope. The idea is sound, but it is the quality of her skills as a scribe that makes this book poetic and inspirational. For example, in relating her birth she shares the following: ‘Forty-three years ago, I emerged in the heart of the Bible belt into contradictory arms. My naked cries called to an atheist father and I suckled milk from a woman not quite ready to announce her homosexuality. Ill received by her evangelical neighbors, Mother exited the closet a few years later with a suitcase in hand. Bidding my brother and me adieu, she left in search of her identity. Please don’t weep, for odd beginnings are not necessarily depressing. In my case, it was rather the contrary. Unlike in traditional “evil stepmother” fairytales, I discovered that far more angels than demons reside in our world. One of them married my dad near my sixth birthday, offering me fifty percent more cuddles than most children I tagged on the playground.’Though this book is a gift to those with psychoses or other forms of mental illness as well as a supportive guide for families and friends, it is far more than that. This is a novel/memoir written with such beauty of style that it deserves the accolades that will come, the awards that will follow, and a welcome to readers who discover the talent of this extraordinary writer. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, January 16

I had to get up in the middle of the night to read more because I just had to know what happened to Shannon in the next chapter. My husband (who only reads WW II history books) decided to read it after I did and he felt the same way. Shannon has opened my eyes to the complex inner thoughts of a person suffering from psychosis. I will never look at a homeless man talking to himself on the street and be afraid again. I know that Shannon had the support of her wonderful supportive family throughout all of her ordeal, but so many others don't get help (or can't) and end up on the streets. I don't know if there are other books written in first person that describe what life is like, but I'm so glad that Shannon shared her story! Her eloquent portrayal of her story is amazing for someone who has never written a book before. I started to read the book again so I could highlight the beautiful imagery that she used to share her experience. I have been touched deeply and most importantly, have a better understanding of emotions that are being experienced by some who are close to me.I had the pleasure of receiving an autographed book from Shannon. She is actually going to come to our book club and be a part of our discussion of her book! We are so very fortunate to be able to have an author with us!

By Monica Foulks What an emotional and heartfelt journey Shannon takes us on as she bravely and very eloquently shares her battle with psychosis. The insight she provides is beyond valuable to each and every one of us. Her words will definitely haunt you the next time you jump to judge a person who you might not fully understand. From the first page I was unable to put the book down and now that I have finished I realize I have learned so much about a world we know so little about. She fearlessly takes you into her reality and shows how her illness not only deeply affects her but also her family and friends. Mental illness is so misunderstood because it has always been taboo to speak of it and therefore the general public knows very little about it. Our society needs to change this and "Twisting My Kaleidoscope" is a great way to start. I highly recommend this book and wish Shannon all the very best as she continues on her path through the Emerald City.
