Very Brief By Andrew Chandler The book numbers 93 pages, but if you exclude appendices, question and answer sections, and non-technical drawings of stills, the number drops to 50. The book focuses on beginning a micro-distillery to produce moonshine. Some of the information could be used for the home hobbyist, but most of the recipes and equipment were designed for someone making very large batches of 'shine.Perhaps the best thing about the book was the simple instructions for building necessary auxiliary equipment (not the still), including where to buy the components and supplies. But the book is non-technical, and much of the content that the author brushes over is not worth reading, because you will need to pick up a more technical book and read that if your intentions are really to start a micro-distillery. In the end, I think this book had a good concept- go through the steps needed to get into the business of making legal moonshine, while leaving the technical distilling aspects for another book. But once the 20 pages of useful information was written, a lot of pulp was thrown in to justify this being a book and not a pamphlet.

Bill Owens first published "How to Build a Small Brewery, Draft Beer in Ten Days" nearly thirty years ago, which is now in its third edition. That was a simple, no-nonsense manual for the aspiring brewer that Bill wrote while the ink was still drying on Senate Amendment 3534, signed into law in 1978 by Jimmie Carter, giving every U.S. household permission to produce up to 200 gallons of tax-exempt beer each year. While home distilling is not yet legal, in his new book, Modern Moonshine Techniques, Bill gives simple, no-nonsense facts to anyone interested in making legal moonshine from sugar, corn or malt. As Bill says in the Introduction, "To learn how to make whiskey you first have to brew beer." In fact, almost every craft distillery (nearly 200 in the U.S. and counting) has a former home, craft or mega brewer on the team. Bill smartly reviews the history, glossary, practicality and FAQs of moonshining, complete with a model business plan. Always the prognosticator about all things malt, Bill finishes the book with an afterward about `terroir' enjoyed by vintners for centuries and now beginning to take shape in brewing, to wit: "We will soon see moonshine and whiskeys in the marketplace that push the boundaries of craft distillation to a new level. Their products will truly be `handcrafted' from local ingredients." Interested in pushing boundaries? Buy this book.
