Assume the Position: Memoirs of an Obstetrician Gynecologist will place the listener in the shoes of an obstetrician and gynecologist with years of clinical experience and training. It will also place the listener in the same stirrups as patients in my office, listening to the trials, tribulations, joys, and fears expressed to me. All women wonder what other women experience when they see their ob-gyn physicians. All men wonder what their girlfriends or wives will be subjected to when exposed in front of their "gynos". The stresses and strains of a busy professional life on an obstetrician gynecologist are revealed in intimate, true detail.

The story begins after early retirement from one of the busiest group practices in Phoenix, Arizona, and a move to the beautiful high alpine ski town of Telluride, Colorado, after an ultimatum from my wife. From there the story continues to the depths of Africa to explore women's health care in a small country with some of the worst obstetrical and neonatal outcomes in the world. Timely topics subsequently discussed include office life, operating room experiences, the medical malpractice crisis, abortion, the family life of an obstetrician, labor and delivery, nightlife, the business of medicine, Obamacare, managed care, and life after private practice. Each chapter is punctuated with true, unfiltered vignettes, laughable, joyful, fearful, and tearful, that can only be found in the life of an ob-gyn physician as he goes throughout his day.

I am an actively licensed, American Board-certified obstetrician gynecologist. A graduate of Princeton University, I was trained at two of the top medical institutions in Philadelphia, after which my wife and I picked up our East Coast roots and moved to begin anew in the desert of Arizona. After 21 years of private practice, involved in all aspects of practice management and women's health care and research, I chose to leave it all behind and begin a second career.

Insight into the life and times of an OB/GYN By diana Assume the Position by Dr Rick HouckAn incredibly easy read from an OB-GYN who recounts his accomplished professional career from medical school to retirement. We are taken on a journey from his upbringing in Pennsylvania, life as an undergrad at Princeton and rejection then acceptance into medical school in Philadelphia. Dr Houck exposes his emotional setbacks as well as the demands of internship, residency and early practice experiences. His commitment and sensitivity to his patients and his practice are laudable as we gain deep insight into the tireless and challenging aspects of a man who loves his work as well as his family.Dr Houck has experienced the many changes in the delivery of healthcare in this nation accommodating the myriad of changes while retaining that empathetic touch that makes medicine an art as well as a science. When women select a doctor it’s often without knowing the full scope of their training and personality. Fortunately for his patients they found an extremely competent jewel who would take time and focus on the whole patient whether their needs were related to family planning, infertility challenges, obstetrical care or any of the many gynecological issues.Humorous at times and with many photos that help us visualize his career path, including a mission to Africa; we have a sense of what life must be like for doctors and their families. With sacrifices of exhaustive hours and personal lack of privacy, as well as risks of malpractice with a statute of limitations that extends to 20 years; what nobel individual would commit to 8 grueling years of medical education and endure such personal sacrifices to their own health and well-being? They are a rare breed indeed and we are led to understand our great fortune having medical professionals with this kind of dedication.

Impressive writing style keeps you wanting the next chapter. I was captivated by the many "adventures"and always wondered how the really obese had........well I will leave that. Actually got choked up a few times and felt some tears of joy. Enjoyed a few belly laughs. Africa , that takes guts. One of my favorite hooray stories was of the 1.5 lb baby . A must read. If I ever have a baby in the jungles I would hand you a sharp knife.

By MSRMD A deeply personal account of obstetrical training years and the career path of a talented and multifaceted physician as he navigates the world of family, medical training, private practice, community service and the business of medicine. Dr. Houck's perspectives on a physician's obligation to both the local and international community and the complexities of medical practice in America, make this a must read for physicians, physicians in training and anyone who has ever been a patient.
