By America Reads Spanish This is one of three works by this author selected for inclusion in "The New Essential Guide to Spanish Reading" which is published by America Reads Spanish: a campaign aimed to increase the use and reading of the Spanish language through the thousands of libraries, schools and book stores in the US. As reviewed in the guide: "Essential writer of the Generation of 1898, Unamuno's philosophy is the product of the existential situation of Spain after the loss of its last colonies and describes the challenge of taking the country to an intellectual level comparable with the rest of Europe. The outlines of Del sentimiento trágico de la vida are sketched in insurmountable paradox which exists between the concepts of living and knowing. For Unamuno, human life is characterized by its complete irrationality, an irrationality which places it in irrepressible contradiction with the vital desires for knowledge innate in man. Elsewhere, Unamuno advocates for a complete differentiation between the spheres of reason and sentiment, two facets of the human being which are absolutely irreconcilable. According to Unamuno, life is synonymous with struggle, and more so, the life of an intellectual, a being who finds himself in the center of a struggle between reason and the needs of his appetite and will."

He poses questions and opinions that will cause you to think carefully what you believe about God - the true God, creator of the heavens and the earth. Don't react on any one statement; you need to read through and hear the heart of what he is saying. I especially liked chapter nine and how he differentiates between those who believe in God and know him and those who say they do for what ever reason. You will need to connect to his circular and forward moving way of thinking, like the wheel of a bicycle as it is peddled to its destination. Enjoy and be challenged. Mark
0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Good price, very small print By Amazon Customer These comments are on the particulars of this edition, and not on Unamuno's masterpiece. The price is very reasonable, but I don't think it's worth it to buy this edition. As others have pointed out, the print is extremely small and that in itself is preventing me from reading it. The margins are also very small and when you're reading the portion in the center, close to the binding, you have to force the book open to be able to read. The other problem is the lack of any publisher information if you need to cite. One problem that has been corrected is the page numbers, it now includes those.
