With THE WORLD UP CLOSE, bicyclist Kameel Nasr has created a fascinating and personal introduction to the world's people, sharing diverse episodes from his 40,000 mile bicycle journey through 70 countries. Nasr offers his readers a vicarious view across the handlebars as he tackles the Appalachians, the Anders, the Himalayas...crosses Sinai in the summer...shares the ever-present fears of Central Americans...explores Morocco's Hashish Trail. Nasr's book will certainly be taken by fellow cyclists as an inviting challenge to take to the road as he has, but you don't have to be a bicycle buff to proclaim this book your reading adventure of the year. Nasr has made this much more a book of people than of places. In high festival or the despair of abject poverty, here are the world's people--very close up yet presented with breathtaking perspective.

It is more work about different cultures than about bicycling, though he rides up mountains, the Andes, the Rockies, the Alps, the Himalayas, rides through war areas and places that have no real roads. Certainly, on a bicycle he finds places that almost all tourists never venture to. He has collected stories from his years on the road, through the US and Europe, Central and South America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Each story tells us something about the local culture, which in turn tells us something about us. Goethe once said that in order to know your own language you should go out and study another language. Perhaps this is true with culture as well: we know what we are like by going out and observing how other people live. He spends time in the rural areas, not surprisingly since he travels the small roads, eating and sleeping with mostly poor people, in towns without electricity (or in one case, in a Bedouin camp where the chief had a color television run off a generator), or villages without clean water. The author pedals and observes. My favorite story is his trek into the Himalayan mountains of Nepal where he stays with a family near a white water river. His journey is about to end, but he realizes that their journey has no end, that they were living on a perpetual camping trip, laying out mattresses and blankets as he was doing, yet they had community while he had none. Another favorite story is how he slogged through the mosquito-filled swamps on Malawi trying to find the border into Tanzania. I recommend this book to anyone interested in not only a voyage but a search, a discovery. It is well told and brisk reading

I’m very happy to see that it is now available on Kindle so others may share my experience. The writing will capture you and make you feel like you are riding alongside the author. It will inspire you to test your limits, even if not on a bicycle. It will show you the people of the world from a different vantage point than experienced by the typical traveler (‘Up Close’ as the title says), and this view will erode your stereotypes and prejudices. Yes, we all have them, even those who believe themselves to be fair minded, because these abstractions are mental shortcuts that help us to navigate our social worlds. But, navigating around the world with Kameel Nasr helps to obviate the need for those shortcuts because you will have new, concrete images of people from many distant lands. The book actually inspired me to travel around the world – not on a bicycle, my quads are definitely not up to the task. But, I was still able to meet local people and to discover the essential humanity shared by all. By daniel clauser As a recent college grad, I was looking for some insights into travelling the world and stumbled across this book. What a find! Before I read this book I was planning on taking one of those cookie-cutter European vacations that seem to be a right of passage for all American college grads. But now after reading what kind of adventure can be had on your own (and at a fraction of the price), I have now decided to make my own path across the world. The author paints a beautiful picture of the world and those who live within it. It is less about bicycling and more about what it is like to see the world and the people you meet along the way. In a way it reminds me of the gonzo journalism Hunter S. Thompson used to do, but without the drugs and chicanery. Although I am not a cyclist, I cannot wait to take Kameel’s approach to seeing the world one person at a time.
