Extremely helpful resource for nursing students By horrorgirldonna This is another excellent study guide from Jon Haws and NRSNG.com to help students learn to think critically and apply reasoning to the nursing process. Using real case studies that surround the more commonly seen diagnosis, this book will help you improve clinical reasoning, become more confident when answering Meg-Surg questions, become more familiar with common disorders, learn how to answer the toughest NCLEX questions, improve prioritization, and master the nursing process in clinical settings. The case study layout includes, the client case, questions regarding the background of the patient, and case progression. It also includes additional critical thinking questions to answer and rationalize. The diseases and disorders included in this guide are end stage renal disease, congestive heart failure, cirrhosis, pancreatitis, and others.Like all the study guides from NRSNG.com this one is well-organized and written in a plain, no-fluff manner that allows you to retain and recall the information when needed. It is invaluable when it comes to being prepared to answer the tough exam questions.Great job and highly recommended to anyone who is currently studying nursing.

Well presented, thought provoking cases, excellent resource for nursing students By Kitty Smith This is a well organized, in depth case study book for nursing students to help them learn how to best take care of complicated patients. Each case takes you through patient background and medical history, as well as current symptoms and vitals upon check-in. It then asks critical thinking questions such as which type of factors would the patient be able to change with rehab or what the signs and symptoms are that would indicate a positive outcome after treatment. A rationale is then provided to help further understanding. All fifteen of the real life cases are well presented and thought provoking, and will certainly help the student become familiar with each disorder. One of my nieces is currently in an LVN program and I think this will be a valuable addition to her learning resources.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great study tool By Jana M. Contreras Excellent resource. This book makes the reader be able to voice the knowledge they have. "If you can teach it, you know it" is a true statement, so if you can explain the subject by answering the questions, you know it. This book is clearly written, provides thorough rationales, and would most certainly be a superlative addition to your study tools.

Doug Pitassi's 15 Best Restaurants in Portland, by Doug Pitassi, Douglas Pitassi

About the Author Doug Pitassi is something of a Renaissance man, possessing the kind of broad industry experience that has made him more than qualified to offer his expert insight on topics ranging from gastronomical to nautical in nature. Mr. Pitassi’s vast experience and varied interests have enabled him to spend time in places like Galveston and Portland, earning praise from his Texas neighbors for his boating expertise and gratitude from his Oregon neighbors for his unique insight into the Portland culinary scene. While Mr. Pitassi has always demonstrated a keen interest in learning about any subject at all, his knowledge of Portland’s restaurant culture has been the source of his most recent professional efforts. As the author of a book detailing the best that Portland’s dining scene has to offer, Mr. Pitassi has positioned himself yet again as an expert in an industry undergoing exponential growth in the Pacific Northwest. In his most recent book, Mr. Pitassi offers a detailed analysis of Portland’s best-known restaurants along with some of the more underrated options he feels are deserving of equal praise. The result is a book that is ideal for both longtime Portland residents along with any first-timer completely unfamiliar with the area. Mr. Pitassi’s professional career is remarkable in its diversity, but that does not mean he is deserving of the “Jack of all trades, master of none” tag. His professional output has indeed been quite varied, but Mr. Pitassi has earned a reputation for his full investment in every endeavor in order to gain the kind of knowledge necessary to become an all-encompassing resource for others. Doug Pitassi was born and raised in Galveston, Texas. He owned a boat repair company before moving to Portland in 2014. Lifelong foodie and lover of tasty things, Pitassi explores the region looking for good food. I like to travel and have in the past picked some places on a whim and found them to be quite dreadful which just ruins your whole trip. I find I could trust Mr. Pitassi's judgement since he does live in the Portland area and listed several different kinds of places to eat, anywhere from sushi to steak.

The first part of this book describes the behaviour of that "special" category of drivers who have diplomatic privileges on the roads of various countries. Some of them drink & drive, some of them are guilty of speeding, and some just don’t like to pay the parking fees. Amazingly, it is often not possible to prosecute them for this, and so the countries where these diplomats reside lose substantial amounts of money on fines alone. So diplomats of which countries violate the law most often? And diplomats of which countries almost never violate the law? Which countries openly share statistics about foreign diplomats violations, and which countries conceal them? This book answers these questions and includes frank comments from the diplomats themselves that sheds light on the behavior of their colleagues from different countries. You’ll read answers from the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of 22 countries: Vatican, Great Britain, Switzerland, Singapore, Poland, Norway, New Zealand, Moldavia, Malaysia, Luxembourg, Lithuania, Liechtenstein, Kazakhstan, Ireland, Georgia, Finland, Denmark, Czech Republic, Croatia, Brazil, Bulgaria, and Armenia. These data have never been published before, and so some of the stories are quite incredible and shocking. At the end you will also be able to clearly see who holds the top spots in law violation amongst the diplomatic corps. In the second part of the book we will talk about personae non gratae. Usually the motives for declaring someone a persona non grata are this diplomat’s hostility towards the government of the state of residence, interference with its internal affairs, disrespect of its laws, customs etc. Often the phrase “for impermissible activities incompatible with diplomatic status” lurks behind it, which can also mean an espionage charge. Read on to find about about some fascinating details associated with this somewhat unpleasant status.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Cute & enjoyable. By Siarhei An experienced diplomat once told me that multilateral diplomacy is a weird shadow theatre.Diplomacy is a weird business. One day you're declaring war and rallying the troops...the next day it's "show me the money."Diplomacy is a weird skill, and I have a suspicion that most DM intuitively house rule around the nonsensical results it can produce. Here are some excerpts:a)“As for drunk driving, this is rather an outrageous violation and everyone will find out about this through mass media. I cannot thing of a single incident hushed up, simply because people like “hot” news regardless of the country. Even if the diplomat is lucky enough to cause no damage to any people, he or she will surely be recalled. When it comes to speeding, I cannot give a specific answer… Sometimes it is a matter of office-related necessity, though such situations are rather infrequent. Failure to pay for parking seems the most complicated issue. Some governments disregard it and charge no fines, while others give parking tickets, which is obviously hopeless. In some countries, diplomatic privileges do not cover parking. As a result, it is the traffic violator and not the diplomatic mission who is to pay...”b)“The highest number of the recorded offences was caused by the vehicles belonging to the following Embassies: Iran (14), United States (10), Germany (8), China (6), Russia (6), France (6), Belarus (6), Georgia (3), Turkmenistan (3), Greece (2), Italy (1), India (1), Thailand (1), Romania (1) and Bulgaria (1). “c)“The vehicles belonging to the Embassy of Lebanon, Canada, Norway and Uruguay consulates have not been involved in traffic rules violations.”d)“There is a single trigger – a sense of permissiveness; a sense of having access to what is inaccessible in any other context. I am not going to tell you what wealthy European country it is, but one of our diplomats told me that they drove drunk occasionally in the evenings because they can.”e)” The diplomat is human, after all! (Question mark). Not every diplomat is a diplomat (in fact, charity and diplomacy are the best covering activities ever). I graduated from the School of Foreign Military Information... Am I a military journalist, a translator? NO! I don’t think we have the institution of young professional diplomats! Who wants to go to Burundi :) where a new revolution breaks out every month? Everybody knows everybody in those hot countries... Even though I had a lot of useful contacts, I had to spend much time and effort to take root in a prosperous European country...”f) “The two major traffic violation triggers are impunity in diplomatic missions and drunk driving. When diplomats violate traffic rules, they leave the scene under the protection of their diplomatic mission to mispresent the accident to appear innocent using their contacts. However, sometimes diplomats take public transport and emergency service lanes to avoid traffic jams (either out of necessity or just feeling reluctant to wait). In Belgium, the police round up diplomatic traffic violators at weekends).By the way, sometimes the reason underlying traffic violations is legal and other agencies being reluctant to deal with such offenders. Therefore, to solve this problem it is necessary to review the international standards, which would make appropriate measures to bring violators to justice possible. Specific methods should be adopted for detaining traffic violators should be developed for every country”.p.s.By the way, diplomacy is espionage and military diplomacy is military espionage.

In the Spider's Web is set in Ash Meadow, a prison for children in Washington State. The story centers on Caitlin Weber, a girl who, in collusion with her mother and four other children, murdered her mother's employer. While the murder is briefly depicted, it is with what happens afterward to two of the perpetrators, particularly Caitlin, that the story is primarily focused. Arrested less than a week following the murder, Caitlin and her best friend, Sonia, are charged as adults and each sentenced to 22 years in prison. Caitlin was 13 years old; Sonia was 14 years and one week old. Neither had been in legal trouble before. Upon sentencing, they were sent to Ash Meadow where they would stay until they turned 18. Then they would be transferred to Purdy, a prison for adult women, to serve the remainder of their sentences. In the Spider's Web focuses on Caitlin's experience in Ash Meadow and on her relationship with Jerry, her rehabilitation counselor (and the author of this book). Part I of the book provides the reader with a feel for the prison environment that awaits Caitlin, and introduces the reader to the staff and inmates of the Maximum Security unit where Caitlin will live for most of her time in Ash Meadow. Part I also introduces the reader to the relationships between staff, and between staff and the administrators who govern the prison, which relationships will have an effect on Caitlin.Part II begins with Caitlin's arrival at the prison and the start of her relationship with Jerry. The relationship is rocky at first, because Jerry has the same name and is around the same age as the man Caitlin helped to kill. Although Jerry does not know this at first, Caitlin is effectively haunted by her victim. She is assailed by guilt over what she did, and anger toward her mother whose idea the murder was. She struggles with depression and has contemplated suicide. She wants t deny responsibility for her role in the murder and resents Jerry for bringing up the past when she wants to forget it. But as their relationship progresses, they develop respect and even love for each other, she for him because he does not judge her and because she senses that in some way he is like her; he for her because, despite her sometimes feeling overwhelmed by prison life, something in her insists that she keep trying to better herself, to make life tolerable for herself even in confinement. He is the surrogate for the father who abandoned her when she was small, and she is the daughter he lost when he was divorced. Eventually Caitlin is transferred to the adult prison at Purdy and Jerry resigns from his job. In an epilogue, the reader sees that their relationship, while changed, continues. Leonard Chang, author of Triplines and Over the Shoulder, provides this testimonial: "In the Spider's Web takes a penetrating look into the lives of juvenile prisoners caught in their traumatized circumstances and struggling to maintain a semblance of normalcy. Jerome Gold has transformed his years of experience as a rehab counselor into a riveting and important narrative, offering insight into a difficult world that is at times harrowing as well as deeply moving. This is a resonant and significant book." Note: In the Spider's Web is the second book to be published concerning the author's experience as a counselor in Ash Meadow. The first book was published under the title Paranoia & Heartbreak: Fifteen Years in a Juvenile Facility. A third book is underway.

In the Spider's Web: A Nonfiction Novel, by Jerome Gold

Review Jerome Gold calls In the Spider's Web a nonfiction novel. In it, he depicts the routines and characters of a prison for juveniles, centering on one young woman in particular. All the events really happened and are drawn from his years working as a rehabilitation counselor at the institution he calls Ash Meadow… As might be expected, the stories Gold relates are often disturbing, but they are beautifully told from a sober and compassionate perspective. Caitlin Weber was convicted of the murder of her mother's employer. Caitlin and four other teens, under the direction of her mother, to whom Caitlin was said to be uniquely loyal, [killed the man] when Caitlin was thirteen. At fourteen, Caitlin entered Ash Meadow, where Jerry requested to be assigned as her case manager. The two became very close as Caitlin worked toward recovering from her trauma, establishing healthier relationships, and ultimately, being rehabilitated. Gold also details the drama and dysfunction of staff relationships. Gifted and caring counselors do immensely good work there, but at the other end of the spectrum lie abuse, neglect, and failures that are as troubling to read about as the lives of the young prisoners. Gold's characters are fully developed and complex; even juvenile murderers are surprisingly sympathetic once their full stories are told… The tone of Gold's remembrances is wondering, quiet, and contemplative, and also ofter searingly angry or hurt. Caitlin's story does not wrap up neatly, because it is true. But in Gold's tender, precise prose, Caitlin comes vividly to life and gains the fair consideration he asks for her. --Julia Jenkins, Foreword ReviewsThere is quiet anger that grinds through prison writing. A compulsion to tell the world what goes on inside locked wards, accompanied by the equally powerful sense that anyone willing to look may be suspect. Jerome Gold, who writes of the years he spent working in a Washington state juvenile lockup, describes these feelings with sharp economy in his spare, sometimes devastating new book, In the Spider's Web: There was nobody on the outside I could talk to, nobody willing to listen to something like this, he says after learning that the newest resident in his cottage is a boy convicted of killing his younger brother. The depravity stuns even this veteran of the system. Yet almost instantly comes the punishing afterthought: The story had struck so deep that I would not want to talk about it, that I would be angry with anyone who would listen, that I would regard him or her as a voyeur. The setting is Ash Meadow, a pseudonym for the state facility where Gold spent 15 years counseling teenagers convicted of murder, rape and other crimes. The kids in Spider's Web are all first-name pseudonyms, too, though the author's note says that everything in what Gold calls a nonfiction novel happened in real life. Stark realism is the book's greatest strength. In the Spider's Web reads like a diary, rat-ta-ta-tat facts interspersed with passages of sudden eloquence. What plot does exist centers on staff intrigue who's incompetent, who's abusive and the relationship that develops between our narrator, Jerry, and a girl named Caitlin, convicted at 13 of helping her mother murder an employer. Their friendship becomes pivotal for Jerry, but we learn this through an economy of personal detail that will leave some readers wanting more.... Gold, who also wrote Paranoia & Heartbreak: Fifteen Years in a Juvenile Facility, is clearly committed to the material and wants readers to see these young felons as human beings. His terse description tends to undercut that effort. But sometimes style and substance come together with stark power, as in this passage about a 14-year-old boy's confusion at receiving a birthday card from his grandmother: He couldn't believe he was only fourteen; he had even forgotten it was his birthday. He felt so old. In interviews, Gold has said that he ultimately left the job out of anger at a system built for orienting kids to prison, not a life outside. Honesty like that is the most valuable aspect of his work, and Gold is at his best when he lets it rip: During my time at Ash Meadow, I had come to despise such expressions as 'healing process' and 'reconciliation' and 'forgiveness.' In my experience, people did not heal; rather, scar tissue built up over the surface of the wound so that air could not get to it, but the injury was always there, he writes. And if the cause of conflict or pain was too great to think about, they compressed it until they could hide it in a part of themselves that they did not visit, and this was called 'forgiveness.' --Claudia Rowe, The Seattle Times

About the Author Jerome Gold is the author of fourteen books, including The Moral Life of Soldiers and the memoir, Paranoia & Heartbreak: Fifteen Years in a Juvenile Facility. Russell Banks said about this book: I ve finished reading Jerome Gold s terrific book cover to cover without a break... It s a powerful and very tenderhearted book without a soupçon of sentimentality. Unforgettable! Mr. Gold s novels include Sergeant Dickinson, about which the New York Times Book Review said: [It] belongs on the high, narrow shelf of first-rate fiction about battlefield experience. He has published stories, essays, reviews and poems in Chiron Review, Moon City Review, Fiction Review, Boston Review, Hawaii Review, and other journals.

Patients taking medicines and doctors prescribing them must be puzzled by the hail of criticism that has descended on drug companies in the last few years. But it shouldn't be overlooked that these companies have contributed enormously to healthcare over many years. Ron Stark looks back over a lifetime spent in medical research - much of it as a troubleshooter in pharma. One of his stories from behind the scenes relates to a small, young and enthusiastic team who are heading for crunch time. Having taken on a challenge that has defeated academics and clinicians, they're searching for a treatment that will stop patients with lung disease feeling short of breath. An array of unlikely characters and unexpected events all contributed to a nail-biting finish and the final outcome. A book about real pharma written by a physician who has actually worked there! From Farms to Pharma brings to light some amazing and unusual individuals who are committed to finding remedies for maladies. This book is aimed at a broad audience with varying amounts of medical knowledge and it will appeal to anyone with an interest in the human side of the pharmaceutical industry.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Interesting biography of a pharmaceutical researcher By Steve G I received this book for free via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This book is the autobiography of a physician and research scientist within the pharmaceutical industry. Ron Stark writes in a conversational tone and any science is well-explained. Stark neither praises nor condemns the industry, he just describes his professional life and some snippets of his personal life. But it does seem that Stark has thus far led a very interesting life. Stark is a good story-teller and I found the book interesting. My major criticism is that sometimes he will relate an anecdote that seems to end without a punchline. Nonetheless I liked the book and I recommend it for anyone interested in the research side of the pharmaceutical industry.

Examination of Peripheral Nerve Injuries: An Anatomical Approach, by Stephen Russell

Review "This book is written succinctly, remains comprehensive in scope, and is exceptionally well organized, easy to read, and well illustrated. This book is similar to Greenberg's Handbook of Neurosurgery in which the essentials are distilled and concisely presented. The anatomy, function (as shown by the clinical examination), and clinical syndromes are described beautifully using a combination of text, schematic illustrations, and photographs of subjects under actual examinations. In summary, this gem of a book provides both the novice and seasoned clinician with a means of rapidly learning and reviewing the essentials of peripheral nerve anatomy and function in an extremely succinct and well-organized form. It is aptly named and its price ($49.95) makes it a bargain. It can be conveniently carried in one's coat or jacket pocket where it deserves to be."--Journal of Neurosurgery

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. lots of details By JM I'm interested in being able to follow and palpate nerve pathways throughout the body, but particularly in the limbs. This book was very helpful with that even though the nerve descriptions weren't continuous from nerve root to termination. Rather, they were described within a regional context but the sections were easy to connect and offered an understanding of each nerve's relationship to bones, joints, fasciae, muscles and blood vessels.
