By Samadhi This book is the next best thing to having Cat Ellis sitting in your living room or better yet, helping you make some of the tinctures, extracts or salves with you in person. From start to finish this is written for a time you might not have access to conventional medicine but need it. That said, you will realize as you begin reading you will be gathering materials soon after reading. The only thing that would be better would be having every one of these salves, tinctures or extracts already made up in a corner cupboard ready to use.This book is written as though Cat Ellis is talking to you. She has done her research and not only has she covered ingredients, how-to instructions, when various things might be appropriate to use, she obviously knows human physiology and anatomy, the herbs she speaks about and their effects on the body. She has backed up her work with resources and studies, and is very specific about how to prepare nature's medicines for use safely.What I appreciate is the way Cat Ellis talks to you throughout the book. She draws from real life experience and hours of research and hard work. She also brings home the fact that this is not always a substitute for conventional medicine. Some things cannot be helped by herbal preparations and require immediate hospital care- if it's available. If not, this is a book I will be happy to have with me and hopefully I will be able to gather enough ingredients to start making my own 'Nature's First Aid Kit' right away. I won't be sorry.If I had to want anything more, I'd want a plastic cover for this book because it's going to get handled quite a bit.

72 of 79 people found the following review helpful. the book fails to mention widely-available North American wild plants like Yellow Mustard By Infinite Loop Found book to be somewhat interesting to certain degree but lacking critical info. and basically ignoring the entire world of traditional Native American and Appalachian folk medicine. Native Americans often used live plants as-is with very little preparation beyond a little cutting, grinding and squeezing. Most of the herbs discussed in this book have to be purposely grown or purchased -- something that may not be a viable option in a prepper / survival situation where mobility is a factor. You gotta use whatever is in your immediate environment. Likewise, most of the remedies covered in the book require days, if not weeks, to prepare -- also not an option for someone on the move.Major pet peeve: the book fails to mention widely-available North American wild plants like Yellow Mustard, Garlic Mustard, Alfalfa, American Mistletoe, Antelope Sage, Aspen, Hops, Mint and Bloodroot, just to name a few. I pulled these from a list of traditional Native American medicinal plants; the kinds of plants a survivalist / prepper can easily find growing along country dirt roads, fallow fields and forested areas throughout most of North America. Yeah, space is limited and, as a writer, you have to draw the line somewhere -- you can't cover them all -- but a lot of this stuff grows wild all over the place and just wasn't mentioned in the book. Your typical old fallow field or open natural grassland can literally be a drug store if you know what to look for and how to use it.The author did a fairly good job of showing how to prepare the various medicines and remedies mentioned but I felt the focused too much on complex preparations as opposed to plants and herbs that can be used as is or with minor preparation work. If you're into doing this kind of stuff at home, then I suppose the book could be a passable how-to reference guide.Big disappointment: this isn't a "prepper" book per se. When the "Big One" hits there won't be ANY functioning stores. The traditional market economy will have fallen completely apart; no Walgreens, no Walmart, no internet, no Amazon, no Home Depot, no health food stores and no place to buy herbs or anything else. If you live in an urban area, you're going to have to move to the country. We're going back to basic pioneering days my friends, it's going to be Woods-Craft 101! You're going to be focused on living day-to-day, there'll be no time to grow herbs or make your own alcohol and apple vinegar.If I'm traveling through the countryside, what essential plants should I grab along the way to put into my medicine bundle? With that mindset, I had all kinds of questions while reading, for example: in a pinch could one use plain old common red clay in place of Bentonite? Would that work?The author did a decent job covering the preparation for each remedy; that's fine, but what if I'm out in a simple cabin in the woods and don't have access to apple vinegar, grain alcohol and a fully-functional kitchen? I don't have time to mix up a batch of XYZ and let it cure / ferment for two weeks, I need something NOW! What could I find in a couple of hours of tromping around a typical field, wet land or woods in North America? How would I extract oil from Birch bark to make mosquito repellant?. How would I use skunk Cabbage to heal some nasty briar cuts?. That's the kind of stuff I was expecting, but the book came up short.Some color illustrations of the various herbal plants would have been helpful for those of us new to the hobby. Maybe a short section on how to create & maintain a herb garden? This book seems oriented more towards your typical home-gardening DYI herbalist as opposed to a prepper / survivalist forced to live in the wild. If you come across a copy at your local library (as I did), I'd say it'd be worthwhile to bring home for a quick peruse but can't recommend buying it. By Liz Winter Good book, not necessarily new information (if you enjoy reading herbal medicine books, that is) but it is well organized and info is presented in a very reader-friendly manner. Although the book is written by a prepper and for preppers, it doesn't have the sense of urgent doom and gloom that so many others have. Just good, common sense herbal medicine information that can benefit anyone--whether they are expecting the end of times or not.

His knowledge of international intelligence agencies, military technology and politics is undeniably second to none. There is a plethora of grounded characters from such a diversity of backgrounds that I almost needed to take notes and found myself going back in the book to check who was working for who, and what they were up to.The stage is set brilliantly in Russia & North Korea as we see inside Putin's head and the soon to be crowned leader Kim Jong un. An irate Putin's gold has sunk to the bottom of the sea and Kim Jong un has a long term plan to gain North Korea respect from the West. From there on in you are left guessing as to how the two main story lines are going to pan out and come together.High-tech assassins employed by the Federal Reserve & North Korea's "Seedbearing strategy" of infiltration make this a bang on up to date thriller. Due to the multiple sub-plots and the complex political picture portrayed Joseph wastes no time on frilly description and gets right to the heart of international espionage. Definitely recommend highly to anyone who likes political thrillers with a bit of meat.

Interesting and expertly crafted thriller By Jon Erebus In "Putin's Gold", the final installment of the author's "Korea Trilogy", Mr. Joseph again demonstrates his striking ability to present dramatic narratives built around real-world events. The narrative is marked by the author's deep knowledge of technical considerations; every plane, gun and car is consistently and expertly referred to in detail. This greatly contributes to the text's realistic credibility.But technical knowledge does not amount to much for a novelist without a corresponding talent for characterization; here too, Mr. Joseph delivers. His detailed and sensible descriptions of the emotional development of Kim Jong-un is fascinating reading, and a territory you seldom see contemporary authors venture into.All in all, "Putin's Gold" is a stunning conclusion to the "Korea Trilogy", and another great introduction to Mr. Joseph's writing.

Joseph's story of the involvement of North Korea's Kim Jong un with Putin, in his operations, are just one example of Joseph's knowledge and ability to explain. The analogous story of Kim Jon un's interest in Billy Becker, the fictional version of NBA All-Star Dennis Rodman, is a great mechanism of story-telling that Joseph used to speak the probable truths of a situation in fictional terms. The entire book reflects the corruption and powerplays of authoritarian figures working in collusion with Vladimir Putin. A gripping look at power politics and greed.

21 of 22 people found the following review helpful. Indispensible for building camp and cook fires. By John Ayers There are plenty of sources that tell you how to make a fire. There are plenty of books on camping, Boy Scout Handbooks and websites all describe firebuilding, or woodcraft, in one way or another. But I still had a time of getting a good campfire going. If the wood was dry then it would start right up, but often turn to smoldering logs quickly. Or we would have nothing available but wet wood. And then there's the "fire ring", which just as often as not is an overturned truck wheel rim. Half of the time I just struggled to get the fire going and the other half keeping it going. Sure I knew that a fire needs fuel, it needs air and it needs heat, but I still almost always came up short.My able bodied camping assistant had to stand by and watch me curse and throw chunks of wood as I fought to prove that I was a real camper! She decided to take matters into her own hands and got me a book. GASP, did I really need a book on camp fires?? Well, this book isn't about camp fires, it's called Camp Cookery, by Horace Kephart and it was originally published in 1910. Keep in mind that this was when people went camping to go way back into the wilderness to shoot or catch something to eat. It covers camp cooking tools, such as the reflector oven and folding broiler. Mr. Kephart advocates a lot of lard and has a chapter on cooking fresh killed game, like bear and squirrel. But the chapter on building fires is invaluable.I followed Mr. Kephart's advice on building a quick cookfire. I gathered twigs like he suggested, built them like it is described in the book. I lit it off and within a couple of minutes had a roaring fire with no further tinkering. The same thing happened every time I built a fire. I was sold. The rest of the chapter talks about the differences between a cook fire and a camp fire. It also describes what woods are good and for what situations. This chapter alone makes the whole book worth acquiring if you're serious about your campfire.Other chapters cover cooking gear, making breads and cooking fruits and vegetables, in addition to meat, poultry and game.

Donovan If you already own kepharts "camping & woodcraft" then dont waste your money on this book. it has all just been taken from "camping & woodcraft"If you dont have it then its a very interesting book.

It's interesting to see how resourceful people were in the past...where they used basic common sense and ingenuity to construct camping equipment. If you are a prepper...this is a good book to take a look at.
