Garabed Hagop Aaronian was Armenian, yet served in the Turkish Army as an Engineer-Officer--this, in fact, is how he was able to survive and write Under The Shadow Of Death, his personal record of the Armenian genocide. His account takes an inside view of the atrocities he and many Armenians suffered. G.H. Aaronian vividly testifies to the horror of the torture and annihilation of his friends and family while describing moments of hope when he transformed the landscape of the genocide to help many people. He possessed a will to survive that was remarkable while earning credibility and respect from all those who came in contact with him. In his own words: "It is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, and may God have mercy upon the souls of those innocent people, my people, who suffered and died, many not even give the dignity of a grave. Lest their memory be forgotten by those who escaped the Jehennem (hell or a place of suffering), and for the generations to come, LET THIS BE A REMINDER." Aaronian's story is a warning of the depravity of the human condition and the hope offered by those who stand against it.

Review The best account of the Armenian Holocaust ever written. A must read for every Armenian who wants to understand the gruesome facts as they really happened...Professor Christiansen. --UCLA Professor

About the Author Garabed Hagop Aaronian was born on March 20, 1886, in the village of Husenik, in Kharpert, Turkey. Garabed was the third of six sons and two daughters born to Altoon and Hagop Aaronian. Two of his brothers, Aharon and Levon, died in the Turkish massacre of World War I. He attended Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey, with the aid of a scholarship. After more than three years of college, on February 21, 1915 he was drafted into the Turkish Army and was sent to Mount Amanos in Cilicia to work as an Engineer-Officer and as Adjutant to Akiah Bey, being directly responsible for the construction of roads that had to pass over the mountain range. Following his discharge from service and graduation from Robert College, he worked for Socony Oil. He immigrated to his dreamland, the United States of America, in 1923, and initially settled in Providence, Rhode Island, where his eldest brother Alep and family resided. In 1929 he journeyed from Providence to Marseille, France, where he proposed to and married Perouze, a young lady he knew before, who was the daughter of Lucia and Garabed Parsekian. He brought his bride back to the United States and settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where he worked for Bethlehem Steel. In 1933, they moved to Youngstown, Ohio, where he worked for Truscon Steel. Shortly thereafter, due to the depressive state of the economy, Garabed and Perouze were forced to once again relocate with their two children to Highland Park, Michigan, where he was happily employed by the firm Griffels and Vallet as a Civil Engineer for 18 years. Finally in September 1954, a long time dream was consummated. The Aaronian family relocated themselves to California, taking up permanent residence in Altadena. In 1955, a hardback book he wrote in Armenian pertaining to his hometown, Husenik, was published. Additionally, he thoroughly researched and made his family tree going back nine generations. Garabed Aaronian may be remembered by the older Armenians as he wrote articles for approximately 45 years in both the Hairenik and the Asbarez newspapers. He died May 3, 1983.

Read Ebook Trauma in Schools and Communities: Recovery Lessons from Survivors and Responders, by William Steele

Trauma in Schools and Communities uses the power of first-hand, autobiographical narratives to illustrate the advantages and pitfalls of specific interventions implemented in the wake of tragedies. This book addresses short- and long-term impacts of traumatic events and the challenges both survivors and responders face, using case studies from the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing; the Gulf War; the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks; Hurricanes Katrina and Rita; student suicides; the killing of a teacher; and the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary, Virginia Tech, and Chardon, Ohio, among others. Each story features reactions and lessons that are unique and support specific, multidisciplinary, structured interventions that should be a part of every crisis team’s protocol and every community’s recovery effort. An appendix features a summary of the lessons learned, a "what if?" scenario, time-specific trauma recovery interventions, a fan-out meeting agenda, a traumatic event crisis intervention plan, and answers to questions commonly asked by students about suicide.

Trauma in Schools and Communities: Recovery Lessons from Survivors and Responders, by William Steele

Review

"Trauma in Schools and Communities is an exciting book that truly embraces the strategy of approaching community traumas from an interdisciplinary perspective. Bringing so many voices to this collaborative project exemplifies the spirit of best practices in disaster planning for schools and communities. I highly recommend it as a resource for anyone who is responsible for developing and implementing disaster-response plans. Perhaps the most important lessons that we learn from reading this book is that we do not have all the answers to effective disaster intervention . . . and that our most important teachers are the courageous survivors and responders who have emerged from the maelstrom of a disaster to share with us the lessons they learned in their trial by fire." Lennis G. Echterling, PhD, professor and the doctoral coordinator of counseling programs, department of graduate psychology, James Madison University

"The compelling stories and lessons in this book draw the reader’s attention to the clear and undeniable fact that trauma-based strategies will be the most effective way to help students, staff, and community recover and move through devastating critical incidents. Learning from the lessons presented in this book will most certainly allow schools to more quickly get back to the business of teaching their students the academics necessary to succeed in life, as well as strategies to help them cope with the ever changing and often chaotic life circumstances they will undoubtedly face." Nancy Buyle, MA, LPC, NBCC, LSW, school safety/student assistance consultant, Macomb Intermediate Schools, Michigan

"Dr. Steele nails it. The impact that untreated trauma has on students in our schools and our communities has grown, and indeed impacts education and their productivity as citizens. It is extremely important that educators and community resources are trauma informed before entering into any type of trauma work with our students. Properly treated, we see an increase in resiliency; improperly handled, the problem can be magnified. This is an excellent resource for all." Margaret DeLillo-Storey, PsyD, PCC, TLC-S, certified trauma consultant/supervisor and clinical counselor for Perry Local Schools, Massillon, Ohio

About the Author

William Steele, PsyD, MSW, is the founder of the National Institute for Trauma and Loss in Children (TLC), established in 1990 and a program of the Starr Global Learning Network since 2009. He trained the 6,000 TLC-certified trauma specialists now practicing TLC’s interventions in fifty-five countries and developed, authored, field-tested, and researched trauma-specific, evidence-based school and agency intervention programs for children, adolescents, and adults.

Valuable Information for Facing Community-wide Trauma By Sharon Cohen As a long-term resident of Newtown and personally concerned about the impact of our shooting and the lessons learned from this event, I greatly appreciated William Steele's book. Reading first-hand comments from people involved with a number of different tragedies made the book more personal and effective. Unfortunately, violence that impacts large numbers of people--in schools, churches, malls and theaters--is increasing in the United States. We are just beginning to learn how to cope with such horrible events, and books such as this one provide valuable information.

By Amazon Customer Comprehensive in most areas, glaringly deficit in others for example carcinoid tumors, more aggressive nhl variants, bladder preservation ,neo- adjuvant breast in the her2neu + patient . Some of the chemotherapy regimens are outmoded and in some common cancers such as breast there is a dearth of regimens .Certain chapters could be eliminated or consolidated eg Nutritional Support and a chapter addressing rarer neoplasms or clinical scenarios added. Overall I would definitely purchase the book again as it is well organized ,reads well and is of utility in the areas in which it is comprehensive.

Excerpt from Manual of American Grape-GrowingSeventy-nine books on grapes enrich the pomology of North America, not counting numerous state and national publications. Pomological writers in America have been partial to the grape, for other fruits do not fare nearly so well. Twenty-two books are devoted to the strawberry, fourteen to the apple, to the peach nine, cranberry eight, plum five, pear nine, quince two, loganberry one, while the cherry, raspberry, and blackberry are not once separated from other fruits in special books. Thus, though a comparative newcomer among the fruits of the country, the grape has been singled out for a treatise more times than all other fruits of temperate climates combined - seventy-nine books on the grape, seventy on all other fruits. This statement of partiality does not lead to an apology for a new book on the grape. There is urgent need for a new book. But three of the seventy-nine treatises on this fruit are contemporary, and all but one, a handbook on training, are records from vanished minds. Methods change so rapidly and varieties multiply so fast, that to keep pace there must be new books on fruits every few years. Besides, the types of grapes are so diverse, and different soils, climates, and treatments produce such widely dissimilar results, that many books are required to do justice to this fruit - the vineyard should be seen through many eyes.Commercial grape-growing is now a great industry in America, and deserves a treatise of its own.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Belgian Cook-BookThe recipes in this little book have been sent by Belgian refugees from all parts of the United Kingdom, and it is through the kindness of these correspondents that I have been able to compile it. It is thought, also, that British cooking may benefit by the study of Belgian dishes. The perfect cook, like Mrs. 'Arris or the fourth dimension, is often heard of, but never actually found, so this small manual is offered for the use of the work-a-day and inexperienced mistress and maid. It is not written in the interests of millionaires. The recipes are simple, and most inexpensive, rather for persons of moderate means than for those who can follow the famous directions for a certain savory: "Take a leg of mutton," etc. A shelf of provisions should be valued, like lovemaking, not only for itself but for what it may become.Savories: If you serve these, let them be, like an ankle, small and neat and alluring. This dish is not obligatory; recollect that it is but a culinary work of supererogation.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The first part of the book narrates the story of a single mother from Georgetown in Guyana who made an appeal to help her son dying of kidney failure to obtain a kidney transplant which was not available in their country. They needed help to travel to India to get the transplant. The flyer appealing for help lands in the hands of a Guyanese-American, George Subraj, who is intrigued by this appeal. He seeks the help of Indian-born Transplant Surgeon, Dr. Rahul M. Jindal, who, in turn, organizes a medical team to perform the surgery. This is also a story of how Americans come together to save the life of a young man in Guyana, whose determined single mother refused to give up. In the second part of the book, the social aspects of transplantation are discussed which include medical compliance, anxiety and depression in kidney transplant recipients and social networks pertaining to kidney transplantation. In the third part of the book, the economics of kidney transplantation in developing countries are discussed, along with the economics of peritoneal versus hemodialysis, pre-emptive kidney transplantation for developing countries, health policy for treating renal failure in developing countries and finally commercialization of kidney transplantation - a problem which is increasing world-wide.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A must read book By L. Rodriguez I found this book interesting and heart-warming. It shows how one determined person with the help of administrators and local physicians can bring hope to a lot of people. Reading the book, took me into the streets of Georgetown, Guyana, into the village of Munesh Mangal, the central character of the book and then into the operating rooms of the hospital. The book proves that very advanced sophisticated surgical procedures can be introduced into a "developing country" by a determined group of physicians and philanthropists. Also of value are chapters in the second part of the book, where the author has discussed social aspects of transplantation are discussed which include medical compliance, anxiety and depression in kidney transplant recipients and social networks pertaining to kidney transplantation. The final section of the book will be useful for developing countries which may wish to learn from this experience. The chapters on the economics of peritoneal versus hemodialysis, pre-emptive kidney transplantation for developing countries, health policy for treating renal failure in developing countries and finally commercialization of kidney transplantation - a problem which is increasing world-wide.
