Jung's 20-volume Collected Works, 'The Psychology of the Transference' is a short, seemingly complex book which readily rewards the reader who perseveres and is unintimidated by Jung's lengthy sentences, the alchemical illustrations, or the numerous passages in Latin.Jung's subject is his discovery that the "great work" of the 16th and 17th century alchemists--a search for the 'philosopher's stone' of 'psychic wholeness' (as opposed to 'psychic perfection')--corresponds closely to the psychological process of the transference (a dynamic set of duo projections of unconscious psychic contents). The alchemical process mysteriously corresponds not only the transference possible between psychologist and patient, but between any two individuals who spontaneously (unconsciously) constellate some part of the other's psyche through normal human interaction. However, as with all of Jung's later work, the book's larger focus is the psychic evolution of the individual. The pivotal message of 'The Psychology of the Transference' is that the process of cautiously evolving one's consciousness to the hypothetical point of 'individuation' or 'integration,' is primarily a moral and ethical one. The book stresses that it is also a critically necessary process, however painful and potentially dangerous. In Jung's estimation, mankind has no choice but to accept the challenge of psychic evolution: the alternative is a perpetual present state of misunderstanding, hatred, suspicion, bigotry, oppression, war, and genocide.Like Freud, Jung believed that man's psyche contains an enormous multi-tier unconscious reservoir, one which not only dwarfs man's generally narrow consciousness but is also the matrix in which consciousness originated (thus the alchemical motto "high rests on low").The unconscious is the original abode of all drives, demons, and daimons, all instincts and angels, all creativity and appetites for destruction. Since many of its contents are unacceptable to modern man--the most foundational of these being the incest complex--these damned and rejected contexts are not and cannot be readily integrated into consciousness.Instead, they are spontaneously projected outward onto other human beings, social classes, institutions, and countries--onto any 'object' that is perceived as other and different from the self. No man can evolve his consciousness without first becoming aware of and retracting these projections and learning to comfortably accept them as his own dark potentialities. It is not simply of matter of leaving the instinctual man behind, but of learning to integrate the necessary if often unattractive instinctual and vital functions into consciousness before moving forward. Thus the process is one of refinement and accumulation and not one of elimination.Only the first major step in a series (Emerson: "Every ultimate fact is only the first of a new series"), the confrontation with and integration of the 'shadow' is often a harrowing and precarious process. If man accepts this task without ample preparation, inner fortification, and secure sense of identity (which he nonetheless must be willing to forgo), he may come to despise himself, lose all motivation, become morally degenerate, or commit suicide. But if he does not recognize, accept and take up his own cross, he will blame, and attempt to injure or destroy, other people, classes, races, or countries to eradicate the sense of indefinable angst, doubt, suspicion, and fear that impinges itself so relentlessly upon his psyche; as Jung perfectly expressed it, he will endlessly attempt to free himself of "that thing that thrusts itself tyrannically upon him in the stillness and loneliness of the night."Only after man has accepted and integrated his 'shadow' can he, 'reborn,' proceed rightfully ahead. It is this slow process ('make haste slowly' was another motto of the alchemists) of prudent illumination towards conscious realization of the "whole man," or "self," as Jung called it, that the alchemists referred to as "the great work," the highest single achievement of which man is capable. Thus, though the alchemists apparently sought to turn base metal into gold, "gold" was in truth a simple metaphor for successfully integrated consciousness. Clearly, most of mankind, finding the burden of unconsciousness easier to bear than the burden of conscious realization and responsibility, regrettably and understandably fails in even this initial step.As a result, man lives in a predominantly fallen world of near-animal existence.'The Psychology of the Transference' is one of the most concise and digestible books in Jung's oeuvre; its insights and wisdom are readily applicable to life in the 21st century. As in the balance of his previous eighteen titles, Jung presents the world as an incredible place of breathtaking depth, mystery, and meaning, most of which is lost on the average man, who typically lives in a state of permanent hibernation from objective reality. However, Jung's worldview is also one in which nature is infinitely strange and capable of continuous unexpected manifestations, unique hybrid creations, and monsters, simply because the process of psychic evolution is not only something man must willingly confront, but because it is a process which nature inexorably demands. It is to Jung's credit that with 'The Psychology of the Transference' he is able to present his ideas in direct, palatable, and useful fashion without dilution.A world of readers are blindly searching for this book, and turning instead to authors like Herman Hesse and Carlos Casteneda, 'New Age' crank authors whose work is merely plagiarism of Jung, or lesser psychologists who offer up Jung's ideas in vastly diluted form. 'The Psychology of the Transference,' a deep and hopeful book, is the source to which questing readers should turn.

McGarry Yes, "transference" was originally Freud's term, but Jung's use in this 1946 essay is expanded far beyond what Freud (or anyone practicing psychology today) could possibly recognize. For Jung, transference was about a person's relation with his or her Unconscious, and the spectrum of possible relationships extends from delusion to liberating insight. Thus, transference is not just about the patient's relationship to the therapist; rather, transference is ultimately about the individual's relationship with the whole of life. After an introductory section, Jung frames his essay as a commentary on the *Rosarium Philosophorum*, an alchemical text published in 1550. The text focuses on a series of ten drawings that will assuredly appear bizarre to folks unfamiliar with alchemical symbols; however, Jung's brilliant analysis demonstrates that these apparently monstrous images actually map out, symbolically, that path to inner liberation. Indeed, this essay, late in Jung's career, represents him at the height of his powers, synthesizing symbols from a variety of sources to create a text dense with insights into the fundamental problems of human life.

ONE OF JUNG'S LAST, BUT MOST IMPORTANT PSYCHOANALYTIC ESSAYS By Steven H Propp Jung states in the Foreword, "In this book I am concerned with the 'classical' form of transference and its phenomenology... It is not intended for the beginner who would first have to be instructed in such matters, but is addressed exclusively to those who have already gained sufficient experience from their own practice. My object is to provide some kind of orientation in this newly discovered and still unexplored territory, and to acquaint the reader with some of its problems."Here are some representative quotations from the book:"Suddenly (Freud) asked me out of the blue, 'And what do you think about the transference?' I replied with the deepest conviction that it was the alpha and omega of the analytical method, whereupon he said, 'Then you have grasped the main thing.'" (Pg. 8)"This solution is normal and satisfying in that the dogmatically formulated truths of the Christian Church express, almost perfectly, the nature of psychic experience." (Pg. 29)"Whenever an instinctive force---i.e., a certain sum of psychic energy---is driven into the background through a one-sided (in this case, exogamous) attitude on the part of the conscious mind, it leads to a dissociation of personality." (Pg. 67)"Intellectual responsibility seems always to have been the alchemists' weak spot, though a few of them tell us plainly enough how we are to regard their peculiar language." (Pg. 125)"The theoria of alchemy, as I think I have shown, is for the most part a projection of unconscious contents, or those archetypal forms which are characteristic of all pure fantasy-products, such as are to be met with in myths and fairy-tales..." (Pg. 15)

Managing Stroke: A Guide to Living Well After StrokeFrom MedStar NRH Press

From Library Journal The staff of the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC, has created an instructional guide for those who have suffered a stroke. With information on physical therapy, occupational therapy, and daily living skills, this is primarily a guide to rehabilitation for stroke patients or their families rather than a quick reference book or a guide to prevention. There are nice chapters on important issues like communication problems and managing the financial burden of stroke. Similar titles are Kip Burkman!s The Stroke Recovery Book (LJ 11/1/98) and Richard C. Senelick!s Living with Stroke (NTC/Contemporary Books, 1999), both of which are less academic and more appropriate for many library patrons. A little dry, and not very cohesive because the chapters were written by different staff members, Managing Stroke is nevertheless a valuable resource for patients and families. Recommended for hospital and consumer health libraries."Elizabeth Williams, Houston Acad. of Medicine$Texas Medical Ctr. Lib. Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Hillary Clinton’s Village is unlike any other book about Hillary Clinton, because it’s not about Hillary Clinton. It’s about her social policies. There is not a whiff of scandal in this book and it casts no aspersions on Mrs. Clinton’s character. It assumes that she is well-intentioned, but ultimately finds that her well-intentioned policies are largely ineffective, and sometimes downright detrimental to the people they were intended to help. Think of Hillary Clinton’s Village as “debate prep for the 2016 election.” Candidates for the House, the Senate, and the Presidency will all have to be prepared to answer one question: Does Big Government Work? In her 1996 book It Takes a Village, Mrs. Clinton advocated thirty-seven federal government programs that she claims will solve the problems previously addressed by our local institutions, or by our families. Thirty-five of them did not. Some federal government programs do work, but most of them usually fall short, or fail outright. We can fix our failures if we understand how they differ from our successes. In Hillary Clinton’s Village, Dr. Michael Stumborg identifies how they differ, and why successful local programs “fail-to-scale” to the federal level. He combines insightful analyses of both successful and failed federal programs, to include Mrs. Clinton’s favorites, with personal anecdotes, current events, and observations from philosophers as varied as Saul Alinsky and Jesus Christ, to show how Big Government programs are destined to fail if we continue to ignore why they fail-to-scale. Hillary Clinton’s Village is a must read if you want to win the debate about the role of Big Government in American family life.

Well reasoned analysis of progressive big-government policies By Amazon Customer If you are looking for an attack on how awful Hillary Clinton is, this book is not for you. If instead you are looking for a well reasoned analysis of progressive big government policies, as typified by the policies called for in Mrs. Clinton's book, this is a great place to start.Dr Stumborg applies his analytical skills to examine the foundations of progressive policy as typified in Mrs. Clinton's “It Takes a Village”. With his academic training as a physicist (PhD) coupled with his years working as an analyst, he artfully breaks down and explains policy ideas such as Family Medical Leave Act. A real benefit to having someone who is not a political or social scientist doing this analysis is clear explanations without resorting to academic jargon of those fields. End result is a rigorous policy analysis presented in clear and understandable English.Fans of talk radio will not find any 'red meat' with attacks on the character of Mrs Clinton, her husband or any other politician. I find this refreshing. As someone who works “inside the beltway”, I have friends and neighbors who are liberal to progressive. They are not bad or stupid people, just as I am not evil or immoral. We just disagree on policies on how to make the world a better place for our children. Both sides in policy debates will benefit from this example of a factual analysis without name calling of denigrating those who disagree. While “Hillary Clinton's Village” uses Mrs Clinton's “It Takes a Village” as a jumping off point, this is not a long book review itself nor does it limit itself to Mrs Clinton's policies. It is instead an explanation of how big government is not always the only solution, and seldom even a good solution. But it is not a call for radical libertarianism. As someone who served on active duty in the military and has worked as a civil servant (in the best sense of that title), Dr Stumborg displays a keen appreciation for where and when federal government is best solution. As he demonstrates over and over, depending on big government to provide one size fits all solutions leads to many unintended consequences that are often worse than the original 'problem'.

By Amazon Customer I am a physicist, and so I appreciated the simplicity of his hypothesis. Using non-partisan language, Dr. Stumborg clearly articulated the problems with big government. His discussion on Hayek (p. 26) could easily be framed as a Nash equilibrium demonstrating that the typical voter will always vote self-interest over principles, and so as long as politicians promise that which panders to self-interest, this will be a one-way train headed for a wreck. His analysis on McCrystal's view on compulsory one-year government service made me rethink my own position. On Pope Francis, this analysis was honest and refreshing; I could see a little more analysis on the balance in Biblical terms (e.g., social concerns of the prophets versus work ethic from the Wisdom books), but I know that might be an entirely new work. What was missing was how the local church works best for local problems, even on a global scale. I heartily recommend this book for partisans on either side of the aisle who are genuine about disentangling good intentions with positive results, because as Dr. Stumborg charges, they are not the same!

By Ric from New York Hillary Clinton’s Village is a comprehensive evaluation of why most federal government programs fail. Dr. Stumborg provides insight into the philosophical conflicts our founding fathers had between federal and state rights and why programs fail to scale. He discusses numerous examples of failed U.S. programs across virtually all agencies of the federal government. These programs show a consistent pattern of failing to scale at the federal level, a lack of metrics to measure performance and lack of competent leadership to take appropriate action.Given our current economic and political environment we all need to better understand how the government works and how to make it more efficient. Reading this book will help voters better evaluate the major issues facing our government. For the benefit of our children and grandchildren I encourage all voters to read this book. Having informed voters is the main way we can keep our democracy strong.

Saving Bernice: Battered Women, Welfare, and Poverty (Northeastern Series on Gender, Crime, and Law), by Jody Raphael

From Library Journal In this harrowing account of one woman's experiences with poverty and domestic abuse, Raphael, who previously guest-edited Understanding Women's Poverty, follows the life of Bernice, a child of a dysfunctional family (her alcoholic father poured gasoline over her 13-year-old brother and threw a match at him, burning him to death). Raphael includes the grisly details of Bernice's life as a battered woman and welfare mother, her frustrations with working through various public agencies, and her eventual triumph over her circumstances. Unfortunately, the writing is uneven, and Raphael's use of quotes from Virginia Woolf's writings at the beginning of every chapter seems a stretch. And though she provides evidence supporting her contention that examining domestic abuse necessarily involves examining the welfare system as a whole, this is not a new idea. Linda G. Mills's The Heart of Intimate Abuse: New Interventions in Child Welfare, Criminal Justice, and Health Settings (Springer, 1998) and Ruth A. Brandwein's Battered Women, Children, and Welfare Reform: The Ties That Bind (Sage, 1998) are more scholarly and better written (albeit less personal) sources on the subject. Recommended for specialized collections only.DEllen D. Gilbert, Rutgers Univ., New Brunswick, NJ Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Review “A must-read for everyone who wishes to end not just welfare, but poverty ‘as we know it.” (Patricia Ireland)“Saving Bernice illustrates very clearly how family violence keeps many women in poverty and dependent on welfare. Lessons learned from reading this book should guide the crafting of solutions to help women move from welfare to work without risking their safety.” (Ann Richards)

Peters Having counselled many women through the trauma of domestic violence, the story of Bernice is one that I have heard in reality many times over. Domestic violence is about the abuser's need for power and control. Until that control is taken away, the abuser will continue to abuse regardless of how many loving promises are made. With all the support programs in place in today, there is still a stigma attached to women and their children receiving social assistance. Finding a place to rent, finding employment, transpsortation, adequate daycare, and living in constant fear of the abuser are major challenges."Saving Bernice" is an inside look at the terror, hopelessness, emotional and physical pain encountered by an abused woman - and the will to survive. It is an indication that even with the social programs and justice system we have in place - there needs to be change. Women are still being abused, children are still being raised in poverty, and society has not adequately addressed the needs of these individuals. The book is informative, controversial and well worth reading.

Wilson As a criminology and criminal justice major, I purchased this book in order to write a book review for my Violence in America course. "Saving Bernice" is very well-written, and provides a compelling account of one woman's experiences as a victim of domestic violence. The author also suggests that domestic violence is a major contributing factor to exacerbating poverty and dependence on public welfare. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in criminology or social services!

Contains some horrific accounts. Worth reading to understand certain dynamics, and open up eyes to the world around us.

Trilby was a champion “blinder.” A champion in the art of identifying wines in blind tastings--and an even more avid gambler on the competitions. Yet Trilby’s luck has turned and his debts to Chinese Mafia kingpin Johnny Tan, who runs the games, have nearly destroyed his once impressive fortune. Along comes Bobby, a clumsy, poorly dressed hick from Nebraska with an astonishingly accurate talent for recognizing wines. Desperate for an opportunity to save himself from ruin, Trilby lures Bobby into the seamy yet sophisticated world of underground wine tasting competitions. With Trilby’s help, Bobby shocks everyone by winning, and winning again, until he wins an invite to the biggest wine tasting stage of all--La Paulee. But Trilby is far from the only high stakes hustler. As he and Bobby celebrate their success with wine and women, Johnny Tan schemes. Nothing is as it appears, as Bobby and Trilby face Trilby’s old nemesis, the greatest blinder of all time. Will Trilby ride Bobby to the most improbable championship of all? Or will he be outplayed on and off the competition table? Written with an insider’s perspective by sommelier Michael Amon, Blinders is a wild journey into the dark underside of wine obsession. "absolutely one of the most exciting books I have ever read" - OnlineBookClub.org "plenty of Pulp Fiction-style punch to this rollicking story of wine snob grifters" - Kirkus Reviews "from the very first pages, you're captivated" - Social Vignerons

Blinders, by Michael Amon

Review A broke, blue blood gamester grooms a wine-savvy rube for a high-stakes tasting competition in this crime novel. Nattily dressed Trilby is toying with a glass of Crozes-Hermitage in a New York City wine bar when a leggy beauty saunters in. After she orders a Gamay, a jeans-clad yokel named Bobby arrives and tries to flirt with her. She says that if he can tell her what she s drinking by tasting it, she ll provide her phone number. He surprisingly nails it, and she throws a glassful of wine in his face and storms off. Trilby springs into action and sets up a taste test (called a blind ) for Bobby, who manages to identify a series of wines. The newcomer reveals that he recently arrived from Omaha, where his dad was in the wine business. Trilby then takes Bobby to a blind betting event, which he wins. This spurs Trilby to prepare his protégé for La Paulée, the top blind competition, run by shady Hong Kong-based Johnny Tan and coming soon to San Francisco. He trains Bobby using the wine cellar in his inherited, but now heavily mortgaged, brownstone. Bobby wins several run-up events, including one at Sotheby s. There, Johnny is dazzled by Katya, a Russian billionaire s daughter, who places a $200,000 bet on Bobby for the upcoming La Paulée. Worried about covering that gamble, Johnny brings in a one-eyed man, Sommurai, who bested Trilby at a previous competition, and blackmails La Paulée s presiding judge to rig the event. Trilby waits to place his all-in bet until the eleventh hour, leading to a conclusion that prompts him to cry and laugh simultaneously. Debut novelist Amon brings plenty of Pulp Fiction style punch to this rollicking story of wine-snob grifters. He relates the drugs-and-sex sleaze of Tan and his crew with gusto, as well as the mechanics of setting odds and other details of blinding events. The narrative moves frothily along with plenty of dramatic suspense, giving readers a growing sense of a looming double cross. Some readers may find the revelation of a major scam to be a bit far-fetched, and one character s pedophilia pushes the envelope of acceptable edginess. Overall, however, Amon has crafted a fast-paced, entertaining caper. An Ocean s 11 type tale of an intriguing oenophile underworld. --Kirkus Reviewslinders by Michael Amon is a captivating wine novel. From the very first pages, you re captivated. Well I was... The first chapter, with its short 6 pages, is enough to throw you into an intriguing universe of nightlife, wine, and wonders: a wine bar in New York City, a luxury escort girl, and an unforeseen wine amateur nicknamed Bobby that is able to identify any wines down to the vintage and producer in any blind tasting. The stage is set... and keeps you wondering what s to come. 2012 Rombauer Chardonnay, California, 2013 Dr Loosen Mosel Riesling, or Austrian Gruner Vetliner. The taste of any wine seems to have no secret to Bobby. While most of us have for sole super power the ability to make wine disappear, Bobby can not only gulp a glass of wine in half a second, but he can also identify it with the highest accuracy, without seeing the label! When Bobby meets Trilby, a retired blind tasting prodigy, he is led to enter the underground world of Blinders . These Fight Club-like wine tasting competitions gather the worldwide attention of rich wine amateurs that can bid online on their favorite blinder. The awkward Bobby from Nebraska will surprise bidders and Chinese-Mafia tasting-event organizers, earning an invitation to the highest stage of all blind tastings: La Paulée. Will the man from Omaha make it to defeating the best wine experts the world of wine has ever seen? Filled with accurate references to the world of wine, Michael Amon s fiction takes twists and turns to surprise the reader and carry us along a decadent universe of sex, drugs, suspense, and Grand Crus. --Social Vignerons

I picked up this book for Kindle, expecting some mild entertainment, and maybe derive some wine knowledge from it.What I enjoyed:-The story sucked me in and I ended up devoting the majority of my day to it to finish it in one sitting.-The author provides access to a unique world of high stakes gambling in a field you wouldn't expect. This subculture alone was interesting enough to be sucked in. It's an irresistible cocktail - part Rain Main, part Casino Royale, part Sideways.-The author is very descriptive of the details: scenery; clothing; and of course, wines.-The story leads up to an exciting, unexpected climax. The second part of the story is not predictable and keeps the read engaging.Room for improvement:-Throughout, I felt some of the main characters were not explored to the appropriate depth. They were slightly simplistic and predictable. I would have enjoyed a deeper exploration into the psyches of Bobby and Johnny, for example.

I'm not much of a wine drinker nor gambler, but after reading "Blinders," I think it would be intriguing to become both.Michael Amon's novel is an exciting adventure and tale of high-stakes gambling and wine drinking. I never knew that wine drinkerscould bet on their ability to recognize vintages, not just by the taste, but by the vineyard, year, acidity etc., etc."Blinders" is a quick read, easy to pick up and get caught up in the adventures of a wine expert who takes a neophyte underhis belt. They they start entering various competitions where the stakes are high, emotions turn raw and the characters arerichly drawn. It's really fun and I recommend it highly.

Blew me away on so many levels By TFLReader I read A LOT and I have to say that I am pretty blown away by author Michael Amon's debut novel "Blinders" on several fronts. Not only have I never heard of hustle fiction (seriously, this is a thing?) before, but I also had no idea that that wine tasting was up there with high stakes gaming. If that's true, it's very cool and, if it's not, kudos to Amon for thinking it up! Now, when we get down to the actual book itself - again, awesome and blown away."Blinders" is the story of Bobby, a talented but woefully unprepared sommelier who gets thrust into a super crazy world of gangsters, greedy New York money men, and scary Russians over a multi-million dollar underground wine tasting event. Bobby makes the mistake of trusting his mentor, Trilby, who is a first class dirt bag and schemer. This puts Bobby on the hot seat at the La Paulee competition that is run by Johnny Tan, also not a nice guy. As with most con jobs, though (think Ocean's Eleven) nothing is as it seems and there are some great twists in this one.Loved this story and the original subject matter that made things really interesting. Not only did I get a great thriller but I also learned a ton about wine and the author is clearly an authority on the subject. Definitely recommend this one for anyone looking for something different and for a highly entertaining read.
