An important reflection on moral choices By Thomas Ehrlich Damon and Colby have written an important reflection on moral choices, one that should be essential reading for a wide range of audiences. In fact, anyone who cares about how moral decisions will find this book invaluable. In straightforward, clear prose the authors spell out deceptively simple, but profoundly powerful insights. This is a deeply reflective book of ideas that are right on target because the authors' judgments are so sound. As they write at the end of the volume, ideas and judgments do matter, and they have shown that persuasively.I did not know much about what might be called the “trolley-car track” school of moral choice--for example, you are driving the trolley car and if you do nothing the trolley will kill one person, but if you act and swerve to another track you will kill six persons. What to do? That "laboratory" approach to moral reasoning seems to have wide popularity among a number of psychologists and writers on ethics. Damon and Colby. make a convincing case that the approach has little traction in the real world of human behavior.Much more important, the authors use the six exemplars to explore three deceptively simple concepts in a way that will resonate with readers long after they finish the book. It points the way to how education and structured reflection can lead to ideals that can be deepened and renewed over a lifetime.More than two decades ago, these authors wrote a seminal work, "Some Do Care." A clear and convincing overview of moral choice By Kendall Cotton Bronk In their engaging and candid style, Damon and Colby, two world-renowned scholars of moral development, argue that a strong sense of purpose and a commitment to personally meaningful ideals can guide deliberate moral behavior. The authors present a comprehensive picture of moral action that accounts for cultural, biological, and individual variables. In so doing, they push against contemporary perspectives that view morality as an unreflective and even automatic reflex. In the course of arguing for the deliberateness of moral choice, they propose that a true understanding of morality requires not only a recognition of deficient and typical moral behavior, but also an understanding of what exemplary moral action entails. In this way, The Power of Ideals serves as a thoughtful and inspiring follow-up to their earlier Some Do Care.

By Ben Lenail I loved “The Power of Ideals” by Stanford’s William Damon and Anne Colby. I know Bill Damon from his work on kids finding purpose and highly respect him.Their book makes an eloquent critique of the new school of neuroscience, particularly around decision-making, as being too reductionist and promoting a bleak view of human nature. They are particularly critical of NYU’s Jonathan Haidt, while praising Daniel Kahneman’s work on Slow Thinking.They highlight the power of “moral agency” and use six case studies to make their point: Nelson Mandela, Eleanor Roosevelt, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Abraham Joshua Heschel, Jane Addams and Dag Hammarskjold – folks who faced personal limitations and obstacles and triumphed over them to lead lives of exemplary moral leadership.
