The rise of militant atheism has brought to fore some fundamental issues in our conventional understanding of religion. However, because it offers science as an alternative to religion, militant atheism also exposes to scrutiny the fundamental problems of incompleteness in current science. The book traces the problem of incompleteness in current science to the problem of universals that began in Greek philosophy and despite many attempts to reduce ideas to matter, the problem remains unsolved. The book shows how the problem of meaning appears over and over in all of modern science, rendering all current fields—physics, mathematics, computing, and biology included—incomplete. The book also presents a solution to this problem describing why nature is not just material objects that we can perceive, but also a hierarchy of abstract ideas that can only be conceived. These hierarchically ‘deeper’ ideas necessitate deeper forms of perception, even to complete material knowledge. The book uses this background to critique the foundations of atheism and shows why many of its current ideas—reductionism, materialism, determinism, evolutionism, and relativism—are simply false. It presents a radical understanding of religion, borrowing from Vedic philosophy, in which God is the most primordial idea from which all other ideas are produced through refinement. The key ideological shift necessary for this view of religion is the notion that material objects, too, are ideas. However, that shift does not depend on religion, since its implications can be known scientifically. The conflict between religion and science, in this view, is based on a flawed understanding of how reason and experiment are used to acquire knowledge. The book describes how reason and experiment can be used in two ways—discovery and verification—and while the nature of truth can never be discovered by reason and experiment, it can be verified in this way. This results in an epistemology in which truth is discovered via faith, but it is verified by reason and experiment.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fresh view on an old debate By Claudia Guidea In science-religion debates the discussion quickly turns to reason versus faith. In this book the author presents a point of view in which both reason and faith are used in both religion and in science. Reason in science is used to discover the truth, while in religion it's used to check the truth (author compares this process with figuring out the password to a computer versus checking an already existing password to see if it works). Also, faith are used in both religion and science in the same way - at the beginning of learning anything (a spiritual practice or a scientific practice) one has to accept some assumption on faith. If you don't try to then verify the knowledge yourself then you are being dogmatic, no matter if you are a scientist or a spiritualist. And this is where the book raises the most controversy - the assumptions of New Atheists are taken to their logical consequence and shown that they are inconsistent. Although I am myself agnostic on the matter of spirituality, I thought the arguments were well presented and, indeed, there is no reason why the New Atheists should be so confident that science is the answer to everything - because at this point science has some big problems of its own that have been swept under the rug. Vedic or Indian philosophy may have some answers here.

A pleasure to read, despite the "menancing" theme. The author has a nice process of presenting an position (for instance materialism) and then taking it to its logical conclusions. Then the author presents a counter-argument, after which he comes back and questions the counter-argument etc etc. I felt it was a good way to understand the concepts in the book as some of them were quite abstract. Good examples though!I was taken by surprise by the story of the Charvaka atheist from ancient India which had similar (if not stronger) materialist position than the New Atheists -- for instance. Also, the book also offers a chapter on dharma and religion which I felt was a great intro to the Hindu way of thinking and how it can inspire scientific inquiry.In the end, a great read.

Bold By Amazon Customer Atheism and religion analyzed from an original perspective -- Indian philosophy has a lot to say on the science-religion debates. I especially enjoyed the last two chapters ( Problems in Atheism and Religion and Dharma). Good job!
