Seven Peppercorns covers the vast scope of traditional Thai medicine practices including: Thai element theory, physical therapies, medical Buddhism, herbal medicine for massage, divinatory practices, and spirit medicine; all held within the context of a Thai bodyworker’s instructional manual. This is not another step by step Thai massage photographic sequence book, but rather an in-depth training in the theory behind the steps, with instruction in a wide range of esoteric Thai physical therapies designed to bring practical understanding of Thai bodywork as it is practiced by traditional doctors in Thailand.Seven Peppercorns is divided into twelve main segments; each segment containing several chapters. The organizational flow takes the reader from introduction, overview and history, through an understanding of Thai anatomy, including element, point, and sen line theory, to instruction in Thai diagnosis, actual physical manipulations and practical application of the shamanistic and Buddhist components of traditional Thai medicine as it applies to bodywork; all in an easy to follow well organized format. Included in this guide are Thai self care practices and exercises as well as treatment guidelines for specific disorders.Seven Peppercorns serves as both an instruction manual and a reference book fully annotated with appendixes, notes, glossary, bibliography and index. The straight forward academic informational writing is gentled with moments of conversational author to reader comments (often humorous), and peppered with short personal narrative stories that bring the reader into the aensory tapestry of Thailand. It is intended as a stand alone manual, or as a text book for Thai massage instructors to use in classes.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. I love the book By Ulric S Legouest I love the book! I want to read it front to back, over and over and over again until I have every little detail memorized! Every one of those little details are so well put together: The anecdotes, the theory, the prose, the charts and drawings!!!Don't let the subject fool you, there is something of benefit for any bodyworker of any modality in this book beyond the scope and realm of Thai massage. You want herbal formulas (compresses, balms, liniments) to supplement your Swedish massage or Deep Tissue, it's in here (Chapter 4). You want to give your clients some nutritional advice from a wholistic medicine perspective, the clues are here. You're a chiropractor and want some perspectives on how to integrate massage with joint manipulation, the layers of the body and anatomy section might give some fresh perspective on the subject (Chapters 2 and 5). Those who are into Tibetan and Ayurvedic medicine (whether the bodywork or the internal medicine) can also benefit. Albeit all three being distinct medical traditions, they also share a lot of the theory, materia medica, and so forth (the history chapter, Chapter 1, can help put all of this in its proper context). Learn something from one of the lesser known traditions and you might find some herbal formulas, massage treatment protocols, or perspectives to enrich your Tibetan or Ayurvedic practice. Lastly, if you are a Thai bodyworker, then this book is indispensable as the knowledge contained herein is unmatched anywhere else in the English language. On a stylistic note, one of my favorite aspects of this book: it has personality and spunk--specifically Nephyr's personality and spunk! And that's awesome, 'cause it does that without sacrificing depth and thoroughness! On the contrary, it adds an important human dimension to the medicine, and is pedagogically really really helpful! It's a pleasure to read and re-reading it is no less pleasurable! It teaches us the medicine, through a human touch, through poetry, and through technical depth with illustrations and charts to boot! Why can't all textbooks fulfill this criteria?

I was trying to connect to Thai massage through Ayurveda and TCM but it felt all wrong. Do to my inability to travel to Thailand, I scoured the internet for information on an authentic Thai system. I was so so so excited when I stumbled across the Naga Center, which led me to this book. I LOVE THIS BOOK. I also love the author. I have never met Nephyr, but she is a magical being with an amazing, gentle spirit and she is a damn fine teacher (I am a teacher myself and my standards are pretty darn high). This book is a must read for all Thai bodyworkers that are serious about Thai bodywork.

I was thrilled to see that very little information had been duplicated. Some of the Thai element theory was repeated, but the formulas, history, and detailed descriptions of bodywork practices are all original.I have made several of the herbal remedies here, to the delight of my clients. I have consulted the book for specific ailments of clients (nerve damage, fibromyalgia, etc.) and offered some of my best bodywork using the philosophy and techniques outlined in this book.I must buy a second copy of both books so that I can keep one at my studio and one at home. I refer to them that often.
