About the Author Farshid Delshad (born 1972) has a Master of Arts in Iranian and Semitic philology from Iran. He earned his first PhD in Caucasian and Slavic Studies from Tbilisi State University in Georgia. Later, he received a second Masters in "German as a Foreign and Second Language Acquisition" with a minor in "Indo-European Linguistics." He also received a PhD in Historical Comparative Linguistics from the German University of Friedrich-Schiller. Farshid has been teaching languages and cultures of the Middle East since 1994 in Iran, Georgia, Russia, Germany, France, and Switzerland. His focus includes Contrastive and Historical Linguistics and Minority Research in Islamic countries. He is currently working in Germany and in the United States as an associate scholar for Languages and Cultures of the Muslim World. Farshid is the author of several published chrestomathies and readers in Persian as a Foreign Language.

By Ghompoot As a Persian language learner, I needed to find a textbook that I could rely on in order to learn more about modern the Persian language and Iranian heritage. Dr. Delshad's book helped me improve my writing and communication skills. I was especially impressed by the glossary, which is very detailed and contains translations of Persian words in both German and English. Having used this textbook, I feel pretty confident that my Persian skill set is now twice as strong as before.

The author traces the history of the pharmaceutical industry, from its roots to where they are today. The information presented in this book can easily be confirmed by any and all who may be taken aback. Whenever one hears "conspiracy theory", we have come to think that it means "quackery" or something "nut cases put forth". However, the real definition of "conspiracy" is "a secret plan to do something that is harmful".I highly recommend this book to everyone!

By Angela Haaken Max Fitzer has managed to write some of the most compelling information that I have ever come across on the FDA and their shady ways.His research is definitely one of the most eye opening I have seen in the case of our pharmaceutical and agricultural industries and their iron grasp on the of our economies greatest assets and their apparent inability to speak the truth.So smartly written, it paints a most horrifying and justifiable picture of corruption and conspiracy. Throughout the book types 1 and 2 diabetes were confused. Also there were numerous grammatical errors. That said, the history of the monolithic drug companies made it an interesting and worthwhile read.

The volume falls into three parts, beginning with meta-level perspectives and moving to concrete applications.

Part 1 analyzes human dignity through a worldview lens, exploring the source and meaning of human dignity from naturalist, postmodernist, Protestant, and Catholic vantages, respectively, letting each side explain and defend its own conception. Part 2 moves from metaphysical moorings to key areas of macro-level influence: international politics, American law, and biological science. These chapters examine the legitimacy of the concept of dignity in documents by international political bodies, the role of dignity in American jurisprudence, and the implications―and challenges―for dignity posed by Darwinism. Part 3 shifts from macro-level topics to concrete applications by examining the rhetoric of human dignity in specific controversies: embryonic stem cell research, abortion, human-animal chimeras, euthanasia and palliative care, psychotropic drugs, and assisted reproductive technologies. Each chapter analyzes the rhetorical use of ‘human dignity’ by opposing camps, assessing the utility of the concept and whether a different concept or approach can be a more productive means of framing or guiding the debate.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. One view By Hande Z This book is a massive presentation of important issues concerning bioethics from the bias of the Christian view. The title does not suggest it because it has the subtitle, "From Worldviews to the Public Square". What did Arthur Caplan mean when he wrote in the foreword: "Even the Christian notion of dignity invoking both humanity's likeness to God and praising human creations such as art, medicine, science, and philosophy can be secularized a bit so that it is simply the products of a socially cooperative, reflective creature that are infused with dignity due to their purposefulness and utility. Dignity may be something that is conferred rather than a property that inheres in things themselves"? I doubt that he meant that Christian positions can soften and adapt to secular views. Reading the book in its entirety, it is clear that he meant that Christian views can (and should) be adopted by the secular public.It is hard to tell whether the chapter "Dignity for Skeptics" is the representation of a secular view because that is one of the densest chapters in the book. Nathan Palpant, one of the two editors is a biochemist whose articles in the book express views that eschew the secular position on dignity. His own work in stem cells thus places him in an awkward situation and that seems obvious in his article with Suzanne Holland (chapter 12).I gave this book four stars for its effort as a book from its specific viewpoint; for the small group that prefers a more balanced view this book would merit no more than two stars. Those who are looking for books to balance the "worldviews" expressed in Dilley & Palpant will enjoy Baruch Brody's "Taking Issue", 2003, Georgetown University Press.
