Well reasoned analysis of progressive big-government policies By Amazon Customer If you are looking for an attack on how awful Hillary Clinton is, this book is not for you. If instead you are looking for a well reasoned analysis of progressive big government policies, as typified by the policies called for in Mrs. Clinton's book, this is a great place to start.Dr Stumborg applies his analytical skills to examine the foundations of progressive policy as typified in Mrs. Clinton's “It Takes a Village”. With his academic training as a physicist (PhD) coupled with his years working as an analyst, he artfully breaks down and explains policy ideas such as Family Medical Leave Act. A real benefit to having someone who is not a political or social scientist doing this analysis is clear explanations without resorting to academic jargon of those fields. End result is a rigorous policy analysis presented in clear and understandable English.Fans of talk radio will not find any 'red meat' with attacks on the character of Mrs Clinton, her husband or any other politician. I find this refreshing. As someone who works “inside the beltway”, I have friends and neighbors who are liberal to progressive. They are not bad or stupid people, just as I am not evil or immoral. We just disagree on policies on how to make the world a better place for our children. Both sides in policy debates will benefit from this example of a factual analysis without name calling of denigrating those who disagree.While “Hillary Clinton's Village” uses Mrs Clinton's “It Takes a Village” as a jumping off point, this is not a long book review itself nor does it limit itself to Mrs Clinton's policies. It is instead an explanation of how big government is not always the only solution, and seldom even a good solution. But it is not a call for radical libertarianism. As someone who served on active duty in the military and has worked as a civil servant (in the best sense of that title), Dr Stumborg displays a keen appreciation for where and when federal government is best solution. As he demonstrates over and over, depending on big government to provide one size fits all solutions leads to many unintended consequences that are often worse than the original 'problem'.

By Amazon Customer I am a physicist, and so I appreciated the simplicity of his hypothesis. Using non-partisan language, Dr. Stumborg clearly articulated the problems with big government. His discussion on Hayek (p. 26) could easily be framed as a Nash equilibrium demonstrating that the typical voter will always vote self-interest over principles, and so as long as politicians promise that which panders to self-interest, this will be a one-way train headed for a wreck. His analysis on McCrystal's view on compulsory one-year government service made me rethink my own position. On Pope Francis, this analysis was honest and refreshing; I could see a little more analysis on the balance in Biblical terms (e.g., social concerns of the prophets versus work ethic from the Wisdom books), but I know that might be an entirely new work. What was missing was how the local church works best for local problems, even on a global scale. I heartily recommend this book for partisans on either side of the aisle who are genuine about disentangling good intentions with positive results, because as Dr. Stumborg charges, they are not the same!

By Ric from New York Hillary Clinton’s Village is a comprehensive evaluation of why most federal government programs fail. Dr. Stumborg provides insight into the philosophical conflicts our founding fathers had between federal and state rights and why programs fail to scale.He discusses numerous examples of failed U.S. programs across virtually all agencies of the federal government. These programs show a consistent pattern of failing to scale at the federal level, a lack of metrics to measure performance and lack of competent leadership to take appropriate action.Given our current economic and political environment we all need to better understand how the government works and how to make it more efficient. Reading this book will help voters better evaluate the major issues facing our government.For the benefit of our children and grandchildren I encourage all voters to read this book. Having informed voters is the main way we can keep our democracy strong.

From Library Journal In this harrowing account of one woman's experiences with poverty and domestic abuse, Raphael, who previously guest-edited Understanding Women's Poverty, follows the life of Bernice, a child of a dysfunctional family (her alcoholic father poured gasoline over her 13-year-old brother and threw a match at him, burning him to death). Raphael includes the grisly details of Bernice's life as a battered woman and welfare mother, her frustrations with working through various public agencies, and her eventual triumph over her circumstances. Unfortunately, the writing is uneven, and Raphael's use of quotes from Virginia Woolf's writings at the beginning of every chapter seems a stretch. And though she provides evidence supporting her contention that examining domestic abuse necessarily involves examining the welfare system as a whole, this is not a new idea. Linda G. Mills's The Heart of Intimate Abuse: New Interventions in Child Welfare, Criminal Justice, and Health Settings (Springer, 1998) and Ruth A. Brandwein's Battered Women, Children, and Welfare Reform: The Ties That Bind (Sage, 1998) are more scholarly and better written (albeit less personal) sources on the subject. Peters Having counselled many women through the trauma of domestic violence, the story of Bernice is one that I have heard in reality many times over. Domestic violence is about the abuser's need for power and control. Until that control is taken away, the abuser will continue to abuse regardless of how many loving promises are made. With all the support programs in place in today, there is still a stigma attached to women and their children receiving social assistance. Finding a place to rent, finding employment, transpsortation, adequate daycare, and living in constant fear of the abuser are major challenges."Saving Bernice" is an inside look at the terror, hopelessness, emotional and physical pain encountered by an abused woman - and the will to survive. It is an indication that even with the social programs and justice system we have in place - there needs to be change. Women are still being abused, children are still being raised in poverty, and society has not adequately addressed the needs of these individuals. The book is informative, controversial and well worth reading.

Wilson As a criminology and criminal justice major, I purchased this book in order to write a book review for my Violence in America course. "Saving Bernice" is very well-written, and provides a compelling account of one woman's experiences as a victim of domestic violence. The author also suggests that domestic violence is a major contributing factor to exacerbating poverty and dependence on public welfare. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in criminology or social services!

Contains some horrific accounts. Worth reading to understand certain dynamics, and open up eyes to the world around us.

This spurs Trilby to prepare his protégé for La Paulée, the top blind competition, run by shady Hong Kong-based Johnny Tan and coming soon to San Francisco. He trains Bobby using the wine cellar in his inherited, but now heavily mortgaged, brownstone. Bobby wins several run-up events, including one at Sotheby s. I picked up this book for Kindle, expecting some mild entertainment, and maybe derive some wine knowledge from it.What I enjoyed:-The story sucked me in and I ended up devoting the majority of my day to it to finish it in one sitting.-The author provides access to a unique world of high stakes gambling in a field you wouldn't expect. This subculture alone was interesting enough to be sucked in. It's an irresistible cocktail - part Rain Main, part Casino Royale, part Sideways.-The author is very descriptive of the details: scenery; clothing; and of course, wines.-The story leads up to an exciting, unexpected climax. The second part of the story is not predictable and keeps the read engaging.Room for improvement:-Throughout, I felt some of the main characters were not explored to the appropriate depth. They were slightly simplistic and predictable. I would have enjoyed a deeper exploration into the psyches of Bobby and Johnny, for example.

I'm not much of a wine drinker nor gambler, but after reading "Blinders," I think it would be intriguing to become both.Michael Amon's novel is an exciting adventure and tale of high-stakes gambling and wine drinking. I never knew that wine drinkerscould bet on their ability to recognize vintages, not just by the taste, but by the vineyard, year, acidity etc., etc."Blinders" is a quick read, easy to pick up and get caught up in the adventures of a wine expert who takes a neophyte underhis belt. They they start entering various competitions where the stakes are high, emotions turn raw and the characters arerichly drawn. It's really fun and I recommend it highly.

Blew me away on so many levels By TFLReader I read A LOT and I have to say that I am pretty blown away by author Michael Amon's debut novel "Blinders" on several fronts. Not only have I never heard of hustle fiction (seriously, this is a thing?) before, but I also had no idea that that wine tasting was up there with high stakes gaming. If that's true, it's very cool and, if it's not, kudos to Amon for thinking it up! Now, when we get down to the actual book itself - again, awesome and blown away."Blinders" is the story of Bobby, a talented but woefully unprepared sommelier who gets thrust into a super crazy world of gangsters, greedy New York money men, and scary Russians over a multi-million dollar underground wine tasting event. Bobby makes the mistake of trusting his mentor, Trilby, who is a first class dirt bag and schemer. This puts Bobby on the hot seat at the La Paulee competition that is run by Johnny Tan, also not a nice guy. As with most con jobs, though (think Ocean's Eleven) nothing is as it seems and there are some great twists in this one.Loved this story and the original subject matter that made things really interesting. Not only did I get a great thriller but I also learned a ton about wine and the author is clearly an authority on the subject. Definitely recommend this one for anyone looking for something different and for a highly entertaining read.

By Jazzy Oz Viewing from Downunder, this book describes the long road undertaken by America's gay community towards marriage equality and human justice for all despite gender orientation. Tragically, we in Australia currently has a federal government hell bent to impose its bigotry on a good section of our citizentry.

Not the best book I've read, however, not the worst either. It is very academic and not much of a story more so an anthology of articles. But sincem I got it for free, I have nothing to complain about.

Turns out there are lots of ways, everything from the Bates Method, which was something an ophthalmologist from 1890 came up with to help work the muscles of the eye, to Yoga exercises. There is one technique that I like called a Color Day and you spend one day in finding one particular color of your choice, and you simply notice that color the whole day.

For someone that acquired glasses in his twenties, I found the exercises very thought provoking. The book also has a historical facet that I was not expecting. I may very well adjust some of my food intake after reading this book. This is a book I will pass on to other friends. 5 stars!!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Not true Natural Eyesight. Partial, incorrect advice. Impairs the vision By Mary I. Oliver Author claims to have read Dr. Bates book. I think he did not read it entirely.The content of this book (Eyesight Improvement - The ultimate Guide...) is not the Bates Method. It has little pieces of it, but much is taught wrong. Examples;Author tells the reader to not move the head with the eyes. This is bad advice; it will cause eye muscle tension, neck, head muscle tension and impair central vision, normal eye shifting movement. This causes blurry eyesight.I do not see shifting and central-fixation (two of Dr. Bates main treatments) anywhere in this book.Staring is induced by some of the books advice. Staring is a main bad habit that lowers the eyesight. It prevents relaxation. It is the opposite of shifting.Shifting is; to move your attention from object to object and part to part on objects. That's the main way to see clear. Blink and shift. This simple basis of Dr. Bates Method-Dr. Bates treatment is not in this book.The sway and long swing are taught partly incorrect and are confused with each other. The author's other book, under his different name has the same incorrect, confusing directions.Author limits looking to the far exercise to 20 feet. Same in his other book.The eyes need full un-accommodation, full divergence by looking beyond 20 feet, far into infinity.The sunlight method must mention to move the eyes! This is vital to prevent overexposure to sunlight. Lowers the vision, impairs natural relaxed eye shifting, central vision.Corn is advised; that IS good, but must be non GMO.Shellfish is advised; this is a animal from the bottom of the sea. Where all the pollution goes. it is better to get the nutrients from a healthier source.Sorry to have to give these 1 star reviews but I have been bombarded with requests for reviews for these books in my email for months since 2014. So I downloaded the Kindles.I know what is the true Bates Method, Eyesight Improvement, and what is not. So please; do not ask for any more reviews.I think this is the same 1-2 authors churning out books on health information; they are not nutritionists, not Eyesight teachers, not doctors. Teaching wrong hurts people. The Bates method does not consist of the type of content that is in these books. The true, healthy Bates method is online free and in authentic books on Amazon.I suggest you TRULY study the Bates Method, COMPLETELY. Then you will understand what is right and what is wrong. There are a lot of corrupt teachers out there. Avoid them. Learn from Dr. Bates and the books I placed below. They will lead you in the right direction.Or; if you are just out to make money selling books; (as I suspect); try to write adventure, mystery, history, fiction, biography... books. Brant Having been addicted to sugar for many years, this book really hit the spot.Martha holds no punches in addressing this issue in a direct and no-nonsense way.She starts by giving a background on what sugar is and isn't. She then points out how so much of our food is filled with sugar.By breaking down why I am addicted to sugar, it became clear to me that this was a problem that needed to be fixed. She understands the role of motivation in getting this started.She doesn't leave you hanging either. She goes right into what food and drinks will work during the detox period of purging the sugar from your system.Finally, Martha lays out an action plan for post-detox that is straight forward and easy to follow.Not knowing so much about sugar addiction and detox in general, this book is a great resource filled with ideas to help you also overcome your addiction.

Yep, medical marvels. When I was cured of my affliction, I had to learn more about not contracting the demon again. Martha knows what she's talking about. Take it from a former sugar saturated afflictee. It's not just avoiding table sugar. Your food is saturated with sugar, but under different names. High fruictose corn syrup is one of the worst forms of sugar. This book tells you what, an how to avoid these harbingers of unhealthiness. Good job.

She doesn't mess about and tells you what is killing you - sugar is wrose than fat! Short and simple, straight to the point, this book MADE me do something about detoxing my body. No BS. No pictures of skinnies against fatties, no pictures of the everyday foods, available in any supermarket - to sort out your problem. EVerybody should read this, if only to know what sugar doeos to ruin your health.
